LOUIS 'MAC' GRIGGS
Funeral services for Louis McIver 'Mac' Griggs, 65, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ed Griggs officiating with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Griggs died Saturday, June 24. Born in Darlington, he was a son of the late Monroe and Louise Hall Griggs. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Marines and was employed with Badcock Furniture.

Surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law, Terese and Derrick Riley of Hartsville, Crystal and Troy Bivens of Gaston, Donna and Jeffery Shaw of Gilbert; brothers, Purvis Griggs of Lynn, Mass., Alton Griggs of Hartsville; grandchildren, Keith Freeman, Victoria Riley, Savanna Bivens, Chelsey Bivens, Laityn Shaw, Dustin Shaw, Ryan Shaw, Jeff Shaw. He was preceded in death by his brother, Harley Griggs.

FRANK WINDHAM
LAMAR - Funeral services for Frank Windham, 91, were held 5 p.m. Sunday, June 25, 2006, in the Lamar Chapel of Belk Funeral Home, with interment in Lamar Memorial cemetery.

Mr. Windham died at his home, Friday, June 23. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Ollie and Fannie Sutton Windham. He was married to the late Elizabeth Reynolds Windham. Mr. Windham had retired from the Darlington County School District and attended Lamar Free Will Baptist Church. He enjoyed visiting with all his friends around Lamar.

Surviving are one son, Kenneth (Charmaine) Windham of Corpus Christi, Texas, and one daughter, Frances W. (Jeryl) Best of Lydia; grandchildren, Sue (George) Tomlinson, Tommy Grooms, Kem (Earl) Stokes, Pam (James) Flowers, Jerri Best, Tammy (Monty) Nichols, Dawn (John) Heinaman, Darlene (Mark) Yaklin, Holly (Cole) Courts; 16 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Windham was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty W. Grooms.

ALVA L. McCASKILL, JR.
BISHOPVILLE - Graveside services for Alva Laverne McCaskill Jr., 73, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2006, in the St. Matthews United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville.

Mr. McCaskill died Saturday, June 24, of pulmonary fibrosis. He was born May 30, 1933, the son of the late Alva L. McCaskill Sr. and Clara Stokes McCaskill. He was the owenr of Lyndale Farms where he bred registered Guernsey dairy cattle for 40 years. He was a 1954 graduate of Clemson University and served in the U.S. Army. A lifetime member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church, he served as chairman of the Board of Directors for the church. He was a life member of the Dairy Hall of Fame and his membership in the American Guernsey Cattle Club brought him world-wide friendships. He received many awards and recognition throughout his life for public service and his profession.

Mr. McCaskill served on several boards, including Farmers Telephone Cooperative, Cassatt Water Co., Lee County Farm Bureau, Lee County Arts Council Foundation, and the Lee County Disabilities and Special Needs Board and Foundation. He was a former member of the Lee County Council. He was a Mason in Lucknow Lodge No. 212 and as a Shriner with the Omar Temple, was a member of the Jolly Jeepsters and Red Fez Club.

Mr. McCaskill is survived by his wife, JoAnne Chamblee McCaskill, and his son, Dr. Al (Karen) McCaskill III, of Bishopville; his daughters, Lee McCaskill of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Ann McCaskill (Lt. Col. Timothy) McIlhenny of Langley Air Force Base, Va. He was also survived by two sisters, Etha M. Bailey of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla., and Barbara Jane Boyce of Bishopville; and grandchildren, Capt. Joshua T. Watson, MD, and Dr. Theresa Martin Watson, Alva L. McCaskill IV, Kristy McCaskill, Amber McCaskill and Micah McIlhenny.

He was predeceased by an infant son, Roger Sheldon McCaskill.

JAMES E. SLIGH
Graveside services for James Eric Sligh, 78, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 25, 2006, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Tony Medlin officiated with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the St. Luke United Methodist Church, 302 Dunlap Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Sligh, widower of Dorothy Covington Sligh, died Friday, June 23. Born in Darlington, he was a son of the late Thomas Dorsey and Pauline James Sligh. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. Mr. Sligh attended North Carolina State University and was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 33 years of service as a machine design engineer. He loved woodwork and enjoyed making bowls and wildlife.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Fran Sligh of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Lee Lewis of Lexington; grandchildren, Will Lewis, Chrissy Lewis and Jamie Sligh.

WILLIE BRISTOW JR.
Willie Bristow Jr., 62, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at his residence after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 764 Toney James Road, Hartsville.

JUANITA GANDY
Memorial services for Juanita Gandy, 92, were held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gandy died June 18, at Morrell Nursing Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Bennie and Mary Grooms Williams. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her dear friends, Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Curry of Hartsville, and a host of many other close relatives, friends and church family.

MARY G. GILBERT
KINGSTREE - Funeral services for Mary Grace Alexander Gilbert, 79, were held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 29, 2006, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at 3 p.m.in Hebron Methodist cemetery in McBee.

Mrs. Gilbert, widow of Woodrow Wilson Gilbert, died Monday, June 26, at her residence. She was born May 25, 1927, in Patrick, a daughter of the late John Franklin and Nellie Florence Wilkerson Alexander. She was educated in Chesterfield County schools and retired as laundry manager of Orangeburg Regional Hospital. Mrs. Gilbert was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by brothers, Claude, Willie, Roosevelt and LeRoy Alexander, and a great-granddaughter, Mary Gray Reames.

Surviving are her daughter, Linda Frances G. (Chuck) Hylton of Kingstree; a sister, Helen A. Tuttle of Moncks Corner; three brothers, James Coleman Alexander, John F. Alexander, both of Hartsville, and Thomas Keith Alexander of Goldsboro, N.C.; grandchildren, J. Brandon Hylton of Florence and Brittany H. Reames of Williamsburg, Va., and great-grandchildren, Anna Kayne Reames, Margaret Grace Reames and Elizabeth Frances Reames all of Williamsburg, Va.

Memorials may be made to Kingstree First Baptist Church, 400 N. Academy St., Kingstree, SC 29556.

RUBY GORDON
Graveside services for Ruby Jacqueline Gainey Gordon, 84, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Beasley cemetery. with the Rev. Ed Griggs officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gordon, widow of Duke Gordan, died Monday, June 26. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late E. V. and Margaret Ann Gainey Gainey.

Surviving are her daughters, Jet Orr Collins and Joyce Lemay, both of Columbia; grandsons and spouses, Steven and Donna Orr, James and Rhonda Orr; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Leroy Gainey, Ashton Gainey, Jerome Gainey; sisters, Eula Hendrix, Avery Truett, Teddie Culpepper, Nora Bell Talbert, Beulah Beasley, Lula Beasley and Geneva Gainey.

MARTY W. MINCEY
Funeral services for Marty Wayne Mincey, 40, will be held at 3 p.m. today, June 30, 2006, at Lakeview Baptist Church.

The Revs. Charles Boswell and Sammy Ward will officiate, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.

The family will receive friends following the service in the Family Life Center. Memorials may be made to the Marty Mincey Fund, c/o First Citizens, 208 W. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Mincey died Tuesday, June 27. Born in Loris, he was a son of Patricia Ann Elvis Rein and David Rein and Clifton Mincey Jr. He was a 1985 graduate of Loris High School and received a BS degree in Civil Engineering and a BS degree in business from Francis Marion University. He was a business owner and known throughout the Hartsville Community. He was a very active parent in the Hartsville Northern Baseball League and served as a board member from 1995-2002. One of Coach Marty's proudest accomplishments and honors was serving as assistant manager in 1999 and manager in 2000 when the Hartsville Northern became the South Carolina Dixie Youth state champions. He will always be known as a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, friend and coach.

Surviving are his wife, Leslie Owens Mincey of Hartsville; sons, Patrick Mincey, Cody Mincey and Tristin Mincey, all of Hartsville; parents, Patricia and David Rein of Hanahan; father, Clifton Mincey of Loris; and sister, Brandy Rein of Hanahan.

JAQUIS BARRETT
Funeral services for Jaquis Dominque Barrett were held on Sunday, July 2, 2006, at 3 p.m. at the Full Word Ministry COGICJ. The burial followed in the L-Pac cemetery in Bishopville, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. Pastor Margaret Prescott officiated the service.

Mr. Barrett was born Jan. 15, 1992, a son of Phyllis Barrett and Phillip Wilson. He was preparing to go to the ninth grade at Hartsville High School. He was a member of Full Word Ministry COGICJ Inc. in Hartsville. He also attended Browntown Temple Holiness Church where he sang on the Browntown Sunbeam Choir.

Jaquis loved all sports, but he especially liked football. He played for a number of years with 'The Falcons' of the Bishopville Recreational League. He also loved to fish and had a special love for animals. Jaquis was well known and had a gift of bringing people together in friendship. Many may wonder why certain things happened but Jaquis' love of people and nature was God's way of showing others the love that he truly had for his fellow man. His presence from among us will be missed by both family and friends alike. One of his sisters, Jessica McKennzie preceded him in death.

Surviving to cherish the wonderful and loving memory of Jaquis Dominique Barrett in addition to his mother, Phyllis Barrett of Hartsville, and his father, Phillip (Ella Mae) Wilson of Bishopville, are four sisters, Valerie Chestnut of Hartsville, Phillicia McKennzie of Sumter, Lawanda Halley and Shakeia Wilson both of Bishopville; three brothers, Rafeal Barrett of Hartsville, Hirtrell Halley and Shaquille Wilson both of Bishopville; his maternal grandparents, Felix and Valerie Chestnut of Paterson, N.J.; his paternal grandmother, Edna Wilson of Bishopville; his special cousins, Kentrell Chestnut and Kendrick Wesley both of Hartsville; his special friend, Ann Dubose-Coates of Hartsville; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and very close friends.

BUCK GAINEY
Graveside services for James Perry 'J Buck' Gainey, 79, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Gainey cemetery. The Rev. Margaret Hicks officiated, with Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in charge.

Mr. Gainey died Tuesday, July 4. Born in Chesterfield, he was a son of the late Sebe Cornelius and Roxie Gainey Gainey. Mr. Gainey will be greatly missed by his family, friends and his two special grandsons, Joshua and Jonathan Palacios.

Surviving are his sons and daughter-in-law, James Richard Gainey, Sebe Perry and Connie Gainey, all of McBee; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and George Rollins of Bishopville, Kitty and Juan Eufracio of McBee, Cynthia Gainey and Michael Summerford, and Kerry and Tony Bell, all of Hartsville; sisters, Mary Yarborough, Mazel Atkinson and Diane McWhorter, all of Hartsville; brothers, Daythurn Gainey of McBee, Ray Gainey of Bishopville; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Myrton Gainey; sister, Myrtle Branham.

MAZAREE GILLESPIE
Mrs. Mazaree Gillespie died on Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at her residence after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home.

EMMA PRATT
COLUMBIA - Funeral services for Emma Watts Stone Pratt, 92, were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Crescent Hill Baptist Church with interment following in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Project at William Hall, PO Box 202, Columbia, SC 29202 or Crescent Hill Baptist Church, 2659 Two Notch Road, Columbia, SC 29204.

Born Aug. 13, 1913, in Lee County, Mrs. Pratt was a daughter of the late Clarence B. Watts and Fannie Davis Watts. She had formerly worked as a weaver for Mt. Vernon Mills. A former member of Harrison Road, Holland Avenue and Crescent Hill Baptist Churches, in later years she attended St. Andrews Baptist Church. Mrs. Pratt, a self-taught pianist, loved to play, sing and entertain in all the churches she attended, as well as at family gatherings and senior care facilities. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she exemplified Christ's love in all she did for all she came in contact with.

Survivors include her sister, Madge (C.B.) Gooding of Columbia; brothers, Marion Watts of Columbia, Carl Watts of Bishopville; grandsons, Van E. Holmes and wife, Lynn of Chapin, Wayne A. Holmes of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Emily, Brandon and Noel Holmes and Wayne Holmes Jr.

Those who preceded her in death include her husbands, Ervin G. Stone and Horace Pratt; daughter, Betty Sue Starnes; three sisters; four brothers.

WALTER W. SESSOMS
DARLINGTON - Graveside services for Walter W. Sessoms, 72, will be held Saturday, July 8, 2006, at 11 a.m. in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Sessoms, business and civic leader, of Atlanta and Darlington, died Sunday, July 2, at his Sandy Springs home following a brief illness. He was born Jan. 14, 1934, in Darlington to Frank M. Sessoms and Maggie Sessoms. He retired in 1997 as group president of BellSouth Telecommunications. He began his career with Southern Bell in 1956 in Columbia. From 1957 to 1959, he served as a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Mr. Sessoms was widely known for his plainspoken good humor, love of baseball, compassion for others and his encouraging management style. His interests during retirement included a continued commitment to education at all levels, his alma mater, Wofford College, and his dedication to numerous non-profit organizations. In addition, Mr. Sessoms served as chairman of the Board of Directors for the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. He served as a member of the Governor's Education Reform Commission and Georgia State Board of Education. He was a 1956 graduate of Wofford College where he earned a degree in economics and business administration. In 1995, he was awarded an honorary doctorate. At the time of his death, Mr. Sessoms was serving his second term on the Wofford Board of Trustees.

Mr. Sessoms is survived by his wife of 49 years, Harriet Ann Floyd Sessoms; his children, Lee Sessoms and Kay Jacobi; his daughter-in-law Brooke Sessoms; son-in-law Geoff Jacobi; and grandchildren Maggie and Chris Sessoms and Ann Morgan and Campbell Jacobi; his brothers, Ted Sessoms and Frank Sessoms, and his sister, Annette Black Martin, all of Darlington, and his older sister Kathryn McLaurin of Fayetteville, N.C.

His daughter, Molly Sessoms and his siblings Ethyl Albrecht, Jo Cox and Earlene Morgan preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Epworth Children's Home, PO Box 50466, Columbia, SC 29250; Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Dr. NE, Atlanta, GA 30319; or to a hospice organization of your choice.
