Beth Hunter
GREENWOOD — Elizabeth "Beth" Davis Hunter, 97, former resident of Hampton House, widow of William Carlisle Hunter, died September 17, 2002 at Magnolia Manor.
Born in Lanette, AL, March 27, 1905, she was a daughter of the late Nimrod Hampton and Lillian Willoughby Davis. She was formerly employed by Main Street United Methodist Church in the children's day care program and later worked with other day care facilities in Greenwood.
Mrs. Hunter was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where she served as nursery keeper for many years.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Hunter and husband Eugene M. Belkowski of New Brighton, PA and Virginia Hunter Cronic of Greenwood; a sister, Margaret Davis Shannon of Greenwood; grandchildren, Scott Hunter Cronic, Richard William Cronic, both of Greenwood; Carlisle Eugene Belkowski and Timothy Andrew Belkowski, both of New Brighton, PA; Beverly Anne Belkowski of Pittsburgh, PA and Michael Joseph Belkowski of Freedom, PA; fourteen great-grand-children.
She was predeceased by an infant son, Benjamin Carlisle Hunter; two sisters, Mattie Mae Davis Rush and Myra Davis Douglas; a brother, Nimrod Hampton Davis, III and a grandson, Richard Hunter Belkowski.
Funeral services will be conducted 3PM Thursday at Main Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Patty Griffith-Fallaw officiating.
A private family burial will be in Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 2PM Thursday.
The family is at the home of Douglas and Margaret Shannon, 505 Kirksey Drive and will receive friends in the church parlor from 2 to 3 Thursday afternoon.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, 211 N. Main Street, Greenwood, SC 29646 or to St. Mark United Methodist Church, 550 Hwy. 72 By-Pass NW, Greenwood, SC 29649.

Larry W. Maxwell
WARE SHOALS — Larry Wayne Maxwell, 63, of 52 Dairy St., husband of Bonnie E. Maxwell, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in Wilkes County, Ga., he was a son of the late Morrison Lee and Mary Ann Poss Maxwell. He was Mayor Pro-Tem of the Ware Shoals Town Council and also served on the council from 1989-94. Working in forestry for 30 years, with Continental Can and Federal Paper Board, he retired from International Paper Co. He was a member of Ware Shoals First Baptist Church and Ware Shoals Lions Club and a former member of Ware Shoals Athletic Association.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Bill Maxwell of Iowa City, Iowa; three daughters, Donna Maxwell of Anderson, Karen Maxwell of Ware Shoals and Laurie Maxwell of Kalamazoo, Mich.; two brothers, Morrison Lee and Corrie L. Maxwell, both of Wilkes County, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Friday at Ware Shoals First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Floyd Parker. The body will be placed in the church at 2. Burial is in Oakbrook Memorial Park, Greenwood.
Pallbearers are Brian Walsh, Ray Copelan, Toby McAlister, Jimmy Bell, Lee Murph and Dr. Darby Pendergrass.
Honorary escorts the Town of Ware Shoals employees; members of Ware Shoals Town Council and former council members with whom he served; members of his Sunday School class; along with Grant Duffield, Tommy Davis, Don Boling, Sonny Dean, J.E. Cooper, Howard Branyon, Clarence McMahon, Jake Davis, Ken McAlister, Roger Brock.
Visitation is from 6:30-9 tonight at Parker-White Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Ware Shoals First Baptist Church Building Fund.

Leslie Leroy Rhodes
ABBEVILLE — Leslie Leroy Rhodes, 48, of Hilton Head, formerly of Abbeville, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002 at his home.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late Robert and Hattie Frazier Rhodes. He was a graduate of Abbeville High School and a member of Long Cane A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include a sister, Linda R. Cunningham of Hilton Head and a brother, Ronnie Rhodes of Atlanta.
Services will be announced by Brown and Walker Funeral Home.

Chesley Rushton
SALUDA — Chesley Rushton, 69, of 208 S. Jennings St., widower of Martha Jean Rushton, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 at his home.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late James “R. Lee” and Mamie DeLoache Rushton. He retired from the South Carolina Department of Transportation and was a member of Saluda Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Mack (Freda) McCutcheon of Lake City, Marcia Rushton of Lexington and Denise Rabon of Saluda; two brothers, Jimmy Rushton of Saluda and Clem Rushton of Greenwood; a sister, Grace Goodman of Saluda; and four grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. today at Saluda Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Norman Rogers. Burial is in Travis Park Cemetery.
Visitation is from 1-2:30 today at the church.
Memorials may be made to Saluda Nursing Center, P.O. Box 398, Saluda, SC 29138.

Robert ‘Bob’ Searles
CHICAGO — Robert “Bob” Searles, 73, husband of Ruth Searles, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 in a Chicago hospital.
Born in McCormick, S.C., he was a son of the late Lonza and Viola Patterson Searles. He was a former member of Springfield A.M.E. Church, McCormick and lived in the Chicago area for about 50 years.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Marvin Searles and a daughter, Lynnetta S. Adams, both of Markham, Ill.; two sisters, Alfredia Harris of Bronx, N.Y., and Mildred Frambrough of McCormick; three brothers, James C. Searles of McCormick, George U. Searles and George Parker Searles, both of Washington , D.C.; and three grandchildren.
Services and burial are 10 a.m. Monday in Chicago.

Allonia H. Tompkins
McCORMICK — Services for Allonia Holloway Tompkins are 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ivary Goodwin, pastor. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are friends of the family.
The family is at the home of a brother, George Holloway Jr., Mims Drive, McCormick.

Johnnie C. Bland
Johnnie C. Bland, 78, husband of Lela Mae Ouzts Bland, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002 at his home.
Born in Edgefield County, he was a son of the late Freddie and Mary Moore Hudson. He retired from Monsanto and was a Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife of the home.
The family is at the home is at the home of a nephew, Wallace Lewis, 444 Oak St., Greenwood.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home.

Nettie Sue Brown
BELTON — Nettie Sue Fricks Brown, 58, of 212 Breazeale St., wife of Jimmy C. Brown Sr., died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002 at her home.
Born in Ware Shoals, she was a daughter of the late Clyde L. and Irene Tinsley Fricks. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Pleasantview Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, J.C. Brown of Honea Path and Chris Brown of Lavonia; a daughter, Rebecca Phillips of Hickory Tavern; two sisters, Nancy Campbell of Ware Shoals and Polly Pope of Ninety Six; a brother, Mark Fricks of Simpsonville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasantview Wesleyan Church, Williamston, conducted by the Revs. Herbert Taylor and Johnathan Payne. Burial is in the Garden of Memories, Belton.
The body will be at the home after 5 p.m. today, where visitation is from 7-9 tonight.
Memorials may be made to Pleasantview Wesleyan Church, 109 Sunset Drive, Belton, SC 29627.

Sheldon Culbertson
Sheldon Wyatt Culbertson, 27, of 6737 Peter Pan Place, Jacksonville, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002 in Atlantic City, N.J., from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of Lewis Culbertson and Grace Anderson Sheffield. He attended Ware Shoals High School and was a construction worker. He had attended First Baptist Church of Ware Shoals.
Survivors include his father of Ware Shoals; his mother and stepfather, Bobby Sheffield, of Jacksonville; a sister, Beth Culbertson of Jacksonville; his maternal grandmother, Eva Anderson of Shoals Junction; and his paternal grandmother, Frankie Culbertson of Ware Shoals.
Services are 3 p.m. Saturday at Harley Funeral Home, with burial in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of an uncle, Eddie Young, 220 Utopia Acres, Greenwood.

Ruth Guest Douglas
Cynthia Ruth Hawkes Guest Douglas, 91, formerly of 103 Milford Springs Road, widow of William Douglas, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002 at Magnolia Manor.
Born in Commerce, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Willis and Minnie Bolden Hawkes. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church. She was twice married, first to the late Lester Conway Guest.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann Guest Keisler of Gainesville, Ga.; a son, Larry M. Guest of Waterloo; a stepdaughter, Joan D. Williams of Ninety Six; a stepson, James “Sonny” Douglas of Chappells; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services are 8 p.m. tonight at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Paul Reid and Eddie Burt.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Elmhurst Cemetery, Elberton, Ga.
Visitation is from 7-8 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of a granddaughter, Leilani Reid, 213 Kenilworth Drive, Greenwood.

Ruby Dove
GREENWOOD — Ruby Beatrice Voyles Dove, resident of Presbyterian Home in Clinton and formerly of 104 Woodcrest Drive in Greenwood, died September 18, 2002.
She was the widow of Jasper Monroe "Jack" Dove with whom she celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary a few months before his death in 1981.
Her greatest accomplishment was being the mother of five daughters. They are Joann Virginia Dove Gray (Mrs. Coy) of Greenwood, Patricia Mae Dove Ellis (Mrs. Jerry) of Camden, Grace Jacqueline "Jackie" Dove Puckett of Myrtle Beach, Myrna Lee Dove Franklin (Mrs. Ben) of Charlotte and Nancy Beatrice Dove Crews (Mrs. Arthur) of Albany, GA.
She grew up in Anderson, one of eight children, all now deceased, of Amos Jackson and Ella Cheek Voyles. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenwood and the Durst WMU Group. For several years she assisted with the Mothers' Morning Out Program.
Five grandsons and five granddaughters affectionately called her "Ma Ma". They are Susan Dove Ellis Sweet of Charlotte, Pattie Ann Ellis Arnold of Advance, NC, Coyann Gray Lee of Clemson, William Harling Puckett, III of Georgetown, Jasper Dove "Jack" Puckett of Greenville, Geralyn Ellis Donnalley of Summerfield, NC, Beatrice Jacqueline "Bea J" Crews, who predeceased her in December 2000 at age 27 and Charles Jefferson "Jeff" Crews of Birmingham, AL. Eleven great-grandchildren also survive.
Throughout her life she gave devoted service to her family and was much loved by those who knew her.
Graveside services will be held in Greenwood Memorial Gardens on Saturday, September 21, 2002 at 11 o'clock conducted by Dr. J. William Harris.
Following the service the family invites you to a reception at Angelos to celebrate her life.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Mary B. Jackson
HODGES — Mary B. Jackson, 85, of 520 Nation Road, widow of Woodrow W. Jackson, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002 at her home.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late John Will Butler Sr. and Ida Anderson Butler. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church, where she was president of the deaconess board for more than 20 years, a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Women’s Missionary Society. She was also a member of Dunn Creek Order of the Eastern Star No. 194.
Survivors include a son, Freddy Jackson of Enoree and a grandson.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Good Hope Baptist Church, Hodges, conducted by the Rev. Stanley Haltiwanger, pastor. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are church deacons and trustees.
Flower bearers are church deaconesses and missionaries.
The family is at the home of a nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Jackson, 106 Bell Road, Donalds.

Fannie Neal
NORTH AUGUSTA — Fannie Neal, of Anne Maria Nursing Home, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002 at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
Born in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Wash and Carrie Caldwell Speaks. She was a former member of Coronaca Zion Baptist Church.
Survivors include a brother, John Henry Speaks of Greenwood and two sisters, Emma Heard of Washington , D.C., and the Rev. Bessie Williams of Greenwood.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Parks Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Johnathan Green, assisted by the Rev. Guy Ross. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are friends of the family.
Visitation is from 7-8 tonight at the funeral home.
Family members are at their respective homes.
