Lt. Col. Retired Gregory John Renko

1949-2006

Gregory John Renko, (LTC. Ret.), 56, husband of Diane (Dee) Hollingsworth Renko, died Saturday, January 14, 2006 at MUSC in Charleston, S.C.

Born on July, 16, 1949 in Duluth, Minn. He was a son of the late George Renko and Jessie Huntsinger Renko.

Mr. Renko was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter and was a graduate of the Air Force Academy in 1973. He was a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Air Force after 25 years of service where he was a former navigator and retrained as a pilot . He flew A-10 at Myrtle Beach AFB, OV-10 at Sembach AB, GE; F-16 stationed at Kunsan AFB, Korea, McDill AFB, two tours at Shaw AFB, one with 9AF Stan-Eval, last 9AFIG, from which he retired. He also trained in the A-7 and served a tour with the AF Reserve training at Warner Robins AFB. He was a member of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Works, National Skeet Shooting Association, S.C. Skeet Shooting Association and Command Bar Stool Association.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of MUSC and to the Life Point Organ Procurement Team that assisted in organ donation.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; one daughter, Kelly C. Renko, one son, Matthew J. Renko both of Sumter; one sister, Renee Harmon of Henderson, NV.

Memorial Services will be held at 3 PM Monday at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter with the Rev. Mark Riggs officiating.

Private burial will follow at a later date.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the Parish Family Life Center at the church.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St. is in charge of the arrangements.

Benjamin and Madeleine Richardson

Graveside services for Benjamin Perry Richardson and Madeleine Thompson Richardson will be held at 1 P.M. Saturday May 7, 2005 at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross Cemetery at Stateburg with Rev. Dick Archer officiating.

Born February 19, 1915 in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Richard C. Richardson and Martha W. Perry Richardson. Mr. Richardson died February 4, 2005.

Born January 2, 1917 in Hines, California, she was a daughter of the late John Alfred Thompson and Bertha I. Mentzer. Mrs. Richardson died November 25, 1997.

Surviving are two sons, Benjamin Perry Richardson, Jr. of Charlotte, N.C. and John Alfred Richardson of Portland, Oregon; and a daughter, Carolyn Richardson Hagen, of Magalia, California. In addition, Mr. Richardson is survived by a brother, Deas Richardson of Spartanburg, S.C.; two sisters, Mary Northcutt of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and Norvelle Gozdziewski of Lynchburg, S.C.

Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Historic Preservation Trust, in care of Mrs. Amelia B. Harper, 2161 Gion Street, Sumter, SC 29150-5904.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad Street, Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

Vivian Steiniger

ROCK HILL — Services for Vivian Scaramuzzini Steiniger, 73, widow of Herman Steiniger Sr., are 10 a.m. Thursday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Green Funeral Home, Downtown. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., to Pasquali and Angelina Scaramuzzini, she died Nov. 9, 2004. Surviving: children, Michael Steiniger, Lynn Collins, Cathy Stornelli; siblings, Pasquali Scaramuzzini, Angie Immitti, Catherine Clemment; others.

John Moody

SALTERS — John Fleetwood Moody, 71, died Wednesday, November 3, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Moody was born March 10, 1933, in Lake City, a son of the late Walter Scott and Leila Covington Moody. He was a graduate of The Citadel with Master’s Degrees from the University of South Carolina and Francis Marion University. Fleetwood was a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, where he was a helicopter and fixed-wing pilot. He served in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded two Bronze Stars in Vietnam and 15 Air Medals. He also held a 3rd degree black belt in Karate. Lt. Col. Moody was the author of The Black Bishop. He was a member of Union Presbyterian Church and Friends of the Library.

Fleetwood is survived by his daughters, Maxine Moody Poston and her husband, Dr. Hal Poston, of Flat Rock, NC, Laura Jean Moody Reed and her husband, Alan C. Reed, of Greenville, SC; his five grandchildren: Elizabeth Jean Poston of Los Angeles, CA, Eric Chalmers Poston and Lane Strom Poston of Flat Rock, NC, Mitchell Alan Reed and Philip Ashley Reed of Greenville, SC; his former wife, Margaret Strom Moody of Greenville, SC.

Also surviving are his three brothers, Lide Moody (Geneva) of Lake City, Bill Moody (Rebecca) of Dillon and Lee Ray Moody (Betsy) of Walterboro; a sister, Laura Ellen Moody of Charleston, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Furman Children’s Chorus or the Boys Choir of the Carolinas, 31 Crestline Road, Greenville, SC 29609.

Benjamin Piper

COLUMBIA — Services for Benjamin I. Piper will be held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the First Nazareth Baptist Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Mr. Piper will be placed in the church at noon for viewing. Visitation will be held at the King’s Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery Street, Chester today from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and in the Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Piper was born in Chester, South Carolina on December 26, 1941 to the late Benjamin and Maggie F. Piper. He graduated from Finley High School and furthered his education at the Southeastern Business College in Durham, North Carolina. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army. After his military service, he returned to Columbia, South Carolina where he was employed with the Southern Voters Project and became an insurance agent with the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1963 he became employed with the Leevy’s Funeral Home. He served as General Manager of the funeral home from 1977 to 1983 and again from 1994 until 2004.

Surviving are his loving and devoted wife, Patricia Young Piper; three daughters, Annette (David) Underwood, Linda Camps, and Crystal N. Piper; four sons, Benjamin Piper, Jr., Gregory Fleming, Trevis Fleming, and Earl Hunter; sisters, Willie Mae Brown and Rosa P. Edwards; one brother, Joe Davis; eleven grandchildren; father-in-law, Deacon James Young; one sister-in-law, Mary Ann Brown; four brothers-in-law, James Young, Jr., Richard (Jeannie) Young, Wilbert (Yvonne) Young, and William Edwards; other loving relatives and friends.

Ora Blake

NEW YORK — Services and burial in S.C. for Ora Lee Howze Blake, 84, formerly of Edgemoor, S.C., are 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion AME Church #1; viewing 3-9 p.m. today & 9 a.m.-noon Thursday at King’s Funeral Home, Chester. Born in Chester Co. to Lee and Jessie S. Howze, she died Nov. 4, 2004. Surviving: children, Della Westbrook, Gene, William Blake; stepsons, Robert, Bryant Blake; 4 sisters.

Roberta Blanding

SUMTER — Services for Roberta Denise Blanding, 43, noon Thursday (viewing 11 a.m.) at Salem Missionary Baptist Church; burial in Beulah AME Church Cemetery. Job’s Mortuary is in charge. Born to Robert Sr. and Barbara F. Blanding, she died Nov. 5, 2004. Surviving: parents; children, Crystal, Michael, Hope, Keshawn; siblings, Rhonda, Lydia, Ronald, Robert Jr., Gregory Blanding, Cassandra Dinkins.

Doris Bledsoe

JOANNA — Services for Doris Shaver Bledsoe, 70, widow of William Bledsoe, are 3 p.m. Thursday at Joanna Church of God; burial in Pinelawn Memory Gardens. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Gray Funeral Home, Clinton. Born in Joanna to Ervin and Leona B. Shaver, she died Nov. 8, 2004. Surviving: children, Danny Bledsoe, Kathy Bilbrey; siblings, Irene Mayfield, Rev. Louis, Glen Shaver; grands, Missy, Brandy.

Chong Choe

COLUMBIA — Memorial services for Mrs. Chong Cha Lee Choe, 66, of Columbia, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 12, 2004, in the Chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home, with Pastor Joon Won Kang officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park Northeast. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until 1 noon, and from 6:00 P.M. until 10:00 P.M. A Memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home at 8:00 P.M. Thursday.

Mrs. Choe died Monday, November 8, 2004. Born on November 11, 1937, in South Korea, she was a daughter of the late Young Ki Lee and Young Im Moon Lee. She had been a resident of Columbia since 1987. Mrs. Choe was a member of Columbia Presbyterian Mission Church and was a housewife.

Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Chun Ho Choe of Columbia; four daughters, Haa Suk Kessler of San Roberts, Mo., Chu Yon Livingston of Columbia, Hyun Chue Lim, and Jae Hyun Choi both of South Korea; a son Kuk Chin Choe of Elgin; three sisters; two brothers; seven grandchildren; four nieces; and three nephews.

Sanford Lawson

CLINTON — Services for Sanford “Joe” Lawson, 54, former employee of Shaw Construction Co., will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Gray Funeral Home. Born in Clinton to Sybil Kidd Osborne and Elbert Lawson, he died Nov. 8, 2004. Surviving are wife, Sheila Murrell Lawson; sons, Shannon, Jason Lawson; mother; brother, Billy Osborne; five grands.

Arthur Roberts Sr.

BRUNSON — Services for Deacon Arthur “Boggie” Roberts Sr., 87, are 11 a.m. Thursday at Second Baptist Church, where he was a member; burial in Grounder Cemetery, Gifford; wake 6-8 tonight at Riley’s Funeral Home, Hampton. He died Nov. 6, 2004. Surviving: wife, Louvenia Roberts; children, Mark, Annette, Deloris; siblings, Blanche, Joanne, Fredericka, Joseph, William, Gloria; grands; great-grands.

Louise Peak

COLUMBIA — Louise Peak, 77, died November 9, 2004. Ms. Peak will be inurned in Rock Hill at a future date. Born in Chesterfield, she is survived by a sister; a brother; several grandchildren and nieces. Greenlawn Funeral Home is in charge.

Born in Easley to John and Nellie McCauley Leonard, he died Nov. 8, 2004. Surviving: wife, Patsy McCauley; children, Mare McCauley, Ginger Sasser; grands, Lindie, Lee Cunningham, Jay, Jennifer Sasser, great-grand, McCauley Sasser; stepbrothers and sisters.

Gary Lewis

DARLINGTON — Services for Gary Watson Lewis, 65, are 11 a.m. Thursday at Belk Funeral Home; burial at 2 p.m. in Lake City Memorial Park, Lake City. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at 101 Oakview Drive.
