Inza Washington

COLUMBIA — Mrs. Inza Taylor Washington , 56, wife of Bernard W. Washington , Sr., of 3840 Ayshire Ave., Columbia, died Friday, August 13, 2004 at the Baptist Medical Center, Columbia, SC.

Born in Georgetown, SC, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Edward E. Taylor and Mrs. Mattise Wilson Taylor. Raised in Columbia, she was a graduate of C.A. Johnson High School and Benedict College, receiving a B.S. degree in Biology. She received her M.S. degree in Mathematics Education from the University of South Carolina. With 36 years of teaching in the Richland County I Public Schools, mainly at W.J. Keenan High School, she remained active in teaching until her illness. Active in professional organizations, she was Vice-President and President of the Richland County Education Association, officer in the South Carolina Education Association, and a regular delegate to the National Education Association annual conventions. In community circles, she joined her mother in Gamma Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She was also a member of the Jack & Jill organization. From childhood she, along with her family, was an active member of Bethel AME Church in Downtown Columbia, later becoming a member of Providence Independent Methodist Church in Columbia where she served on the Finance Committee.

She is survived by her husband, Bernard W. Washington , Sr.; a son, Bernard W. Washington , Jr. (Gerelene); a daughter, Tamara E. Washington Jenkins (Carlos, Sr.) four grandchildren; one sister-in-law; and a host of other relatives.

Services will be held 4:00 pm Thursday at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 1200 Fontaine Place in Columbia, conducted by the Rev. Willis Brown. Burial will be in the Bouie Family Cemetery, Kennerly Rd, Irmo. Visitation is 7:00 pm today at Palmer Memorial Chapel. Memorials may be made to The Inza Taylor Washington Scholarship Fund, c/o Institutional Advancement, Benedict College, 1600 Harden Street, Columbia, SC 29204.

Margaret Turner

PRATTVILLE, Ala. — Mrs. Margaret Christine Phillips Turner, 61, of 1903 Calumet Parkway died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at her home. She was born in Morgantown, W.Va. Services (in S.C.) will be 1:00 PM Friday, August 20, 2004, at St. Matthias Episcopal Church with interment in Grandview Memorial Park, Hollis Lakes Road, with Rev. Jim Blanton officiating.

Mrs. Turner was a native of Morgantown, W.Va., and a daughter of the late Orion Junior Phillips and the late Helen Coffman Phillips. A homemaker, Mrs. Turner was a member of St. Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church in Prattville and was very active in both her church and her community. She is survived by her husband Arbie Tuner, of the home; 3 sons: William Ray Schneider of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Wesley Arbie Turner of Rock Hill, S.C. and William Edward Schneider, IV of St. Petersburg, FL; 4 daughters: June Christy Carroll of Monroe, LA, Stephanie Elaine Hughes of Rock Hill, Deanna Dawn Ross of Winnsboro, S.C. and Lauren Celeste Murray of Rock Hill; her brother, James Patrick Phillips of Lake-in-the-Hills, IL; her sister, Mary Catherine Duncan, of Sarasota, FL and 6 grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday, 8-19-04 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Rd., Rock Hill, S.C. 29731 with a Vigil service to be conducted at 5:30 PM.

Memorials may be made to St. Matthias Episcopal Church Building Fund, 535 Hollis Lakes Rd., Rock Hill, S.C. 29732.

Ronald Wyatt

ENIGMA, Ga. — Services for Ronald Buford Wyatt, 58, 2 p.m. Saturday at Cobb Funeral Chapel, Moultrie (visitation 6-8 p.m. Friday); burial in Cobb Suncrest Memorial Gardens. Born in Colquitt Co. to Clarence and Zullie Newton Wyatt, he died August 15, 2004. Surviving are wife, Rosalind Eisner Wyatt; daughters, Tracy Wyatt, Tanya Brown; brother, Arthur Wyatt; grandchildren, Michelle, William, Justin, Alexis Brown.

Willie McKay

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Mr. Willie Alfred McKay, 83, will be held 11 o’clock Saturday, August 21, 2004 in Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel with interment in Royal Pines Church Cemetery. Officiating will be The Reverend Nancy Brazell. The family will receive friends from six until eight o’clock this (Friday) evening at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Thomas Rowe, Mike McKay, Dennis Burton, Michael Burton, Willie McKay, Jr., and Robbie Owens. Honorary pallbearers will be The Men of Royal Pines Church. Memorial may be made to Royal Pines Church, 229 Fore Avenue, Columbia, SC 29229.

Born in Richland County, SC, he was a son of the late Joseph James McKay and Annie Ruth Parker McKay. Mr. McKay worked with Modern Exterminating for fifty years. He was a member and Deacon of Royal Pines Church.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Ruby Lee McKay; two daughters, Loretta Moore and Dailean Rogers of Columbia; a son, Willie A, McKay, Jr., of Charlotte, NC; stepchildren, Debbie Rowe, Loretta Rawls, Stan, Roger, Donald, and Larry Ford, Dennis and Michael Burton, all of Columbia; a number grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mary Branham

WINNSBORO — Funeral services for Mary John Holden Branham will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at the graveside in the First Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Donny McKenzie. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Pope Funeral Home.

Mrs. Branham, 41, died Friday, August 20, 2004.

Born in Baltimore, MD, Sept. 7, 1962, she was a daughter of the late Raymond Edward Holden and Mary Frances Ayers Holden.

Surviving are her husband, Steven Branham of the home; son, Joseph Branham of Winnsboro; brothers, Henry Holden of Newberry and Eddie Holden of Winnsboro; sisters, Pauline Marthers of Winnsboro and Regina Boland of Prosperity.

She was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Holden.

Hazel Loadholt

FAIRFAX — Hazel B. Loadholt died Friday night, August 20, 2004 in Lexington Extended Care after a long battle with Alzheimers.

Born June 27, 1932 in Gaffney, she was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Leonard Belcher. She was a member of St. Nicholas Lutheran Church where she was the organist for many years. She was the secretary at Fairfax Middle School for over 20 years.

Surviving are daughters, Gail L. Hugus of Pensacola, FL and Anne L. Hall of Lexington; son, Dave Loadhold of Lexington; sister, Carolyn Ayer of Bamberg; brothers, Donnie Belcher of Florence and Johnny Belcher of Summerville; grandchildren, Amelia and Paul Hugus and Jackson Hall.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am August 23, 2004 at St. Nicholas Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation is 3 to 5 pm Sunday at Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home, Allendale.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202 or St. Nicholas Lutheran Church.

Wanda Broom

BLYTHEWOOD — Funeral service for Mrs. Wanda Hinson Broom, 62, will be held at 11 o’clock Monday, August 23, 2004 at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, with The Reverend Horst A. Trojahn officiating. Interment will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from three until five o’clock this (Sunday) afternoon at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Blythewood Baptist Church, 101 Bass Road, Blythewood, SC 29016.

Mrs. Broom died Friday, August 20, 2004. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, she was a daughter of Jay Hinson and the late Daisy Rhodes Hinson. After high school in Jacksonville, she moved to Columbia and attended the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing from which she graduated with a degree in nursing. She worked briefly as a registered nurse at Midlands Center and then taught school at Palmetto Baptist Academy while her children attended. Mrs. Broom and her husband had long attended Blythewood Baptist Church.

Survivors include her father, Jay Hinson of Fayetteville, NC; her husband, M. Douglas Broom; five children, Faye Broom of Cincinnati, Dusty (Veda) Broom of Blythewood, Renee Carpin of Blythewood, Cyndi (Bill) Burrell of The Woodlands, TX, and Sandra Dee (John) Christmus of Blythewood; 10 grandsons and four granddaughters; siblings, J.C. (Roberta) Hinson of Waynesville, NC, Karen (Edward) Jarman of Fayetteville, Linda Jones, Walter (Shirley) Hinson of Columbia, and a sister-in law, Mrs. Judson (Belinda) Hinson of Greenville, SC. Mrs. Broom was preceded in death by one brother, Judson Hinson.

Jimmie Pelfrey Sr.

LEXINGTON — Services for Jimmie Pelfrey, Sr., 70, will be held at 4 pm Monday in Lighthouse Baptist Church, conducted by Reverend J.R. Harmon, with burial at Southland Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Ronald J. Swearingen, Reese Brunson, III, Bobby M. Swearingen, Ernest “P.D.” Baughman, Joseph E. Swearingen, Sr., and Leonard Stukes. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class of Lighthouse Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lighthouse Baptist Church Youth Ministry Program, 325 Church St., South Congaree, SC 29172. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Sunday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington.

Mr. Pelfrey died Saturday, August 21, 2004. Born in Oconee County, he was a son of the late William Arthur and Bertha Vinson Pelfrey. A resident here 47 years, Mr. Pelfrey was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church and was a retired self-employed contractor. He was also a Mason.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Gerrie Williams Pelfrey of Lexington; sons and daughter-in-law, Mike K. Pelfrey of Lexington, Jimmie Pelfrey, Jr., of Lexington, and Gerald A. and Janice R. Pelfrey, of Lexington; 3 sisters; and the apple of his eye, his granddaughter, Sara Pelfrey.

Thomas Shumate Sr.

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Thomas Laverne (Tommy) Shumate, Sr. age 63, who died Aug. 21, will be held Monday at 3:00 pm from the Chapel Norton Funeral Home. Revs. Burney C. Hinson & Don Childers will officiate. Burial will be in the Magnolia Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday 6-8 pm at the Funeral Home.

Tommy was born in Darlington Co. a son of the late Johnny & Blanche Gainey Shumate. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co., member Old Timers Club, retired from the National Guard and was an Air Force Veteran.

Surviving are his wife: Jo Ann Jacobs Shumate, Hartsville; Daughter: Tonya (Brent) Blackwell, Hartsville; Son: Thomas L. Shumate, Jr., Hartsville; Sisters: Minnie Louise Walters, Hartsville, Joyce Jacobs, Rockingham, N.C.; Grandchildren: Wes & Jacob Blackwell, Hartsville.

Memorials may be made to Hartsville Northern League at P.O. Box 853, Hartsville, S.C. 29550.

Bruce Crouch

PROSPERITY — Services for Bruce C. Crouch, 55, will be conducted at 3 PM Monday at Glory Tabernacle. Burial will follow in the Koon family cemetery. McSwain-Evans Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Crouch died August 20, 2004. Born in Columbus, IN, he was a son of Charles L. and Joan Huffer Crouch. He was a retired heating and air technician and an Army Veteran. He attended Glory Tabernacle

Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife Virginia Glymph Crouch; a step-son, Phil Greenberg and his wife, Mary, of Pomaria; a step-daughter, Marsha Christian and her husband, Dave, of Grand blanc, MI; sisters, Monica Groomes of Summerville, Anita Risher of Jacksonville, FL, Rita Floyd, Angela Logert of N. Charleston, Brenda Smith of New York, Mary Benton of St. Mary’s, GA, Barbara Crouch of Holly Hill; brothers, Mark Crouch of Cincinnati, OH, Tim Crouch of Columbia, and Pat Crouch of Summerville, and 7 grandchildren; Ashley Greenberg, Corey Crowe, Michael Greenberg, Sam Greenberg, David Christian, Jr., Kiara Christian, and Megan Christian.

Thomas Youngblood

SUMTER — Thomas Douglas “Tommy” Youngblood, Jr., 68, died Saturday, August 21, 2004 at his home.

Born is Sumter, he was a son of Anna Blackwell Youngblood and the late Thomas Douglas Youngblood, Sr.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and had retired from S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation after 30 years of services.

Survivors besides his mother of Sumter include two sisters, Joanne Barnes and her husband, Bobby H. Barnes and Carol Fournier and her husband, Gabriel Fournier, all of Sumter; nieces and nephews, Joanna Barnes, Jean Ann Sims, John Fournier, and Hall Barnes, all of Sumter; a grandniece, Kelly Sims of Sumter; aunts and uncles, Janie Blackwell and Mr. and Mrs. Wallace G. Tibodeau, all of Maysville, and Bill Blackwell of Camden.

Graveside services will be held at 3 PM Monday in the Mayesville Black River Cemetery with Rev. Brian Peak officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 9 West Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of arrangement.

Joseph Statham

BUFORD, Ga. — Joseph Lamar Statham, age 72, of Buford, GA, died Friday, August 20, 2004. Mr. Statham was born in Greene County, Ga., to Joe Little and Willie Mae Statham. He was a graduate of Greensboro High School where he was captain of the high school football team. Mr. Statham served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner’s mate during the Korean War and received the Conduct Ribbon; the Korean, United Nation’s and China Service Medals; and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. He was employed with Southern Bell for 23 years as a Technician in Special Services. He moved to Williston, S.C. in 1978 and purchased and managed the Villa Motor Inn hotel, restaurant and apartments for the following 26 years. He was a valued member of the Williston community and was a member of the United Methodist Church, Lion’s Club and the Masonic Hope Lodge.

Mr. Statham was an avid fisherman and sports enthusiast and was known for his sharp wit and keen sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey A. Stratham of Buford, Ga. and Williston, S.C.; son and daughter-in-law, the Reverend Stanley L. and Tracy Stratham of Franklinton, La.; daughters, Terri Brown of Lawrenceville, Ga., Kim Windle of Buford, Ga., and Pam Price and Teresa Zellner of Hoschton, Ga.; grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Dail (Adrienne); Brooke Windle; and Jonathan, Joseph, Katheryn and Megan Statham; son-in-law, John Brown of Lawrenceville, Ga.; sister, Lois Edwards of Buford, Ga.; F. Brown Windle, father of Brooke Windle, Pasadena, Calif.; and Ron Zellner, father of Adrienne Dail, Buford, Ga.; and many loving nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.

Mr. Statham was preceded in death by former wife, Patricia Strickland Stratham of Gainesville, Ga.; mother, of Terry Brown and Stanley Statham.

The family will receive friends on Monday, August 23, 2004 from 6-8 PM at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 24 at the Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow in Hamilton Mill Memorial Gardens, 3481 Hamilton Mill Road, Buford, Ga., 30519. The family request donations be made to Peachtree Christian Hospice, 3430 Duluth Park Lane, Duluth, Ga., 30096.
