BISHOPVILLE — Mary Martha Scott, widow of James Scott, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
The family will receive friends at the home on Freedom Drive in Elliott.
Services will be announced by Wilson’s Funeral Home.

LUCILLE R. ATKINSON

Lucille Rogers Atkinson, 81, widow of Charlie Leslie Atkinson, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital in Florence. Mrs. Atkinson was born in North Carolina. She was a retired bookkeeper at the National Bank of South Carolina. Survivors include two sons, Marion “Buddy” Atkinson and William H. “Billy” Atkinson and his wife, Loretta Atkinson, all of Sumter; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Eugene Mosier officiating. Burial will be in Wells Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of her grandson, Bill Atkinson, 2218 Bethel Church Road. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PATRICIA C. BRYCE

Patricia C. Bryce, 53, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Florence, she was a daughter of the late Oliver T. Crawford and Thelma Simpson Crawford. Survivors include a son, Howard K. Bryce Jr. of Aiken; a daughter, Michelle E. McCoy of Sumter; a brother, Oliver T. Crawford Jr. of Conway; four sisters, Ellen Wright of Hemingway, Marie Schuyler of Raleigh, N.C., Gloria Sealey of Garner, N.C., and Sue Gillespie of Darlington; and four grandchildren, Ashley Hamilton, Jessica McCoy, Zachary McCoy and Audrey Bryce. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Richardson officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Paul McCoy Jr., 4530 Frisco Branch Road. Memorials may be made to the Patricia Bryce Memorial Fund, 4530 Frisco Branch Road, Sumter. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JESSE CAPERS SR.

NEW YORK — Jesse Capers Sr., husband of Elizabeth Capers, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in New York. Born May 12, 1937, in Sumter, S.C., he was a son of the late Lydia Davis and Ellison Capers. Mr. Capers attended Sumter County public schools and graduated from Manchester High School. He moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., after graduating. He attended Enon Baptist Church while he was residing in Sumter, and he was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in New York while residing there. He was the owner of Capers Transportation. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Jesse Capers Jr. of Newark, N.J., and Steven Capers of Charlotte, N.C.; six sisters, Julia Stokes of Bronx, N.Y., Alice Wise of Brooklyn, N.Y., Frances Capers of Orlando, Fla., Wilene R. King of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Nola Simon and Lillie Capers, both of Orlando, Fla.; and a grandson, Frankie Capers. Funeral services were held on Jan. 28 at Benta’s Funeral Home Inc. in New York with the Rev. Herman H. Watts officiating. Burial was in Rosehill Cemetery in Linden, N.J. SCRANTON — Doris A. Driggers, 78, widow of Mack T. Driggers, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Luke Adams and Annie Coker Adams. Mrs. Adams was a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include eight sons, S.M. Driggers of Scranton, Thomas Driggers of Kannapolis, N.C., Mack Driggers of Florence, Joe Deal Driggers and Willie Driggers, both of Sumter, Sam Driggers of San Antonio, Texas, Kenny Driggers of Atlanta, Ga., and the Rev. Elro Driggers of Pamplico; six daughters, Joyce Cribbs of Jesup, Ga., Barbara Williams of Wichita, Kan., Ann Lafon of Norfolk, Va., Mae Gomez of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Marjorie Smith and Myrtle Mae Lee, both of Scranton; three brothers, James Adams of Lake City, Wilkins Adams of Coward and Rembert A. Dorrell of Timmonsville; a sister, Eleanor Mathis of Florence; and a number of grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will be in New Town Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Floyd Funeral Home. Lois Lillian Ellis, 75, wife of the Rev. Elwin M. Ellis, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield, Wis., she was a daughter of the late Oran Shoemaker and Edith Helen Penny Shoemaker. Mrs. Ellis was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a retired home missionary and a retired bookkeeper. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include three sons, Lawrence Ellis, Rodney Ellis and Martin Ellis, all of Sumter; a daughter, Beverly Liken of Philadelphia, Pa.; four brothers, Lowell Shoemaker of San Antonio, Texas, Roy Shoemaker of Taylorville, Ill., Russell Shoemaker of Phoenix, Ariz., Warren Shoemaker of Kohoka, Mo.; three sisters, Peggy Howard of Iowa, Alice Ortel of Freemont, Calif., Kathleen Parkin of Fairfield Bay, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Ellis; and a brother, Wayne Ellis. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church with Dr. James Goodroe and Dr. Thomas Painter officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Elizabeth Pack Hodge, 74, wife of Jim E. Hodge, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Carl Ben Pack Sr. and Theresa Hodge Pack. Mrs. Hodge was a member of Providence Baptist Church. She was a retired manager of Pinewood Manufacturing Co. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include three sons, Thomas Edward Hodge of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Garry Hodge and Terry Hodge, both of Sumter; a brother, Kenneth Pack of Sumter; four sisters, Lila Mae Thames of Manning, and Audrey Wadford, Harriet Hodge and Jessie Tutton, all of Sumter; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a son, Barry Hodge; a granddaughter, Amber Lynn Hodge; and two brothers, Carl Ben Pack Jr. and Leslie Earl Pack. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Green officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. WILMINGTON, N.C. — Margaret Canty Holmes of 1014 South Sixth St., widow of Thomas Holmes Jr., died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000. Born in Pinewood, S.C., she was a daughter of the late James Matthew Canty Sr. and Daisy Lou Rhames Canty. Survivors include five children, Thomas Holmes Jr. and Margaret Patricia Ann Holmes, both of Wilmington, Stelena Holmes of Jacksonville, N.C., Faustina Holmes-West of Burgaw, N.C., and Rennie Matthew Holmes of Wilmington; one brother, James Matthew Canty Jr. of Paterson, N.J.; three sisters, Ruth Louise Conyers of Wilmington, Ernestine Hastie of Queens, N.Y., and Ruby Mae Porter of Bronx, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Frank Hastie of Sumter, S.C.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in Wilmington National Cemetery. CLIFFORD B. JORDAN

OLANTA — Clifford B. Jordan, 82, husband of Mae L. Jordan, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late James Napoleon Jordan and Jeddie Floyd Jordan. Mr. Jordan was employed by Clemson University as a livestock inspector. He was a member of Nazareth United Methodist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Olanta include a son, C.B. “Buddy” Jordan Jr. of Hopkins; a daughter, Kathryn Gibbons of Summerton; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Smith. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Nazareth United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Thomas Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Floyd Funeral Home. Floyd Funeral Home in Olanta is in charge of arrangements.

ANNIE M. LISBON

Annie Mae Lisbon, widow of Joe Lisbon Sr., died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at Hermina Traeye Nursing Home in Johns Island. Born June 25, 1915, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Wesley Durant and Mary Casey Durant. Born and reared in Elliott, she was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wisacky. In the early 1960s she moved to Sumter. In 1965 she moved to New York, where she was a member of Bethel AME Church and was a member of the Alumni Club. In 1970 she moved to New Jersey, and in 1995 she relocated to Charleston. Survivors include a son, Joe lisbon Jr. of New York, N.Y.; a daughter, Mary Williams of Johns Island; a brother, Clint Durant of Florida; and two granddaughters, Linda Marie Williams of Goose Creek and Jamie Latisha Williams of Charleston. She was preceded in death by a son, James Wesley Lisbon. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Palmer Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Paul Sellers officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the home of Herman Jackson, 1020 Truitt St. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

EVA W. LOWERY

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Eva Mae Washington Lowery, widow of Purdy Lowery Sr., died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at Howard University Hospital. Born Mary 14, 1927, in Sumter County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Dock Washington and Lelia Knox Washington. Mrs. Lowery attended Sumter County public schools. Before moving to Washington, D.C., she attended Asbury United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Remona Lowery Montgomery of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Elizabeth Washington Harrison of Greenville, N.C.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Herbert Lowery and Purdy Lowery Jr. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church in Lynchburg, S.C., with the Rev. George Cousar officiating. Burial will be in Goodman Cemetery in Lynchburg. Pallbearers will be Charles Green, Jerry Muldrow, Herbert Lowery, Eugene Green, Ezell Green, Nathaniel Lowery. Flower bearers will be Bertha Faye Green, Diane Green and Martha Ann Green. The funeral procession will leave at 12:20 p.m. from Jefferson Funeral Home. James “Mutterbee” Mack Jr., husband of Mattie L. Singleton Mack, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 10, 1949, in Sumter County, he was a son of Annie Charles Mack and the late James Mack Sr. Mr. Mack was a member of Allen Chapel AME Church, where he served as a member of the usher board. He attended Sumter County public schools. He was employed by Harvin Construction, Ramsey Construction and Edcon of Columbia. He played baseball for Neal Brothers. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter and his mother of Sumter include a son, Tyrone Wright; two daughters, Debbie Wright and Debra Wright; his stepchildren, Teresa Clea, Victoria Boyd, and Terreance, Jonathan and Roosevelt Singleton; four brothers, James McElveen, Leroy Robinson, Joenathan and Glen Mack, all of Sumter; seven sisters, Alice Shannon, Dorothy Marion, Charlie Mae Jones, Emma Lewis and Shirul Cook, all of Sumter, Willie Mae Williams of Van Nuys, Calif., and Lucille Summers of Brooklyn, N.Y. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Allen Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Romeo Leonard, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Earl Galloway, Minister Joan P. Murell, Minister Ruth Oliver, the Rev. Horton Howard and Elder Erwin L. Marion. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 641 East St. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

DEACON LUTHER L. SINGLETARY JR.

LAKE CITY — Deacon Luther Levern Singletary Jr., 55, husband of Barbara Lee Singletary, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Luther Singletary Sr. and Alberta Singletary. He attended Florence County public schools. He was a former employee of C.B. Askins Co. Mr. Singletary was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the deacon board, treasurer, Sunday school superintendent and president of the male chorus. He was a past master of St. Joseph Masonic Lodge No. 450, a chaplain of Eastern Star Chapter 330, chairman of Sandhill Memorial Park, a member of the devotional committee of St. John Baptist Association, and a member of Sons and Daughters of King Solomon Lodge. Survivors besides his wife of 34 years of the home include his children, Barbara Bryant of Lake City, Alfert Singletary of Lithonia, Ga., and Nicole and Lorenzo Singletary, both of Columbia; two brothers, Winston McClam of Philadelphia, Pa., and Sgt. Maj. Jerry Singletary of Kansas City, Mo.; five sisters, Francena Gadsen, Cleo Daniels, Rosa Ashbrooks and Betty Jordan, all of New York, and Ella Ray Burgess of Lake Worth, Fla.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two children, Norma Jean and Andrew. A wake service and societal rites will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at New Zion Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Believers Holiness Convention Center in Coward with the Rev. J.J. Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Sandhill Memorial Park. ESABELLA W. WHITE

Esabella Williams White, widow of Edward White, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at her home. Born July 27, 1929, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Calvin Pearson and Lue Ida Baker Pearson. Mrs. White attended Bethlehem Baptist Church in her youth, where she was a member of the usher board and gospel choir. She attended the public schools. She was employed by School District 17 as a custodian for over 20 years. She retired in 1984. Survivors include two sons, Johnny White and Eddie White, both of Sumter; three daughters, Lula Joe and Flora White, both of Sumter, and Cynthia Thompson of Charlotte, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. L.W. Barnes officiating. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 504 S. Main St. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

MECHELLE A. BEARD

Mechelle Anita Beard of Apt 49-A, Jackson Street, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000.
Born March 7, 1982, in Fort Carson, Colo., she was a daughter of Nancy Robins Gainey Beard and Samuel Lee Beard Jr.
The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, 965 Miller Road, Apt. E-5, Sumter.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

HATTIE D. BRUNSON

PAXVILLE — Hattie Davis Brunson, 62, died Friday evening, Feb. 4, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
Born April 27, 1937, in the Paxville community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Marcus Davis and Annie Stukes Davis.
The family will receive friends at her home, U.S. 15 South, Paxville, and at the homestead of the late Dora Holiday, S.C. 261 East, Paxville.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

Ethel G. Davis died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Arthur Gass, husband of Mable Gass, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000.
Born Sept. 17, 1924, in Lee County, he was a son of James “Bub” Gass and Carrie Pinkney Gass.

HAMBURG, N.J. — William M. Gould, 75, husband of Jennie Weaver Gould, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, after a long illness.
Born in Wykertown, N.J., he was a son of the late Louis B. and Elizabeth Gould.
He was the father of Patsy L. Lordy and Shirley M. Dreher, both of Sumter, S.C.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at F. John Ramsey Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral Home.
