Alan Michael Edwards

JOHNSTON — Alan Michael Edwards, 11, passed away Jan. 31, 2001, at Whitten Center Hospital.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of Larry Nelson and Tammy Lynn Rankin Edwards. He was a former member of Good Hope Baptist Church Sunday School.
Survivors include his parents and maternal grandparents, Curtis and Cornelia Rankin.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park.
Visitation is from 6:30-8:30 tonight at Bland Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Alan Edwards Trust Fund, First Citizen’s Bank, Johnston, or to a charity of one’s choice.
Bland Funeral Home is in charge.

Benjamin F. Etheredge

BATESBURG-LEESVILLE — Benjamin F. Etheredge, 61, of 120 Lee St., passed away Jan. 27, 2001.
He was a son of the late Joe and Frances Perry Etheredge.
Survivors include two daughters, Priscilla Etheredge of Gastonia, N.C., and Frances Etheredge of Kings Mountain, N.C.; four sisters, Elizabeth Stroman of Batesburg-Leesville, Frances Thomas of Bamberg, Ollie Putnam of Ward and Clara Johnson of Perry, Fla.; a brother, Luther Etheredge of Englewood, N.J.; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Saturday at R.O. Levy Home for Funerals, with burial in St. John CME Church Cemetery.

Bruce A. Frye

LEESVILLE — Bruce Athel Frye, 78, husband of Emaline F. Frye, passed away Jan. 30, 2001.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late Julian and Estelle O. Frye. He was owner and operator of Frye’s Grocery, West Columbia, for 20 years, served in the Marines and had completed Holmes Theological Seminary. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and of Moose Lodge 3462 for more than 30 years.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Teresa F. Waters of Leesville; four sons, Marion Frye of Leesville, Darrel Frye of Middleburg, Fla., Charles Fields of North and Robert Fields of Bradenton, Fla.; two sisters, Naomi F. Bedenbaugh of Joanna and Andrea F. Posey of Gilbert; three brothers, Maurice Frye of Lexington, Milton Frye of Leesville and Atwood Frye of Gilbert; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 Friday at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington, with burial in Celestial Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Marion Scott Frye, Brooks Edward Frye Jr., Josh Frye, Claude Shealy, Tracy Fields and Jody Harmon.
Honorary pallbearers are members of the Loyal Order of Moose.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Holly Memorial Christian Fellowship Building Fund, Highland Avenue Pentecostal Holiness Church, 309 Youman St., Batesburg, S.C. 29070.
Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington, is in charge.

Devern ‘Monk’ Graham

SALUDA — Devern “Monk” Graham, 47, passed away Jan. 30, 2001, at Newberry County Hospital.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late Yammassee Graham and James Abney. He was a retired employee of the Town of Saluda and a member of Peaceful Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Esther Rhodes of Saluda; and two brothers, Onemuis Dean Graham and David Graham, both of Saluda.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Raymond Adams at 1 Friday at Lockhart Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are cousins and friends of the family.
The family is at the home of his sister, Mrs. Johnny (Esther) Rhodes, 310 Rocky Creek Road, Johnston (Saluda County).
Butler and Sons Funeral Home is in charge.

Matthew ‘Big Matt’ McCarson

MARIETTA — Matthew “Big Matt” McCarson, 26, of 107 Linda lane, husband of Brenda Reilly McCarson, passed away Jan. 30, 2001, at his home.
Born in Greenville County, he was a son of Bobby and Betty McCarson. He worked in construction and was a member of the NASCAR Club and the Old Fashioned Baptist Church, Travelers Rest.
Survivors include his parents; his wife of the home; a daughter, Brianna Gail McCarson; a sister, Dee Dee Cantrell of Marietta; three brothers, Robbie King of Greenwood, Todd McCarson of Marietta and Conrad McCarson of the home; and maternal grandmother, Lucille “Nanny” Darnell of Marietta.
Services will be at 11 Friday at The Howze Mortuary, with burial in Grand View Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 6-9 tonight at the mortuary.
The family is at the home.

Geraldine E. Patterson

COLUMBIA — Geraldine Eaddy Patterson, widow of Joseph Crider Patterson, passed away Jan. 30, 2001.
Born in Johnsonville, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Olin and Nina Carson Eaddy. She was a first grade teacher for 43 years. She was a former state president of the Association for Childhood Education, teacher of the year, and member of Alpha Delta Kappa and Kappa Kappa Iota teacher sororities and the Eau Claire Music Club. She was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church, where she was a pianist for the Goodwill Sunday School Class and a member of the choir.
Survivors include a son, Joseph C. “Pat” Patterson III of Charlotte; a daughter, Susan P. VonNessen of Columbia; two sisters, Audrey Eaddy Parsons of Greenwood and Nella Rae Eaddy Faircloth of Charlotte; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 today at Shandon United Methodist Church, with entombment in Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Shandon United Methodist Church.

Nannie Lou Pope

GREENWOOD — Nannie Lou Pope, 60, of 704 Sweetwater Road, Lot 12, passed away Feb. 1, 2001, at her home.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Melvin and Louise Deal Pope. She was a former seamstress with Eastwell Sportswear and a member of Morris Chapel Baptist Church, where she was a former church secretary, Sunday school teacher and member of the Baptist Training Union. She was a member of the Eastern Star and a member, parliamentarian and treasurer for Brewer High School Class of 1959.
Survivors include two sons, Roderick Pope of Spartanburg and Michael Wendell Pope of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Gretta Louise Pope) Wright of Greenwood and Ingrid Arlene Pope of the home; a brother, Bobby Pope of Greenwood; two sisters, Mabel Bunter of Washington , D.C., and Ida Nell Cain of Greenwood; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Robinson and Son Mortuary Inc, which is in charge.

Gertrude Clark Redd

AIKEN — Gertrude Clark Redd, 89, widow of Shuler Redd, passed away Jan. 30, 2001 at Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Effie Asbill and Benjamin Tillman Clark. She retired from Graniteville Co. with 43 years of service and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Daphne Redd Roberson of Aiken; and a grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 1 today in Bethany Cemetery.
Shellhouse Funeral Home is in charge.

Ellie Dorn Reese

COLUMBIA — Ellie Dorn Reese, 92, widow of Robbie H. Reese, passed away Jan. 30, 2001.
Born in McCormick, she was a daughter of the late Robert B. and Sallie Briggs Dorn. She graduated from Winthrop College and received a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. She taught for 42 years in South Carolina and Georgia schools, retiring from Richland School District 1. She was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school.
She was the last member of her immediate family.
Services will be at noon today at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to North Trenholm Baptist Church or the South Carolina Episcopal home at Still Hopes.

John G. Riddick

COLUMBIA — John G. Riddick, 82, husband of Mollie H. Riddick, passed away Jan. 30, 2001.
Born in Athens, Ga., he was a son of the late John Gatling and Connie Moss Riddick. He was educated in Greenwood public schools and at the University of the South, Sewanee. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a foreign service officer of the Department of State from 1940-49, in London Johannesburg and Hanoi. From 1949-58, he was manager of the Chamber of Commerce in Albemarle and Goldsboro, N.C. He worked with the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce from 1958-80, serving as executive director from 1962-80. After retirement from the chamber, he became executive director of the S.C. Restaurant Association. He was a volunteer at Providence Hospital for 10 years and a member of St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, the Lions Club, Palmetto Club and Spring Valley Country Club.
Survivors include his wife; a son, John G. Riddick III of Charleston; two brothers, Patrick H. Riddick of Columbia and Walter E. Riddick of Aiken; and two grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 3 Saturday at St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church.
Visitation is from 6-7:30 Friday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street.
Memorials may be made to St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church or a charity of one’s choice.

Lola P. Turner

GREENWOOD — Services for Lola P. Turner, of 107 McAdams Road, will be conducted by the Rev. W.H. McCain at 2 Saturday at Springfield Baptist Church, Edgefield. Burial will be in Evening Star Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at noon.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are members of Living Word Tabernacle of Faith.
The family is at the home.
Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge.

William Woodyard Jr.

HODGES — William Howard Woodyard Jr., 67, passed away Feb. 1, 2001, at Aiken Regional Medical Center.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, Greenwood, which is in charge.
