Andrew Chandler

GEORGETOWN — Andrew “Andy” Watts Chandler, 14, died Thursday, November 4, 2004, at his residence.

Andy was born in Georgetown on July 6, 1990, a son of Barry Lynn Chandler and Melanie Hemingway Chandler. He was member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Andrews and was loved by his teachers and therapists.

Surviving are: his parents of Georgetown; a sister, Muriel Chandler Taylor and her husband, Jason Edward Taylor of Columbia; maternal grandfather, Edsel Hemingway, Sr. of Georgetown; paternal grandmother, Bettie Chandler of Hemingway; his second mother, Geraldine White of Georgetown; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Andy was predeceased by: maternal grandmother, Anne Rhem Hemingway; paternal grandfather, Sherod Thomas Chandler; and a brother, “Rod” Chandler.

Funeral services will be eleven o’clock Saturday morning, November 6, 2004 at the graveside in Union United Methodist Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Paul Bonham.

BLACKVILLE — Services for Charles E. Collins, 55, retired USAF reservist, avid traveler, son of Northrop and Ruth M. Collins, are 2 p.m. Monday at Bethany Baptist Church; burial: Hope Memorial Park. Guinyard & Son’s Funeral Home is in charge. He died October 31, 2004. Surviving: daughter, Shalanda Priester; siblings, Ruth Heyward, Isaac, Jacob, Willie Collins; aunt, Addie Baxter; uncle, Edward Moore.

Willie Ruth Dopson

ALLENDALE — Services for Willie Ruth Dopson, 59, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Magdalene Christian Church with burial in St. Paul Church Cemetery. A daughter of the late Ellie and Irene Chess Dopson, she died November 2, 2004. Surviving are children, Mildred Crespy, Angela McIntosh, Tyrone Washington ; siblings, Dorothy Waldin, Ellie Dopson Jr.; grandchildren.

Maria Duffie

VAUCLUSE — Services for Maria Vogel Duffie, 75, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Napier Funeral Home, Graniteville; burial: Vaucluse Cemetery. Born in Momlingen, Germany, she died Nov. 3, 2004. She was very congenial, always had a loving smile for everyone and will be truly missed. Surviving are husband, Bertrand Duffie Sr.; children, Renate Stone, Raymond, Lanier Duffie; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Don Edwards

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Don H. Edwards, 79, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 2004 at South Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Dave Worthington and the Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday, November 6, 2004 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Edwards died Thursday, November 4, 2004. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late Clanie Brazzle and Emma Watford Edwards. He was a charter member of South Hartsville Baptist Church and served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and RA leader. He retired from Sonoco Products Co. with 43 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the DAV Post #47, Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173, American Legion Post #53, and the Darlington Senior Good Time Band. He served as a Boy Scout leader for Troop # 511.

Surviving are his wife, Frances O’Neal Edwards of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Dell Edwards of Apex, NC, Hyllius Reese and Carol Edwards of Brunswick, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Jim Dority of Apex, NC; brothers, C. B. Edwards of Hartsville, SC, Bobby Edwards of Latta, SC; stepsons and spouses, Autrey O’Neal, Roy and Maria O’Neal, Steve and Joanne O’Neal, all of Darlington, SC; stepdaughters and spouses, Faye and Joe Lewis of Darlington, SC, Linda and David King of Ethel, LA; 7 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Mitchell Edwards, and his brothers, Trellis Edwards and Levell Edwards.

Angel Garvin

ORANGEBURG — Services with burial for Angel My’laisha Garvin are 11 a.m. today at Prospect UMC, Bowman. Born in Orangeburg to Shelton Richardson and Sopheia Garvin, she died Nov. 3, 2004. Surviving are parents; brother, Ty’Ree Davis; grandparents, Delphine Garvin, Willie Boneparte, Gwen Richardson; great-grandmothers, Easter Garvin, Lizzie Loynes; god parents, Ivory Garvin, Rose Felder.

Frances Gunnells

BARNWELL — Frances Still Gunnells, 71, wife of Jesse Gunnells, died Thursday, November 4, 2004 at her residence after a long illness.

Born in Barnwell County, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Ella Joyner Still. She was a member of Mount Lebanon Christian Church. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mount Lebanon Christian Church with the Rev. Ron Franklin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Saturday evening at Mole Funeral Home.

Survivors include her husband of Barnwell, SC; daughters, Yevonne (Vernon) Zissette and Joyce Sanders of Barnwell, SC; sons, Dannie Gunnells, Roger Gunnells and Joey (Tammy) Gunnells of Barnwell, SC; sisters, Azilee Collins, Betty Croft and Vernice Grubbs of Barnwell, SC; brothers, Reuben Still and Laurice Still of Barnwell, SC; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by sisters, Pearline Harley, Lizzie Rowell and Elloree Croft and a brother, Ervin Still.

Jimmy Hellams

GRAY COURT — Memorial service for Jimmy David Hellams, 68, 11 a.m. today at Rabun Creek Baptist Church; visitation follows. Kennedy Mortuary, Laurens, is in charge. Born in Laurens Co. to James and Ruth Nelson Hellams, he died Nov. 4, 2004. Surviving: wife, Betty Arnold Hellams; children, Rev. Greg Hellams, Amie Chumley; sister, Gladys Grantland; grandchildren, Raegan Chumley, Maggie Hellams.

W. Wilbur Hicks

TIMMONSVILLE — Services for William Wilbur Hicks, 91, Mason, widower of Lois Rhinehart Hicks, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethany Free Will Baptist Church; burial: Bethany Cemetery. Born in Florence Co. to Charles and Melissa Vause Hicks, he died Nov. 4, 2004. Surviving are children, Steve Sr., Ryan, Freddie Hicks, Glenda Cottingham; sister, Lela Bell Gause; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Florence Hoover

NEWARK, N.J.— Mass of Christian Burial for Florence Gantt Hoover will be held at 10 a.m. today (visitation 6-9 a.m.) at St. Gabriel Catholic Church with burial in Glenwood Cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson and Jenkins, in care of Robinson & Son Funeral Home, Columbia, S.C. Surviving: children, Harriet Brown, Carolyn Rheba, Terrell, Thomas Hoover; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

LaFern Matuse

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for LaFern Petty Matuse, 71, were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2004 at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Becky Jones officiated.

Mrs. Matuse, widow of Arthur Matuse, died Thursday, November 4, 2004. Born in Darlington Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late George Edward and Mary Gandy Petty. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was a loving, fun mother and grandmother. She was employed with Nitronics for 15 years and retired as owner of Petty’s Store.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, James and Sheila Amerson of Yankton, SD; daughters and son-in-law, Pat and Buckwheat King of Hartsville, SC, Lavel Amerson of Hartsville, SC; sisters, Mary Lyles, Shirley Strickland, Avice Freeman, Daisy Brown, Miriam Edwards, all of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Stacy Seymour, Machelle Riley, Shannon Waldron, Butch Waldron, Chris Bartley, all of Hartsville, SC, Vance Amerson, Jamie Amerson, Kelly Amerson all of Yankton, SD, Eljai Amerson and Tiffany Amerson of Hartsville, SC; 7 great-grandchildren.

Van McLeod

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Van McLeod, 77, of Camden, will be held Sunday, November 7, 2004 at 4 p.m. at Beulah United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Vince Halter will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, November 6, 2004 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to Beulah United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 820 Beulah Church Road, Camden, SC 29020. Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge. Mr. McLeod died Thursday, November 4, 2004. Born in Camden, he was the son of the late Add Ladson and Minnie Grier McLeod. He was a World War II veteran and retired from DuPont after 34 years of service. He was a member of Jamil Temple, Camden Shrine Club, Kershaw Lodge #29 and a lifelong member of Beulah United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Buena Hunter McLeod; daughter, Vanda Guess and her husband, Robert Guess, of Union, SC; son, Richard and his wife, Suzanne, of Aiken, SC; sister, Mrs. Mary Grier; grandchildren, Carolyn and Julie Guess, Amy and Brock McLeod; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, J. Timothy McLeod; sister, Mrs. Sarah Anderson; brothers, Mr. M.C. and Frank G. McLeod Sr.

James Milam

LAURENS — Graveside service for James Eugene “Jimmy” Milam, 87, WWII veteran, 2 p.m. Sunday in Laurens City Cemetery; visitation follows. Kennedy Mortuary is in charge. Born in Newberry to James and Fannie Eleazer Milam, he died Nov. 4, 2004. Surviving are wife, Mary Abell Milam; nieces, Cheryl Ravenel, March Nichols, Caron Seebaldt; nephew, Mike Milam; sisters, Evelyn Milam, Miriam Adair.

John Moody

SALTERS — John Fleetwood Moody, 71, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Moody was born March 10, 1933, in Lake City, a son of the late Walter Scott and Leila Covington Moody. He was a graduate of The Citadel with master’s degrees from the University of South Carolina and Francis Marion University. Mr. Moody was a retired Lt. Colonel in the US Army, where he was a helicopter and airplane pilot. He served in Korea and two tours in Viet Nam. He was awarded 2 Bronze Stars in Viet Nam and 15 Air Medals. Mr. Moody was the author of “The Black Bishop.” He was a member of Union Presbyterian Church and Friends of the Library.

Surviving: his wife, Margaret Dingle Moody of Salters; one grandson, Brendan Kirby of Salters; three brothers, Lide Moody of Lake City, Bill Moody of Dillon and Lee Ray Moody of Walterboro; one sister, Laura Moody of Charleston; two daughters, Maxine Poston of Hendersonville, NC and Laura Jean Reed of Greenville, SC; one stepdaughter, Susan M. Kirby of Savannah, GA.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Union Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Williamsburg Funeral Home.

John Oliver

SANTEE — Services with burial for John Oliver, 65, noon today at Live Oak AME Church, Vance. Born in Vance to Blanie and Alice White Oliver, he died Nov. 1, 2004. Surviving are wife, Jessie Mae Oliver; children, Gwendolyn Bookard, Annie, Valerie, John Jr., Gary, Michael Oliver; siblings, Jessie Smalls, Elizabeth Isaac, Lurine Mazyck, Sadie Williams, Robert, Marion Oliver; stepsister, Carolyn Brightman.

Harry Paiement

LEXINGTON — It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Harry on November 2, 2004 in Lexington, South Carolina. Beloved husband of Alfreda (Coates) and loving father of Mary Smith (John Taylor), and Ron (Dawn). Dearest grandfather of Jennifer of Canning N.S.(Kevin Graham), Nancy of Victoria, B.C.(Steve Glidden), Neil Smith (Ellen McHarg), Leanne (Marc Guidon), Larry (Jennifer-Ann St. Cyr) and Anthony (Genevieve Lanthier), as well as ten great-grandchildren.

Harry will be sadly missed by his many friends and fellow Jamil Shriners. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
