Mrs. Sauls, widow of Shellie H. Sauls, died Tuesday, November 9, 2004. Born in Pelion, she was a daughter of the late Lucius and Vila Chavis Jeffcoat. Mrs. Sauls, a lifetime resident, was a member of Westside Holiness Church.
Surviving are her daughters, Patti Kobliski of Blythewood, Elaine Thomas of Irmo, Jackie Bruce of Gaston, Dawn Tarlton of Gilbert, Deidra Livingston of West Columbia; son, McRoy Sauls of Birmingham, AL; sisters, Lenora Chavis of Columbia, Brenda Hill of Gaston; brothers, Thurmond Jeffcoat of West Columbia, Dillard Jeffcoat of Gaston, Rev. J.E. Jeffcoat of Cayce, Maxie Jeffcoat of Gaston; grandchildren, Jamie Brindel, 2nd Lt. Josh Brindel, Jack Brindel, Sheldon Salas, Robbie Collins, Chrissie Collins, Blaire Kobliski, Shellie Sauls; and great grandchildren, Brittany, Tiffany, Sheldon, Shellie and Brent.
Mrs. Sauls was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah Lynn Sauls; a sister, Sylvia Brazell; and brothers, Alvin, Ronnie and Rudy Jeffcoat.

GEORGETOWN — Services for Benjamin Alston, 76, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel AME Church, Plantersville Community, with burial in Bethel AME Church Cemetery. CHARLOTTE — Services for Russell Lee Ballard, 95, widower of Lucille Ballard, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday (1 p.m. visitation) at Westmoreland Baptist Church; burial: Forest Lawn Cemetery. James Boatwright Jr.
JOHNSTON — Mr. James Ernest Boatwright, Jr., 82, of McQueen St., died Tuesday November 9, 2004, at his residence.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Johnston Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Friday November 12. The family will receive friends at the home following the service.
Mr. Boatwright was the son of the late James Ernest Boatwright, Sr. and the late Harriett Graham Boatwright. He was born in Monetta, S.C. and attended Sewanee and The Citadel. He was a retired Realtor and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a WWII veteran, a member of The American Legion Post #133 and a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of the Johnston Sertoma Club and a member of the Johnston United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Eddie Boatwright; 2 sons, Jim Boatwright, Charleston, and George Boatwright, Cave Creek, AZ; 2 stepdaughters, Ellen Courtney, Johnston, Sally Faust, Edgefield; 1 sister, Averill B. Courtney, Johnston; 1 brother, Philips Boatwright, Ridge Spring; and 3 grandchildren and 4 stepgrandchildren.

Mrs. Bruce died Wednesday, November 10, 2004. Born in Camden, she was the daughter of the late Barney and Mattie Ruth Copeland Langley. Mrs. Bruce retired as the Activities Director of the A. Sam Karesh Longterm Care facility at Kershaw County Medical Center, past president of the Pilot Club and a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Alex Bruce; children, Cheryl B. Lee and her husband, Patrick, of Orangeburg, Robert Phillip Bruce of Boynton Beach, FL, and Jon Bruce and his wife, Gina, of York; grandchildren, Jason and his wife, Jessica, and Rebecca Lee, Jonathan Bruce, II, Ryan Bruce, Alex and Darby Bruce; sisters, Margie Rabon of Lugoff, and Brenda Stevens of Camden. She was predeceased by a daughter, Sonya Bruce, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
George Fricks Sr.
COLUMBIA — Services for George W. Fricks, Sr., 88, will be held Saturday at 12 noon at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with entombment in Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be 11-12 prior to the service at the funeral home. Honorary pallbearers will be former Gov. James B. Edwards and Col. George D. Patterson, U.S. Army (Ret.). Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of one’s choice.
Mr. Fricks died Tuesday, November 9, 2004. Born in Rossville, Ga., he was the son of the late George Alex and May Roberts McFarland Fricks. He was a graduate of Berry College in Rome, Ga., and received his Masters degree from Peabody College in Nashville, TN. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corp (C.C.C.), and was a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy during WWII. Former Governor Strom Thurmond bestowed upon him the title, “Honorary Colonel.”
Mr. Fricks was the first principal at Columbia Area Trade School, now Midlands Technical College. He retired from the Charleston County School District as principal of Stall High School. He was a lifetime member of Sinclair Masonic Lodge #154, West Columbia, and was a member of Omar Shrine Temple in Charleston. He was a member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church.
An avid gardener, he had a keen interest in plants and wildlife. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Ruby McLeod Fricks; son, George W. Fricks, Jr. and his wife, Gail of Chapin; grandchildren, Tammy Wilson Barnes and her husband Andy of Lexington, and Jessica Wilson of Philadelphia, PA.; and great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Riley Barnes. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Kathryn Bradley, and half-sister, Jewel Rudicil.
