Mitchell Hill

CATAWBA — A memorial service for Mitchell “Mitch” Hill, 43, employee of Hyatt Insulation, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at King's Funeral Home, Chester. Born in Chester County to Sammie Sr. and Lillian Gladden Hill, he died October 30, 2004. Surviving are wife Stephanie Watson Hill; mother; siblings, Sammie Jr., Roosevelt, John, Michael, Frances; aunts, Pearlean Brown, Eloise, Lillie Jackson.

Gerald Koon

LITTLE MOUNTAIN — Gerald David Koon, 62, of 303 Loop Road, Little Mountain, died Monday, November 1, 2004 at his residence.

Mr. Koon was born in Newberry County, a son of Earnestine McCartha Koon and the late John David Koon. He served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a life long member of St. Peter (Pineywood) Lutheran Church. Mr. Koon retired from the Department of Transportation, having worked 3 years in Georgia and 31 years in South Carolina.

Mr. Koon is survived by his mother; his wife, Linda Epting Koon, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte Lynn and Steven Ehney of Greenwood; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald David Koon, Jr. and Denise Koon of Little Mountain; a brother and sister-in-law, Barney R. and Joann Koon of Gaston; and three grandchildren, Jon-Drayton and Collin Ehney and Madelyn Koon.

Funeral services for Gerald David Koon will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at St Peter (Pineywood) Lutheran Church by the Rev. David Tholstrup. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry. The family will be at the residence, 303 Loop Road, Little Mountain.

Memorials may be made to World Hunger Appeal, c/o St. Peter Lutheran Church, 900 Dreher Island Road, Chapin, SC 29036 or The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 1247 Lake Murray Blvd. Irmo, SC 29063.

Whitaker Funeral Home, 1704 College Street, Newberry, is assisting the family.

Thelma Gripper

RIDGEWAY — Services with burial for Thelma Gripper, 82, will be held at noon today at Rock Hill Baptist Church. Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, Winnsboro, is in charge. Born in Fairfield County to Albert and Mary Peay Gripper, she died November 1, 2004. Surviving is her god son, Henry Qualls.

William Franklin

WEST COLUMBIA — A graveside service for Mr. William “Billy” Ray Franklin, 55, will be held at three o’clock Friday afternoon, November 5, 2004 at Olympia Cemetery. The family will receive friends from six until eight o’clock Thursday evening in Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Franklin died Friday, October 29, 2004. Born in Richland County, SC, he was a son of the late William H. and Hazel Eargle Franklin. He was a US Army veteran of Viet Nam. He had attended Midlands Technical College and was a graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.

Survivors include his daughter, Jennifer Denise Franklin; siblings and their spouses, Gary and Brenda Franklin, Barbara and Pete Huggins of Sandy Run, Susan Davis of Tennessee, and June E. and Christopher Laird of Pennsylvania .

Lillian Bentley

UNION — Graveside service for Lillian J. Bentley, 82, widow of William Bentley, 2:30 p.m. Thursday: Haney Cemetery; visitation 6:30-8 tonight: S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. Born in Union to Milton Sr. and Mattie Young Jolly, she died Nov. 1, 2004. She was a graduate of Union H.S., retired from Graham Cash Co. and belonged to Hebron Baptist Church. Surviving: siblings, Nell Crawford, Margaret Gregory, C.B. Jolly.

Maggie Williams

KINGSTREE — Mrs. Maggie Burgess Williams, 93, widow of Wade Williams, died Tuesday Nov. 2, 2004, in a Florence hospital.

Mrs. Williams was born December 27, 1910, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Craig and Conyers Evans Burgess. She was a graduate of Winthrop College, a member of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, and was retired after 40 years of teaching, having taught in various schools in North Carolina and Wingate College. She was a resident of Monroe, NC for most of her adult life and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Monroe, where she was presented with a life membership. After her retirement, she returned to Kingstree and was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.

Surviving is her sister, Miss Fan Burgess of the S.C. Presbyterian Home in Florence.

Funeral services will be 11 A.M. Thursday in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Midway Presbyterian Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Monroe, NC, Williamsburg Presbyterian Church in Kingstree, or the Presbyterian Home of SC in Florence.

William Williams Jr.

GREENWOOD — Services for William Elza “Bill” Williams Jr., 65, are 11 a.m. Thursday (viewing and visitation 10 a.m.) at Woodlawn Funeral Home, Greenville; burial in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Blyth Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Asheville, N.C., to William Sr. and Marie Williams, he died Nov. 1, 2004. Surviving: wife, Claudine Williams; mother; children, William Williams III, Lee Currington; more.

Ethel Creech

ORANGEBURG — Ethel Lucile West Creech, 93 died Tuesday. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, November 4, 2004 at Northside Baptist Church in Orangeburg with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg. Visitation is 6:00 to 8:00 PM tonight at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg. Memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church, 1250 Columbia Rd., Orangeburg, SC 29115.

J. Bernard Crooks Sr.

KINGSTREE — John Bernard Crooks Sr., 89, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Crooks was born Aug. 31, 1915 in the Cedar Swamp Community, a son of the late John B. and Hattie Parnell Crooks. He was a retired farmer and in 1960 was awarded the Farmer of the Year for Williamsburg Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Mae Pendergrass Crooks; a son, Kenneth L. Crooks Sr., a grandson, Daniel J. Benke III; a sister, Lydia C. Gleaton; a brother, W. Troy Crooks.

Surviving: daughter, Doris C. (Dan) Benke of Mt. Pleasant; sons, A. Carroll (Teresa) Crooks of Anderson, John B. (Marion) Crooks Jr., T. Wayne (Cynthia) Crooks and Clyde L. (Ingrid) Crooks, all of Kingstree; sisters; Marguerite C. (Bill) Scanion of Indianapolis, IN and Gene C. Bryant of Riverside, CA; 18 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 P.M. Friday in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Williamsburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kingstree First Free Will Baptist Church.

Joyce Willis

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Joyce Martha Collins Willis will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Friday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel, Newberry by the Rev. John Culp. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Willis, 79, widow of George Hubert Willis, died November 1, 2004. Born in Bethnal Green, England, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Edith Tuck Collins. She was a member of Mount Hebron United Methodist Church of West Columbia. Mrs. Willis lived through the bombing of London during World War II.

Surviving are a grandson and his wife, Roy Barry and Catherine Clouse of London, England and great-granddaughters, Tabitha Joyce Clouse and Daisy Sue Clouse both of London, England; guardian, Bertha A. Abell of Newberry and caregiver, Anna Ruth Dillard of Irmo. She was predeceased by her only son, Roy Barry Phillips-Willis, who passed away at the age of 21.

Russell Anderson

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Russell Leon Anderson, 29, of 2019 Oak Street, will be 1 p.m. Thursday (November 4, 2004) at Manigault-Hurley Funeral Home Chapel.

Visitation is 2-8:30 p.m. today (November 3, 2004) at the funeral home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Son of Martha Page Anderson and the late Robert Lee Davis, he was born in Columbia and died Friday, October 29, 2004 in Palmetto Baptist. He was an employee of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of South Carolina.

Surviving are his mother, one sister, Debra Ray, one brother, James Anderson, nieces, nephews and a host of loving relatives and friends.

Phyllis Moore

HOPKINS — A Homegoing Service with burial for Phyllis “Sister” Barber Moore is 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John Baptist Church, where she was a member. Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, Columbia, is in charge. Born in Columbia to McDaniel and Lizzie B. Edmond, she died Nov. 1, 2004. Surviving: son, Antonio Barber; siblings, Betty Jenkins, Preston, Elijah, Edward, Lucious, Ernest Barber, James Edmonds Sr.

Edwin Bradford

COLUMBIA — Edwin H. Bradford, age 88, died Tuesday, November 2, 2004 in Myrtle Beach.

Born September 26, 1916 in Sumter, he was the son of the late James and Harriett Powell Bradford. Mr. Bradford was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a former S.C. State Trooper in the First Official Class of Motorcycle Patrol and later retired from the IRS. Mr. Bradford was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Haithcock Bradford in 2003 and two sisters and three brothers.

Surviving are his daughter, Susan Bradford Mullins and husband Todd of Murrells Inlet, SC; granddaughter, Sandy Fusco and husband Matthew of Murrells Inlet, SC; great grandson, Andrew Fusco of Murrells Inlet and brothers, Richard and Jack Bradford.

Graveside services will be 2:00 PM, Thursday at Greenlawn Memorial Park directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Murrells Inlet, SC.
