Earl Elijah Risher

EUTAWVILLE – Mr. Earl Elijah Risher, 55, of Eutawville, died Friday, December 7, 2007 at his home.

A memorial service will be 6 p.m. Wednesday at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill with Rev. Ron Causey officiating. Visitation will follow the service. Burial will be private.

Earl was born in Moncks Corner a son of Ida Bell Weatherford Risher and the late Elijah Risher. He was a former heavy equipment operator, a member of the County Line Hunting Club, and an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are his mother of Cross; daughters, Tara Caughman of Lexington, and Kellie Ramirez of Orangeburg; a son, Ryan Risher of Conway; sisters, Judy Jackson of Santee, and Janice Scott of Branchville; a brother, Gene Risher of Cross; and a grandson.

Mary Workman Shuler
12/29/1914 - 12/10/2007

HOLLY HILL – Mrs. Mary Workman Shuler, 92, of the Providence Community, widow of Frank Harlan Shuler, died Monday, December 10, 2007 at her daughter’s home in Holly Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. Karen E. Starr and Rev. Zach Farmer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Shuler was born in Clinton, SC a daughter of the late John Floyd Workman and Mary Bonds Workman. She was a graduate of Clinton High School and graduated magna cum laude from Presbyterian College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Mrs. Shuler also did graduate work at the University of South Carolina. She was a dedicated teacher for 31 years having taught at Dunbarton High School, Dunbarton, SC from 1935 -1939, Providence Elementary from 1951-1978, and was principal of Providence Elementary from 1971-1978. Mrs. Shuler was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary society for women educators. She finished out her late husband’s term on the Orangeburg County School District III Board of Trustees. A member of the Providence United Methodist Church, she served as president of United Methodist Women, taught Sunday School, and held offices on the administrative board.

Surviving are three children, Mary Amelia S. (Hugh “Mac”) McCord of Anderson, SC, Frank H. (Sue) Shuler, Jr. of Kingsport, TN, and Jean S. (Charles “Chuck”) Felkel of Holly Hill, SC; sister-in-law, Betty C. Shuler, of Holly Hill, SC; six grandchildren, Thad (Leanna) McCord of Greer, SC, Beth McCord (Andy) Ginn of Anderson, SC, Claire Shuler (Andy) Arbaugh of Kingsport, TN, Fran Shuler (Mike) Richardson of Winston-Salem, NC, Chris (Abigail)Felkel of Irmo, SC, and Kevin (Jennifer) Felkel of Lexington, SC; eleven great-grandchildren, Kelly, Douglas, and Angus McCord, Andrew and Katherine Ginn, Olivia and Matthew Richardson, Hayden and Madeleine Felkel, and Ashton and Ryan Felkel.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this Wednesday evening at the Providence United Methodist Church, and other times at the home of Chuck and Jean Felkel in Holly Hill.

Don H. Gentry
11/11/1948 - 12/11/2007

HOLLY HILL – Mr. Don H. Gentry, 59, of Holly Hill, wife of Luella Gentry, died Tuesday, December 11, 2007 in Holly Hill from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be 11 am Friday, December 14, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Holly Hill with Dr. David Brien and Rev. Earl Behr officiating. Burial will follow in the Holly Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Gentry died Tuesday. Born in Charleston, he was the son of the late Jasper Milton Gentry and Priscilla Northcutt Gentry. He was a graduate of Trident Tech and was a maintenance mechanic at Alcoa for 28 years. He was a member and former deacon of the First Baptist Church. Don was a family man, who enjoyed fishing, playing golf, and being an avid Gamecock fan. He was preceded in death by a brother, John T. Gentry.

Surviving are his wife, Luella Kader Gentry of Holly Hill; a son, Eric Leigh (Daly) Gentry of Lexington; sister, L. Patricia (Wallace) Brazel of Goose Creek; brothers, Jasper M. (Michele) Gentry, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, and George R. (Mary) Gentry of Jacksonville, FL; and a sister-in-law, Johnnie Ann Gentry Carroll of Eutawville.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm this Thursday at Avinger Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, PO Box 235, Holly Hill, SC 29059, or to a charity one’s choice.

Jessie Shirley Martin
06/09/1933 - 12/11/2007

ELLOREE – Mrs. Jessie Shirley Martin, 74, of Elloree, died Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

The funeral will be 3 pm Thursday at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill with Pastor Phillip Coggins officiating. Burial will follow in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

Mrs. Martin was born in Waterloo, SC a daughter of the late Bill Brown and Mattie Blanche Davenport Brown. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Surviving are daughters, Nancy (Rex) Beach of Walterboro, and Vickie (Oscar) Strock of Santee; a son, Tony (Vickie) Martin of Rock Hill; sisters, Ann Dowd of Aiken and Kathy Hill of Greenwood; brothers, John, Paul and Tom Brown, all of Ware Shoals; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Hugo Rickenbaker of Elloree.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday beginning at 2 pm.

Gary Edward Jackson
02/10/1945 - 12/22/2007

HOLLY HILL – Gary Edward “Sneaky Snake” Jackson, 62, of Holly Hill, husband of Teresa “Tebbie” McManus Jackson, died Saturday, December 22, 2007 in a Charleston hospital.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Corinth Baptist Church with Rev. Buddy Locke and Rev. Karen Starr officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Jackson was born in Holly Hill a son of the late Leroy T. Jackson, Sr. and Eliza Brown Jackson. A graduate of Holly Hill High School, he was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a retired automobile mechanic. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and a member of the Pine Tree Hunting Club. He was preceded in death by siblings, Elizabeth Wiggins, Leroy Jackson, Jr. and David Leon Jackson.

Surviving are his wife of the home; daughters, Jennifer Lynn Carter and Ashley Teresa (Chris) Smith of Holly Hill; sisters, Virginia J. Creed and Betty (Isaac) Oglesby of Holly Hill; brothers, Robbie L. (Ann) Jackson and Alonzo (Hazel) Jackson of Cordova; and grandchildren, Alexandria Spires, Tristen Carter, and Cody Smith of Holly Hill.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. this Sunday at Avinger Funeral Home.

James "Jim" Genewick
04/17/1935 - 12/23/2007

SANTEE – Mr. James P. “Jim” Genewick, 72, of Santee, died Sunday, December 23, 2007 at his home.

A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2007 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Santee with Father David Whitman officiating. Burial will be private.

Mr. Genewick was born in Lockport, NY a son of the late James “Jack” J. Genewick and Stella Haber Genewick. He was a 1958 graduate of Salem College in Salem, WV and retired from General Motors after 32 years. Jim and his wife, retired to Santee in 1991. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Santee where he was a member of the Men’s Association, and was predeceased by sisters, Virginia Brick and Marge Haenle.

Jim was a long time active participant in the Lockport Midget Baseball League, as a player, manager and the executive. As chairman of the league in 1987 he helped expand the league into surrounding areas. He also coached basketball in the YMCA Boys League and the Lockport Catholic Middle School League.

Surviving are his wife, Caroline Genewick of Santee; daughters, Stephanie (Tom) Finnan of Hilton Head, and Jennifer Genewick of Brandon, FL; a son Ronald (Dona) Genewick of Wexford, PA; a brother, Edward Genewick of Buffalo, NY; grandchildren, Hilary and Lydia Genewick, Andrew Godfrey, Molly Finnan, and Kris Diedrick; brothers-in-law, Donald (Lois) Fluharty and Phillip (Dorothy) Fluharty, of Santee; and several nieces and nephews.

Don A. Vititoe
08/30/1930 - 12/27/2007

Don Alfred Vititoe, 77, of Hanahan and Eutawville, died Thursday, December 27, 2007 in a Charleston hospital.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Avinger Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Scott officiating. Burial will follow in the Eutawville Cemetery.

Mr. Vititoe was born in Frenchburg, KY a son of the late George W. Vititoe and Hattie Coldiron Vititoe. He was a retired master sergeant from the US Air Force and retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard in Shop #56. He was a member of the VFW, and the Vance Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by a son, Don A. Vititoe and a brother, John Vititoe.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Nelida Alberty Vititoe of the home; a daughter, Myra (Harry) Chubb of Eutawville; a granddaughter, Amelia Chubb of Eutawville; sisters, Esther Alpset of Dayton, OH, Maggie Taylor and Rossetta Dyer, both of Middletown, OH, and Connie Ballard of Mt. Sterling, KY; and a brother, William Vititoe of Louisville, KY.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Betty Murray Hightower
04/28/1938 - 1/2/2008

SUMTER – Mrs. Betty Murray Hightower, 69, of Sumter, widow of Gerald G. Hightower, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at her home.

Graveside services will be 12 noon Saturday in the Holly Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8p.m. Friday at the residence, 1136 Swamp Mill Circle in Sumter.

Mrs. Hightower was born in Holly Hill, a daughter of the late Carl U. Murray and Esther Salisbury Murray. She was a 1956 graduate of Edmond High School in Sumter and helped in getting her class together for a meal once a month. She loved frogs, gospel music, and all of her internet friends from all over the world as she was known as B.J.

Surviving are a daughter, Denise Thompson of Sumter; sons Major David T. Hightower of Colorado Springs, CO and Michael W. Hightower of Rochester, NY; grandchildren, Karin Westhead, Christfer Hightower, and Benjamin Hightower; great-grandchildren, Katelynn Carroway and Shane Carroway; caregiver and cousin, Carolyn B. Hutto; and cousin, John Bowzard.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Sumter Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Rd., Sumter, SC 29150.
