Sumter, S. C.

Heppie Respess Hill, 84, widow of Luther Martin Hill, died Saturday, August 23, 2003 at a local nursing facility.

Born in Pike Road, N.C. she was a daughter of the late Arthur Respess and Mary Ellen Cutler Respess.

Mrs. Hill was a member of the Rivermont Church of Christ in Chester, Va.

Surviving are one son, Martin R. Hill of Minneapolis, Minn.; two daughters, Wanda Rohrer of Miami, Fla. and Cynthia H. Jolly of Sumter; three sisters and four grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be held Chester, Va.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C., 29210.

Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Julia Louise McKenzie McClam Moore

1914-2008

Julia Louise McKenzie McClam Moore, 94, widow of Robert Mellette Moore Jr., died Saturday, July 12, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston.

Born in Lake City, she was a daughter of the late Johnny McClam and the late Nettie Anderson McClam.

Mrs. Moore was a member of High Hills of Santee Baptist Church and a former member of the Lake City Garden Club.

Surviving are six grandchildren, Hayden Donehue Shook, John Douglas Donehue Jr., Teresa Donehue Quimby, Marilyn Donehue Small, Anne Donehue Hall all of Charleston, and Robertson Carr Donehue of Three Rivers, Michigan; five great-grandchildren, Palmer Quimby, Kathleen Quimby, Curtis Small, Andrew Shook and Julia Shook.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Sylvia McKenzie Donehue and Dinah Ray McKenzie.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M Monday in the High Hills of Santee Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Hunter officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Bernice M Hoffpauir

1928-2003

Sumter, S. C.
Bernice M. Hoffpauir, 74, died Tuesday, August 26, 2003 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Waco, Texas , she was a daughter of the late Lloyd S. Blackmon, Sr. and the late Marie Mitten Blackmon.

Mrs. Hoffpauir was a member of Shaw Heights Baptist Church where she had previously served as a GA Director and member of the choir. She also founded the church library and served as its Media Director for 25 years. She was a retired Chief Telephone Operator for the 2020 Communications Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base. She was chosen as Regional Outstanding Technical Employee in 1978 and the Technical Information Systems Division honored her as Chief Operator of the year in 1984.

Surviving are a daughter, Terry S. Newman of Sumter; a son, Richard L. Hoffpauir of Lawton, Oklahoma; a brother, Lloyd S. Blackmon, Jr. of Oklahoma City, Ok.; two granddaughters, Shyra Marie Wilferd of Columbia and Jessica P. Wilson of Sumter; two great-grandsons, J. Bailey Wilferd of Columbia and G. Hunter Wilson of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Guy Courtney Jones.

Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. Saturday at Alice Drive Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Clay Smith officiating.

Burial will be in Zoar Community Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, 600 N. Magnolia Street.

Hugh "Monk" Alexander Mathis, Jr.

1930-2008

Hugh “Monk” Alexander Mathis, Jr., 78, widower of Shirley Preast Mathis, died Monday, July 14, 2008 at the Veterans Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.

Born in Nashville, Tennessee, he was a son of the late Hugh Alexander Mathis, Sr. and the late Olin Hancock Mathis.

Mr. Mathis was a retired U. S. Air Force veteran and served in Korea and Vietnam. He was also a retired Detective with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. He was a lifetime member of the DAV, a former president of the SC Chapter DAV, and a former Legislative Chairman of the SC-DAV. He was also a member of the SC Sheriff’s Association.

Surviving is a brother, Charles Mathis of Summerton; a special niece, Dory Nobles of Sumter; a special nephew, Hugh Robert Miller of Summerton; his sister-in-law and caretaker, Lillie Hill of Sumter; three grandchildren, Donnie White, Scotty White, and Sheryl White; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Ann Barwick.

Graveside services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday in the Sumter Cemetery with Chaplain Ernest Stroud officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Wednesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1295 Shoreland Drive.

Malon "Hank" Snider, Sr.

1936-2008

Malon “Hank” Snider, Sr., 71, widower of Mary Ann Turner Snider died Sunday, July 13, 2008 at his home.

Born in Mayo, Florida, he was the son of the late John Snider and the late Effie Rebecca Jackson Snider.

Mr. Snider was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, a U.S. Air Force veteran and was a retired driver for Blue Ridge Transfer Company. He also delivered the Sumter Daily Item for over 30 years.

Surviving are his son, Boone Snider and his wife Tracie of Sumter; a daughter, Cindy Marshall and husband Danny of Sumter; a brother, Andrew Jackson Snider of Florida; four grandchildren, Sheri Marshall Euten, Casey Nicole Snider, Danny Marshall, Jr. and Cody Allen Snider;two great-grandchildren, Michael Galloway, Jr. and Bailey Ann Euten.

Mr. Snider was preceded in death by six brothers, John Russell Snider, William Ralph Snider, Henry Ellis Snider, Edwin Ray Snider, Zackie Levy Snider and Thomas Gregory Snider; a sister, Avis Rebecca Snider and a granddaughter, Kendal Faith Snider.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Stokes and the Rev. Charles Ahtonen officiating.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dalton Baxley, Eddie Holloway, Frank Miller, Grady Carraway, Doug Cox and James Shipman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Cody Allen Snider and Michael Galloway, Jr.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1820 E. Brewington Rd.

Delmar Avery "Smitty" Smith

1936-2008

Delmar Avery (Smitty) Smith, 71, husband of Janice Norvell Smith, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Whitley City, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Fred Bryant and the late Roberta Vanover Bryant.

Mr. Smith was a member of Green Acres Assembly of God Church and was retired from the Chrysler Corporation.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; two sons, Steven J. Smith of Sumter, Brian A. Smith of Edinburgh, IN; a daughter, Carla D. Smith of Sumter; a brother, Lowell Dean Bryant of Fairfield, OH; two sisters, Kay Bray of Cincinnati, OH, Anna Jones of Whitley City, KY; 9 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Jerry Bryant.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Friday at Green Acres Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating.

Burial will be in Kokomo, Indiana.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday at Green Acres Assembly of God church and other times at the home, 2850 Millstone Drive.
