Fay Bush

HAMPTON — Services for Fay Croft Bush, 60, will be held eleven a.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at the Hampton First Christian Church with burial in the Blackville Cemetery. The family will be at the home of her son Hal Bush, Sharon Church Road, Gaston and will receive friends from six to eight p.m. Tuesday at Folk Funeral Home, Williston. Mrs. Bush died Friday. Born in Blackville, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Easter Louise Jowers Croft. She was a homemaker and member of the Hampton First Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, James Crosland Bush, Sr.; daughter, Pamala Faye Bush of Gaston; sons and daughter-in-law, James C. and Linda Bush, Jr. of Mansfield Center, Conn., and William H. Bush of Gaston; sister, Mrs. Joe (Lavonne) Guild of Columbia; brother, Kenneth H. Croft of Orangeburg; grandchildren, Caleb Bush, Nikki Bush and Brian Fogarty.

Alma Caughman

LEESVILLE — Services for Alma Rauch Caughman, 92, will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday from Cedar Grove Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gary Bradenburg and Rev. Kathleen Panning officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Kyle, Eric, Josh, Doug, Ervin Caughman, Chris Fulmer, Larry Rauch, Harold Taylor. Memorials may be made to Cedar Grove Lutheran Church Building Fund, 1220 Cedar Grove Road, Leesville, SC 29070 or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 6604, Columbia, SC 29260. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Historic B-L Chapel.

Mrs. Caughman died Monday, February 28, 2005. Born in Lexington County, a daughter of the late Willie Ernest and Corrie Isabel Amick Rauch, she was a member of Cedar Grove Lutheran Church, the WELCA, the 50 plus Club and was a homemaker.

Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Brenda Caughman of Lexington, Milton and Sue Caughman of Leesville; brothers, Tallie and Talmadge Rauch of Gilbert, Callie Rauch of Leesville, Jacob Rauch of Columbia; sisters, Corrie Mae McCartha, Virginia Harmon of Lexington, Elsie McCartha of Vero Beach, FL; grandchildren, Daphne (Chris) Fulmer of Ballentine, Eric Caughman of Cayce, John (Ashley), Kyle (Lynn) Caughman of West Columbia, Megan Caughman of Lexington; great-grandchildren, Trevor and Baylee Fulmer, Brandon and Gracyn Caughman.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Edwin Caughman; a brother, L. Clyde Rauch; a sister, Janie Ethelee Rauch.

Evelyn Hilton

CAMDEN — Graveside services for Evelyn Umphlett Hilton, 87, of Camden will be held Thursday, February 3rd, at 2 p.m. in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Rev. Bruce Hancock will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Arise and Building Fund, 1201 Broad St. Camden, SC 29020.

Mrs. Hilton died Monday, February 28, 2005. Born in Eure, N.C., she was the daughter of the late James T. and Ruth Sawyer Umphlett. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she taught a Sunday School class and sang in the choir. Mrs. Hilton was a member of Leslie Zemp Chapter #111 and a member of The Order of The Eastern Star where she was awarded a Lifetime Membership and a 50 Year Pin. She was a volunteer with Kershaw County Medical Center and served over 2000 hours. She retired from Kershaw County Health Department where she worked as a Home Health Nurse.

Surviving are daughter, Gloria Whitley of Columbia, son, Bishop Randy Hilton of Newport News, Va., 5 grandchildren, a sister, Ruth Broughton of Portsmouth, Va.

Eva Ashton

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Mrs. Eva Irene Ashton, 91, of Columbia, will be held 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, March 2, 2005, at Columbia Northeast Christian Church. Officiating will be the Reverend Gary Cheek. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock this (Tuesday) evening at Shives Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ashton, widow of Reverend D.G. Ashton, died Sunday, February 27, 2005. Born in Rutland, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Callie Brooks Archer.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Ross and husband Bill of Columbia; brother, Frank Archer of Columbus, Ohio, and a number of nieces and nephews. A special thank you to the staff of Magnolia Manor for their loving care.

Mary Cleveland

COLUMBIA — Mary Wilton Earle Cleveland, widow of James Harvey Cleveland, Jr., died Monday, February 28, 2005, in the S.C. Episcopal Home at Still Hopes, where she was a resident. Born on September 1, 1919, she lived most of her life in Greenville and Easley, S.C.

Mrs. Cleveland was the daughter of the late Colonel Joseph Haynsworth Earle and Virginia Conway Wheeler Earle of Greenville. She graduated from Greenville High School, attended Furman and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1939. She was a teacher in the public schools of Greenville and Easley and was a member of Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church, Easley, the Greenville committee of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of South Carolina, the Junior League of Greenville, the Easley Garden Club, the Better Homes Club of Easley and several bridge clubs.

She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Cleveland Walker and son-in-law, Bryan Lawrence Walker, MD, of Columbia; her sons, James Harvey Cleveland III and daughter-in-law, Jayne Asman Cleveland of Greenville and John Baker Cleveland II and daughter-in-law, Julie Adams Cleveland of Easley. Surviving grandchildren include Bryan Lawrence Walker, Jr., Harvey Cleveland Walker, Elizabeth Winters Cleveland, James Harvey Cleveland IV, John Baker Cleveland III, and Virginia Anne Cleveland. The grandchildren will serve as pallbearers along with Mrs. Cleveland’s nephews, Joseph Haynsworth Earle IV of Atlanta, GA, and William Choice Earle of Columbia. Other survivors include her sister-in-law, Elizabeth MacDonald Cleveland of Cleveland, SC, her niece, Elizabeth Cherry Livingston Snell of Columbia and her nephew, Thomas Livingston of New Bern, NC. She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Haynsworth Earle of Greenville, SC.

Services will be held at Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church in Easley on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at 12 Noon. Private burial services in the Cleveland family cemetery will precede the church services. The family will receive friends and family following the church services at the home of John Cleveland, 203 Grigsby Avenue in Easley. Memorials may be made to Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church, 1200 Powdersville Road, Easley SC 29642 or to the SC Episcopal Home at Still Hopes, One Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia, SC 29071. Robinson Funeral Home of Easley is assisting the family.

Maggie Crim

NORTH — Mrs. Maggie Lou Fogle Crim, age 99, died Monday, February 28, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at First Baptist Church of North with Rev. Larry Shull officiating. Burial will be in Pen Branch Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Troy Widner, Royce McLester, Bill Swick, Lee Laird, Duane Fogle, Derrick Fogle, Randy McKissick and Benj Driggers.

Mrs. Crim was born in North, a daughter of the late Joe W. and Olivia Tindall Fogle. Mrs. Crim was a pianist at Hopewell Southern Methodist Church for 13 years beginning at the age of 15 and a former Sunday school teacher. She was a member of First Baptist Church of North and was married to the late Leroy A. Crim, Sr.

Survivors include daughters: Mary Edith Crim of North and Betty Jean Crim Baughman of St. Matthews; sons: L.A. Crim, Jr. of Swansea, Samuel Paxton Crim and George Thomas Crim both of North; sisters: Mrs. Hansee Fogle Shuler of Cameron, Mrs. Maxine Fogle McKissick and Mrs. Nell Fogle Argoe both of Columbia; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Derrell Joseph Crim.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home and other times at the home, 612 Bedford Avenue.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of North.

Mary Thomas

LAKE CITY — Services for Mary Nell Thomas, 33, 11 a.m. Wednesday at Green’s Funeral Home. Burial: Poston Cemetery. Born in Newark, N.J., to Mattie Thomas and Albert Brown, she died Feb. 26, 2005. Surviving: mother; daughter, Matia; sister, Yvette Thomas; nephew, Antoine Graham; nieces, Deneshia Graham, Days Gamble; aunts, Nancy, Marilyn Thomas; uncles, Nathaniel Jr., Alfonza Thomas.

Larry Curvin Sr.

COLUMBIA — Funeral Services for Mr. Larry Phillip Curvin, Sr., 55, of Columbia, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Rosewood Baptist Church, with Rev. Louie McDonald officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at Greenlawn Funeral Home Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Condolences may be sent to www.mem.com. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home for the arrangements.

Mr. Curvin died Sunday, February 27, 2005. Born on July 14, 1949, in Saucier, Mississippi, he was the son of the late Joseph E. Curvin and Lou Stephenson. He had been a resident of Columbia for the past 49 years and was employed with United Rentals. Mr. Curvin was a member of the White Circle Hunt Club in Bamberg and Rosewood Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, and was a Nascar fan.

Surviving are his wife, Nora Elliott Curvin of Columbia; his mother, Lou Curvin Taylor of Columbia; a daughter, Whitney Morris and her fiance, Jonathan Rice of Myrtle Beach, SC; a son, Larry P. Curvin, Jr. and his fiancee, Melissa Fuggle of Columbia; two brothers, Roger S. Curvin and James L. Curvin both of Columbia; nieces and nephews, Jason T. Curvin and wife Laura, Jamie Curvin, and Jessica Curvin.

Maxine Starnes

WAGENER — Services for Maxine Sturkie Starnes, 86, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Berlin Baptist Church with interment to follow in Wagener cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Mid-State Chapter, PO Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202-7044.

Mrs. Starnes widow of Harley V. Starnes died Monday, February 28, 2005. Born in Lexington County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Irvin and Sara (Sadie) Sturkie. She was a member of Berlin Baptist Church. She was employed with Wagener Manufacturer and owned and operated Starnes Grocery with her late husband.

She is survived by her daughters, Harlene R. Starnes of Perry, S.C., Nancy S. Bolin of Aiken, S.C., Joyce S. Essick (John) of West Columbia, S.C.; son, Arthur I. Starnes of Columbia, S.C.; grandchildren, Amanda and Andy Bolin of Aiken, S.C., Shannon E. Smith and Cory Essick of West Columbia, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Megan, Melanie and Meredith Smith of West Columbia, S.C., Todd L. Bolin and Becca Bolin of Aiken, S.C., and Olivia Essick of West Columbia.

Special thanks to her care givers, Marjorie Patterson, Evetta Weaver, Michelle Lybrand, Frances Gable and the late Shirley Pough.

Archie Smith

SWANSEA — Services for J. Archie Smith, 61, of Swansea, will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Swansea First Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Terry Wilder. Burial will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Gaston. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Jordan Smith Educational Fund c/o Carolina First Bank.

Mr. Smith died Sunday, February 27, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was the son of Lottie Hutto Smith and the late Alvin Smith. He was employed with Richardson Construction Company.

Surviving, in addition to his mother of Swansea, are his wife, Shirley Fulmer Smith of Swansea; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Tabitha Smith of Swansea; sister, Dorothy Jean Harsey of Cayce; brothers, Larry K. Smith and Charles A. Smith, both of Swansea; and grandson, Jordan Smith. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Leigh Smith and his sister, Jackie Shealy.
