Sprott Calhoun
GREENWOOD — Sprott Puett Calhoun, 80, of 624 Calhoun Road East, widower of Elizabeth “Lib” Clark Calhoun, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Robert Turner and Juanita Sprott Calhoun. He was a graduate of Ninety Six High School. He was a World War II Navy veteran, having participated in the invasion of Normandy. He served in the Navy Armed Guards. He was a retired farmer and a member of Siloam Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Katherine C. Ware and Julie C. Duncan, both of Greenwood and Robbie C. Woodard of Hodges; two sons, Michael Calhoun of Anderson and John Calhoun of Meridianville, Ala. and 10 grandchildren.
Services are at 2 today at Blyth Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Steven Crittendon. Burial is in Bethlehem Cemetery at Coronaca.
Pallbearers are nephews.
Honorary escorts are Bobby Stoudemire, Ed Nixon, Milton Berry and James Neil Calhoun.
Visitation is from 1-2 today at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

WARE SHOALS — Edna Pressley Emerson, of 12 Sparks Ave., widow of Joseph Edward Emerson, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late R.P. and Lou Emma Jones Pressley. She was a member of Ware Shoals United Methodist Church and was retired from Riegel Textile Corp.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Hobart (Lucille) Gowan; a grandchild; a great-grandchild and a great-great-grandchild.
Services are at 1 Monday at Parker-White Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Gayle Summey. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 12-1 Monday at Parker-White Funeral Home.

Daisy Jennings
McCORMICK — Services for Daisy Alma Jennings, of New Hope Road, widow of Joe Jennings, will be at 2 Tuesday at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Plum Branch, conducted by the Rev. W.H. McCain and the Rev. Otis Cunningham. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Pallbearers are grandsons.
Flower bearers are granddaughters.

GREENVILLE — Helen Owings White Mullen, 96, formerly of Titusville, Fla., widow of Curtis Mullen, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at National Health Care in Greenville.
Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at Blyth Funeral Home.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, Greenwood, which is in charge.

Pauline L. Schofield
LAURENS — Pauline Lollis Schofield, 88, of 3784 Neely Ferry Road, widow of Howard A. Schofield, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Laurens County Hospital.
Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late James E. and Sara Martha Ridge Lollis. She was a homemaker and member of Union Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Lothridge of Laurens; a son, Jerry Schofield of Laurens; a brother, Ralph Lollis of Laurens; two sisters, Vera Cathcart of Laurens and Esther Dunaway of Clinton; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are at 2 today at Union Baptist Church Cemetery, with visitation after the service.
The family is at the home of Paula Gilstrap, 3740 Neely Ferry Road.
Memorials may be made to Community Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, 100 Heaven’s Gate Lane, Ware Shoals, S.C. 29692.

Jerry W. Ward
DONALDS — Jerry Walter Ward, 77, of 2711 Sam Hodges Road, husband of Eula Mae Wheeler Ward, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at his home.
Born in Princeton, he was a son of the late James Franklin and Bertha Davis Ward. He was retired from the Adams Plant of Greenwood Mills, where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was a World War II Air Force veteran and a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; four sisters, Annie Mae McFerrin and Sarah Franklin, both of Greenwood, Clara Williams of Batesburg and Mary Southerland of Abbeville County; two brothers, Joe Ward and Leroy Ward, both of Greenwood; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Monday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Rodney Jeanes, the Rev. Steve Justice and the Rev. Craig Hughes. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Brian Ward, Mike Ward, Raymond Massey, Johnny Pardue, Jimmy Ward and Billy Ray Ward.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

Jack Whelchel
GAFFNEY — Jack Whelchel, 71, of 218 Webster Road, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at his home.
Born in Cherokee County, he was a son of the late Napoleon “Poley” and Grace Lovelace Whelchel. He was retired from Brown Packing. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Love Springs Baptist Church in Cowpens.
Survivors include two brothers, John Whelchel of Gaffney and Ned Whelchel of Greensboro, N.C. and three sisters, Mary W. Reid of Greenwood, Willie W. Collins of Glendale and Mildred W. Phiffer of Spartanburg.
Graveside services are at 3 today at Draytonville Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Robert Woodyard and the Rev. Paul Reid, with visitation after the service.
Pallbearers are Bryson Parris, John Parris, David Reid, Wayne Phillips, Lee Parris, Thomas Mayfield, Danny Mayfield and Mike Sherman.
The family is at the home of John Whelchel, 650 White’s Road, Gaffney.

Emily Worley
ELBERTON, Ga. — Emily Adams Worley, 88, of 2688 Calhoun Falls Highway, widow of Elbert L. Worley, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Elbert Memorial Hospital.
Born in Elbert County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Robert Ernest Adams Sr. and Sara Ethel Smith Adams. She was a homemaker and member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte W. Williams of Abbeville and Kathy Worley of Elberton; a son, Denver Worley of Elberton; two sisters, Mary Lee Bell and Frances A. Edwards; a brother, Horace Adams of Elberton; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services are at 4 Monday at Berry Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Alvin Taylor and the Rev. Adrian Bell. Burial is in Forest Hills Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are Mark Nash, Waymon Worley, Curtis Mabry, Henry Bell, Steve Adams and Brent Adams.
Visitation is from 2-4 Monday at Berry Funeral Home.

Lt. Col. Maurice M. DePass
Dothan, Alabama - Lt. Col. Maurice Mitchell DePass, 86, of 1517 Oak Drive, Dothan, died Monday, March 11, 2002 at Flowers Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 11 am, Thursday, March 14, 2002 at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity with Reverend David Powell and Rev. John Mark Wiggers officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 until 7 pm Wednesday.
A native of Darlington, South Carolina, Col. DePass graduated high school from Bailey Military Academy in Greenwood, South Carolina and attended Clemson University, University of Maryland, and Jacksonville State University. Col. DePass retired from the U.S. Army "Artillery" after 30 years of service, having served two tours in Europe, two in the Far East, Panama Canal Zone, and South America. He was highly decorated for his service to his country and was a recipient of numerous medals to include the Bronze Star for Valor and two Purple Hearts.
After retiring from active duty, he organized and served as senior ROTC instructor at Dothan High School for ten years. He was instrumental in many of his students receiving appointments to the service academics and scholarships to universities.
Col. DePass was a lifetime Episcopalian having served in many capacities including Sunday School Superintendent and senior warden. He was a member of the Nativity. He was also a member of the Dothan County Club, Rotary Club, VFW, the retired Officer's association, Alabama Education Association, and an honorary Kentucky Colonel.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Evelyn Nickles DePass, Dothan; two daughters, Ms. Gail M. DePass of Dothan and Mrs. William T. (Carole) Hale and son-in-law, Bill, of Cumming, Georgia; two granddaughters and spouses, Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Morgan and Mr. and Mrs. Chris Willis, both of Cumming, Georgia; five loving great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Dothan Rotary Club and the "Hackers" golf group of the Dothan Country Club.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Col. Bill Hause, Col. Harrison Christy, Greg Unger, Ken Lane, Jimmy Tindell and Dr. Press Thornton.

Louise D. Harrison
TROY — Louise D. Harrison, widow of Efford Harrison, died Monday, March 11, 2002, at her home.
Born in Troy, she was a daughter of the late Perry and Pearl Dowtin Drennon. She was a member of Glovers Chapel Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Willing Workers Club and the Women’s Home Aide Society No. 77.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Frances Hall of Troy; a son, James Harrison of McCormick; an adopted son, Chris Ware of Augusta, Ga.; a brother, Freddie Wideman of Laurens; two grandchildren of the home, Angela Harrison and Janet Harrison; a great-grandchild reared in the home, Rochelle Harrison; eight other grandchildren and seven other great-grandchildren.
Services are at 1 Friday at Glovers Chapel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. M.L. Taylor, pastor, and the Rev. Aaron Woodward. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon.
Pallbearers are nephews, and flower bearers are nieces.
Honorary escorts are members of the Women’s Home Aide Society.
Visitation is from 7-8 Thursday at Walker Funeral Home.

Ella Hembree
WARE SHOALS — Ella Edmonds Hembree, 93, of Martha Franks Retirement Center, formerly of 29 Circle St., widow of Marvin M. Hembree, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Laurens County Hospital.
A native of Banks County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late David and Amanda Burrell Edmonds. She was a member of Ware Shoals Church of God of Prophecy and a retired employee of Riegel Textile Corp.
Survivors include two sons, Berlin Hembree of Ware Shoals and Hoyt H. Hembree of Greenwood; a daughter, Lucille H. Morrell of Ware Shoals; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Thursday at Ware Shoals Church of God of Prophecy, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Roy Suggs, the Rev. Dr. Marcus Bishop, the Rev. George Leagans and the Rev. Stephen Christopher. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Lamar, Marcus and Byron Morrell, David and Larry Hembree and Robert C. Vaughn.
Honorary escorts are Dr. John Holman, John Medlin, Jesse Samples, Melvin Morrell and the staff at Martha Franks Retirement Center, Station 1.
Visitation is from 12:30-2 Thursday at the church.
Family members are at their respective homes.
Memorials may be made to Ware Shoals Church of God of Prophecy Building Fund.

Rev. William A. Johnson
GREENWOOD — The Rev. William Anthony Johnson, of 230 E. Cambridge Ave., Apt. 107, Cambridge Apartments, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Carmenta “Candy” Johnson, 105 Barley Drive, Wheatfield Subdivision.
Services will be announced by Parks Funeral Home.

John McTighe
GREENWOOD — John J. McTighe, 83, of 102 Morningside Drive, husband of Anna Thompson McTighe, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002 at Richard M. Campbell Veteran’s Nursing Home in Anderson.
Born in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Peter and Lillian Muzio McTighe. An Army veteran, he served as a captain during World War II in Europe. He retired as an insurance broker for Marsh & McLennan in Pittsburgh and was the past city commissioner of Rehoboth Beach, Del. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, The Retired Officers Association and the VFW.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, John McTighe of Harrisburg, Pa.; two daughters, Patricia McTighe of West Minister, Md., and Karen Hermele of Colorado; two stepdaughters, Carol Chastain and Janet Bartie, both of Greenwood; a brother, Paul McTighe of Pittsburgh; six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, conducted by Father Richard Harris.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 110 E. Laurel Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29649 or the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, 60 Bay St., Staten Island, N.Y. 10301.
