John Bradwisch

PLANKINTON -- John F. Bradwisch, 94, Plankinton, died Sunday (Aug. 24, 2003) at Weskota Memorial Hospital, Wessington Springs.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Plankinton, with the Rev. Richard Milbrandt officiating. Burial is in Mizpah Cemetery, Plankinton.

Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church.

The Shearer Funeral Home of Plankinton is assisting with the arrangements.

He was born Sept. 22, 1908, in Dudley Township, Aurora County, to Robert and Alvina (Miller) Bradwisch. He married Esther Steffen Nov. 23, 1932, at White Lake. He farmed southeast of Plankinton his entire life until moving to Stickney in 1995. He moved to Sioux Falls in 1998 and then to the Aurora Brule Nursing Home in White Lake in 2001.

He enjoyed fixing machinery, going fishing and dancing. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Plankinton.

He is survived by three grandchildren, Debra Preheim, Sioux Falls; Susan Kirkwold, Sioux Falls; and Timothy Bradwisch, Yankton; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Olson, Mitchell; one daughter-in-law, Charlotte, Sioux Falls; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1987, his son, one great-grandson, four sisters and two brothers-in-law.

Kim Petersen

SIOUX FALLS -- Kim A. Petersen, 53, Sioux Falls, died Wednesday (Sept. 3, 2003) at Sioux Valley Centennial Hospice.

Memorial services are 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Lynwood Wesleyan Church, Sioux Falls.

Visitation with the family present begins at 7:30 p.m. today (Friday) at Heritage Funeral Home, Sioux Falls.

He was born April 18, 1950, in Yankton to Morris and Jacquelin (McManus) Petersen. He grew up in Irene and married Crystal Svarstad Jan. 30, 1971, in Irene. He graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1972. He worked as a carpenter after college and later as a contractor. The couple made their home in Irene for 25 years. He owned and operated Skogen-Petersen Inc. They developed Petersen Company in 1998 in Beresford and they moved to Sioux Falls.

He is survived by his wife, Crystal, Sioux Falls; three sons: Nathan (Amanda), Beresford; Aaron (Sherrie), Beresford; and Adam, Sioux Falls; his mother and step-father, Jacquelin (Luverne) Nelson, Irene; his mother-in-law, Betty Svarstad, Irene; two grandchildren; and three sisters: Marsha Skogen, Irene, Melanie Stein, Rochester, Minn.; and Lisa Bruns, Brandon.

Leon Andersen

SIOUX FALLS -- Leon N. Andersen, 70, Sioux Falls, died Sunday (Sept. 7, 2003) at Select Specialty Hospital, Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are 1 p.m. Tuesday at Augustana Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls.

Visitation begins at 3 p.m. today (Monday) with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, Sioux Falls.

He was born Dec. 13, 1932, at the family farm Viborg, to Harvey and Freda (Hansen) Andersen. He grew up and attended school in Viborg. He worked on the family farm and neighboring farms. In 1953, Leon joined the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1955. After serving in the Army, He returned to South Dakota living in Yankton. He married Marilyn Brunke March 15, 1957, at Yankton. In 1965, they moved to Sioux Falls and he started working at Morrells where he worked until retiring in 1995.

He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and visiting family and friends.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge and VFW.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, Sioux Falls; four sons: Ronald (Shelly), Sioux Falls, Roger (Lisa), Pierre, James, Maryville, Tenn., and Scott (Karen), Sacramento, Calif.; two daughters: Robin (Brian) VanderPlaats, Pierre, and Cindy (Ron) Meier, Sioux Falls, 14 grandchildren; two brothers: Jerome, Sioux Falls, and Larry, Woodbine, Iowa; and one sister, Diane Rist, Centerville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and one grandchild.

Kenneth W. Wright

Kenneth W. Wright, 90, of Rapid City, S.D., died Tues., Sept. 2, 2003, at Good Samaritan Center, New Underwood, S.D., after a long illness.

Funeral services will be on Friday, Sept. 5, at 10 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Rapid City, with the Rev. Bruce Baum officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park, Rapid City, where he will be buried beside his wife.

Kenneth Washburn Wright was born Aug. 12, 1913, on a farm in Clay County, rural Volin, S.D., to Albion and Dora Washburn Wright. He attended the Saybrook Rural School and graduated from Volin High School. As a young man, he worked on several farms in the vicinity. He married Maxine Hoxeng Aug. 23, 1936, in the Volin Lutheran Church parsonage by the Rev. P. M. Fjaere. They moved immediately to Sioux Falls, where he was employed by Iseman's Sioux Tire and Battery Company. In 1946, Kenneth was transferred by the company to Rapid City and continued working for Iseman's in Iseman's Trailer Sales. Kenneth retired in 1978. He and his family were active in the Canyon Lake and Faith Lutheran Churches.

Maxine, his wife of 64 years preceded him in death in December of 2000. Kenneth was also preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers; Carl, Gerald, and Wilbert Wright.

Kenneth is survived by two sons, Richard Wright of Covina, Calif.; and Donald Wright of Oregon City, Ore.; four grandsons, Richard and Todd of North Carolina, Douglas and Dwayne of California; a granddaughter, Jennifer Patterson of St. Paul, Minn.; and several great grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church, 17 Indiana St., Rapid City, SD 57701.

The Kirk Funeral Home, Rapid City, is in charge of arrangements.

JoAnne Hanson

SIOUX FALLS -- JoAnne Colleen Hanson, 66, Sioux Falls, died Monday (Sept. 8, 2003) at her home after 4 1/2 years of living with ovarian cancer.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls. Burial is at Hills of Rest Memorial Park.

Visitation begins at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) with the family present from 6:30-8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, Yankton.

She was born June 17, 1937, in Yankton to Raymond and Fern (Simonson) Hanson. She grew up on the family farm near Mission Hill and attended Rempp District No. 18 Country School. After graduating from Volin High School in 1955, she earned a bachelor's in nursing from Augustana College in 1959. She married Darwin St. John in Mission Hill on Nov. 26, 1959. The couple lived in Sioux Falls, where she began her nursing career at the Veteran's Hospital and started a family. Her husband died on May 9, 1963. She married Rich Hanson in Sioux Falls on June 18, 1966. After staying home to raise their children, she returned to the workforce in 1981 at Sioux Valley Hospital. It was there that she was able to resume her nursing career which she truly loved and for which she received the Florence Nightingale Award in 1990. She retired in 1999. The many positions she held in W.E.L.C.A. and A.A.U.W. advanced the well being of women in her church and the community.

She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church where she served as the first female president of the congregation. Her involvement in Stephen Ministry, Caring Ministry and Cancer Support Group was a great source of comfort and strength.

She is survived by her husband, Rich; children Elizabeth (John) Kilbourne, Manomet, Mass.; Robert Hanson, Littleton, Colo.; and Chad (Stephanie) Hanson, Sioux Falls; six grandchildren; her mother, Fern Hanson, Vermillion; one brother, Darrell Hanson, Yankton; three sisters: Mary Main, Blair, Neb.; Elaine Olson, Woodstock, Vt.; and Renda Bertrand, Gayville; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be directed to the Our Savior's Church Foundation for the Parish Nursing fund.

Harold K. Fiedler

VERMILLION -- Harold K. Fiedler, age 77, of Vermillion, formerly of Sioux Falls and Gayville, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

A funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church, Yankton with the Rev. Dayne Zachrison officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Wakonda, with military honors provided by Ernest Bowyer VFW Post No. 791, Yankton.

Pallbearers are Carl Blank, Dean Isburg, Tom Jorgensen, Jerry Moye, Leland Papik and Albert Valdez. Honorary pallbearers are Conrad Fiedler, Tyler Fiedler, Allan Jorgensen, Jim Kronaizl and all the members of 1943 Gayville High School Senior Class.

Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. by St. John's Masonic Lodge No.1, A.F. & A.M., Yankton.

Harold "Tiny" Fiedler was born Dec. 9, 1925, at Yankton, South Dakota, to Albert and Emma (Nelson) Fielder. He spent his childhood years in Gayville and graduated from Gayville High School in 1943. He enjoyed music and sports activities, and often proudly recalled that he was a member of the 1943 District Champion Basketball Team. March 31, 1944, he entered the service of his country becoming a member of the U.S. Army. After training at Camp McCoy Wisconsin, he was sent overseas and participated in the liberation of Europe with the 76th Infantry Division. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Germany Occupation Medal and the European Service Medal. During his duty, he served in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He was honorably discharged in June of 1946, and returned to live in Gayville where he assisted his father in Fiedler Implement Company. On Feb. 10, 1947, he married Elizabeth Jorgenson at Vermillion. He was the Democratic candidate for Yankton County Treasurer in 1950. The Fiedler family moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 1952, and he took employment as a ticket agent with Braniff Airlines. They returned to South Dakota in 1959, and he purchased the Corey Hotel and Cafe in Gayville. With the assistance of his wife and children he operated the business until 1964. He then enrolled in college in 1964, and later moved to Vermillion where he managed the VFW Club while attending the University of South Dakota. In 1968, he graduated from USD with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology. Tiny was employed as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor for the State of South Dakota Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, serving Yankton, Vermillion, Sioux Falls and surrounding areas. He enjoyed his work as a counselor and was very dedicated to helping his clients by assisting them in finding employment, returning to school and becoming productive members of society. The Carroll Institute and River Park recognized him for his efforts in helping clients and families with substance abuse problems.

With a zest for life, he especially enjoyed the time with his family, the yearly Nelson family reunion, reminiscing about his experiences in World War II. Those who knew him well will recall his fondness of relating stories of General George S. Patton visiting his army battalion during combat. He also treasured attendance at the 76th Infantry Division Association reunions.

He was a member of the Minnehaha Masonic Lodge No.5 A.F. & A.M., Sioux Falls, El Raid Shrine and the provost unit of the El Raid Shrine. Harold and Elizabeth were active members of the El Raid Shrine Dance Club and Harold danced well, in spite of a below the knee amputation. An enthusiastic supporter of University of South Dakota sports, he and his wife were season ticket holders for several years, attending Coyote football and basketball games. Hazardous winter weather was endured often during the trips to the Dome to enjoy their Coyote games, win or loose, he loved the Coyotes. He was a proud member of the Gayville American Legion and a life member of Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791, Yankton.

He will be greatly missed by his family and his devoted dog, Sam. He is survived his wife, Elizabeth of Vermillion; three sons, Ronald (Patricia) of Mesa, Ariz., Richard of Sioux Falls, and Barry (Barbara) of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters: Barbara (Leland) Papik of Mission Hill, and Annette (Jerry) Moye of Burleson, Texas; four grandchildren: Tyler Fielder of Alexandria, Va., Conrad Fiedler of Manteca, Calif., Albert Valdez and Ashley Valdez of Burleson, Texas.

His parents, one brother, Robert preceded him in death.

Nyla VanDeRostyne

PARKER -- Nyla VanDeRostyne, age 67, of Parker, passed away early Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, of cancer at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, S.D.

A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at St. Christina Catholic Church, Parker, with the Rev. Kenneth Koster officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, at approximately 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

Pallbearers will be Paul Nickles, Joe Nickles, Joe VanDeRostyne, Jim Kaiser, Gus Miller and Paul VanDeRostyne.

Visitations will be 3-5:30 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a rosary followed by a Scripture service at 5:30 p.m. Visitations will resume Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at St. Christina Catholic Church in Parker, S.D., with a Scripture and rosary service at 8 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Nyla was born on Oct. 16, 1935, to Frank and Winifred (Betz) Nickles in St. Helena, Neb. She attended Sacred Heart Grade School, Mount Marty High School and graduated from Mount Marty Nurses School. On Sept. 5, 1957, she was united in marriage to Donald VanDeRostyne in Yankton, S.D. Nyla was a registered nurse and worked in the Yankton medical community for more than 40 years. She was also an ambulance volunteer for more than 20 years and taught CPR. In 1972, she and her husband purchased the Turner County Abstract Company in Parker, S.D.

They were members of St. Christina Catholic Church in Parker.

Those who survive her are her husband, Don P. of Parker, S.D.; four sons: Donald Joseph of Yankton, S.D.; Steven of Yankton, S.D.; Craig (Jodie) of Manterville, Minn.; and James (Janet) of Parker, S.D.; two daughters: Mary Flom of Yankton, S.D.; and Tracy (Don) Mason, Sioux City, Iowa; one brother, Bradley Nickles of Yankton, S.D.; one sister, Kathleen "Kitty" Lynch of Lancaster, Calif.; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Winifred Nickles; and her brother, Larry Nickles.

Nadine Mischke

CROFTON, Neb. -- Nadine P. Mischke, 75, Crofton, Neb., died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003) at Avera Sister James Nursing Home, Yankton.

Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Crofton, with the Rev. Bob English officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Visitation is from 3-9 p.m. today (Wednesday) with a 7 p.m. vigil service and a 7:30 p.m. Christian Mothers rosary at the Wintz Funeral Home, Crofton.

She was born Sept. 18, 1927, at Constance, Neb., to Ludwig and Catherine (Schumacher) Bruder. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Constance, St. Rose School in Crofton and graduated from Crofton High School in 1945. She worked at WNAX for many years. She married Jerome C. Mischke May 14, 1947, at Yankton. They farmed and raised registered Hereford cattle northwest of Crofton with her husband's brothers. Her husband died Jan. 13, 2002. She battled cancer for many years.

She was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and guild, the Christian Mothers and Crofton Women's Club. She and her husband traveled extensively. She loved to work jigsaw puzzles, bake and decorate cakes, play cards, attend antique sales and collect marbles.

She is survived by her husband's siblings: Cyrus Mischke, Crofton; Gordon Mischke, Crofton; Lois Folkers, Crofton; Vivian Bruder, Crofton; and John Bruder, Crescent City, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and four brothers.
