Jennie Ruth Hawthorne
ABBEVILLE — Jennie Ruth Harrison Hawthorne, 82, of 106 Henry Street, widow of Edgar T. (Ed) Hawthorne passed away Sunday, December 2, 2001 at her home.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late James Pinckney and Lena Ouzts Harrison. She was a homemaker and a member of Greenville Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. Surviving are one son; James Arthur Hawthorne of Abbeville, two daughters; Janice Ann Young of Abbeville and Marlene H. Banes of Greenwood, one sister; Ouida F. Harrison of McCormick, five grandchildren; James Michael Young, Jennifer Ann Young, Stephanie Banes Gandee, Thomas Weston Hawthorne and Charles Robert Hawthorne. She was predeceased by two brothers.
Funeral services will be 2:30 P.M. Tuesday at Greenville Presbyterian Church with Dr. George Wilson and Rev. Ray Massey officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Abbeville.
The body is at Harris Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7-9 P.M. Monday. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday. The family is at the home.

Bud Hilley
GREENWOOD — John Davis “Bud” Hilley, 76, of 213 Sagewood Road, husband of Katherine “Kit” Walker Hilley, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Oscar A. and Vesta Hilley Hilley. He was the meat market manager for Winn-Dixie and was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of South Greenwood Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he was a member of the choir and served as an usher.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are two sons, Steve Hilley and Keith Hilley, both of Greenwood; a sister, Rachel Blum of Greenwood and two grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Tuesday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Johnson and the Rev. James Young. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Leon Massey, Johnny Rhodes, Dewit Pressley, Tim Stewart, Michael Hilley, Jimmy Still, Ed Watkins and Phillip White.
Honorary escorts are members of the Men’s Bible Class of South Greenwood Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Visitation is from 6:30-8:30 tonight at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

James McElhannon, Jr.
HODGES — James F. McElhannon, Jr., 50, of 116 Brittany Court, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2001 at Jones Gap State Park, Marietta, SC.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of Joyce Fitzpatrick McElhannon and the late James F. McElhannon, Sr. He was a 1969 graduate of Greenwood High School and was employed by Eaton (Cutler-Hammer). He served four years in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam Conflict and served as Scout Master of Cub Scout Pack #906 and Unit Leader of Boy Scout Pack #313. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Denise McElhannon.
Surviving is his mother of Greenwood; a son, James F. “Jamie” McElhannon, III of Greenwood; a brother, Kenny McElhannon of Greenwood; a sister and brother-in-law, Carol & Howard McCoy of Greenwood; his girlfriend, Melody Bouknight of Hodges; nieces, Julie McCoy and Teresa McCoy, both of Greenwood; cousins, Pat Hardy, Evelyn McElhannon and Diana Feltman, all of West Union and his former wife, Diane McElhannon of Greenwood.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Olin E. Hightower and the Rev. Jim Manley officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Daroll Norris, Caroll Norris, Alan Norris, Bryan Moore, Robert White and Ricky Higginbotham.
Honorary escort will be members of Boy Scout Pack #313 along with Jack Miller, Rick Wilson, Marty Manley, Don Salter and Roy Schumpert.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
The family is at the home of his mother, 115 Frances Street.
Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Greenwood Chapter or to the Pediatric Oncology Department of Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, #7 Richland Medical Park, Columbia, SC 29203. Harley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mac Quattlebaum
SALUDA — Services for Hunter Mac Quattlebaum, 82, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with burial in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the Mac Quattlebaum Gymnasium of Hollywood Elementary School. Ramey Funeral Home is in charge.
Mr. Quattlebaum, a member of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2001. Born December 12, 1918, in Newberry County, he was the son of the late Mac and Merle Hunter Quattlebaum of Prosperity. He graduated from Newberry College, where he played baseball, in 1939, and later continued his education at Clemson University, the University of Georgia, and the University of South Carolina.
Mac Quattlebaum began teaching and coaching at Hollywood High School in Saluda County in 1939. Coach Quattlebaum began coaching the boys’ basketball team in 1939 and continued to coach the boys until 1965, winning District Championships in 1953, 54, 55, and 56.
In 1943, he took over the girls’ team and coached them until Hollywood High School consolidated with Saluda High School in 1974. Coach Quattlebaum then continued to coach middle school basketball at Hollywood until his retirement in 1981.
The successes Coach Quattlebaum had with his girls’ teams are indeed impressive. His record of 550 wins against only 150 losses ranks him the 4th winningest girls’ basketball coach in State history. His girls’ 92 game consecutive winning streak ranks 5th best in State history. His teams had 348 victories from 1946 through 1958 on their way to winning two CSRA Tournament Championships, nine Upper-State Championships and seven State Championships.
Hollywood’s seven State Championships ties them for the 3rd most in State history. Coach Quattlebaum was named State Coach of the Year in the early 1950’s and coached in the 1958 South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association’s All-Star game.
On May 18, 1997, the Hollywood Community recognized and honored Coach Quattlebaum as they dedicated and named the gymnasium at Hollywood Elementary School Mac Quattlebaum Gymnasium.
He was inducted in the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in July 2000.
Mr. Quattlebaum was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Saluda County Retired Teachers Association, and served Saluda County’s youth as the co-ordinator of Teen Town from 1965-1970.
Surviving are his wife Eileen McDowell Quattlebaum; daughters and sons-in-law, Sara Lee and Russell Shealy of Clemson, Kim and George Wilbur Hopkins of Saluda; son, Fred Quattlebaum of Columbia; grandchildren, Tucker and Brittany Shealy and Hunter Hopkins; and a special family friend Barbara Doyle Crumley of Greenville.

Henry Steifle
GREENWOOD — Thomas Henry Steifle, 78, of 212 Elizabeth Ave., husband of Bertha McKinney Steifle, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare.
Visitation is from 7-8:30 Monday at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, which is in charge.

William Walter Timms
GREENVILLE — William Walter Timms, of Botany Woods passed away Sunday, December 2, 2001.
Born in Belton, he was the son of the late James Harrison and Carrie Lee Morgan Timms. He retired after 50 years from Life Insurance Co. of Virginia as District Manager and was a certified Life Underwriter. He was a past member of the Board of Directors of Senior Action of Greenville, a member of First Baptist Church where he taught the Fellowship Sunday School class for 30 years and a deacon. He also served in the US Army during WWII in the European Theater.
Surviving are his wife, Rachel Strickland Timms; a daughter, Mrs. William G. (Carolyn) Godsey, Jr. of Simpsonville; four sisters, Mrs. Herman (Nora) Martin, Mrs. John (Thelma) Rice, Mrs. Colie (Addie Jean) Hedgepath, and Mrs. John F. (Hattie Ruth) Shirley all of Belton; a brother, Dr. Delbert Timms also of Belton and two grandchildren, William Kenneth and Karen Timms Godsey.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jeff Rogers and Dr. Baxter Wynn officiating. Visitation will be held in the church narthex from 10:00 a.m. until the service time.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to Seniors Ministry at First Baptist Church, 847 Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC 29601.

William Roy Byrd
NINETY SIX — William Roy Byrd, 76, husband of Margaret Tucker Byrd, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Richard M. Campbell VA Nursing Home in Anderson.
Born in Rock Hill, he was a son of the late Robert O. and Mamie Mangum Byrd. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in Bastogne, Belgium, during the siege of December 1944. He attended the University of South Carolina and re-enlisted in the Air Force in 1950, retiring in 1968. He also retired as a U.I. Field Supervisor with the S.C. Employment Security Commission in 1985. A Master Mason with York Lodge No. 358, Rock Hill, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Ninety Six.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, William R. Byrd Jr. of Keller, Texas and Robert C. Byrd of Mount Pleasant; a daughter, Anne B. McKellar of Greenwood; four sisters, Louise Masselink of Indiana, Melvenia Hollis of Great Falls, Mary Hamilton of Rock Hill and Betty Jo Rauch of Lancaster, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia, by the Rev. Robin Fisher.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at 111 Ashley Oaks Lane, Ninety Six.

Willie P. Holmes
GREENWOOD — Willie P. Holmes, 78, of 507 Marion St., passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Percy and Janie Holmes. He was a truck driver and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include a sister, Cleola Franklin of Greenwood.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc., which is in charge.

Jonah E. Lancaster
CAMPOBELLO — Jonah Elias Lancaster, 21, of 835 Old Melvin Hill Road, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001.
Born in Georgia, he was a son of Terry Wayne and Kathy Jo Morris Lancaster. An artist, he graduated from Ninety Six High School and attended Spartanburg Tech.
Survivors include his father of Spartanburg; his mother of Campobello; a brother, Aaron Lancaster of Honolulu; and paternal grandparents, Carl and Margaret Lancaster of Spartanburg.
Services will be conducted at 8 Wednesday at Eggers Funeral Home, Boiling Springs, by the Rev. Curt Jones and Mr. Johnny Beheler. Burial is private.
Visitation is from 6-8 Wednesday at the funeral home.
The family is at 2144 Chesnee Highway, Spartanburg.

Vivian Lawson
GREENWOOD — Vivian Louise McElroy Lawson, 69, of 114 Billee St., wife of George Robert “Bobby” Lawson, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at National Health Care in Clinton.
Born in Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Jesse Daniel and Emma Lou Spence McElroy. She retired from Greenwood Mills, Adams Plant.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a daughter, Mrs. David (Louise) Fernandez of Greenwood; four sons, Jesse “J.T.” Holloway of Bradley, J.R. Holloway of Lexington, Larry Wayne Holloway of Danielsville, Ga., and Ricky Eugene Elgin of Kings Mountain, N.C.; two brothers, James McElroy of Athens, Ga., and Earl McElroy of Greenwood; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 2 Wednesday at Harley Funeral Home by the Rev. David Wells. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are grandsons.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Henry Steifle
GREENWOOD — Thomas Henry Steifle, 78, of 212 Elizabeth Ave., husband of Bertha McKinney “Bert” Steifle, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare.
Born in the Bradley community of Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Neil and Josephine Chiles Steifle. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and a World War II Army veteran. He retired from Greenwood Petroleum Co. and was a member and deacon of Cedar Springs Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Gregg Steifle of Greenwood; a brother, Smith Steifle of Bradley; and two grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Blyth Funeral Home by Dr. Loyd Melton and the Rev. Thomas Cartledge. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Neil Steifle, Danny McKinney, Ralph Still, Thomas Brooks, Jones Buchanan, Robert McIlvain, Roy Dellinger and Milton Ridlehoover.

ABBEVILLE — Thelma Ramey Taylor, 87, of 1318 Cedar Springs Road, widow of Tom Woodrow Taylor, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Lee and Bertha Edmunds Ramey. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Anna Ramey Baker of Abbeville; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 3 Wednesday at Harris Funeral Home by the Rev. Darren Hook. Burial is in Little Mountain Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

David ‘Murray’ Bell
DONALDS — David “Murray” Bell, 72, of 818 Ellis Road, husband of Dorothy Washington Bell, passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of Lillie Bell Kay. He was retired from Chiquola Textiles. He attended Campfield Baptist Church, where he was a trustee. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 100.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home is a son, David W. Bell Jr. of Freemont, Calif.; four daughters, Patricia Dianne Hagood and Dorothy J. Brownlee, both of Donalds, Rena Cassandra Linton of Greenwood and Janice L. Chiles of Columbus, Ga.; a sister, Rena Coleman of Abbeville; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son Mortuary, Greenwood, which is in charge.
