NEWBERRY — Services for Tommie C. Williams, 63, 4 p.m. Sunday at Kingdom Hall, burial in Scurry Springs Church Cemetery, Chappells, visitation 6 tonight at Wilson Funeral Home. Born in Newberry Co. to Sam and Julia Williams, he died April 12, 2005. Surviving: wife, Mary; sisters, Nora, Katie, Mary, Gracie, Jonell, Doris, Novella; 5 stepchildren; stepgrandchildren; stepgreat-grandchildren; stepmother; other relatives.

Edward Neese

SWANSEA — Edward Neese, 80, of Swansea, died Thursday, April 14, 2005.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005, in Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. H.B. Jeffcoat officiating.

Mr. Neese was born in Lexington County, a son of the late Raymond L. and Beulah Mae Jumper Neese.

Survivors include a brother, Billy Neese of Swansea; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, T.B. Neese; and a sister, Avalee Fairrington.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North.

Memorials may be made to the Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

Thomas Lackland III

CAYCE — Services for Thomas Cobbs Lackland, III, 79, of Cayce, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2005, in Transfiguration Lutheran Church, officiated by Rev. Lavaughn Keisler. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m.

Friday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Memorials may be made to Transfiguration Lutheran Church, the American Heart Association or to the Kidney Foundation.

Mr. Lackland died Thursday, April 14, 2005. Born in Atlanta, GA, he was a son of the late Thomas C. and Margaret Saville Lackland, Jr. A graduate of USC, Mr. Lackland was owner and retired pharmacist of Parkland Pharmacy. He was a member of the Gamecock Club, the Palmetto Retriever Club of which he was the founder, and Transfiguration Lutheran Church. He also served as an officer in the Navy.

Surviving are his daughters, Marie Mullender (Jake) of Cayce, Donna Glover (Ricky) of Lexington; son, Daniel Lackland (Ilene) of Mt. Pleasant; sister, Lillian Sullivan of Albany, GA; brother, William Lackland of West Columbia; grandchildren, Amanda Lackland, Thomas Lackland, IV, Catherine Glover, James Glover and Jacob Mullender.

Mr. Lackland was predeceased by his wife of fifty years, Addie R. Lackland.

Gussie Mae Taylor

COLUMBIA — A memorial service for Gussie Mae Taylor will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home. Born in Columbus, Ga., to Willie and Gussie P. Bussey McCray, she died April 14, 2005. Surviving are her son, Edward McCray; daughter, Leslie Council; siblings, Rozetta Rodriguez, Willie Jr., John and Jessie McCray; three granddaughters.

Amelia Crawford Saye Simpson

RODMAN — Amelia Crawford Saye Simpson, widow of Harper Gaston Simpson, resident of Rodman, SC, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, in Rock Hill, SC, at the home of her son, Joseph S. Simpson, and his wife, Ann, who cared for her for several years during her declining health.

She was born September 3, 1909, at “Oakley Hall” in the Fishing Creek Community of Chester, SC. Mrs. Simpson was the youngest of six children born to James McJunkin Saye and Augusta McFadden Saye. She was the granddaughter of Rev. James Hodge Saye and Rebecca McJunkin Saye and James McCalla McFadden and Amelia Eleanor Crawford McFadden.

She was educated at Oakley Hall School and Winthrop College.

Survivors include her children, Mrs. Augusta S. McCallister of Rodman, SC, Mr. Joseph Saye Simpson of Rock Hill, SC, and Dr. James Gaston Simpson of Charleston, SC, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Mary Saye Gaston.

She was preceded in death by her son, William Harper Simpson; brothers, James Hodge Saye and Joseph McJunkin Saye; sisters, Margaret Saye and Augusta Saye Hollis.

Mrs. Simpson grew up as a member of Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church until her marriage, at which time she joined Union Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Richburg, SC.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 16, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Union Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, Richburg, SC, with Dr. J. Allen Derrick and Rev. Neely Gaston officiating. Mrs. Simpson will be buried in the church cemetery. The family received friends at the home of Joseph S. Simpson and his wife, Ann, 626 Oakwood Lane, Rock Hill, SC, Friday, April 15, 2005, from 6-8:00 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Saye Fund, Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church, 3807 Fishing Creek Church Road, Richburg, SC 29729; or Union Association Reformed Presbyterian Church, Building Fund, 3594 Lancaster Highway, Chester, SC 29706; or Thornwell Home and School for Children, 300 S. Broad St., Clinton, SC 29325.

Mary Jane Felkel Austin

GREENWOOD — Mary Jane Felkel Austin, 73, of 1006 Saddle Hill Road, Greenwood, died Thursday, April 15, 2005, in Self Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Tranquil United Methodist Church, Greenwood, with the Rev. Jim Patterson officiating. Visitation will follow services and continue until 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 17, at Jericho United Methodist Church, Elloree, with the Rev. Robin Griffeth and the Rev. Jim Patterson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will follow the services.

Pallbearers will be Don Felkel, Lynn Felkel, Nicholas Felkel, Michael Felkel, David Felkel and Greg Davis.

Mrs. Austin was born Nov. 2, 1931, in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Marion Young and Nancy Nora Bickley Felkel. She had retired as a banker from S.C. Bank and Trust, formerly First National Bank, of Orangeburg and Elloree. She was a member of the Tranquil United Methodist Church of Greenwood and a former member of Jericho United Methodist Church, Elloree.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel Odell Austin of Greenwood; one daughter, Joan A. Duncan of Charleston; one son, Daniel Odell Austin Jr. of Greenwood; and five grandchildren.

Fogle-Hungerpiller Funeral Home of Elloree is in charge of arrangements.

Nathaniel E. Smith

MULLINS — Mr. Nathaniel Elmore Smith, 88, husband of Grace Stewart Smith, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, in Marion County Medical Center after an illness.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16, in Cedardale Cemetery, with the Rev. Holton Siegling officiating. The services will be directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith was born December 29, 1916, in Marion County, a son of the late H. Stacy and Adelle Smith. He attended schools in Mullins. Mr. Smith was an All-American halfback for The Citadel, from which he graduated in 1938. He served as Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Smith’s business interests were Howard B. Smith Insurance Agency, Palmetto Hardwood, Inc., and agriculture.

Surviving Mr. Smith, in addition to his wife of the home, are a daughter, Sally Smith Culler; grandchildren, Gigi Smith DeLong, Stewart Smith Culler, Jacki Ann Smith, Salli White Smith and John Hayne Culler, Jr.; 3 great-grandchildren; and special friends, Lillie Ceo, Sallie Ceo, Constance Lewis, Janette Walker, John Watson Tart and Alfred Williams.

Mr. Smith was predeceased by a son, Nat E. “Butch” Smith, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the S.C. Tobacco Museum, 104 N.E. Front St., Mullins, SC 29574 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Thomas Ousley

HARTSVILLE — Graveside services for Thomas Pierce Ousley, 88, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005, in Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Tony Hemphill will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 16, 2005, from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.

Mr. Ousley died Friday, April 15, 2005. Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late James Franklin and Mary Etta Rhodes Ousley. He graduated from Antioch High School and served in the South Pacific on a patrol torpedo boat during World War II. He was a member and past deacon of West Hartsville Baptist Church and a member of American Legion Post 53 for 60 years, the longest membership in the post. He was employed his entire career with Sonoco Products Co. and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He was an avid Red Fox fan and Gamecock fan.

Surviving are his nephews and spouses, James and Joyce Ousley of Hartsville, SC, Mike and Patty Ousley of Florence, SC.

Mamie Stafford

CHESTERFIELD — Services with burial for Mamie Crowley Stafford, 83, are 3 p.m. Sunday (visitation 2 p.m.) at Bethesda United Methodist Church. Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Chesterfield Co. to Charlie and Sarah Cassidy Crowley, she died April 14, 2005. Surviving are sons, Ronnie “Smokey” Stafford, Tommy Stafford; 6 grandchildren; 11 great and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Hodge Phifer

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — Dorothy Hodge Phifer, 80, passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2005, in Daytona Beach Health and Rehab Center. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2005, at 1 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, S.C., with interment to follow in Old Richland Presbyterian Church, Eastover, S.C.

Dorothy was born January 7, 1925, in Eastover, S.C., the daughter of the late Ernest Hodge and Ruth Saunders. She moved to the Halifax area in 1964 from Concord, N.C. Dorothy was a homemaker in her adult life and will be remembered for love for her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 61 years, Hal Phifer, a brother, Donald, and sisters, Anna, Grace, Ruth Belle, and Ethel.

Left to cherish her memories are her children, Hal “Sonny” Phifer, Jr. (Trish) of Palm Bay, Fla., Vicki Gibson (Bob) of Concord, N.C., Greg Phifer (Maureen) of Kennesaw, Ga., and Anthony “Tony” Phifer (Tracie) of Daytona Beach, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, Randy, Angie, Riki, Tami, Dean, Melissa, Vanessa, Nicole, Tiffany, Megan, Joshua and Garth; 6 great-grandchildren, Garrett, Taylor, Chelsea, McKenzi, Sydney, and Isabelle; sisters, Betty, Janice and Judy and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph Marsh

BLYTHEWOOD — Funeral service for Mr. Joseph H. Marsh, 71, of Blythewood, will be held 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon, April 17, 2005, at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Blythewood, SC, with The Reverend Dr. Robert H. Thompson and The Reverend Walter W. Shealy officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o’clock this (Saturday) evening at Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 1729 Blythewood Road, Blythewood, SC 29016.

Mr. Marsh died Thursday, April 14, 2005, in Providence Northeast Hospital. Born August 18, 1933, in Blythewood, he was a son of the late Alvin Henry and Maggie Frick Marsh. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher for over 30 years and former president of the church council. Mr. Marsh retired from Pet Dairy and worked with Linrich Golf course until his health failed.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Joye Marsh of Blythewood; son, Donald Wayne Marsh of Lexington; daughters, Carolyn Entzminger of Elgin, Ann Lowrance and Debbie Moore and son-in-law Steve Moore, all of Blythewood; grandsons, Jamie and Jason Entzminger of Elgin, Chris Sheppard and Travis Moore of Blythewood and Joseph Marsh of Lexington; two great-granddaughters and one great-grandson; sisters, Ms. Leo (Bet) Guyton of Winnsboro and Ms. James (Mary) Bush of Lexington.
