James Rish

COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. James Ivery “J.I.” Rish, of 130 Tabor Drive, will be held noon Friday at St. Paul Baptist Church, Lexington, with burial in the church cemetery. Palmer Memorial Chapel is in charge.

Mr. Rish died Sunday, February 13, 2005. Born in Lexington, he was the son of the late Early, Jr. and Mozell Johnson Rish. He was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, served honorably in the US Air Force and retired from BellSouth.

Surviving are his wife, Janie Glymph Rish; sons, Dwight Summers, Kenny Young and Alstreater Rish; daughters, Carmen Rish, Adrienne Rish and Tonia Jones, stepson, James Glymph; brother, Zachary Dunlap; sister, Yvonne Dunlap and Althea Dunlap; grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Joyce Hartley

MONETTA — Joyce Evetta Hartley, 48, of Monetta, died Monday, February 14, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Mt. Ebal Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Bill Paulling officiating. Pallbearers will be Tony and Dale Shealy, Terry and Red Bedenbaugh, Greg Sides, Brian Boatwright, Carroll Stone and Tim Dunn. Honorary pallbearers will be Kathryn Miller, Kathy Smith, Sylvia Stone, Carolyn Long, Walter Smith, Ron Chitty, Michael Boatwright, Jeanette Sides and Angela Chitty.

Ms. Hartley was born in Columbia, S.C., to the late Curran and Evetta Caughman Hartley. She was a member of Mt. Ebal Baptist Church. She was previously employed as an office manager at Southland Sanitation.

Surviving are her brothers and sisters-in-law, Chevis and Darlene Hartley of Monetta; Ronald “Runt” Hartley of Monetta; nephew, Brent Hartley; nieces, Rhonda James and Kipp Palmer;

Memorial may be made to Mt. Ebal Baptist Church, c/o Building Fund, 4360 Wire Road, Batesburg, SC 29006. Family will be at the home of her brother, Ronald “Runt” Hartley in Monetta.

GREENWOOD — Services for Ellen Jerlene H. Strickland, 68, Magnolia Manor retiree, widow of John Strickland, 2 p.m. (visitation 1 p.m.) Saturday: Harley Funeral Home Memorials: Alzheimer’s Assoc. Born in Hartwell, Ga., to Roy Sr. and Beulah Craig Hall, she died Feb. 16, 2005. Surviving: children, Sandra Wilkerson, James Strickland; grandchildren; siblings, Mildred McGarity, Jean Salters, Roy Hall Jr.

Marion Latimer

NASHUA, N.H. — A memorial service for Marion Bartlett Latimer, 85, widower of DeWitt Latimer Jr., is 1 p.m. (visitation noon-1 p.m.) Saturday at Zis-Sweeney Funeral Home, burial in Edgewood Cemetery in the Spring. Born in Millinocket, Maine, to Joseph and Gladys Bartlett, she died Feb. 10, 2005. Surviving: children, DeWitt III, Joseph Latimer, Dianne Zalanskas; 4 siblings; 4 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Robert Byrd

LEXINGTON — Graveside services for Robert Wayne Byrd, 83, of Lexington, SC, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Crestwood Memorial Gardens, State Road, NC, officiated by Rev. Glenn Burchett. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, SC, is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to Christian Life Assembly Building Fund, 2700 Bush River Rd., Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Byrd died Wednesday, February 16, 2005. Born in Jonesville, NC, he was the son of the late Robert and Cora Shaffner Byrd. He had retired as a Senior Master Sergeant, USAF and as a Purchasing Agent, USN. Mr. Byrd was a member of Elkin, NC Lodge #454 and Orlando, FL York Rite.

Surviving are his wife, Lieselotte Strasser Byrd of Lexington, SC; daughters, Elisabeth Stalions of Lexington, SC, Sheila Kirkpatrick of Yorktown, VA; sister, Jean Royall of Elkin, NC; brothers, William Byrd and Quincy Byrd, both of Jonesville, NC; grandchildren, Kaylan Stalions and Justin Kirkpatrick.

Vivian Bignon

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Vivian H. Bignon, 88, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Serving as active pallbearers will be her nephews. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Carolina Children’s Home or Kilbourne Park Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bignon died Tuesday, February 15, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Birdy Lawrence Hutto and Ruth Swygert Hutto. She was a graduate of Columbia High School Class of 1933 and employed with the South Carolina State Board of Health for many years. She was a member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, Dorcas Gleaners Sunday School Class, WMU, and the Joy Group. She served as a volunteer at the Baptist Medical Center was a former member of the Green Thumb Garden Club and a member of the Carolina Jazz Society.

Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Bernard H. Bignon; son and daughter-in-law, Edward L. and Vicki Bignon of Irmo; sisters, Dorothy Wyatt, Barbara Dix, Carolyn Chabica and Faye Swygert, all of Columbia; a granddaughter, Jennifer Bignon of Charleston; a stepgrandson, Chris Jackson and his wife, Dawn of Charlotte, N.C.; and two stepgreat-granchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Francis H. “Bud” Hutto and a sister, Mary Hutto Shumpert.

Lucille Huff

HARLEYVILLE — Lucille I. Huff, 82, of Bend section of Harleyville, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005, in Trident Medical Center, Charleston. Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Lee officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with her grandsons as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday evening at Bryant Funeral Home, St. George.

Mrs. Huff was born November 18, 1922, in Harleyville a daughter of the late Willis and Frances Whetsell Infinger. She was a retired employee of Carolina Girls Wear and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Merrick Lee Huff and was predeceased by a son Walter E. Huff.

Surviving are four sons and their wives, Carl S. and Nicole Huff, Troy and Patricia Huff, all of Orangeburg, Willard and Anna Margaret Huff of Harleyville, David and Teresa Huff of Orange Park, FL; two daughters and their husbands, Margaret and Jack Moen of Flowery Branch, GA, Brenda and Lloyd Carter of Ridgeville; sisters, Gladys I. Cadden of Adams Run and Mary Grace Harbeson of Charleston; grandchildren, Natalie Huff, Pamela Herold, Tony (Wendy) Huff, Penny (Jimbo) Mims, Kim (Kerri) Huff, Christie (Casey) Wallace, Michael (Kristin) White, Sharon White, Sandy (Lynn) Hooker, Donna Huff, Lisa (Todd) Sloan, Ashley Huff, Curtis Huff, Chris (Katey) Huff, Kelly (Jeff) Boyd, Becky Huff, Mandy McGrail, Tracy (Duby) Moore, Karen (John) Phillips, Leslie Carter (Jason Williams), Merrick Huff, Amy Huff, Laura Huff; great-grandchildren, Brandon Carter, Jenna Phillips, Tristen Harvey, Lynsey Phillips, Gabriel Carter-Williams, Chelsea Mims, Jamie Mims, Ryan Huff, Elizabeth Huff, Payton Wallace, Dalton Wallace, Allison White, Kaitlyn White, Samantha Hooker, Katelyn Huff, Zachary Herold, Jeremy Huff, Aidan Huff, Even Boyd, Jordan Boyd, Thomas Boyd, Chase Phillips, Eric Moore.

Betty Appleby

FLORENCE — Betty L. Appleby, 79, died February 16, 2005, at the Methodist Manor in Florence, S.C., following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Mrs. Appleby was born Betty Jean Lundy September 30, 1925, in Springfield, S.C., the daughter of Elizabeth and Frank Lundy. She graduated from Denmark High School and earned her Bachelor of Music degree from Winthrop College. Following graduation, she completed the Summer Study program at The Julliard School of Music in New York City.

For over 50 years, Mrs. Appleby was a dedicated piano teacher. Her public school teaching experience was in the St. George, S.C., and Darlington, S.C., schools. She had a private piano studio briefly in Georgetown, S.C., followed by many years of teaching children and adults in Florence. She also served as the church organist for St. Paul Methodist Church in the 1960’s. She was a member of Christian Family Sunday School Class and Pearl Jones/Rosa Sanders Circle and former chairman of the Worship Committee at Central United Methodist Church. Her civic work included Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, volunteer accompanist at Royal Elementary School, Florence Lions Club Pianist and Meals on Wheels volunteer. She was a member of the Florence Music Teachers Association and the National Music Teachers Association.

Survivors include her husband of almost 55 years, Charles L. Appleby, Jr. of Florence; a son, Charles L. Appleby, III, and his wife Pam of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter, Jean Appleby Jackson of Fairfax, Virginia; three grandchildren, Charles L. Appleby, IV, of Columbia and Stephen D. Jackson, Jr. and William B. Jackson, both of Fairfax; a sister, Mildred Smoak of Denmark, S.C., and a brother, Frank Lundy of Columbia.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Friday, February 18, at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Florence with the burial service at 3:30 p.m. in St. George Cemetery, St. George, S.C.

Honorary pallbearers are the Golden K Kiwanis Club, Christian Family Sunday School Class and all employees of the Methodist Manor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Health Sciences Foundation, for Alzheimer’s Research, 18 Bee Street, Charleston, SC 29425.

MR. ED BAGWELL, 80, of Dunbarton Circle, beloved husband of Jewell Vaughn Bagwell, died Saturday, January 01, 2005 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 3, 2005 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home with The Rev.’s Robert Jackson and Jamie Rogers officiating. Interment will follow at 3:00 PM in Greenwood Memorial Park. A native of the Poplar Springs Community in Laurens County, Mr. Bagwell was a son of the late R. Broadus and Edith O’Dell Bagwell. He moved to Aiken in 1970 from Ware Shoals, SC, and retired after 43 years as a supervisor with Reigel Textiles. He had been a member of staff of Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home since 1997. Ed was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church and was a lifetime member of Brewerton Masonic Lodge 183 in Ware Shoals. Survivors, in addition to his wife of 57 years, include a son, Roger D. Bagwell, Greenwood, a daughter, Dianne B. Fortier, Bluffton, two brothers, Merrill Bagwell and Bobby Bagwell, both of Ware Shoals, six grandchildren, Tonya Thomason, Bengie Shirley, Michelle Shirley, John Tucker, Kevin Bagwell and Beth Boykin, he is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Ryne Tucker, Elisabeth Tucker, Peyton Boykin, Davis Shirley and Erin Thomason. He was preceded in death by his brother Wilton Bagwell. Memorials may be made to Good Hope Baptist Church, 2118 Silver Bluff Rd., Aiken, SC 29803. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Claire M. Ahrens 89, passed away February 6th at her residence on Hilton Head S. C. Mrs.Ahrens was the wife of the late Lester G. Ahrens. She is survived by three children, Leslie H. Ahrens, Barbara C. Ott, and Susan C Frillici and one brother Keith Fogel. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren.
Mrs. Ahrens was well noted for her many civic activities in Aiken County. She was woman of the year in 1957 for her participation as Chairman of the America Cancer Society, the development of the Aiken Youth Center, aid to needy persons and sponsoring entertainment for area servicemen.
Private graveside services will be held Saturday February 19th at Southlawn Cemetary at 1p.m.

Mr. Barrs was a carpenter and a member of University Parkway Church of God.
He is survived by his wife, Hope Elaine Leach Barrs; two sons, Nathan and Gabriel Barrs; his father, Jack Calhoun Barrs, Atlanta, GA; his mother, Sharron Tee Reaves Jackson, Yemassee, SC; a sister, Sharron Anne Meadows, Thompson, GA; his paternal grandmother, Doris Barrs, N. Augusta; a niece, Lea Browning, Augusta; two nephews, Mathew Browning, Augusta, and Joshua Atwell, Savannah.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Lynn Barrs.

Pallbearers will be Mathew Browning, Kevin Browning, Joshua Atwell, Mat Cook, Shawn Leach and Joey Barrs.
