Richard Morrison

McCLELLANVILLE — Richard Tillia Morrison, VI, 69, died Friday, January 7, 2005, at the Medical University of S.C. Hospital in Charleston.

Mr. Morrison was born in Charleston on October 17, 1935, a son of the late Richard Tillia Morrison, V and Pearl Bodiford Morrison. He was a graduate of McClellanville High School and attended the University of South Carolina. Mr. Morrison served in the S.C. Air National Guard as a fighter pilot and attained the rank of Captain. He was a retired airline pilot for Pan American World Airways and a member of New Wappetaw Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are: his wife, Anne Haas Morrison of McClellanville; a son, Richard T. Morrison, VII of McClellanville; a brother, Forest B. Morrison of McClellanville; and a sister, Charlotte M. Armstrong of Pinetops, N.C.

Funeral services will be three o’clock Sunday afternoon, January 9, 2005, at the graveside in New Wappetaw Presbyterian Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Walter G. Cook.

Mary Summers

REEVESVILLE — Mary Louise (Weasie) Summers, 87 of 6204 Badham Drive died Friday January 7, 2005 in the Summerville Medical Center.

Funeral Services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bobby Etheridge officiating. Burial will follow in the Magnolia Cemetery, Reevesville.

Pallbearers will be Derek Weathers, Bryan Weathers, Ricky Hughes, Robbie Ruple, Joey Ruple, and Trey Ruple.

Mrs. Summers was born June 6, 1917 in Reevesville a daughter of the late Edward McCrady Bryant and Mollie Eadon Bryant. She was the widow of John Wesley Summers and a member of Reevesville Baptist Church. She was predeceased by brothers, Edward Bryant, Sherod Bryant, Richard Bryant, and sisters, Emma Butler and Mattie Ruple.

Surviving are, a brother, James E. (Jim) Bryant, St. George and a sister, Marjorie (Sal) Lovett, Hanahan; Nephews, Johnny Ruple, Johns Island and Eddie Ruple, West Columbia; Nieces, Mary B. Wagers, St. George, Ann Weathers, Reevesville, Jane Campbell, and Barbara Woodard, Hanahan, and Dicksie J. Bryant, West Columbia. Great nephews; Bryan and Derek Weathers, Edward Bryant, John Campbell, Robbie, Joey and Trey Ruple. Great Nieces; Angie Kinsey, Cynthia Riley, Summer Ruple, Ashley Bryant, Michelle Corley and Cami Ruple.

Memorials may be made to Magnolia Cemetery, in care of Patricia Walters, 6680 Johnston Avenue, Reevesville, SC 29471.

Paul Nelson

UNION — Mr. Paul W. Nelson, age 87, of 354 Beltline Rd., Union, widower of Margaret Stroud Nelson, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005 at 4:30 P.M. in Wallace Thomson Hospital from injuries received in an accident.

Mr. Nelson was born in Union on March 26, 1917, a son of the late Paul Franklin Nelson and Eloise Brock Nelson. He was a member of New Life Baptist Church and was a retired automobile mechanic with Roper Chevrolet of Union. Mr. Nelson was a Veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are two daughters: Rita W. Hammond of Lowell, N.C. and Linda N. Hendrix of Little Mountain; two sons: Kenneth A. Nelson of Lexington and Ronald Wesley Nelson of Chapin; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday at New Life Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Clarence Adkins and Rev. Ron Culbertson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Members of the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class of New Life Baptist Church are asked to assemble at the church Monday at 1:45 P.M. to form the honorary escort.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. and will be placed in the church at 1:00 P.M. Monday to await the hour of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Life Baptist Church Building Fund, 502 Meansville Rd., Union, S.C. 29379.

The family is at the home, 354 Beltline Rd., Union.

Irby Hipp Jr.

ROCK HILL — Mr. Irby Shell Hipp Jr., 82, of 1033 Myrtle Drive, peacefully died Friday, January 7, 2005 in Piedmont Medical Center. A memorial service will be conducted Sunday afternoon, January 9, at 2:00 pm at Westminister Presbyterian Church with Dr. Shelton Sanford and Dr. Bill Fox officiating. Prior to the memorial service, friends and family are invited to the burial service at 1:15 pm at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Irby was born on June 7 1922, in Clinton, SC to Irby Shell Hipp, Sr. and Agnes Flynn Hipp. He was a veteran of World War II. He served with the 2nd Batallion, F Company, 23rd Regiment, 4th Marine Division, in the Pacific. He participated in four first wave landings: Roi Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. After the war, he attended Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. He was married to Alicia Wallace of Rock Hill, SC, in February, 1949. They were married for almost 56 years. He worked with Celanese Fibers Company in Rock Hill from 1949 to 1962, and with Celanese Fibers Marketing Company in Charlotte, NC from 1962 until his retirement in 1983. Irby was involved as a Pack Leader in the Cub Scouts program with his sons. He was also a Life Member of Masonic Lodge #111 and Hejaz Temple. After Irby’s retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and participating in annual Marine Corps Company reunions, which he helped to start in 1984.

Irby is survived, in addition to his wife, Liddie; by his son, Irby S. Hipp, III, and wife, Fran, and his son, James W. Hipp and wife, Mary, all of Columbia, SC. Also surviving are sister, Caroline Avery, and niece, Agnes Lyles; five grandchildren: Bennett Hipp and Sarah Hipp, children of Jim; Lisa Hipp Farrell, John Hipp, and Greg Hipp, children of Irby, III: and two great-grandchildren, Brittany and Erin Farrell. Irby was preceded in death by his sister, Agnes Flynn Hipp.

Visitation was Saturday, January 8, 2005 from 7:00-8:30 pm at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Memorials may be made to Westminister Presbyterian Church, the MS Society, 9844 Southern Pines Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28273, or to a charity of choice.

Gregory Monroe

COLUMBIA — Funeral Services for Mr. Gregory John Monroe, 58, of Columbia, will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday, January 10, 2005, at Shandon Baptist Church. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, at Greenlawn Funeral Home, there will also be a viewing at Shandon Bapt. Ch. 1 hour prior to service. Reverends Barry Gray and Adrian Despres will officiate. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Serenity Gardens. Memorials may be made to Shandon Baptist Church, Youth Ministries or Missions, 5250 Forest Dr., Columbia, SC 29206.

Gregory John Monroe was born November 18, 1946, in Pittsburgh, PA, a son of the late John and Margaret Beran Monroe. Mr. Monroe served in the U.S. Navy from 1965-1967 aboard the USS Intrepid, he earned a BS and MA in education and taught in the Pittsburgh public school system; in 1983 he transferred with Westinghouse to Columbia, SC. Gregg was a sales distributor for Biomet, Inc. for South Carolina from 1988-2002. He was a active member of Shadon Baptist Church, his Community and the SVHS wrestling program. Gregg was a great encourager, a generous giver and always a loving and faithful husband and father.

Surviving to honor and cherish his memory are his wife of 30 years, Sharon; daughter, Brooke; sons, Chad and Jace; sister, Debbie Mangan of Pittsburgh, PA; father and mother-in-law, Gil and Loraine Post, and many loved and devoted relatives.

Mildred Moore

CHERAW — Mrs. Mildred Duvall Moore, age 96, died Friday, January 7, 2005. Born in Cheraw, she was the daughter of Ernest and Mildred McCabe Duvall. She was married to the late Col. Roy C. Moore. She was a graduate of Converse College. She also served on the board of directors of B.C. Moore Department Stores, Moore Brothers, Inc. and Moore Brothers, Inc. of Georgia. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Cheraw.

Funeral services will be held by the graveside on Sunday, January 9, 2005 at 2:00 pm in Old St. David’s Cemetery in Cheraw.

Memorials may be made in the name of Mildred D. Moore to the First United Methodist Church Organ Restoration Fund, P.O. Box 129 Cheraw, SC 29520 or St. David’s Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 1196, Cheraw, SC 29520.

Norton Funeral Home of Cheraw is serving the Moore family.

Gladys Avant

GEORGETOWN — Services for Gladys Vernell Parsons Avant, 75, widow of Ted Avant, will be held at 4 p.m. today at New Vision Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a member, with burial in Poplar Hill Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. Morris Funeral Home, Hemingway, is in charge. Born in Williamsburg Co. to Eli and Sally Dennis Parsons, she died Jan. 7, 2005. Surviving five children; 14 grands; 7 great-grandchildren.

John Brigman

BENNETTSVILLE — Services for John Wesley Brigman, 73, will be held at 3 p.m. Monday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Antioch UMC with burial in Bessie Brigman Family Cemetery. Whitner-Evans Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Marlboro Co. to Jessie and Bessie Chavis Brigman, he died Jan. 7, 2005. Surviving are wife, Betty Purvis Brigman; two sons; four daughters; one sister; 13 grands; eight great-grandchildren.

Mildred Britton

CHESTER — Services for Mildred Ruth Britton, 82, retired with Springs Industries, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday (visitation 6-7 tonight) at Barron Funeral Home with burial in Westside Cemetery, Lancaster. Born in Camden to William and Margie Britton, she died January 7, 2005. She was a member of Second Baptist Church. Surviving are sister, Elizabeth Neal; nieces; nephews.
