Cecil Caldwell

LEXINGTON — Cecil Maffett “C.M.” Caldwell was born in Pomaria, SC on July 16, 1919. He was the third of eleven children born to Robert Middleton Caldwell and Anna Viola McCollum. He met Margaret Louise Ringer in 1936, when his family moved across the street from hers. She was often at the house playing with his younger sisters, but he really noticed her for the first time at her mother’s funeral in 1937. They began dating a few years later, and were married, May 9, 1943. Fifty-two years later, they both agreed it was worth the wait.

Margaret died from cancer in 1995. Her unexpected death was hard on the whole family, but Cecil later admitted that nothing was harder than living alone. A few years later he began dating Betty Mae Free of Columbia. They met at Beacon Baptist Church in Lexington. She had been widowed for thirteen years. Cecil and Betty were married February 13, 1999. Right before the ceremony, he said “she’ll no longer be Free!”

A World War II veteran, Cecil was very proud of his military history. He was an Army Corporal in the 4th Infantry Division, 44th Field Artillery and Battalion, and 22nd Combat Team. He fought in Belgium’s Battle of the Bulge and his division was the first to enter and liberate Paris in 1944 after landing at Utah Beach. He is listed on the Wall of Liberty at Normandy Beach, France.

In 1946 he earned an Electrical Engineering degree from Coyne Electrical Institute in Chicago. He later returned to Lexington as an electrician for Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative, where he retired after twenty-nine years. He could build and fix anything. He knew the names of every tree, bird and flower that grew in the 114 acres surrounding his country home. He loved to garden. He loved to hunt, with a long list of good dogs at his side. When birds built their nests in his tool bins or tractor, he left then undisturbed until they moved out. He made the best homemade ice cream in the world.

No matter what the weather, he always worked in his pine green long-sleeved button down shirts from the Co-op, with his name embroidered on the front. He collected guns, gadgets, Shirley Temple movies and silly baseball caps. One of his favorites read: “This is MY cap. Everything else is hers.” He loved to sing, whistle, make faces and tell stories. He was never too busy to stop and help someone. He taught his family to trust God, to never give up, to love each other, to be thankful and to pray. They are trying to do that now, while remembering this gentle, funny, brilliant, caring man who has been their Rock for so many years.

C.M. Caldwell is survived by many friends and loved ones, including his wife, Betty; sons, Steve and Roger; daughters, Sharon Satterfield, Miriam Caldwell and Judy Carey; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Caldwell; sons-in-law, Patrick Satterfield, and Bill Carey; granddaughters, Allison Caldwell, Dinah Satterfield and Hope Satterfield Lee; grandsons, Brandon, Kevin, Craig and Kyle Caldwell; great-grandchildren, Taylor, MacKenzie and Wyatt Caldwell; brother, Alton and sisters, Ruby Wicker, Mable Peake, Antoinette Wicker, Violet Coker, Pearl Eddings and Betty Rhodus. He was predeceased by his brother, John and sisters, Ellen Mills and Emily Bogan.
