BERTHA W. CROOM

Bertha Weathers Croom, widow of Lewis Croom, died Oct. 6, 2004, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.

Born Oct. 13, 1923, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Louise Weathers.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her niece, Marie Wiley, 5480 Keith Road, Sumter.

Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter.

CECIL L. SPRINGS Sr.

Cecil Lee Springs Sr., 55, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Clen Springs and the late Bertha Broach Springs. Mr. Springs attended Sumter Freewill Baptist of the Pentecostal Faith Church and was employed by Express Teller Services.

Surviving are two sons, Cecil Lee Springs Jr. and David Henry Springs, both of Sumter; two brothers, Alton Springs of Sumter and Hoyt Springs of Lake City; two sisters, Ruby Nichols of Sumter and Shirley Feagin of Mt. Pleasant; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Springs.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Melton, the Rev. Clint Tawes and the Rev. B.R. Wallace officiating.

Burial will be in the Ward cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Ward, Steve Ward, Mike Ward, Ray Mooneyham, Jerry Geddings and Billy Nichols.

Honorary pallbearers will be Timmy Springs, Donnie Springs, Todd Weatherford, Craig Weatherford and Marty Geddings.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of Patti and Glenn McCloud, 3330 Butterworth Circle.

Memorials may be made to Sumter Freewill Baptist of the Pentecostal Faith Church, 971 Boulevard Road, Sumter, SC 29153.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., is in charge of the arrangements.

EDNA L. WILLIAMSON

Edna L. Williamson, 90, widow of Lewis Williamson, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Durant, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Thomas J. McBride and the late Ruth Mae Self McBride. She was first married to the late Curtis Eugene Ellard. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include two great-nephews, Ken Wixey of Sumter and Kevin Wixey of Columbia; and several great-great nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Jackie Jenkins officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

ROSA G. McFADDEN

Rosa "Kate" Gamble McFadden, 54, wife of Willie McFadden Sr., died Oct. 2, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 23, 1950, in the Cypress Fork section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Rosa Lee Gamble. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning Training School Class of 1966. In her youth, she attended Sunday school at Cypress Fork AME Church.

Survivors besides her husband, Willie McFadden Sr. of the home, include four sons, Willie McFadden Jr., Stacey McFadden and Timothy McFadden, all of Sumter, and Lyndell "Dion" McFadden of Virginia; one daughter, Charlene McFadden of Sumter; one sister, Estella Rush of Newark, N.J.; and two grandchildren, Aladdin Edden and Martin Edden, both of Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning. The Rev. Leroy Green, pastor of Cypress Fork AME Church, will officiating. Burial will be in Manning cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home, 209 Woodlawn Ave., Sumter.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

MARGARET FLOYD

ALCOLU -- Margaret Gertharee Yarborough Floyd, 75, widow of Walter Allen Floyd, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 4, 1929, in Pamplico, she was a daughter of the late Ingram and Constance Burrows Yarborough. She was a housewife and member of Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Gwyn Welch (Davis) of Alcolu and Irene Driggers (Kirk) of Effingham; two sons, Carl Floyd (Dianne) of Alcolu and Marion (Karen) of Society Hill; two brothers, Burnette Yarborough of New Zion and R.L. Yarborough of Nesmith; one sister, Linda Scott of Timmonsville; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Yarborough.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home of Manning with the Rev. Morris Smith officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lloyd Ackerman.

Burial will follow in the Little Star PHC cemetery.

Pallbearers will be the Rev. Bobby Floyd, Jonathan Welch, Billy Welch, Travis Floyd, Justin Floyd and Carl Wilson Floyd Jr.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, Gwyn Welch, 1536 Alderman Camp Road, Alcolu.

Memorials may be made to the Little Star PHC Building Fund, P.O. Box 391, Manning, SC 29102, or to a charity of one's choice.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

HERBERT F. KIRLIS

CAMDEN -- Services for Herbert Francis Kirlis, 81, will be held on Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at 11 a.m. in Hermitage Baptist Church. The Rev. Condy Richardson will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kershaw County, 2001 W. DeKalb St., Camden, SC 29020.

Mr. Kirlis, widower of Violet Rose Brown Kirlis, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004. Born in Peabody, Mass., he was the son of the late William and Rita O'Donnell Kirlis. Mr. Kirlis was a retired restaurateur, a member of Hermitage Baptist Church and a U.S. Army World War II veteran, having served in the European Theatre. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. Mr. Kirlis was wounded in Arden Forest in 1944.

Surviving are daughters Elizabeth McCuistion of Camden, Victoria Lynn Poarch of Portland, Ore., Deborah Jean Garverick of Fredricktown, Ohio, and JoAnn Atchley of Sarasota, Fla.; sons Herbert F. Kirlis Jr. of Allentown, N.H., Phillip C. Kirlis of Sumter, Michael R. Kirlis of Muskeegon, Mich., Donald J. Kirlis of Candia, N.H., and David J. Kirlis of Kansas City, Mo.; 27 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara White of Boston.

He was predeceased by a son, Ralph L. Kirlis.

Kornegay Funeral Home of Camden is in charge of arrangements.

LEVERN STUCKEY

Levern Stuckey, 51, of 65 Book Lane, Rembert, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Spring Hill United Methodist Church, Rembert. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Haile's Funeral Home of Camden is in charge of arrangements.

CECIL GREEN

Cecil "Big Daddy" Green, 82, husband of Josephine Green, died Oct. 7, 2004, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.

Born March 8, 1922, in Lena, Miss., he was a son of the late Sam and Ollie Mae Nimock Green. He attended the public schools of Leake County, Miss. At an early age, he relocated to Long Island, N.Y., where he met his loving, devoted wife. Together, they owned and operated C&A Dry Cleaners for more than 15 years. After retiring, he moved to Sumter, where he remained until his passing.

Survivors besides his wife include a stepdaughter, Azalee (Arthur) Lee of Mayesville; two sons, Senior Chief Cecil (Cherrise) Montgomery of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ronnie Montgomery of Sumter; one daughter, Beverly A. Montgomery of Dalzell; six grandchildren, Quanda, Anthony, Terika, Adrian, Kadeem and Andrew; nine sisters, Pauline Ward of Midway, Miss., Bernice Moore of Forest, Miss., Annie Maude Burks and Lovie Mae Bowie, both of Chicago, Mable (Meritt) McClendon, Alma Jean McClendon, Bonnie Young, Barbara Morse and Cremella (Jesse) Cooks, all of Milwaukee; one brother, C.J. (Theresa) Green of Chicago; a mother-in-law, Emma McFadden of Sumter; one sister-in-law, Viola (Alonza) Wilson of Hampton, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Sammie Montgomery of Sumter and Tommy L. (Hattie) Montgomery of Mayesville; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday in the chapel of Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., with Bishop Sammy C. Smith officiating.

Burial will be in Mayesville cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 3255 Lee Altman Drive, Dalzell, SC 29040.

FRANCES T. RICHBURG

Frances Tindal Richburg, a senior citizen and former educator of Clarendon County and a daughter of the late Marion Tindal and Mamie Cooper Tindal, was born in the Silver community of Clarendon County on April 19, 1910. She entered into eternal rest on Oct. 4, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Richburg joined Friendship AME Church during her youth and served faithfully in many capacities, including the Senior Choir and the Missionary Society. She was also mother of the church and a member of several other civic organizations. She obtained her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Morris College. She taught for 45 years at Silver, Paxville and Alcolu elementary schools.

Strongly devoted to her family, she gave herself untiringly with deepest love and unforgettable gentleness. The joy of her warm smile will be cherished by her many friends and family.

She was married to Richard Richburg Jr. of Clarendon County, who preceded her in death in 1973. This union was blessed with three children; two children, Helen and Calvin, preceded her in death.

Her memories will be cherished by two sons, Marion Richburg Sr. of Paxville and Willie (Donna) Cooper of Nanticoke, Pa.; two sisters, Roberta T. Abraham of Eldersburg, Md., and Lucille T. (Gerald T.) Washington of Sumter; three sisters-in-law, Lucretia Ragins of Sumter, Minnie B. (Dewey Sr.) Hamilton of Manning and Edythe G. Richburg of Summerton; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Two brothers preceded her in death, Alphonza (Jent) Tindal and Cleveland Tindal.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Friendship AME Church with the Rev. Dr. Henry Cohen officiating, assisted by the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan, Elder Carl B. Richburg Sr., the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, the Rev. Joseph Postell, the Rev. Melvin J. Capers and the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg.

Burial will follow in the Friendship AME Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

Floral bearers will be the Missionary Society of Friendship AME Church.

The family will receive friends at 11159 Bethel Highway, Paxville community, Manning.

The family has chosen Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning for the arrangements.

WILLIE ALFORD

LAKE CITY -- Willie "WD" Alford, 67, husband of Christine Brown Alford of the home, died Monday at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 6, 1936, in Cades, he was a son of the late John and Laura McCutcheon Alford. He was a graduate of Cades High School. He was owner and operator of WD's Grocery and WD's East Main Restaurant in Lake City.

Survivors include three sons, Willie Roddreagus Alford, Rodderick Leon Alford and Bryan Deon Alford, all of the home; one brother, Herman (Luvenia) Alford of Lake City; four sisters, Earline Harrison Shaw and Jeanette Gordon of Lake City, Jack Frances Fulmore of Ladysmith, Va., and Alice (Solomon) Tisdal of Willow Grove, Pa.

He was preceded in death by siblings Matthew, John, Mitchell, Howard and Senara.

The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Mt. Beulah United Methodist Church, Beulah Road, Lake City, with the Rev. Charles S. Branch officiating.

Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery at Kingstree.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 120 Valley St., Lake City, SC 29560.

Green's Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge of arrangements.
