Wilbert L. Herring

Wilbert LaGrand Herring, 83, husband of Lucille Strickland Herring, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at a local nursing facility.

Born in St. Stephens, he was a son of the late Estil Herring and Etta Mae Ludlum Herring. Mr. Herring was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a member of American Legion Post 15. He was retired from Sumter Machinery Co. and was a former Sumter County Sheriff’s deputy. He was also a former bailiff at the Sumter County Courthouse. He was a U.S. Marine veteran, serving in World War II.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter and one daughter, Rachel LaNell Herring of Summerton.

He was preceded in death by a son, Skipper Herring.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Ed Hannah, Larry Christopher and Norman Hamm officiating.

Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to First Pentecostal Holiness Church Parking Lot Fund, 2609 McCrays Mill Road, Sumter, S.C. 29154.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Mother Lou S. Hampton

Mother Lou Sinkler Hampton, 96, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born in Clarendon County on May 24, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Alice Temoney and Harkler Sinkler Sr.

She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She joined St. Phillips UME Church and received Jesus Christ as her personal savior. She served as mother of the church and worked diligently until her health failed.

Mother Hampton was joined in holy matrimony to the late Malachi Hampton, whom she loved dearly. Her great-grandson, Ray Mitchell, precedes her in death.

Those left to grow from her love and celebrate her legacy are a son; Leroy (Maxine) Hampton Sr. of Summerton; three daughters, Viola Murray of Sumter, Julia Green of Summerton and Jessie Mae Mitchell of Thomasville, N.C..; three grandchildren that she reared as her own, Linda (Praise) Richburg, of Thomasville, N.C., Deborah (Moses) Parker of Germany and Mark Thames of Summerton.;17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; and her caregivers at Windsor Manor Nursing Home in the Silver community.

Funeral services for Mother Hampton were held on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at St. Phillips UME Church. Services were officiated by the Revs. L. Myers, Willie Green, M.L. Brailsford and Marion Newton, Elder Jackie Holland and Elder James Robinson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Velma Mae Burgess

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Velma Mae Burgess, 68, died Jan. 13, 2007, at Long Island College Hospital, Brooklyn.

Born Dec. 12, 1938, in Manteo, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Bill Midgette and Brucie Midgette. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Dare County, Manteo. She was a member of the Haven Creek Baptist Church. She later relocated to Brooklyn.

Survivors include three brothers, Edgar Midgette, Arthur Midgette and Milton Midgette, all of Brooklyn; two sisters, Mary Midgette of Manteo and Magnolia Barriteau of Greenville, N.C.; one uncle, John Curtis of Richmond, Va.; and one aunt, Esteele Elliott of Norfolk, Va.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Julian, Mickley, Wilton, Oscar and Reginald Midgette; and one sister, Quendolyn Midgette.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at Briggs Chapel Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Bobby McDonald officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of services.

Oregon T. Ardis Jr.

Oregon Texas “O.T.” Ardis Jr., 89, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born March 21, 1917, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Oregon Texas Ardis Sr. and the late Tabiatha Ann Jackson Ardis. He was a retired self-employed mechanic, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Summerton United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class. Mr. Ardis was a member of the American Legion Post No. 35 in Summerton, and was president and in charge of the annual reunion of 3482nd Ordnance.

Surviving are his wife, Ida Estelle Sweatman Ardis of Summerton; two daughters, Linda (Roddy) Elliott of Manning and Arlene (Darrell) Robinson of Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Sally Brunson Ardis of Summerton; seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Oregon Texas Ardis III, and a grandson, William Joseph Elliott.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, in Summerton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Allen officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Grandsons and grandsons-in-law served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Hall, Ardis-Elliott Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 609, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.

Keniyah U. Taylor

Infant Keniyah Unique Taylor entered into eternal rest on Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Manning on Jan. 12, she was the daughter of Kenyon Taylor and Audrionna Kind.

Survivors other than her parents include maternal grandparents, Linda Kind of Summerton and Sammy Ellis of Davis Station; paternal grandparents, Johnny and Gwendolyn Taylor of Manning; maternal great-grandparents, James and Rosa Belle Kind of Smmerton; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2006, at Clarendon Healing Temple, Manning, with the Rev. James Betrand, pastor, officiating.

Final resting place was the church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals was in charge of the arrangements.

Alton C. Parnell

WETUMPKA, Ala. – Alton Crawley Parnell Sr., 84, husband of Virginia Trapp Parnell, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, Ala.

Born in Kingstree, he was a son of the late Branford H. Parnell and the late Ollie Stone Parnell.

Mr. Parnell was retired from the state of North Carolina. He was a member of Mount Holly United Methodist Church in Rock Hill and a former member of Sharon United Methodist Church in Holden Beach, N.C. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 46 in Kingstree and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Alton C. Parnell Jr. and William Tim Parnell, both of Sumter, and Rick R. Bracey of Rock Hill; three daughters, Diane P. Bouler of Wetumpka, Ala., Angie P. Brown of New Zion and Cheri B. Rhodes of Sumter; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a twin son, Michael; and a brother, Harry Parnell Sr.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Lynn Wall officiating.

Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were John Parnell, Whit Parnell, Trey Brown, Jason Humphries, Dan Carmen and Michael Geddings Jr.

Honorary pallbearers were members of Coastline Volunteer Rescue Squad of Supply, N.C.

Memorials may be made to Coastline Rescue, P.O. Box 24, Supply, N.C. 28462.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Gloria M. Mobley

Gloria Deane Murray Mobley, 45, wife of Freddie J. Mobley, departed this earthly life on Friday Morning, Dec. 29, 2006, at her home after a brief illness.

Born in Clarendon County on Aug. 1, 1961, she was a daughter of the late Ernest Murray Sr. and Fannie Murray.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1979 graduate of Manning High School. She attended Midlands Technical College and was employed at the Department of Corrections in Columbia.

At an early age, she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior and became a member of Light Hill Baptist Church. After moving to Sumter, she joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a devoted and loving husband, Freddie J. Mobley; a loving son, Antoine M. Wright, and stepson, Tyshaun Mobley; her loving mother, Fannie Murray of Foreston; four brothers, Robert (Emma) Murray, Charles (Alice) Murray and Ernest (Frances) Murray, all of Foreston, and Howard Murray of Sumter; six sisters, Dorothy Graham of Kingstree, Delores Murray of Foreston, Lula (Mark) Jones of Greeleyville, Joanne Murray and Diane (Leon) Rogers, both of Manning, Ernestine (Eugene) Middleton of Washington, D.C.; three uncles, John (Earnestine) Hilton of Bridgeton, N.J., Leo (Mary Jane) Murray of Foreston and Pruitt Murray of Manning; eight aunts, Illa Murray, Annie L. Keels, Louise Mathis, all of Foreston, Emma Jane Russell of Bridgeton, N.J., Connie (Rigby) Conyers of New Haven, Conn., Florie Hilton of Manning, Lucille Brooks and Elizabeth Johnson, both of Sumter; two brothers-in-law, Pastor Thomas (Jackie) Myers of Florence and Wayne (Cecile) Mobley of Sumter; four sisters-in-law, Delores (Jerome) Dantzler Robinson of New York, Barbara Shaw, Blondie Cabbagestalk and Gloria Anderson, all of Sumter; two very close friends, Patricia Conyers and Phyllis Mace of Paxville; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Murray Sr.; and one sister, Rena Mae Murray.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, from Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, senior pastor, eulogist.

Pallbearers were family and friends. Floral bearers were family and friends.

Burial was in Junk Yard Cemetery, Manning.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Oree Richburg

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Oree Richburg, 62, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, in Augusta.

Born April 21, 1944, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Richburg and Estell Martin Richburg. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and Pace University, New York, N.Y. During her youth, she joined Elizabeth Baptist Church and was a member of the junior choir and usher board. After moving to New York, she joined St. John Baptist Church, Inwood, N.Y., where she served dutifully on the usher board. She worked for more than 25 years for the American Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen (Sgt. 1st Class Johnny) Amos of Fort Gordon, Ga., and Andrea Denise (Frank) Drewery of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Gladys Bowman and Theo Cameron, both of Manning, and Elouise Davis of Jersey City, N.J.; nine grandchildren; one aunt, Ethel Martin of Baltimore, Md.; and one sister-in-law, Florence Richburg of Bishopville.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Benjamin and Oliver Richburg; and one sister, Rovena Davis.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at Elizabeth Baptist Church, Manning, with the Revs. Ashley B. Vaughn and George Pugh officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.
