Carrie Faulkenberry

LANCASTER — Services for Carrie H. Faulkenberry, 89, widow of John Faulkenberry, 11 a.m. Wednesday: Hartley Funeral Home (10 a.m. visitation). Burial: Midway Baptist Church Cemetery. Born in Lancaster Co. to Willie and Pearlie Morgan Hilton, she died Jan. 24, 2005. Surviving: daughters, Betty Vincent, Mary Hammond; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; siblings, Q. Ann Hinson, Labon, W.J. Hilton, Mildred Catoe.

Dr. C.A. Dufford

NEWBERRY — C.A. Dufford, Jr., M.D., 83, of Springfield Place, Newberry, died Monday, January 24, 2005, at his residence.

Dr. Dufford was born July 10, 1921 in Kingstree, South Carolina, a son of the late C.A. Dufford, Sr. and Alma Cole Dufford.

He was a 1942 graduate of Newberry College and entered the US Army. Under an Army program he received his medical degree with a specialization in pediatrics from The Medical College of South Carolina in 1945. After serving in his medical capacity in the army in Japan, he returned to complete a medical residency in Newark, New Jersey and the old Columbia Hospital. Dr. Dufford began his practice in pediatrics in Newberry in 1950 and practiced until January 1997.

In 2003 The Dufford Playground, located on the front lawn of Newberry County Memorial Hospital, was dedicated in honor of the “Baby Doctor” and his 50 years of service to the community’s children. “I’m the only person I know who got paid to play. I love those kids,” Dufford once said.

Dr. Dufford was a member of The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry, The Newberry County Medical Society and The Country Club of Newberry.

A life-long supporter and friend of Newberry College, Dr. Dufford served as a member of the Newberry College Board of Trustees for 23 years from 1954 until 1977. He received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree in 1998 from his alma mater. Dr. Dufford was also active in athletics at Newberry College, where he helped establish the Indian Club and served as team physician from 1954 until 1998. In his honor, his friends established the C. A. Dufford, Jr. athletic scholarship in 1995. In July 1995 the Dufford siblings (Dr. C.A. Dufford, Jr., Virginia Dufford, Doris Dufford and Dr. W.E. [Bill] Dufford) donated their family home to the College.

Dr. Dufford is survived by his sister Doris Dufford of Newberry and a brother Dr. William E. (Bill) Dufford of Columbia. He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Dufford.

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 25 at the Dufford Alumni House, Newberry College Campus, from 5:30 until 7:30 pm.

Funeral services for Dr. C.A. Dufford, Jr. will be conducted at 2:00 pm Wednesday, January 26 at A.G. D. Wiles Chapel on the Newberry College campus by the Reverend Steve Counts, pastor of The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry, and the Reverend Dr. Beverly Aurand, Newberry College pastor. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Newberry College Endowment Fund, 2100 College St. Newberry, SC 29108.

Ezekiel Goode Jr.

NINETY SIX — Services with burial for Ezekiel Goode Jr., 82, WWII veteran, son of Ezekiel Sr. and Rachel Payne Goode, 1 p.m. Wednesday: Pine Pleasant Baptist Church, where he was a Sr. Choir Leader. Butler & Sons Funeral Home, Saluda is in charge. Surviving: wife, Naomi B. Goode; children, Randolph, Ezekiel III Goode, Rachel Glover, Dorothy Harry; sisters, Ella Booker, Pauline Carroll; others.

Edith Elliott

COLUMBIA — Services for Edith McDowell Elliott, 80, will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Kathwood Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carolina Children’s Home or Kathwood Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the residence. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Elliott, wife of the late Joseph C. “Joe” Elliott, died Monday, January 24, 2005. Born in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of the late William Reuben and Annie Crawley McDowell. In 1981 she retired after thirty-seven years with Southern Bell. She was a member of Telephone Pioneers, Kathwood Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class which will act as honorary pallbearers along with Nathalie Gregory, Ann Davis, Madge Jeter, Bonnell McCarthy, Cappy Montondo, Katherine Simpson, Jean Smith and Esther Struhs.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra E. and Jim Ullery of Aiken and Cindy E. and Henry Maturi of Pacific Grove, Calif.; Joe’s daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Joe and Lenny Coyner of Ruckersville, Va. and Margie Lee and Jimmy Elliott of West Point, Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Kathryn and Garland Bennett of Gretna, Va.; her three grandchildren; in addition to Joe’s three grandchildren; Henry’s son; and Joe’s seven great-grandchildren.

For their excellent care, the family would like to thank: Forest Acres Police Department; Richland County EMS; Providence Hospital Emergency Room; Dr. Victoria Samuels; Lexington Medical Center, 3rd Floor ICU, especially David and Yves; and Lexington Medical Center, 5th Floor Surgical, especially Bobbie, Donald, Mary, Norma and Tina.

Lila Browder

EASTOVER — Services for Lila Gladys Browder, 69, of Eastover, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2005 in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Pastor Chuck Lackey and Rev. Kenneth Jackson. Burial will follow at Olympia Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Research, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mrs. Browder died Sunday, January 23, 2005. Born in Orangeburg, she was a daughter of the late Harry Lee and Mary Frances Brown McCollum. A lifetime resident, Mrs. Browder was a member of Grace Bible Alliance Church.

Surviving is her husband, Richard Browder of Eastover, daughters, Sharon Haas of Eastover, Paula Craig (Doug) of Myrtle Beach, Marie Coker (Robbie) of Elgin, Cindy Brown of Gilbert, Gail McIntosh (Joe) of Gilbert, Sandra Carraway (Joe) of Sumter, Angie Shealy (James) of Eastover; sons, Ricky McCollum (Debbie) of Pelion, Robert Martin of Manning, Ron Martin (Jeanie) of Lexington, William J. Martin, Jr. (Pamela) of Elgin, Roy Martin (Jane) of Lexington; sister, Nelly Vaughn of Columbia; brother, Eugene McCollum of Aiken; thirty-five grandchildren; and twenty-four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Browder was predeceased by a brother, William Frank McCollum and a son, Johnny Martin.

Eloise Brown

TIMMONSVILLE — Services for Eloise House Brown, 81, widow of Carlton Brown, 11 a.m. today at Sardis Baptist Church with burial in Wells Cemetery, Elliott, directed by Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Born in Lee Co. to Benjamin and Ruby Smith House, she died Jan. 23, 2005. Surviving: children, Charlie Brown, Gloria McElveen, Le-Ila Hinds, Linda Weymouth; sister, Gertrude Howell; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

George Bostock

BOWMAN — George M. Bostock died Sunday. A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg with visitation following. Memorials may be made to Hospice of T.R.M.C., 1324 Hutto St., Orangeburg, SC 29118.

William Robison Jr.

WALLACE, N.C. — Mr. William A. Robison, Jr., age 79, of 5059 U.S. 117 North, Wallace, died Tuesday February 1, 2005, at home. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Wallace Presbyterian Church. Dr. Philip Gladden will conduct the service. Burial will follow in Rockfish Memorial Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Norma Blosser Robison of the home, two sons, Charles A. Robison, Sr. and wife Diane of Garner and James A. Robison and wife Sharon of Wallace; one brother, Wilbur R. Robison of Bristow, VA; three granddaughters, Eleslie P. Patterson of Batesburg, SC, Kristin L. Robison and Mary (Katie) Robison, both of Wallace; two grandsons, Charles A. Robison, Jr. of Batesburg, SC, and Brian A. Robison of Garner; two great-granddaughters, Evelyn M. Robison and Kay E. Patterson, both of Batesburg, SC; and one great-grandson, J. Austin Robison of Batesburg, SC.

Born in Aleghany County, PA, Mr. Robison was the son of the late William A. Robison, Sr. and wife Hilda Samuelson Robison. His brother, Charles Robison, also preceded him in death. He attended Western Kentucky University, University of Southern California, University of Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Institute of Technology. Mr. Robison was employed by Union Switch & Signal Co. for twenty-three years, seven as plant manager in Batesburg, SC. He founded LECOM, Inc. in 1969 and merged this company with the Harris Corporation in 1973. He also founded Robaqua Corporation in 1978 and merged this company with General Signal Corporation in 1985. When he retired in 1989, he was vice president of the Aerotron Division of General Signal Corporation and held 28 patents in railway signaling.

Through the years Mr. Robison was an active member of the Third Primitive Methodist Church, Pittsburgh, PA, St. John’s Methodist Church, Aiken, SC, Leesville Methodist Church, Leesville, SC, and Wallace Presbyterian Church. He chaired many committees at these churches but was most proud of chairing the Building Committees at Leesville Methodist Church and Wallace Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Robison was an active member of many organizations. These include Past President Batesburg-Leesville Lions Club, Past President Batesburg-Leesville Chamber of Commerce, Past President Ponderosa Country Club and was founder of the Ridge Amateur Radio Club in Batesburg-Leesville, SC.

Honorary Casketbearers will be the Construction Committee of the Wallace Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to the Wallace Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 717, Wallace, NC 28466.

The family will receive Wednesday from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Padgett Funeral Home, 401 West Main Street, Wallace, and at their residence, 5059 U.S. 117 North, Wallace, other times.

Ervin Comer

DENMARK — Ervin “Butch” Comer, 54, 177 Alexandra Circle, formerly of 145 Butler Street, Denmark, SC, died Sunday, January 31, 2005, in the Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, Columbia, SC. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 3, 2005, at Rome Baptist Church, Denmark, SC, with the Rev. Joseph L. Tucker officiating. Burial will be in the Bamberg County Memory Gardens. Wright’s Funeral Home, Denmark, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born in Union County, a son of the late Annie Rose Comer and the late Evert Comer, Sr. He attended the public schools of Denmark, and was a client in one of the residential homes of the Bamberg County Disabilities and Special Needs Board. He joined and was baptized at Rome Baptist Church, Denmark.

Survivors include three brothers, Evert Comer, Jr. and Glenn T. Comer of Denmark and Larry Comer of Bamberg. Friends may call at the residence of his brother, Evert Comer, Jr., 5484 Carolina Highway, Denmark.

Franklin Adams

LAKE CITY — Services for Franklin L. Adams, 59, of Boston, formerly of Lake City, son of James and Annie Lee Hannah Adams, 2 p.m. Thursday at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with burial in Ninevah United Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Green’s Funeral Home. He died Jan. 26, 2005. Surviving: wife, Shirley Epps Adams of Boston; his children; his mother of Lake City; brothers and sisters.
