Charles Goodale Sr.

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Mr. Charles Ralph Goodale, Sr., 87, of Columbia, will be held 11 o’clock Thursday morning, May 5, 2005, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, with Mr. Goodale’s grandson, Pastor Brad Goodale officiating. Interment will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 o’clock prior to the service at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Mr. Goodale’s grandsons. Memorials may be made to Philippi Baptist Church, 327 Philippi Church Road, Union, SC 29379.

Mr. Goodale died Monday, May 2, 2005. Born in Camden, SC, he was a son of the late Thomas Edwin and Rosa Shell Northcutt Goodale. He was a member of Philippi Baptist Church, Union, SC, and a former member of Eau Claire Baptist Church. Mr. Goodale was an avid Gamecock Fan who followed all college sports. He was employed by J.W. Conder Company for over 50 years in the Cattle Stockyards and later working Leesville and Laurens in the cattle yards. Mr. Goodale worked up into his 78th birthday. He proudly served his country in WWII in the Army-Air Corps.

Survivors include his sons, Charles R. Goodale, Jr., of Columbia, John F. Goodale and wife Jewell of West Columbia, and Ronald T. Goodale and wife Karen of Columbia; daughter, Jane Robinson and husband Ben of Douglasville, GA; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and the family pet, Jenny. Mr. Goodale was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary Alice Goodale; brothers, Thomas E. Jr., Richard G. James R., Alfred B. and his twin brother, John Franklin Goodale; sisters, Ruth Goodale Truesdale and Edith Goodale O’Rourke.

Dorothy Jeffcoat Dantzler

SANTEE — Dorothy “Dot” Jeffcoat Dantzler, 75, of 571 Stonewall Jackson Drive, Orangeburg, S.C., formerly of Santee, died Monday, May 2, 2005, in Laurel Baye Health Center after an extended illness. Funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2005, at Fogle Hungerpiller Funeral Home in Elloree. Rev. C. Clark McCrary III will officiate. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday night. Burial is in Jerusalem United Methodist Church Cemetery. Born in North, S.C., a daughter of the late Tally Morgan Jeffcoat and the late Queen Ester Shumpert Jeffcoat, she was the widow of Robert Hyram Dantzler. She was a homemaker and previously co-owner of Elloree Drive-In. She was a member of Lake Marion Baptist Church. Survivors: daughter, Dorinda Fugitt, Santee; grandson, Forrest Fugitt, Santee; sister, Ruby Nell Smith, Orangeburg; preceded in death by sister, Willa Dean Livingston and brother, Malcom Jeffcoat. Friends may call at the home of Dorinda Fugitt in Santee and Fogle Hungerpiller Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Elloree First Baptist Church Team Kids and Youth Group, P.O. Box 387, Elloree, SC 29047.

William R. Huffstetler

CHAPIN — William Rudolph Huffstetler, 72, of Chapin, died May 3, 2005. Born in Chapin, he was the son of the late Arthur M. and Willie May Huffstetler and a veteran of the Korean War. He was the managing partner in Huffstetler Brothers residential builders. He was a member of St. Peter (Pineywoods) Lutheran Church where he was a member of the Property Committee, which he formerly chaired, the Social Ministry Committee, and he previously served on church council.

Mr. Huffstetler is survived by his wife of 43 years, Allene Cook Huffstetler; daughter, Julie H. (Dale) Shealy of Prosperity; Scott (Rhonda) Huffstetler and Jody (Liesha) Huffstetler of Chapin; seven grandchildren, William O. Huffstetler, Wesley A. Huffstetler, Jessica R. Shealy, Matthew E. Shealy, Jonathon R. Huffstetler, Colie D. Huffstetler, Jared L. Huffstetler; stepgrandson, Christopher D. Shealy; sisters, Margie Jordan of Calhoun Falls, Doris Long of Newberry, Caro Knight of Johnston, Nell White of North Augusta; brothers, Jack Huffstetler, “Hump” Huffstetler, “Skin” Huffstetler, Jim Huffstetler, all of Chapin.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2005, at St. Peter Lutheran Church with interment to follow in church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the HELP Fund of St. Peter Lutheran Church, 900 Dreher Island Rd., Chapin, SC 29036.

Melvin Yonce

AIKEN — Melvin Virgil Yonce, 69, of Aiken, died May 3. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church with the Rev. Chris Fischer officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Yonce was a lifelong resident of Aiken. He worked for Graniteville Co. as a Textile Manager. He was a member of Aiken Masonic Lodge, Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and the National Guard. Survivors include his mother, Louise Hendrix Yonce, Ridge Spring; his loving wife, Lunette Spradley Yonce; a daughter, Angie Y. (Bobby) Sanders, Graniteville; a son, Kenneth Melvin (Tonja) Yonce, Saluda; three grandchildren, Taylor Ludwick, Trevor Yonce, Braxton Sanders; a sister, Barbara Quattlebaum, Aiken. He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil Yonce and a brother, Danny Yonce. Memorials may be directed to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 1186 Mt. Calvary Road, Johnston, SC 29832. The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at Shellhouse Funeral Home, Inc., 924 Hayne Ave., Aiken.

Diamond Xanthakis

COLUMBIA — Services for Diamond Xanthakis, 79, will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2005, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church with interment to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. Officiating will be Father Aris P. Metrakos. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Kokolis, Chris Kokolis, Chris Manos, Chris Kotsovos, Dr. Tom Kelly, James R. Metts, and Mel Spill. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. (Trisagion Prayers will be at 7 p.m.) on Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund, 1931 Sumter St., Columbia, SC 29201.

Mr. Xanthakis died Monday, May 2, 2005. Born November 6, 1925, in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Theodore and Jennie Papadea Xanthakis. He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Diamond served in the U.S. Navy in WWII, aboard the U.S. Destroyer, and was the recipient of several medals and ribbons. He was a member of Broad River Lodge 377, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, life member of Jamil Temple, he was a member of the Order of Jesters, and served as past president of AHEPA 284.

He was retired owner of Diamond’s Package Stores. He was a joiner and a doer. Diamond loved being active and making friends. He had a heart of gold and loved helping people. Diamond greeted everyone with a big smile and he will be terribly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Mary McClure Xanthakis of Columbia; son, Theodore Xanthakis of Columbia; nieces, Angela Render of Columbia, Theodora Sidoti of Staten Island, NY; and nephew, Chris Manos of West Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Bessie Manos.

Betty Cooper Murdock

BLACKVILLE — Funeral service for Mrs. Betty C. Murdock, 47, will be held Friday, May 6, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, Blackville, South Carolina, with burial in Hope Memorial Park, Barnwell, South Carolina. Pastor Floyd Hughes, Sr. will be officiating. The family will receive visitation of friends Thursday evening, 7-8:30 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, Blackville. Washington ’s Funeral Home of Hampton has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Mrs. Murdock died Friday, April 29, 2005, in Aiken Regional Medical Center, Aiken, South Carolina. “Betty” was born to Mrs. Sadie Cooper and the late Mr. Edward Cooper on November 2, 1957, in Barnwell County, South Carolina.

Mrs. Betty Jean Murdock was a graduate of Blackville-Hilda High School, Class of 1976, Blackville, South Carolina. She furthered her education at Voorhees College, Denmark, South Carolina, where she was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in 1981. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.

Early in life, she became a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Blackville, South Carolina.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories: (2) children, Ms. Nicole Murdock and Master Brandon Felder, both of Blackville, South Carolina; her mother, Mrs. Sadie Washington -Cooper of Blackville, South Carolina; (1) sister, Ms. Jacqueline Cooper of Blackville, South Carolina; (1) brother, Mr. Ernie James Washington , Sr. of Varnville, South Carolina; (3) grandchildren, Jonathan Murdock, Keirra Jenkins and Nicholas Jenkins, all of Blackville, South Carolina; a sister-in-law, Evangelist Shirley Henderson Washington of Varnville, South Carolina; (2) special guardian children, Charlisa Williams and DeAngelo Wright, both of Blackville, South Carolina; (2) nephews, including Mr. Ernie James Washington , Jr. (Mrs. Rivika) of Varnville, South Carolina; (1) niece, Miss Shirlette Monique Washington of Varnville, South Carolina.

Louise B. Miller

REMBERT — Services for Louise Boykin Miller, 80, widow of Nathaniel “Jo Bo” Miller, Sr., 3 p.m. Thursday at Union Baptist Church with burial in the church. Casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Brown’s Funeral Home, Camden, is in charge. Born in Rembert to Joseph W. and Pertell Howard Boykin, she died April 30, 2005.

Surviving: children, Jacqueline Alston, Doris Wiggins, Bertha Thompson, Rosa Keys, Nathaniel Miller, Jr., Richard Miller and Iris Parks; sibling, Azalee Pickney; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

William H. Kirkland Sr.

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for William Hebra Kirkland, Sr., 84, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel with interment to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 7-9 on Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to Kittiwake Baptist Church, 420 Kitti Wake Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169.

Mr. Kirkland died Sunday, May 1, 2005. Born on October 4, 1920, in Aiken, S.C., he was the son of the late Jasper J. and Nettie Wood Kirkland.

He is survived by his children, William H. Kirkland, Jr., James A. Kirkland, Julie Kirkland Wilson, and Gina Rena Kirkland; brother, Lanis Kirkland; sister, Lorena Verney, Barbara Newell; grandchildren, Racheal Gilbert, Michael Kirkland, Preston Kyles, Angel Ringo, Erica Wilson; and four great-grandchildren.

Charlie Hutto

BAMBERG — Mr. Charles Henry “Charlie” Hutto, 64, of 4773 Heritage Highway, died Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at one o’clock Thursday, May 5, 2005, at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes, Ehrhardt-Bamberg Chapel. Interment will follow in Southend Cemetery.

Mr. Hutto was born November 29, 1940, in Bamberg County and was the son of the late Thomas Murray Hutto and Pauline Sanders Hutto. He was the co-owner and operator of Hutto’s Auto Salvage for 20 years. He was a retired mechanic and the maintenance supervisor at Dixie Lawn Service. He will always be remembered for his love of fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Eloise Suggs Hutto; his children, Jay Hutto of Bamberg and Robert Hutto of Bamberg; special friend, Amy Hightower of Bamberg; grandson, Brandon Chad Hutto; brother, Murray Hutto of Bamberg; sister, Elizabeth Williams of Barnwell; several nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Bamberg County Relay for Life.

Family and friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes, Ehrhardt-Bamberg Chapel, 2515 Lowcountry Highway, Ehrhardt. 803.267.1971.

Joseph Cross

MARION — Mr. Joseph Cross, 65, died Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at his residence after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Marion. Burial will follow in Devotion Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday, May 6, from 7-8 p.m. at Richardson Funeral Home in Marion.

Mr. Cross was born in Marion, a son of Maggie Howard Cross and the late Clifford Cross. He was also predeceased by his wife, Minnie Ruth Cross. Mr. Cross attended New Hope Holiness Church in Rains, S.C. and Open Door Baptist Church in Florence, S.C. He had retired from the S.C. Highway Department.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Cross is survived by a niece, Alfreida Cross Moore of Marion; four sons, Joseph Michael Cross of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Nathaniel Cross of West Palm Beach, FL, Chaunte Reaves of Florence, S.C., and Clifford Baccus of Washington , D.C.; five daughters, Lorna Jean Cross of Fairmont, N.C., Joyce Ann Cross of Lumberton, N.C., Angel Wilson of Columbia, S.C., Alicia Reaves of Florence, S.C., and Nina Baccus of Washington , D.C.; five brothers, Mr. Otis Cross of Pleasantville, N.J., Mr. Sammie Cross of Delray Beach, FL, Mr. Clarence Cross of West Palm Beach, FL, and Mr. Jimmy Lee Coit of Winston Salem, N.C., Mr. James Moses Cross of Marion, S.C.; six sisters, Mrs. Lillian (Willie Gene) Reaves of Rains, S.C. Ms. Shirley Cross of Marion, S.C., Mrs. Janie R. Alston of Marion, S.C., Mrs. Doris Rowell of Marion, S.C., Mrs. Delores C. Williams of Marion, S.C., and Mrs. Flora Lee Gleaton of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; five aunts, Mrs. Alice Nichols, Mrs. Janie Mae Brown, Mrs. Vera McKenzie, Mrs. Clara Howard and Mrs. Jean Howard, all of Marion, S.C.; two uncles, Mr. Burnie Howard of Mullins, S.C., and Mr. Edward McKenzie of Marion, S.C.; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 44 nieces and nephews; caretakers, Joyce Reaves of Florence, S.C., and Henrietta Brown of Mullins.

Celestine L. Ferranto

DENMARK — Services for Mrs. Celestine L. Ferranto, 82, will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2005, at Mercer Funeral Home with Rev. Andy Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Denmark Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Mercer Funeral Home and other times at the home of J.T. and Audrey Phillips, 683 McCain Drive, Denmark.

Mrs. Ferranto died May 4, 2005, in Laurel Bay Health Care in Williston. She was born August 14, 1922, in Denmark, a daughter of the late William Jennings and Mary Ella Sellers Lancaster.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Denmark, and had resided in Denmark for many years with her late sister, Inez L. Phillips.

Surviving are a sister, Bessie Reimer of St. Augustine, Fla., and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pearl Kelly Brown

BLYTHEWOOD — Services for Mrs. Pearl Kelly Brown will be held 2 p.m. Friday (viewing at 1 p.m.) at Blythewood Seventh Day Adventist Church with burial in Memorial Gardens of Columbia. Wake services will be held 6 p.m. this evening at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Mrs. Pearl Kelly Brown was born June 18, 1923, to the late Minnie Murphy Nicholson and the late James Levi Kelly. Mrs. Brown was adopted as an infant and reared by loving grandparents, the late James and Carrie Kelly. She departed this physical life on April 30, 2005, in Palmetto Baptist Hospital as the result of a fall she experienced October 2004.

Mrs. Brown was reared by loving grandparents whom she always lovingly called Mom and Dad. She thrived in an atmosphere of love, spiritual guidance, and service to others.

While her soft-spoken voice has been silenced, her legacy lives on as she is survived by six daughters, Willie (Michael) Silvera of Van Nuys, California, Minnie (James) Anderson, Yvonne (McKinley, Jr.) Williams, Barbara (Clinzy, Sr.) Oliver of Blythewood, South Carolina, Shirley Nelson of Loma Linda, California, and Patricia Lewis of Blythewood, South Carolina; one sister, Melvina Rush of Baltimore, Maryland; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Sarah Brown and Mrs. Cherrie Brown of Blythewood, South Carolina; twenty grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Brown shared a very close relationship with first cousin, lovingly referred to as her almost/sister, Ms. Plummer Middleton of Blythewood, South Carolina.

Michael Mack

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Michael Timothy “Rob” Mack, 48, formerly of North, S.C., died May 1, 2005, in Shands Jacksonville Hospital. Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at Jerusalem Baptist Church near North, burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 tonight at W.B. Crumel Funeral Home, North. Friends may call at the residence of his mother, Mrs. Carrie Felder, 1231 Bedford Ave., North, and the funeral home.
