Edward William Bartsch
BLYTHEWOOD — Funeral Services for Master Sergeant Edward William Bartsch, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), 73, of Blythewood, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Pine View Baptist Church, 111 Pine View Church Road, Blythewood, with Rev. Charles L. Miller officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 3:00 p.m. Interment, with full military honors, will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be the U.S. Air Force. The family will receive friends at Woodridge Funeral Home Tuesday from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Pine View Baptist Church, P.O. Master Sergeant Bartsch died Sunday, June 4, 2006, in Providence Hospital. Born July 19, 1932, he was the son of the late Emil A. Bartsch and Bertha Adams Bartsch. He had been a resident of Blythewood since 1964. Master Sergeant Bartsch began his military career in May 1953 by enlisting in the U.S. Air Force and later enlisting in the South Carolina Air National Guard, serving during the Berlin Crisis. He retired with 23 years of dedicated service to his country. His awards and decorations include the Air Force Good Conduct Medal (three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award (One Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster), Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Ribbon (Second Oak Leaf Cluster), Active State Service Medal (15 years), South Carolina Exceptional Service Medal with Berlin Clasp, the Governor Unit Citation, and the Guardsman’s Retirement Medal. Following his retirement, he had worked for Fort Jackson Fire Dept. and Riverbanks Zoo. He was a member of Pine View Baptist Church and was a Mason.

Surviving are his loving wife, Lillie Mae Bartsch of Blythewood, SC; two daughters, Judy Bartsch and Sandra Bartsch, both of Blythewood; two sons, Eric Bartsch and Kiley of Blythewood, and Kenneth Bartsch and Roura of Hopkins; a sister, Mildred Bartsch of Columbia; two brothers, Arthur E. Bartsch of Columbia, and Charles F. Bartsch of Texas ; a sister-in-law, Della Mae Turner of Blythewood; four grandchildren, Emily Grace Bartsch, Shana Lynn Pye, Daniel Bartsch, and Christian Bartsch; numerous nieces and nephews, and close family friends, Howard Clay, Wendell Tharpe and Julian Carroll.

Bernice Lewis Jones
IRMO — Funeral service for Bernice Lewis Jones, 77, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Riverland Hills Baptist Church with burial to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo. Memorials may be made to Riverland Hills Baptist Church.

Mrs. Jones, wife of the late Julius G. Jones, Jr., died Saturday, June 3, 2006. Born in Conway, she was a daughter of the late Oma Benjamin Lewis and Alberta Skipper Lewis. She retired from BellSouth after more than 35 years. She was a member of Telephone Pioneers and the Red Hat Society.

She was a member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church where she was a member of the Oasis Club.

A loving mother, wife, grandmother, sister and best friend, she is survived by her sons, Julius G. Jones, III, and his wife, Patricia, of Irmo, and Alan B. Jones and his wife, Connie, of Irmo; sisters, Cecil Davis of Conway, Frances Clanton of Charlotte, N.C., Mildred Brooker of Summerville, and Mary Moore of Conway; grandchildren, Julius G. Jones, IV, Zachary Jones, Tammy Crowson, and Johnny Davis; great-grandchildren, Krista Keisler and Kaitlyn M. Jones; and a special friend, Walter Hembree. She was predeceased by a brother, Odell Lewis.

Karen Yongue
IRMO — Service for Karen Strickland Yongue, 52, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, with burial in Dutch Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Frances Mack Elementary School, 161 Gaston Street, Swansea, SC 29053. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

Mrs.Yongue died Sunday, June 4, 2006. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of Robert K. Strickland, Sr. and Dorothy A. Strickland. She received a master’s degree in Education from USC and had taught at Frances Mack Elementary for 12 years.

Surviving are her parents of Chapin; brother, Robert K. Strickland, Jr. of Chapin; godchild, Greta Ballard of Cayce; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Floyd Allen Whitted
SARASOTA, Fla. — Mr. Floyd Allen Whitted, Sr., 95, of Sarasota, Fla., died Sunday afternoon, June 4, 2006, at his residence after an extended illness.

Born June 4, 1911, in Manatee County, Fla., he was the son of the late Allen Whitted and Viola Walker Whitted McKendree. He was a retired electrician and was of the Presbyterian faith.

He is survived by two sons, Floyd Allen Whitted, Jr. of Sarasota, Fla. and Ira Beach and wife, Emily, of Varnville, S.C.; one sister, Christine Standridge of Bradenton, Fla.; one granddaughter, Sandra Cannon and husband, George, of Varnville; and three great-grandchildren, Nathan, Jeremy and Clay Cannon. He was married to the late Vera Bennett Whitted.

Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Maye River Baptist Church Cemetery near Bluffton, S.C., conducted by Rev. Glenn Samples and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service.

Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, 300 Mulberry St., Hampton, SC 29924, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Alex Thompson
CAYCE — Graveside services for Alex Blackwood Thompson, 61, of Cayce, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, in Celestial Memorial Gardens, officiated by Rev. John McKeown. Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to Boy Scouts of America, Indian Waters Council.

Mr. Thompson died Sunday, June 4, 2006. Born in Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late Alex Blackwood and Clara Baggett Thompson. He was employed with HTT Harsco Track Technologies.

Surviving are his wife, Joy Boyer Thompson of Cayce; daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Collin Jeffcoat III of Florence, Charlotte and Larry Thomas of Leesville; and four grandchildren.

Marilyn M. Truluck
COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Marilyn Miller Truluck, 78, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6409 Satchelford Road, Columbia, SC 29206 for support of their charities.

Ms. Truluck died Sunday, June 4, 2006. Born in Olanta, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Alonzo P. and Ruth Jordan Truluck. She was a graduate of Dreher High School and retired from the Social Security Administration. She worked part-time for Young Hearing Aid Service and was a member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Surviving are her sisters, Almena Truluck Layton and Rebecca Truluck Attuso, both of Columbia; special friend, Frank Brennecke, Jr.; sister-in-law, Gloria Dunlap Truluck; nieces and nephews, “Mimi’s surrogate grandchildren”, Joseph W. and Doris Giles Layton, Alonzo M. (Lon) and Cynthia Forehand Layton, Betty Kay Smyrl, David Cole, Charles Francis Gibson, Stuart and Allison Gibson Simmonds, Shawn and Laura Layton Studley, Greg and Melanie Layton Prewitt, James and Amy Layton Eubanks, Jeff and Debra Hall Layton, Andrew Travis Layton, Marlena Alexandria Shapiro, Thomas Richard Smyrl III, Michael and Marilyn (Mary Beth) Stalnaker, Craig and Karen McFarland Giles, Phil and Tara Giles Farmer, Brad and Shelly Taylor Giles, Diane Truluck Poston, Jim and Gloria Truluck Radin, Brian and Debbie Truluck, Russell and Rita Truluck, and several great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Jack L. Truluck; niece, Jane Layton Gibson; and nephew, Danny Travis Layton.

Carroll Jefferson “Jeff” Ringer
COLUMBIA — Carroll Jefferson “Jeff” Ringer, 74, of Midland Center, 8301 Farrow Road, Walnut Residence, Columbia, died June 4, 2006, in Palmetto Richland Hospital.

Mr. Ringer was born October 9, 1931, in Pomaria, a son of the late Thomas E. and Ola Mae Miller Ringer. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pomaria.

Mr. Ringer is survived by three brothers, Thomas E. Ringer, Jr. of Columbia, Hoyt Ringer and Richard Ringer, both of Pomaria; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church by the Rev. Phillip Coggins.

Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 209 New Hope Road, Pomaria, SC 29126.

Kate R. “Bobbie” Moriarty
COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Kate R. “Bobbie” Moriarty, 93, will be held Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial to follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Kilbourne Park Baptist Church.

Mrs. Moriarty, wife of the late James Moriarty, died Monday, June 5, 2006. Born in Lancaster County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis Pinkney and Lois Ellis Robinson. She was a member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church.

Surviving are her brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl Ellis and Jean Robinson of Denver, N.C., and Malcolm N. and JoAnne Robinson of Lexington; sisters, Annie Mildred Faulkenberry of Heath Springs, Edna Hinson of Great Falls, and Eileen Hill of Santee; stepsons, Marshall Moriarty and Miles Moriarty; and stepdaughters, Maureen Dumin and Merle Philbrick. She was predeceased by her first husband, Walter Kelly; a brother, Spencer J. Robinson; sisters, Eunice Robinson, Faye Stogner, Elizabeth Pittman, and Leona Robinson; and a stepson, Morton Moriarty.

Harold L. Starr
COLUMBIA — Service with military rites for Major Harold L. Starr, U.S. Army, (Ret), 81, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Southland Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Save Our Strays, The Animal Protection League or to the Tree of Life Congregation. Visitation will be Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Major Starr died Sunday, June 4, 2006. Born in Macon, Ga., he was a son of the late Herman and Frances Cohen Starr. He retired from the Army in 1968, having served in the European Theater of Operations during WW II, in Korea and in Vietnam. He was a member of Tree of Life Congregation, The American Legion, DAV and the Retired Officers Association.

Surviving are daughters and son-in-law, Pamela S. Starr of the home and Cynthia S. and Ronald D. Webb of West Columbia; sister, Olivia S. Berger of Gainesville, Fla; grandchildren, Savanah, Taylor and Jordan Webb; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, 1st Lt. John Howard Starr, killed in action during WW II.

Vermelle Grant Rhodes
COLUMBIA — Homegoing services for Deaconess Vermelle Grant Rhodes of Columbia, will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Palmetto Cemetery.

Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive, is in charge.

Mrs. Rhodes died June 2, 2006. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of Willie and Lizzie Trapp Grant. She retired as a Cosmetologist and owner of “Nell’s Beauty Shop,” and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, where she served as Deaconess, a member of the Musical Choir and the Pulpit Aide Club.

Surviving are her daughter, Evelyn Grant Durham; nephews, David C. Francis, Jr., Rev. Thomas L. Francis, Sr. and Dr. W. Brenard Francis.

Mamie Lee Lott
SALUDA — Services for Mamie Lee Lott, 77, widow of John Wesley Lott, 2 p.m. Wednesday at Antioch Baptist. Burial: Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Butler & Sons F.H. in charge. Born in Saluda Co. to Mose and Fairy Bell Simpkins Davis, she died June 1, 2006. Survivors: children, Jerry Lott, Shirleen Lott-Bosket; siblings, Elijah, Henry, Mose Davis Jr., Lela Higgins, Dorothy Kinard; grandchildren; more.

Ernest Jones Jr.
SALUDA — Services for Ernest Jones Jr., 76, will be 1 p.m. Thursday at New Salem CME Church. Butler and Sons F.H. is in charge. Born in Saluda County to Ernest and Laura Mobley Jones, he died June 3, 2006. Surviving are daughter, Ernestine Wheaten; stepchildren, Julius Jr., Eddie, Alice Loftin, Valleria Holton; sisters, Mary Chappells, Hattie Coats, Queen Copeland, Ethel Anderson; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Evelina Hannibal
MAYESVILLE — Services for Evelina Hannibal, 87, widower of William Hannibal, are 3 p.m. Wednesday at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church burial: Mayesville Cemetery. Viewing is 3-7 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary, Sumter. Born in Lee County to Harry Wilson and Henrietta Myers, she died June 1, 2006. Surviving: children, Mary Lou, Elijah, Robert, John Hannibal, Henrietta Wilson; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; others.

Jacqueline Grigsby Kelly
ELGIN — Funeral service for Jacqueline “Jackie” Ann Grigsby Kelly, 50, will be held 4 o’clock Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Spears Creek Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Reverend Joe T. Youngblood will officiate. Serving as pallbearers will be Roy Dinkins, Kenny Wilson, Johnny Youngblood, Rodney Jordan, Eddie Jordan and Dennis Barfield. Honorary pallbearers will be the ladies of the Women’s Auxiliary of VFW Post 11079. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 this evening at Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to VFW 11079, 2464 Bowen St., Elgin, SC 29045-9013.

Ms. Kelly died June 4, 2006. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of Edith Hornsby Ariail and the late William B. Grigsby. She graduated from Keenan High School and Kenneth Shuler School of Cosmetology and worked as a hair stylist for 18 years. For the past five years she worked in financial services and most recently, with Quick Credit. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of VFW Post 11079.

Survivors include her son, Phillip Ariail of Lugoff and son and daughter-in-law, Dustin and Amanda Michalko of Michigan; daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Paul Vanthof of Lugoff; six grandchildren, Kristian and Shane Ariail, Logan, David and Gavin Michalko, Chandler Padgett; siblings, Barbara Griffin of Tega Cay, Mike Grigsby, Darrell and wife, Pam Grigsby, Calvin Grigsby and Tina Gregory, all of Elgin; many nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins. In addition to her father, she was predeceased by a sister, Dawn Ariail; grandparents, Roy and Lillie Hornsby and Bryant and Sadie Grigsby; and a nephew, William Darrell Grigsby Jr.

Ted Hayen
COLUMBIA — Service for Elmar Theodor “Ted” Hayen, 62, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Northeast Presbyterian Church with burial in Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Salters, at 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Northeast Presbyterian Church Building Fund or to Make a Wish Foundation of the Midlands. Visitation will be Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mr. Hayen died Sunday, June 4, 2006, in a car accident. Born in Wurzburg, Germany, he was raised by his grandmother, Luise Wolz. Ted immigrated to the United States in the early sixties. He graduated from the University of South Carolina and was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma. Ted entered the Army and was selected for the OCS program. After serving for three years as an infantry officer, which included a trip to the Far East, Ted left the service and enrolled in the University of South Carolina School of Law. He was director of career development with Russell and Jeffcoat Realty.

Since 1972, Ted had been involved in numerous activities in the real estate profession, in the military, and in the community. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in 1993 with the rank of Colonel after 25 years of total service. In the real estate field, Ted spent a number of years attending graduate real estate courses to obtain the coveted Certified Real Estate Broker (CRB) designation. He was actively involved with the local Board of Realtors and held a number of positions, which included director and chairperson. In the community, Ted was on the Board of Directors of Make A Wish Foundation of South Carolina and served as liason between the Make A Wish Foundation of South Carolina and Russell and Jeffcoat Realtors. He served as past president of Spring Valley Rotary, two-time past president of Consolidated Multiple Listing Service, and past president of the South Carolina Chapter of Certified Real Estate Brokers.. Mr. Hayen was a member of Northeast Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Lorraine Hayen; and daughter, Elza Hayen of Columbia.

Rosemary E. Cummings
IRMO — A Memorial Service for Rosemary E. Cummings, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel at Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Cummings passed away June 3, 2006. Born November 10, 1944, in Elmira, NY, she was the daughter of the late Gabriele and Anna Julianne Cacciotti.

Mrs. Cummings is survived by her husband, Alan Cummings; sons, Scott Cummings of Suwanee, GA, Brian Cummings of Lawrenceville, GA, and Todd Cummings of Winston-Salem, NC; brothers, John Cacciotti of Horseheads, NY, Louis Cacciotti of Elmira, NY, Dominic Cacciotti of Horseheads, NY, and Michael Cacciotti of Tampa, FL; grandchildren, Tony, Amanda, Ashleigh, Gabriele, Dominic, Rosemary, Theresa, Kelsie and Cacie.

Franklin R. Cokley
CAYCE — Services for Franklin R. “Button” Cokley, 50, will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Pearson’s F.H., Columbia, burial in Robinson’s Memorial Gardens, visitation 1-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Born in Lexington County to Rosebud Gadsen and Eugene Cokley, he died June 2, 2006. Survivors: mother; daughter, Keisha Nelson; siblings, Melissa, Eugene Jr., Luther, Eddie Cokley; nieces; nephews; more.

Mary Ellen Brumbaugh
HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Mary Ellen Ritter Brumbaugh, 88, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins will officiate, with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Coker College, 300 E. Mrs. Brumbaugh, widow of Nickey Brumbaugh, died Thursday, June 1, 2006. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, had retired from Coker College as an assistant librarian, was a graduate of DePauw University and a member of the League of Women Voters, Thursday Study Club, book club, garden club and poetry club.

Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, John and Sarah Brumbaugh of Charlottesville, VA, Lee Brumbaugh of Reno, NV; grandchildren, Katherine Mauller, Hope Proffitt, Eddie Brumbaugh, Susan Brumbaugh; three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Alan Ritter.
