JOHNNY MITCHELL III
Funeral services for Johnny Mitchell III, 17, will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 27, 2005, at Antioch Baptist Church. Burial will follow immediately in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Mitchell died Friday, July 22, from injuries received in an accident. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Johnny Mitchell Jr. and Melanie Kelley Mitchell. He received his education in the Darlington County public school system. He was a member of the Lamar High School football team that went to two state championships and was also affiliated with the WIA working program.

Surviving are his mother, Melanie Kelley Mitchell of Hartsville and his father, Johnny Mitchell Jr. of Lamar; one sister, Erica Rivers of Hartsville; one brother, Matthew Mitchell of Lamar; paternal grandmother, Carrie Louise Mitchell of Hartsville; a maternal grandfather, Marvin C. Kelley of Hartsville; 23 aunts and uncles; one niece, Leah Chantel Mason of Hartsville; a host of cousins and other close relatives and friends.

CHARLENE SANFORD
Charlene Sanford, 35, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of Leverne Smith, 1146 Farmhouse Lane, Darlington.

LEROY WHEELER
Funeral services for Leroy “Red” Wheeler Sr., 73, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Wheeler died Thursday, July 21, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Ora Lee Wheeler and James Charles. He received his education in the Darlington County public school system and was a member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Lucille Wheeler of Patterson, N.J.; three sons, Walter Wilds, Jerome (Pastor Janie Mae) Wilds and Leroy (Pamela) Wheeler Jr., all of Hartsville; two sisters, Janice Smith of New Haven, Conn., and Lizzie (Tut) Bishop of Patterson, N.J.; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

CHASE BYRD
SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Benton Chase Byrd, 22, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2005, at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, July 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Byrd died Monday, July 25. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Travis M. and Joyce Starling Byrd Sr. He was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Chase was a certified welder with various companies throughout the southeast. He was loved by all who knew him. Our beloved son, brother and father, entered into rest.

Surviving are his daughter, Elizabeth Logan Byrd of Patrick; mother and father, of Society Hill; brother and sister-in-law, T. J. and Jessica Byrd of Society Hill; special friend, Melissa Kitchen of Society Hill; mother of Elizabeth Logan Byrd, Jennifer Goforth of Patrick; paternal grandparents, Raymond Byrd and the late Charlotte Barfield Byrd of Society Hill; maternal grandparents, Annie Starling and the late Calhoun Starling of Society Hill.

REV. JACK COOK
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for the Rev. Jack Lanier Cook, 75, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2005, at Faith Free Will Baptist Church with interment following in Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

The Rev. Cook, of the Philadelphia community, died at his home on Tuesday, July 26. He was born in Metter, Ga., son of the late Preston Nicholas and Carrie Lanier Cook. He was the stepson of Mary Cook Little. He served his country in the United States Army and was a retired minister. The Rev. Cook pastored Southern Methodist churches in South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina for 25 years and Baptist churches for three years. He was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Lois H. Cook; son, Chris L. (Kay) Cook of West Columbia; daughter, Harriet C. (Raymond) McConnell of Hartsville; grandchildren, Ryan and Erin McConnell, Andrew, Amy and Anna Beth Cook; two sisters, Juanita Holland and Marguerite Murray; half-brother, Nicholas Cook; and two half-sisters, Ellen Rahn and Jan Nyborg.

The Rev. Cook was preceded in death by a son, Dennis F. Cook; brother, Alton Cook; and sisters, Edna Earl Little and Dorothy Woods.

CHARLENE SANFORD
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Charlene Sanford, 35, will be held at 4 p.m. today, July 29, 2005, at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in Rose Garden in South Boston, Va., conducted by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sanford died Tuesday, July 26, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Virginia, a daughter of Alice Venable. She received her education in the public schools in the area. After migrating to Darlington, she became a member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving other than her mother of South Boston, Va., are her husband, Donnell Sanford of Darlington; four children, Terrell Venable, Brittany Venable, Sherrel Venable and Brianna Venable, all of Darlington; one sister, Tracey Chambers of Virginia; four brothers, Levi Venable, Charlie Byrd III, Kevin Davis, all of Virginia, and Eric Guy of Hartford, Conn.; a father-in-law, Hillard Sanford of New York; 16 aunts and uncles; a special cousin, Lisa Venable of Virginia; and two special friends, Sharon McFarland and Anita Jackson, both of Darlington; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

WOODROW TISDALE
BISHOPVILLE — Funeral services for Woodrow Wilson Tisdale, 92, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gordon Timmons officiating. Private burial will be in the Bethlehem cemetery, directed by Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville. The family will receive friends at the home, 529 N. Main St., Bishopville.

JENNIFER MITCHELL
Services for Jennifer Driggers Mitchell, 29, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. The Rev. Jay Thompson will officiate. Burial will be in the Damascus cemetery. Visitation will be this evening, Aug. 3, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mitchell died Monday, Aug. 1. She was born in Bennettsville.

Surviving are her husband, Derrick Mitchell of Hartsville; sons, Ethan Boyette, Kodie Pressley of Rockingham, Andrew Driggers of Hartsville; mother and stepfather, Clara and William Evans of Hartsville; father and stepmother, Mitchell and Pam Driggers of Blenheim; sister, Rita Tyner of Hartsville; brother, Mitchell Driggers of Florence; three stepsisters, Amanda Evans of Hartsville, Rachel Evans of Scranton, Miranda McKenzie of Blenheim; two stepbrothers, Michael Coley of Bennet-tsville, Lance Evans of Harts-ville; maternal grandmother, Collen Poole of Hartsville; paternal step grandparents, Billy and Betty Baker, Hartsville.

CHRISTOPHER R. FEMAL
Funeral services for Christopher Robert Femal, 23, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mark Huckaby will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Femal died Saturday, July 30. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Bob Femal and Judy and Jerry Ammons.

Surviving are his father of Hartsville; mother and stepfather of Oates; sister and brother-in-law, Michell and Patrick Keese of Brussels, Belgium; maternal grandfather, Fred Melton of Hartsville.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Francis and Ellie Femal; maternal grandmother, Lois Hulsey; maternal great-grandparents, Marion and Lena Mae Melton.

WILLIE JAMES BELL
Funeral services for Willie James (Bill) Bell, 77, formerly of Honea Path, were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2005, at Pruitt Funeral Home with the Rev. Charlie Driggers officiating. Burial was in the Shady Grove Baptist Church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 521 N. McDuffie St., Anderson, SC 29621.

Mr. Bell died Thursday, July 21, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Willie and Lillie Mae Motes Bell. He was the retired owner of Bill’s Best Buys and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are four brothers, Gene Bell, John Bell and Charles Bell, all of Honea Path, and Sammie Bell of Bishop-ville; two sisters, Nora Davis of Honea Path, and Ethel Malone of Niceville, Fla; numerous nieces and nephews; special friend, Margaret Knowles of Hartsville. He was predeceased by one brother, Harold Babb Bell, and by one sister, Lula Mae Vaughn.

GLENN A. BEST
Funeral services for Glenn Albert Best, 74, were held at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2005, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard D. Hooper officiated with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Best died Friday, July 29. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late George C. and Hattie Fields Best. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Formerly of Lydia, Glenn and Bonnie moved to Sumter in 1992. He served his country in the U.S. Marines. He was an avid golfer, volunteer fireman in Lydia, farmer and loved to work in the yards and on the farm.

Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Best of Sumter; son and daughter-in-law, Dondi A. and Nancy Best of Gilbert; daughters and son-in-law, Carol and Danny Bradham of Lexington, Glenda Best of Columbia; sister, Mildred Shoemake; brother and sisters-in-law, Jeryl and Frances Best of Lydia, Katie Best of Lydia; grandchildren, Amanda Taylor, Nathan Bradham, Taylor Bradham, Nicholas Best, Malory Best; great-grandchild, Ashton Best.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Odell Best, and his sister, Mildred Shoemake.

ETHEL McCAULEY
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Ethel Scarboro Allen McCauley, 84, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2005, at Trinity United Methodist Church with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens.

Mrs. McCauley died Friday, July 29, at Methodist Manor. She was born in Anson County, N.C., daughter of the late A.M. and Leola Sullivan Scarboro. She was a devoted housewife and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Winston Rogers Sunday School Class. Surviving are her husband, James Robert “Bob” McCauley of Florence, two sons: Marshall (Mintha) Beane of Lewisville, N.C., William Herman “Bubba” Allen of Darlington, a daughter, Mrs. Jayne A. (Chip) Lambert of Spartanburg; a stepdaughter, Mrs. June (James) Ross of Georgetown, one grandchild, two step grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Jessie Hugh Scarboro of Ashboro, N.C.; and two sisters, Martha S. Flynn of Mt. Pleasant and Louise S. Hedrick of Atlanta, Ga.

Mrs. McCauley was preceded in death by her first husband, Herman Allen.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Winston Rogers Sunday School Class.

LILLIE BEE
Lillie Bee, 58, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at Morrell Memorial Convalescent Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

DONNIE G. GAINEY
Graveside services for Donnie Gene Gainey, 50, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, at Damascus cemetery. The Rev. Ed Griggs officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.

Mr. Gainey died Friday, July 29. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late John Dawsie and EttaRee Freeman Gainey.

Surviving are his wife, Lynn Kelly Gainey of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Gene and Ashley Kelly, Ronnie Gainey, Archie Watford, all of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Danelle Gainey and Chris Gilbert of Hartsville, Candace Cook of Chesterfield; sisters, Gloria Brunson, Sandra Kelley, Wanda Gainey, all of Hartsville; brothers, Jimmy Gainey, Larry Gainey, both of Hartsville; grandchildren, Kayleigh Gilbert and Kelsey Watford.

He was preceded in death by his grandchild, Destiny Kelly.

CHRISTINE G. SMITH
Funeral services for Christine Grantham Smith, 82, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2005, at Spring Branch Baptist Church. The Revs. Buddy Amerson and Mike Parnell officiated with burial in Tabernacle United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith, widow of R.C. Smith, died Thursday, July 28. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Nick and Sudie Outlaw Grantham. She was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. James Z. and Olivia Smith, Edwin T. and Salina Smith, all of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Daphene and Donald Johnson, Chrystal and Don Hall, all of Hartsville; sisters, Thelma Ward of Bishopville, Mayette Galloway of Hartsville; brother, Shadrack (Shady) Grantham of Hartsville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

GLENNIE K. DRIGGERS
Funeral services for Glennie Kay Gainey Driggers, 55, were held at noon, Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. James A. Baxley officiated with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Driggers, widow of Ronald Terry Driggers, died Thursday, July 28. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Glenn Paul and Beulah Mae Hopkins Gainey. She was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Terina Driggers of Florence; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and William Tanner of Florence; sister, Barbara Harness of Marion; brother, Ronnie Gainey; grandchildren, Kricket Driggers, Brandy Driggers, Jennifer Tanner, Glennie Tanner, Terry Driggers, Timothy Driggers, Sam Tanner and Blake Tanner.

EARLINE S. HOWLE
Services for Earline Sanders Howle, 76, widow of Carl Edward Howle, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 3, 2005, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Magnolia cemetery.

Mrs. Howle died on Sunday, July 31. Born in Hartsville, she was the daughter of Ebbie and Dovie Cassidy Sanders; daughters, Rhonda (Marvin) Holloman of Florence, Terry (Donald) Blackwell of Hartsville; sister, Betty Joyce Whitley of Lancaster; grandchildren, Russell Goff, Donna and Thomas Blackwell, Amber Ellis, Leslie Summerford; great-grandchildren, Chad Barefoot and Kelsey Dillard.

She was preceded in death by a son, Tony Edward Howle.
