Furman Hughes

DENMARK — Services for Furman Hughes, 76, widower of Rosabell Hughes, are 2 p.m. Wednesday (visitation 6-8 p.m. Tuesday) at Honey Ford Baptist Church with burial in Hope Memorial Park, Barnwell. Washington ’s Funeral Home, Hampton, is in charge. Born to Johnnie and Maggie Hughes, he died Feb. 11, 2005. Surviving: wife, Birdell Hughes; seven children; seven stepchildren; grands; others.

Flossie Elliott

GASTON — Services for Ella Louise Murphy “Flossie” Elliott, 60, of Gaston, will be held at 10am Tuesday in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Rev. Charles Young. Entombment will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Congaree Baptist Church, 101 Pine Ridge Dr., West Columbia, SC 29172.

Mrs. Elliott died Saturday, February 12, 2005. Born in Columbia on March 19, 1944, she was the daughter of the late George Arthur Murphy, Sr. and Don Ella Crummie Murphy. She was a member of Congaree Baptist Church and was a retired Cosmetologist. Mrs. Elliott enjoyed reading and cooking but she was happiest when spending time with her grandchildren whom she loved very much.

Surviving are her husband, William Henry Elliott of Gaston; son, William Heath Elliott of Gaston; brother, George Murphy, Jr. of West Columbia; and grandchildren, Cameron Heath Elliott and Baileigh Belle Elliott.

Truesdale Douglas

DARLINGTON — Services for Truesdale Douglas, 76, U.S. Army Korean Conflict veteran, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Belk Funeral Home with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens. Born in Chesterfield Co. to Ben and Dollie Warren Douglas, he died Feb. 12, 2005. Surviving are wife, Mary Shoemake Douglas; son, Charles Douglas; daughters, Wanda Gates, Loretta Davis; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Helen Gibbons

MANNING — Services for Helen Morris Gibbons will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Manning First Baptist Church with burial in New Zion UMC Cemetery, New Zion. Born in New Zion to Julius and Ida Barrow Morris, she died February 13, 2005. Surviving are daughters, Angela Gibbons, Patty Wood; brother, Ray Morris; sisters, Virginia Webster, Billie Matthews; grandchildren, Chelsi, Maddi, Colby Gibbons.

Lina Chism

YEMASSEE — Graveside service for Lina Lee Barefoot Chism, 90, formerly of Columbia, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Chism, wife of the late Arnold Chism, died Saturday, February 12, 2005. Born in Dunn, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Johnny B. and Callie Monds Barefoot. She was formerly employed with Shakespeare Corporation She was a member of Bayview Baptist Church and former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are son, Jerry Chism of Asheville, N.C.; daughter, Frances Carroll of Yemassee; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Elizabeth Bowers

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Elizabeth Catoe Bowers, 78, will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Randy Knight and Rev. Joe Stines will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 16, 2005, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association of SC, Memorials and Tributes, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058 or to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 950 Farris Road, Greenville, SC 20605-4277.

Mrs. Bowers, widow of Leo Ross Bowers, died Monday, February 14, 2005. Born in Kershaw County, she was the daughter of the late Sidney S. and Rena Dillon Catoe. She had retired from Hermitage Cotton Mill and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Ann Hough and Connie Ray, both of Camden, Mary Collins of Lugoff, and Faye Shaw of Rembert; brothers, Sidney Catoe, Jr., Thomas Catoe and Wayne Catoe, all of Lugoff, and Arthur Catoe of Camden; sisters, Lucille Moore and Linda Kronman, both of Lugoff, Lois Roberts of Camden, and Ruby Jackson of Bishopville; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by brother, Willie Clyde Catoe; sisters, Frances Rogers and Bobbie Jean Catoe.

Eloise Jones

COLUMBIA — Services for Eloise McCants Jones: noon Thursday at First Greenview Baptist Church. Burial: Memorial Gardens of Columbia, Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home in charge. Born in Blythewood to Frank & Francis McCants, she died Feb. 12, 2005. Surviving: husband, Rev. John Jones; children, Kenneth, Elisco and Karen Edgers, Mayo Jones, Stephanie Rembert; sister, Adlene Hardison; 16 grandchildren.

Pat Long

POMARIA — A. Pat Long, 85, of 3618 S.C. Highway 773, Pomaria, died Monday, February 14, 2005, in Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Long was born December 17, 1919, in Pomaria, a son of the late S. Chester and Beatrice Aull Long. He was an Army veteran of WW II and had retired as an employee of Newberry County Memorial Hospital. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and was a former member of the Congregational Council.

Mr. Long is survived by his wife, Cornelia Suber Long; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and John F. Boozer, III and Alice and Wayne Boozer, all of Pomaria; a sister, Eltryn L. Dunlap of Newberry and five grandsons, John, IV, Lee, Mark, Kevin, and Andrew Boozer. He was predeceased by a brother, George Long and a grandson, Patrick Boozer.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery

Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home and the family will be at the residence.

Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Building Fund, 2496 SC Highway 773, Pomaria, SC 29126.

Eugene Etheredge

SALUDA — Services with burial for Eugene Etheredge, 78, will be 2 p.m. today at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Butler & Sons Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Saluda County to Ned and Sallie Abney Etheredge, he died February 12, 2005. Surviving are his children, Lawrence and Larry Etheredge, Betty Ann Etheredge; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

Harry Corbett

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Harry O’Neil Corbett, 83, will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2005, at 4 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Jimmy Atkerson and Rev. William James will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 16, 2005, from 6-8 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church Senior Adult Fund, 1643 McRae Road, Camden, SC 29020.

Mr. Corbett died Monday, February 14, 2005. Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late Albert Alexander and Sudie Bell Corbett. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II in the South Pacific and Philippines. Mr. Corbett was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce Baker Corbett; children, Harry O. Corbett, Jr. of Lexington, Eleanor Biggs and her husband, Jon of Blythwood, and Brett T. Corbett and his wife, Cynthia, of Gilbert; grandchildren, Michael, Brett, Pressley, and Harrison; sister, Mary Singleton.

Anne Nevils

BLACKVILLE — Services for Anne Martin Nevils, 77, will be held four p.m. Wednesday, February 16, 2005, in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel, Williston, with burial in the Blackville Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Blackville Cemetery Fund or the Blackville First Baptist Church. Mrs. Nevils died on Monday.

Born in Denmark, she was a daughter of the late John Richard Martin, Jr. and Estelle Annie Toole Martin. She was married to the late Francis M. Nevils. Mrs. Nevils was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and retired as a school teacher, having taught for 31 years. She formerly served as president of the Blackville Cemetery Fund, member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #91, the Blackville Garden Club and Blackville First Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughter, Patricia Nevils “Patti” Horger of Orangeburg; son, Francis M. “Mell” Nevils, Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Katherine A. Nevils, Michael P. Horger, Jr., and Allison N. Horger.

Walter Black

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Walter Roland Black, 58, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Jones Metropolitan Funeral Home, West Columbia, with burial in Gibson Cemetery. Visitation is 1-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Born in Fairmont, W.Va., to Samuel Moore and Betty Black, he died February 13, 2005. Surviving are his wife, Eloise Black; grandchildren, Ronnie Keller and Charlene Ray.

Maxwell Malphrus

GARNETT — Maxwell Seabrook Malphrus, 76, died Monday, February 14, 2005, at his home in Garnett, S.C. He was born in Ridgeland, S.C., on January 27, 1928. He was the son of the late Seabrook Malphrus and Julia Evelyn Long Malphrus.

He was a bee keeper; formerly employed by Malphrus Construction; Westvaco and Holiday Wear Manufacturing Company. He was an avid outdoorsman and gardener, U.S. Army veteran, member Ridgeland Baptist Church and recently attended St. John’s United Methodist Church in Garnett, S.C.

He is survived by his wife, Annette Long Malphrus of Garnett, S.C.; two daughters, Mamie Malphrus of Charlotte, N.C., and Winnette Blanchard of Belton, S.C.; one brother, Kirk Malphrus of Ridgeland, S.C.; two sisters, Madilene Lewis of Savannah, GA, and JoAnn Daring of Ridgeland, S.C.; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, February 17, 2005, at the Great Swamp Baptist Church, Ridgeland, S.C., with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 til 8 Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be sent to the American Red Cross, Palmetto Chapter, 59 Sheridan Park Circle, Bluffton, SC 29910.

Sauls Funeral Home of Ridgeland, S.C., is assisting the family with their arrangements.
