Mrs. Catherine L. Gass - Orangeburg

The funeral for Mrs. Catherine L. Gass, 69, of 152 Valiant Drive, Orangeburg, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at New Light United Methodist Church, Orangeburg, with the Rev. Norman A. Brown officiating. Burial will be in Belleville Memorial Gardens.

The casket will be placed in the church at noon.

Pallbearers will be United Methodist Men.

Mrs. Catherine Delores Lewis Gass entered into eternal life at her home on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008. Born in Orangeburg on Sept. 15, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Willie Jamison and the late Willa Dudley.

She received her early education at the Great Branch Community School and later graduated from George Washington Carver High School. After graduating from high school, she pursued higher education at Claflin University in Orangeburg, where she received a bachelor of science degree in early childhood education. Her professional career provided her the opportunity to serve as a supervisor at the North Central Bronx Hospital in Bronx, N.Y., from which she retired.

She was married to Oscar "Bubba" Gass and to this union two sons were born. One son preceded her in death.

Her strong faith in God influenced her involvement in the church at an early age. She was an active member of St. Matthews AME in Bronx, where she held membership in several organizations. After returning home to Orangeburg, she recommitted her life to New Light United Methodist with her prayer, her presence, her gifts and her services.

She leaves behind three sons, Roderick (Lisa), Damon (Keisha) and Steve; three grandchildren, Jare, Jasmine and Justin; two sisters, Willa Dean and Cassandra; two brothers, MacArthur and Timothy; two aunts, Ruth Waller and Lessie Lewis; one uncle, Leroy Lewis; sisters-in-law, Romana Wilson (Fla.), Mary Green and Linda Hazel, both of South Carolina; a special friend, Sonniy Bonnette and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Friends may call at the residence and at Glover's Funeral Home.

John W. Sanders - Barnwell

ULMER -- John Whittier Sanders, 54, passed away unexpectedly at his home in the Big Fork Section of Barnwell County.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Robert Sanders, and his brother, Jerome Pate Sanders. He graduated from Walterboro High School and the University of South Carolina and remained an avid Gamecock fan.

After retiring from the family farm, John, a talented artist, spent his days creating wonderful quirky works of art that delighted his friends and family.

He leaves his brother, Earl Sanders, his brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Fran Sanders, and the love of his life Peggy Zeigler.

On Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at 10 a.m., the family will receive friends at Keith Smith Funeral Services, 128 Water St., Allendale, followed by a graveside service in the Swallow Savannah Cemetery at 11 a.m. Memorials may be sent to University of South Carolina at Salkehatchie, P.O. Box 16, Allendale, SC 29810.

Pastor Elder Mary Louise Govan

Funeral services for Pastor Elder Mary Louise Govan, 56, of 128 Devine Court, Orangeburg, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2008, at Beulah Refuge Tabernacle Church of Our Lord and Jesus Christ, Landfill Road, Orangeburg, with Elder David Smith Pastor and Apostle Willie C. Stroman officiating. Burial will be in the Belleville Memorial Gardens.

Pastor Govan died Thursday, July 17, at the Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

She was born October 18, 1951, to Mr. Albert Dixon and the late Mother Louise Gissentanna in Orangeburg. Pastor Govan was reared in the home of Elder Joseph and Mother Katie Dash. As a child, she attended Nix Elementary School, Sharperson Middle School and graduated from Wilkinson High School. She was also a graduate of Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, South Carolina State University and a graduate student of Lesley University. For several years, she taught second grade at Denmark-Olar Elementary.

Pastor Govan's walk with Christ began at Mount Calvary Church of God at the age of 12. At the tender age of 14, she was called into the ministry and never looked back. Pastor Govan was married to the late Brother Eugene Govan Jr. To this union, five children were born. While in Orangeburg, she was a faithful member of Gospel Holiness Church, where she served as Assistant Pastor for several years under the leadership of Mother Arnesa Clark. She was later worshiped with Powerhouse of Prayer, Pastor George Scott.

In 1983, Pastor and Brother Govan moved to Hinesville, Ga., where she was a faithful member and evangelist at Mount Sinai Holiness Church. After returning to Orangeburg, she was Assistant Pastor of St. Sinai Holiness Church No. 3 of North and then became the Pastor of this assembly. In 2006, she became a member of Non-Denominational Church of Deliverance under the leadership of Apostle Willie C. Stroman. She was a dedicated assistant to Apostle Stroman as well as a faithful prayer warrior. Here she served diligently as a giver. She gave of herself in time and financially.

Pastor Govan dedicated her life to serving God and touching everyone's life that she met through the ministry of Jesus Christ our Savior. Her grandparents, Elder Joseph Dash and Mother Katie Dash, preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her mother, Louise Gissentanna, her husband, Brother Eugene Govan Jr., her sister, Missionary Elaine Gissentanna and a brother, Albert Dixon Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory, five children, Kelvin Govan of North Charleston, Sister Kimberly Govan of Jacksonville, Fla., Rodney Govan of Orangeburg, Sister Kendera Govan of the home and Elder Robin Govan of the home; her father, Brother Albert (Inell) Dixon; three sisters, Missionary Rutha Dash, Pastor Mary Dixon and Ms. Keisha Dixon, all of Orangeburg; five brothers, Pastor Michael (Doreen) Gissentanna of Freeport, N.Y., Mr. Christopher (Grace) Dixon of Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Freddie Lee Dixon, Mr. Stanley Dixon and Mr. Travis Dixon, all of Orangeburg; one granddaughter, I'Jahnae Fuller of Orangeburg; two special sisters in the Lord, Elder Catherine Sweet and Pastor Mary Walker, both of Orangeburg; one sister-in-law, Ms. Patricia Govan; two brothers-in-law, Mr. Monroe (Ernestine) Govan and Mr. Melvin (Marie) Govan of Neptune, N.J.; one uncle, Deacon David Gissentanna of Orangeburg; one god-daughter, Ms. Angela Walker; a host of nieces, nephews, special cousins, cousins and many, many close friends.

Friends may call at the residence and at Glover's Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Leroy Smith

Funeral services for Leroy Smith, 61, of 136 Bamberg Village Apartments, Bamberg, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2008, in the Johnson-Dash Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Montgomery and the Rev. D. McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in the Bamberg County Memory Gardens.

Mr. Smith died Thursday, July 17.

He was born August 26, 1946, a son of the late Winchester and Lila Milligan Smith. He was educated in the public schools of Blackville. He was employed as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator for more than 35 years. Leroy was united in holy matrimony to Artha M. English Smith. This union was blessed with four beautiful and loving children.

Survivors include his wife, Artha M. English Smith; two sons, Leroy (Sherri) Smith Jr. and Shawntel Smith; two daughters, Sherry (Timothy) Thompson and Carolyn Smith; three brothers, Miller (Irma) Smith, Winchester Smith and James (Malinda) Smith; two grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Friends may call at the residence and at the funeral home.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson-Dash Funeral Home of Bamberg.

Joseph Joe Favor

Joseph "Joe" Favor, 74, of 217 Peachtree Street, Edgefield, formerly of Swansea, died Friday, July 18, 2008, at the University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

Funeral services will be announced by W. B. Crumel Funeral Home of North.

Friends may call at Mr. Favor's residence in Edgefield and at the funeral home.

Jackie Holston Ashe

Jackie Holston Ashe, 65, of 1945 Broughton St., Orangeburg, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at MUSC Hospital in Charleston.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at First Baptist Church in Orangeburg, with the Rev. Tony Pipkins and the Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Batesburg Cemetery in Batesburg, directed by Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Orangeburg.

Active pallbearers will be Mark Trimmier, Cecil Adams, Curt Brown, Doug Johnson, Walter Smoak and Rodney Hughes.

She was born November 23, 1942, in Richland County, the daughter of Wilbur Holston and the late Leah Brown Holston. She was a member of Crosland Memorial Baptist Church in Rowesville and was retired from Community Resource Bank, formerly Orangeburg National Bank, as a Customer Service Representative.

Survivors include one son, Jeff (Lee) Ashe of Orangeburg; one daughter, Angela Huckabee of Lexington; one brother, Johnny Holston of Orangeburg; four grandchildren, Ashton Huckabee and Landon Huckabee, Bailey Ashe and Wil Gilland; cousin, Linda B. Adams of North.

Friends may call at the residence of Jeff and Lee Ashe, 2839 Wexford Drive, Orangeburg.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, 2875 Columbia Road, Orangeburg.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of TRMC, P.O. Box 2352, Orangeburg, SC 29116.

Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Orangeburg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Geneva Haigler

Mrs. Geneva Haigler, 92, of 1873 Coulter Road, Orangeburg, died Saturday, July 19, 2008, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Funeral services will be announced by Glover's Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Friends may call at the residence and at the funeral home.
