Richard P. Felder Sr.
Richard Peters Felder Sr., 95, husband of Luella Horton Felder, died Friday, December 14, 2001, at National Health Care.

Born Dec. 18, 1905, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late William Eli and Annetta Thomas Felder. He was a farmer in Summerton for more than 50 years and was a member of Summerton Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He also was a Trustee of Clarendon County School District 1; a former Clarendon Soil and Water District Commissioner; a member of the Central Production Credit Association Board of Directors in Sumter, former Chairman was the Administrative Board of Summerton United Methodist Church of Summerton Presbyterian Church, and a 1927 graduate of Clemson College.

In 1958, the Felders were named Farm Family of the Year.

Survivors besides his wife of 67 years of Summerton include a son, R.P. “Dickie” Felder Jr. and daughter-in-law, Lulie Eaddy Felder, of Summerton; three grandchildren, R.P. “Rick” Felder III and Elizabeth “Betsy” Felder McDonald of Columbia, and Watson E. Felder of Clemson; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amy Simmons Felder.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Summerton Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Jody Foster and Barry Jenkins officiating.

Pallbearers were Jack Horton, W. E. Horton, Percy Harvin, Charles Felder, Gene Failmezger, John Horton and Harold Windham.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Presbyterian Church or to the Amy Simmons Felder Memorial Fund.

Herman Pearson
Herman Pearson, 81, widower of Mattie Smith Pearson and husband of Juanita Nicholas Pearson, died Thursday, December 6, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born April 20, 1920, in the Freetown community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Willie and Easter Waiters Pearson. He attended White Oak Community School and in his youth, joined White Oak AME Church. After moving to Englewood, N.J., he joined Ebenezer Baptist Church. After retiring, he moved back to Manning and attended Mount Chapel Baptist Church. He was a retired machine operator for Faber Cement Block Co. of Paramus, N.J.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include a daughter, Nancy Adams and her husband, Samuel, of Manning; three stepdaughters, Narlin Poke of Patterson, N.J., Margaret Obi of East Orange, N.J., and Patricia Nicholas of Charleston; six stepsons, Marvin Nicholas of New York, N.Y., Lawrence Nicholas of Atlanta, Ga., Algred Nicholas and Eugene Nicholas of Patterson, N.J., and Earl Coleman of Charleston; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and a number of step-great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Lewis W. Walker Jr., pastor, officiating, and the Revs. Sam Miller, Patrick Mellerson, O’Donald Dingle and Evangelist Rebecca York assisting.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

James L. Tucker
James Luther Tucker, 52, died Monday, December 10, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late William James Tucker and Rotha Mae Richburg Tucker. He was a heavy construction equipment operator.

Survivors include a daughter, April Denise Tucker of Summerville; two brothers, Tommy Tucker of Pinewood and Michael Tucker of Sumter; four sisters, Laura Sims of Sumter, Shirley Bryant of Manning, Emma Joyner of Alcolu and Geraldine Puckett of High Point, N.C.; and a grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dan Richburg.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday in June Burn Cemetery in Manning with the Revs. Buddy Griffith, Carl Miles, Cecil Tucker and Dan Helvey officiating.

Melvin Wilder
Melvin “Doot” Wilder, 78, husband of Estelle Conyers Wilder, died Sunday, December 9, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 16, 1923, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Paul and Dovie Pringle Wilder. He attended Clarendon County public schools and in his youth, joined Calvary Baptist Church. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was later employed with Jackson Farms as a helper.

Survivors besides his wife include five sons, Melvin Wilder Jr., Ervin Lee Wilder, Jimmy Wilder, Bobby Wilder and Winfield Wilder of Pinewood; three daughters, Joan W. Canty, Shirley Wilder and Betty Logan of Pinewood; a sister, Bessie Ragins of Cross; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood with the Rev. E.L. Sanders, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Wallace Epps
Wallace “Coon” Epps, 66, husband of Rutherlee Hudson Epps, died Friday, December 14, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 17, 1935, in the St. Mark community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Willie James Epps and Gracie Tomlin Epps. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Harmony Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon until his health failed. He was a retired employee of Campbell Soup Co. of Sumter.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include four sons, Julius Michael Epps of Atlanta, Ga., Detric Epps and Franklin Epps of Columbia and Ronnie Epps of Alcolu; four daughters, Jacqueline Woods and Doris Felder of Manning, Gwendolyn Harris of Charlotte, N.C., and Ruthie Harris of Miami, Fla.; six brothers, Lewis Epps, Eli Epps, Isiah Epps, James Epps and Charles Epps of Alcolu and Willie Tomlin of Baltimore, Md.; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bubba Epps, Bennie Epps and Frank Epps; and three sisters, Elouise Epps, Lou Ethel and Lizzie Canty.

Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday at Harmony Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Carnell Hampton officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Wattola J. Garner
Wattola Juel Dawson Garner, 93, widow of Jesse T. Garner, died Tuesday, December 18, 2001.

Born in Knoxville, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Avery Glenn and Wattola Sarratt Dawson. She was a Charleston Navy Yard employee during World War II, outfitting ships for launch. After the war she was a practical nurse in Kershaw County and later opened her own Interior Decorating Business. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Madge Black Strickland of Manning; a son, Walter “W.C.” Bowen Jr. of Gaston; a sister; 12 grandchildren, Terry, Larry, Tony, David and Daniel Strickland, Leon Jr. and Kenneth Black, Cindi Kocki, Tina Morgan, Jamie and Walter Charlie Bowen III; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Julian Leon Black; two sisters, Ruth Kelly and Hanson Dawson; and two brothers, Floyd Dawson and Bevis Dawson.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Baptist Church with the Revs. Kenneth Jackson and Terry Strickland officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Anna S. Marshall
Thursday, December 13, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 28, 1919, near Manning, she was the daughter of the late Ed and Louisa Postell Smith.

She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she was mother of the church, past president of the Senior Missionary Society, member of senior choir and former Sunday school teacher, as well as being active in both the Greater Friendly Union and the Christian Fellowship Association. She did domestic work in the community for most of her life.

Survivors include a daughter, Glendell P.A. Mayfield of New York, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Christine Howard and her husband, Johnny, of Bronx, N.Y., and Mary Louise Singleton and her husband, Alvin, of Sumter; five sisters, Louise Conyers and Lois Smith of Silver, Bessie White of Sumter, Willie Mae Glisson of Philadelphia, Pa., and Lillie Mae Pearson of Baltimore, Md.; several nieces and nephews, the Rev. Vermelle Humes, Deloris Davis and Yvonne Carter of Sumter, and Harrell, Irvin and Sammie Marshall of Mayesville; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. O’Donald Dingle officiating.

Burial followed in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Ellen F. Barr
Mary Ellen Frye Barr, 73, wife of James Daniel Barr Jr., died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at Providence Hospital.

Born in Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie E. Frye and Mamie Marie Beard Frye. She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include a son, James Terry Barr of Sumter; a daughter, Linda Diane Ard of Alcolu; two brothers, Carlye Frye of Timmonsville and Charlie Odell Frye of Georgetown; two sisters, Carrie Mae Hudson of Manning and Ruby Mae Altman of Johnsonville; and five grandchildren, Dana Ard Stoia, Charlton Will Ard, Amy Blair Ard, Cory Daniel Barr and Courtney Barr.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. The Revs. Reese Miles and Ed Hanna officiated.

Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 2609 McCrays Mill Road, Sumter, S.C. 29154.

Virginia L. Bass
WINTHROP, Mass. -- Virginia Lorayne Bass, 56, died Tuesday, January 1, 2002, in Manning.

Born Aug. 9, 1945, in Florence, she was the daughter of the late David Harris Bass and Mary Kathleen Haseldon Bass. She was a retired nurse, a manager of Ocean Spray Inc. in Winthrop, Mass., and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Florence.

Survivors include dear friends, Dr. and Mrs. Ray and Phyllis Langston of Manning; Jennifer Wright and her husband, Jerry, of Lancaster; Jay Langston of Clemson and Allen Langston of Annapolis, Md.; Sara Jane Wessinger of Winthrop, Mass.; Don and Elena Barlett of Winthrop, Mass.; and Dr. and Mrs. A. R. Smythe of Columbia.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny R. Bridges officiating.

Burial followed in Hope Cemetery in Florence.

Titus Baker Jr.
Titus “Junior” Baker Jr., 64, husband of Ernestine Cubit Billups Baker, died Tuesday, December 25, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 25, 1937, in New Zion, he was the son of the late Titus Baker Sr. and Verneshia Butler Baker.

He attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of St. Mark Holiness Church in Lake City.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, Michael Baker of the home; a stepson, John E. Billups of Columbia; two daughters, Sylvia Baker of New Zion and Michelle Nauss of Hawaii; two stepdaughters, Lavon Rogers of New Zion and Sheryl Singletary of Turbeville; three brothers, Bartell Baker, Nathaniel Baker and Presley Baker of New Zion; a sister, Runette Hall of New Zion; and two grandchildren whom he raised, Rachel Singletary and Marcus Baker of New Zion; 13 additional grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark Believers Holiness Church with Elder Linwood Cooper officiating.

Burial followed in Old McFadden Cemetery in Turbeville.
