Name : Dr. John Kusalavage
Birthplace : New York, NY
Last Resided In : Aiken, SC
Date of Birth : Saturday, February 19, 1949
Obituary Date : Saturday, January 22, 2005

John Joseph Kusalavage

John was born on February 19, 1949, in Queens, New York, to the late John and Eleanor Kusalavage. John was preceded in death by his younger brother, Edward Allen (Eddie).

John’s surviving family include:
Cousins in Mar-Lin, PA: Maggie Mentzer and her husband Val and their two sons Greg and Corey.
Cousins in Sacramento, CA: JoAnn Struebing, Ron Struebing and Ron’s daughter Ashley (currently living in Michigan).

Growing up in Flushing, New York, John was a very inquisitive child. And although at times his mischief may not have been well received by his parents or his friend’s parents, his curiosity was never-ending (according to his childhood friend, Vinnie). John had a true passion for knowledge - forever searching and always gaining more wisdom along the way.

Although John married and divorced, never having any children of his own, John truly loved children and he would have made a wonderful father.

While serving in the US Army during the Vietnam War (1970-1972), John studied linguistics, learning to speak Vietnamese and serve as an Interrogator.

John attended Fordham University of New York and he received his Degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of New York at Buffalo in 1978.

Dr. Kusalavage practiced medicine in Lake Charles, LA from 1978-2003.
While living in Lake Charles, John became close friends with Michael and May Kay Eason and their family, as well as many others in the community.

John was a very generous man with a HEART as BIG as his form, always wanting to help others. When John moved to South Carolina, he donated the majority of the books in his library to a youth organization. John was a very avid reader and he inspired many around him to enjoy reading as he did. John always enjoyed spending time at “Books-A-Million” and other local bookstores, reading and visiting with new friends.

In 1992 John attended a medical course (on surgery techniques) in Russia, at the Russian Scientific Research Center. John learned to love Russia while visiting there, and during a trip to St. Petersburg, John met Vika. John became very close friends with Vika and her family over the years thereafter. John encouraged and helped Vika to continue her education and attend a university in the United States. John learned to speak Russian and returned to Russia as often as possible, visiting Vika’s family while there.

Although John had no children of his own, he was like a father to many children in his life. He often did home tutoring with children of his close friends. John also offered his editing skills to aspiring writers on the internet.

In 2003, John retired from his medical practice and moved to Aiken, South Carolina to be close to his lifelong dear friends, Vincent and Janet Mansfield.

John’s passing has left a huge void in the lives of his close friends and family, although, the love for John will never end. John will be missed greatly by family and friends.
