Glenn McElveen

LYNCHBURG — Mr. Glenn Oneil McElveen, age 74, died Monday, April 4, 2005, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2005, at Shiloh United Methodist Church with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) at the funeral home.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Robert Franklin McElveen and Sallie Janie McElveen McElveen. Mr. McElveen was employed for 45 years by Utilities Construction Company, Inc. as a Supervisor. He was a graduate of Sherwood School, a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, where he served as Superintendent of the church for 16 years, a member of the church choir, a member of the United Methodist Men’s Sunday School Class and a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery Committee.

Mr. McElveen was preceded in death by four sisters, Dorothy Nell Collins, Inez Dennis, Mozelle Tomlinson and Erlene Hodge; one brother, Robert McElveen, Jr.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Bernice Prevatte McElveen of Lynchburg; one daughter, Pat McElveen (Leo) Furlong of Cornelius, North Carolina; three sons, Dennis (Nancy) McElveen, Mitch (Patti) McElveen and Gregg McElveen, all of Lynchburg; one sister, Junelle Spires of Sumter; seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, 895 Pleasant Grove Road, Lynchburg, South Carolina 29080.

Rev. Clarke Redmond

BEDFORD, Pa. — Services for Rev. Clarke J. Redmond, 81, are 11 a.m. Saturday (visitation 10:30) at Louis Geisel Funeral Home. Burial in Redmond Cemetery, Swansea, S.C. Visitation 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Born in Swansea to Daniel and Lynnie Redmond, he died March 31, 2005. Surviving: children, Garth, Harry, James Redmond, Janet Krepps; sisters, Edith Garthoff of Johnstown, Katie Adkins and Gaynelle Jumper of Swansea.

Henrietta Wechsler

BEAUFORT — Henrietta Nyholt Wechsler, 82, beloved wife of the late Kenneth Wechsler, of Beaufort and also of Greenfield, Massachusetts, died Monday, April 4, 2005, at her Beaufort residence.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Copeland Funeral Home. Interment will be private, with her husband at Beaufort National Cemetery.

Mrs. Wechsler was born June 23, 1922, in Arvada, Colorado, a daughter of Jantje Kuiper Nyholt and Keimpe Nyholt.

She was a graduate of Colorado State College of Education and taught elementary school before becoming a homemaker. In 1955, she moved with her family to Hampton, South Carolina, where she resided for 36 years. She enjoyed gardening, home decorating, reading, sewing, furniture refinishing and repair, and making all sorts of things. She had an eye for converting discarded objects into usable items and imaginative works of art. She was an amateur artist in watercolor and wood assemblage. She won local and state awards for her creations.

She was the devoted mother of Harry Weschler and his wife, Lisa Tuten Weshcler of Beaufort and Jan Gee Bean and her husband, John Bean of Greenfield, Massachusetts; a loving sister to Fred Nyholt of Brighton, Colorado and Hilda Bellotto of Mahopac, New York and a cherished grandmother to Henken and Hallie Bean and Maura and Stefan Wechsler.

Memorial contributions may be made to National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St, Suite 1100, NY, NY 10016 or Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104.

Florence W. Adkins

WEST COLUMBIA — Florence W. Adkins, 94, of West Columbia, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005.

Graveside funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, April 6, 2005, in Westside Baptist Cemetery with Pastor Eric Friedricks officiating.

Mrs. Adkins was born in Vanderburgh County, IN, a daughter of the late George and Anna Wykoff. She was married to the late J.W. “Cap” Adkins. She was a retired licensed practical nurse. She was a member of Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church. She was the last member of her immediate family.

Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North is in charge of arrangements.

Tony Keith Shull

WEST COLUMBIA — Memorial services for Tony Keith Shull, 51, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2005, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church or American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Columbia, SC 29201.

Mr. Shull died Monday, April 4, 2005. Born May 13, 1953, in Lexington County, S.C., he was the son of Geneva Sharpe Shull and the late Gary O. Shull. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his mother of West Columbia; sisters, JoAnn Derrick of Gilbert, Barbara Stamm of West Columbia, Geneva Waltz of West Columbia; brothers, Ronald Shull, Phillip Shull, Jamie Shull, Lynn Shull, and Eric Shull all of West Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Dale Shull.

A special thank you to Dr. Delphia with S.C. Heart Center for all the years of care.

Roger Bednarick

COLUMBIA — Mr. Roger Andrews Bednarick, 64, of Columbia, died Monday, April 4, 2005. Born in Franklin (South Hampton County), VA, he was a son of the late Frank and Leita Coleman Bednarick. He was President of his Senior Class at Princess Anne High School, Virginia Beach, VA, and then he attended Elon College. Mr. Bednarick was employed by J.P. Stevens Company in New York City for over 20 years, retiring in 1995. He was President of the Summit Town Homeowners Association in Columbia and Pine Trace in Sarasota, FL.

Survivors include his life partner, Errol Croft of Columbia; son, Roger A. “Chip” Bednarick, Jr. and wife Susan of Mooresville, NC; sister, Sandra Moraski and her husband, Walter; and brother, Frank Bednarick all of Blackstone, VA; two grandchildren, Alexis and Haley; nephew and niece, Richard Moraski and LaDonna Pierson.

Memorials may be made to the LifePath Hospice, Palliative Care, 1647 Sun City Center Plaza, Sun City Center, FL 33573. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Maxine Ray

COLUMBIA — Private memorial services for Mrs. Maxine Ray, 83, of Columbia, will be held at a later date. Born in Winston-Salem, N.C., to the late William S. Luck and Elva Baity Luck, she died Monday, April 4, 2005. Surviving are her son, Harvey Linwood (Angela) Ray of Gaston; sisters, Marie Hockett and Mildred Whitecell; brother, William Luck Jr.; three grandchildren.

Robert A. Bruce Jr.

CAMDEN — Robert A. Bruce, Jr., 59, of Camden, died Monday, April 4, 2005, at his home at Mulberry Plantation in Camden. Mr. Bruce married Lesley Withenbury on May 1, 1971, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Surviving him are his wife; daughters, Carson of Beaufort and Katie of Georgetown; sister, Betsy Etters and family of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister-in-law, Ginger Goodale, brother-in-law, Bill Goodale, and their family, all of Camden; brother-in-law, Thomas Withenbury and family of Monmouth, Ill.; and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, W.B. Etters.

Born in Camden, a son of the late Robert A., Sr. and Elizabeth Cureton Bruce. He was raised and educated in Camden, and graduated from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. He served a tour of duty with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Mr. Bruce served as the general manager of Mulberry Plantation in Camden for 30 years, and was a devoted member and former deacon of Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden. His love of golf kept him involved in South Carolina Junior Golf Association, and as a member of the Carolinas Golf Association. He was also a long-time member of the Camden Country Club.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 2005, in Quaker Cemetery in Camden with Reverend William “Chip” Summers of Bethesda Presbyterian Church officiating. Memorials may be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 DeKalb Street, Camden, SC 29020, or the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter, 460 Fair Street, Camden, SC 29020. Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Margie Tyner

COLUMBIA — Final commendation and farewell prayers for Margie Carolyn Tyner, 72, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2005, in Magnolia Cemetery, Hartsville, SC, Father Karl Roesch, Celebrant. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Ms. Tyner died Monday, April 4, 2005. Born in Darlington County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Keith M. and Dollie Nicholson Tyner. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. She was a past state president of the VFW Auxiliary and held several national VFW Auxiliary offices. She retired from the U.S. Government, serving most of her time at Fort Jackson as an accountant. She spent her retirement years as a loving sister, aunt, and great aunt.

Surviving are her sisters, Mary Tyner Marivittori of Columbia, SC, Alice Tyner Benge of Lexington, SC; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Keith Tyner, and her sister, Frances Tyner Edwards.

William P. Dent

ST. MATTHEWS — William Prickett Dent, of 206 Carlisle Ave., age 83, died Monday afternoon, April 4, 2005, at Tucker Nursing Home, Columbia. Time and date of service: 12 noon Wednesday, April 6th. Place of service: Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Michael Polewczak and Pastor Duane Houston officiating. Place of burial: West End Cemetery. Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge. Mr. Dent was born in St. Matthews, a son of the late Hampton Nathaniel and Sallie Prickett Dent. He was a graduate of St. Matthews High School and Presbyterian College. He was a retired insurance agent. Mr. Dent served many years as an agent for Farm Bureau Insurance Company. He was co-founder of Prickett and Dent Oil Company. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Mr. Dent was a retired Lt. Col., serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in WWII and served 25 years as a pilot in the South Carolina National Guard. He was predeceased by brothers, H.N. (Fritz) Dent, Jr., R.C. (Jack) Dent, C.R. (Bobby) Dent and great-granddaughter, Eden Renee Dent.

Survivors: wife: Mary Ethel Guidry Dent of the home; 6 children: Dianne D. Hughes and husband Jimmy, St. Matthews, W.P. (B.J.) Dent, Jr. and wife Dab, St. Matthews, Mollie Dent, Irmo, Woody Dent and wife Jeannette, St. Matthews, Leonard (Bitsey) Dent and wife Destiny, St. Matthews, Patrick H. Dent and wife Holly, Sandston, VA; brother: Harry S. Dent, Columbia; 29 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to American Legion Post 12 c/o Charles Bell, 502 Hammond Cross Road, St. Matthews, SC 29135.

Friends may call at the residence.
