Benny Hall

BISHOPVILLE — Benny Welborn Hall, 72, husband of Gail West Hall, died Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at his home.

Born in Lucknow, he was a son of the late Elisha A. Hall and the late Lois Blackwell Hall.

Mr. Hall was a member of Concord Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Lucknow Masonic Lodge #212. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and a member of the USC Alumni Association. He retired as a purchasing agent for International Paper Co. after 37 years of service. He was also a US Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Ben W. Hall, Jr. of Bishopville and Kevin F. Horton of Bethune; two daughters, Deborah H. Davis and her husband, David of Bethune, and Julie D. Horton of Columbia; a sister, Sarah McCoy of Fort Myers, FL; a brother, E.A. Hall, Jr. of Huntsville, TN; and four grandchildren, Kyle Davis, Ellen Horton, Savannah Horton, and Ryan Hall.

Graveside services will be held at 3 P.M. Thursday in the Concord Methodist Church Cemetery near Lucknow with Rev. Larry Brown officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Curtis Watkins, Terry Hancock, Harold Whitley, Doby Gordon, Kershaw Graham, and Clarence Tisdale.

The family will receive friends at the home, 5020 Old Georgetown Rd., in the Lucknow community.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Rd., Sumter, S.C. 29150, Concord Methodist Church, c/o Deborah Gardner, 5255 Old Georgetown Rd., Bishopville, S.C. 29010, or to Bethel Methodist Church, 103 King St., Bethune, S.C. 29009.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

Leo Barr

COLUMBIA — Services for Leo P. Barr are 2 p.m. Friday (viewing 1-6 today) at Greater Columbia Funeral Service with burial in Brown Chapel AME Cemetery. Born to Jake and Maybelle Barr, he is survived by wife, Mary Barr; children, Verdell, Kevin, Karl, Timothy, Falesha, Brenda, Dorothy, Julie Barber, Sherentha Carpenter; other relatives and friends. He retired as a truck driver with Allied Van Line Agents.

Oscar Naudin

COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Oscar Monroe Naudin, of 2201 College St., will be held 11:00 am Friday at Palmer Memorial Chapel. Visitation is 6:00 pm today at Palmer Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Naudin died Monday, November 1, 2004. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Edward J. and Nancy Boozer Naudin. He received a B.S. Degree from Benedict College, served in the US Army and retired after 30 years from the US Postal Service.

Surviving are a brother, Richard Naudin; son, Terry (Mona) McDaniel; and two grandchildren.

Nelson Garner

CLINTON — Services for Nelson L. Garner, 85, widower of Ruth Saylors Garner, are 3:30 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church with burial in Pinelawn Memory Gardens. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Gray Funeral Home. Born in Franklin Co., Ga., to Norman and Erastus Hicks Garner, he died Nov. 3, 2004. Surviving are children, Ann Parkman, Kay Tinsley, Joyce Cordell; sister, Sara Bartlett; 6 grands; 6 great-grandchildren.

Vernelle Colson

WALTERBORO — Services for Vernelle Nettles Colson, 82, widow of Lonnie Colson, 11 a.m. Friday at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; burial in Bedon Baptist Churchyard; visitation 6-8 tonight at Brice Herndon & Sons Funeral Home. Born in Colleton Co. to George and Corrie Nettles, she died Nov. 3, 2004. Surviving: children, Nell Benton, Lonnie Colson, Lisa Gregorich; sister, Urell Morgan; grandchildren.

Rebecca Williams

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Services in S.C. for Rebecca “Mable” Williams, 60, are 2 p.m. Friday (viewing 1 p.m.) at St. Paul Baptist Church, Orangeburg; burial in Heavenly Rest Memorial Park, Cordova. Glover’s Funeral Home, Orangeburg, is in charge. Born in Orangeburg to Lacell and Louise B. Williams, she died Oct. 28, 2004. Surviving are children, Shawn Williams, Acquilla Kun; parents; 2 sisters; 2 adopted brothers; others.

Frances Utsey

ROCK HILL — Frances Pender Utsey, 83, died Tuesday.

Funeral is 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 5, 2004 at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg with burial at Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg.

Visitation is 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.

Albert Paulin Jr.

ORANGEBURG — A memorial service for Albert “Joe” Paulin Jr., 81, is 11 a.m. Friday at Glover’s Funeral Home. Born in Orangeburg to Albert Sr. and Victoria Paulin, he is survived by his ex-wife, Henrietta Gamble; children, Grace Hooper, Alvin, Vincent, Ronald Paulin; grandchildren; great-grandchildren. He graduated from Wilkinson High School, served in the U.S.A.F., and attended the Church of God.

Pauline Helmly

MARYLAND — Services for Pauline Boozer Helmly, 95, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 5, 2004 at St. Thomas Lutheran Church with interment to follow in Rosemont Cemetery, Newberry. Mrs. Helmly will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, November 4, 2004 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 215 St. Thomas Rd., Chapin, SC 29036.

Mrs. Helmly of Severn, MD, formerly of Chapin, SC, died Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at Genesis ElderCare in Severna Park. She was the widow of Rev. Cecil D. Helmly whom she married in 1934. Pastor Helmly died in 1998. Born February 8, 1909 in Prosperity, SC, she was the daughter of the late Eldridge S. and Maggie Crooks Boozer of Newberry, SC. She was a member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church. She was a 1931 graduate of Newberry College, and taught in public schools in Alabama and South Carolina for twenty-four years. She retired in 1974.

She is survived by her daughter, Cecilia D. Jenkins of Severn, MD; two grandchildren, Shayne R. Jenkins of Panama City, FL and Kerry D. Jenkins of Newport, NC; six great-grandchildren; one niece, Brenda Boozer Black of Columbia, SC; sisters, Helen Repasky of Struthers, OH, Sophie Harris of Duncan, SC, Lucy Cochcroft of Gastonia, NC, and Doreen Ragsdale of Greenville, SC; and a numerous of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-great-nieces.

Rachel Morris

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Rachel Ann Morris, 70, of West Columbia, will be held at 2pm Friday, November 5, 2004 in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Rev. Bill Porter and Rev. Pete Mixon. Burial will follow at Celestial Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, 1400 Pickens St., Columbia, SC 29201 or to Grace Cathedral, 8017 Winnsboro Rd., Blythewood, SC 29016.

Mrs. Morris entered her glory on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at home surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born in Pelzer, SC, she was the daughter of the late Lindsay Oscar and Mildred Garrett Smith of Winnsboro and the widow of the late Willie M. Morris of West Columbia. Mrs. Morris was retired from Rich Plan where she was employed as a bookkeeper for 30 plus years. She was a member of Grace Cathedral in Blythewood.

Rachel was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She will always be remembered for her positive outlook, deep faith, sweet spirit, and generosity. Her love for the Lord was undying and ever present in all her actions and words.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Mark Fairleigh of West Columbia; granddaughter and her husband, Heather and Chuck Guingona of North Charleston; step-son, Marty Morris of Louisiana; sister and brother-in-law, Gail and David Clapp of Durham, NC; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Ann Smith of West Columbia, Jerry and Sarah Smith of Matthews, NC; as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Palmetto Health Hospice and Dr. Leland McElveen and staff at SC Oncology Associates for their generous care.

Helen Grigsby

COLUMBIA — Services for Helen Moore Grigsby, 79, of Columbia, will be held at 11am Friday in Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. W. Robert Borom. Burial will follow at Celestial Memorial Gardens. The casket will be placed in the church at 10am prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Thursday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church or to the charity of one’s choice.

Mrs. Grigsby, widow of Marion H. Grigsby, died Wednesday, November 03, 2004. Born in Great Falls, SC, she was the daughter of the late John B. and Jennie Smith Moore. Mrs. Grigsby was a member of Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church and was retired from W&G Bookkeeping and Tax Service. She was a former member of Eastern Star Chapter 271 and the Rebekah Lodge. She kept her love for her childhood church, Bethesda United Methodist Church in Great Falls, SC.

Mrs. Grigsby was the last member of her immediate family however, she had many devoted friends and her “Cobia” children and a very special Mary Sloan.

John Young Jr.

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Mr. John Keoni Young Jr., 72, of Columbia, will be held 2 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2004 at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel with Robert A. Williams officiating. Full military rites and interment to follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or Southern Care Hospice. Condolences may be sent to www.mem.com. Greenlawn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Young died Monday, November 1, 2004. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was the son of the late John Young and Lucy K. Nahina. Mr. Young retired from the U.S. Army after 24 years of dedicated service in which he served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Mr. Young was predeceased by a son, John Puwahi Young.

Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Agnes P. Young of the home; daughters, Nina Williams and her husband, David, and Linda Young-Baggott and her husband, Todd, all of Columbia, SC, Doreen Putnal and her husband, Charles, of Blythewood, SC, Diana Nichols and her husband, Joel, Cherylann Samide, Muriel Young and Christina Miller, all of Elgin, SC; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren.

Donald Woodburn

COLUMBIA — Services for Donald George Woodburn, 53, will be held at noon Friday at A.A. Dicks Funeral Home-Sullivan Chapel with burial in Florence National Cemetery. Surviving are children, Ricky Deming, Duane Woodburn, Felix Jeter, Autivia Sharp; siblings, Carl Standback, Herman Woodburne Jr., Navelette Woodburne-Burton, Wilma Nathan; grandchildren.

Katherine Wilkinson

SUMTER — Services for Katherine DuBose Wilkinson, widow of Harry Wilkinson Jr., 3 p.m. Saturday in Oconee Hill Cemetery, Athens, Ga. Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge. Born in Athens to Bolling and Minnie Thomas DuBose, she died Nov. 3, 2004. Surviving are daughters, Janet Purvis, Harriet Payne, Margaret Hutchens; sister, Janet Barnett; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.
