AGNES BARBARA LAPP

Agnes Barbara Lapp passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen. She was 94 years, 11 months old. A private service was held with Father Joseph Holzhauser, Celebrant. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, was in charge of the arrangements.

Agnes Schroh was born on April 22, 1916 to Joseph and Barbara (Herrbach) Schroh in Aberdeen. This is where she grew up and attended St. Mary’s School.

Agnes was married to Jacob Lapp on October 14, 1944 in Aberdeen. He died in 1974. Agnes continued to make her home here and entered Mother Joseph Manor in April, 2008.

Grateful for having shared Agnes’ life are her two daughters; Carol Henschel and Donna (Marvin) Schott, two grandsons; Paul Henschel and Dana Ford, two great granddaughters; Malerie and Courtney Henschel, and a sister, Genevieve Treml.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, husband, one son, Gary and three brothers, Lawrence, Walter and Joseph Schroh.

WALTER “PA” HEUPEL

Services for Walter “Pa” Heupel, 81, Aberdeen will be 10 am, Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at First Baptist Church with Pastor Sam Ellyson officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Walter died Friday, March 25 at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Tuesday with family present from 5-7 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Walter Heupel was born on July 23, 1929 to Jacob and Rosina (Pfeiffer) Heupel at Ashley, ND. He grew up and attended school in the Wetonka, SD area. In 1951, Walter entered the US Army and was honorable discharged on June 4, 1953.

On June 10, 1953, Walter married Ruth Heupel at Aberdeen, SD. They made their home in Aberdeen where he worked at various places. In 1974 he worked for the public school system. In 1985 Walter retired from the public schools due to his health. In 1988 he went to work for Rux Brothers Plumbing.

Walter was a member of First Baptist Church. He was active in the Aberdeen Area Senior Citizens Center. Walter loved John Deere tractors and talking about the farm. He truly loved all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Walter’s life are his wife, Ruth, two sons, Allan (Diane) Heupel of Aberdeen, and Arlen (Cari) Heupel of Aberdeen, daughter Cindy Bosma of Aberdeen, daughter-in-law Kathy Heupel of Aberdeen, seven grandchildren, Paula (Matt Martin, Matt Heupel, Jodi (Roger) Theis, Kimberly Heupel, Josh (Jessica) Bosma, Kelly (Colin) O’Brien and Angie (Derrick) Johnson, eight great grandchildren, Kayleigh, Brendan and Brady Martin, Kiana and Logan Theis, Emma Bosma, Rowan O’Brien and Avery Johnson, and two brothers, Jacob (Marlene) Heupel and Harry Heupel.

He is preceded in death by his parents, son, Gary Heupel, five brothers, and four sisters.

LORRAINE M. (LUVAAS) DEAN

Private services for Lorraine M. (Luvaas) Dean, 90, Aberdeen, will be held on a later date at Prairie Hill Cemetery, Bradley. Lorraine died Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Grateful for having shared Lorraine’s life are sister Luella (Edward) Lambert of Aberdeen, brother Levi Luvaas of Brookings, nephews Larry (Julie) Lambert, Norman Lambert and nieces Linda (Don) Woodward, Marlene (Gary) Randermann, one great niece, two great nephews, and one great-great nephew

DOROTHY M. BERGMAN

The memorial service for Dorothy Mae Bergman, 90, Spearfish and formerly of Aberdeen will be 10:00am Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Pastor Jeff Whillock will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military rites by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24. Dorothy died Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Belle Fourche Senior Healthcare Center.

A time of remembrance with Dorothy’s family present will be held from 4:00-7:00pm Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Dorothy Mae Larsen, daughter of Albert and Mary (Rockstad) Larsen was born on June 19, 1920 at St. Paul, MN. This is the area where she was raised and attended school. Dorothy enlisted in the United States Navy in April of 1944 until receiving her honorable discharge in January of 1946. She went on to attend Rasmussen Business College and later was employed as a private secretary for Farwell, Ozmun, Kirk and Company.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Alois Bergman on January 16, 1954 at Aberdeen. The couple made their home on the Bergman family farm near Mina, SD where they lived for many years. Alois died on November 15, 1993. Dorothy remained on the farm until 1997 when she began making her home in Aberdeen. She later moved to the Black Hills in 2006 where she remained until the time of her death.

Dorothy will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She loved her family and cherished every moment she was able to spend with them especially her grandchildren. In her free time Dorothy enjoyed reading and music.

Grateful for having shared her life are two sons Rick (Janet) Bergman, Aberdeen and Steve Bergman of Sturgis, SD, two granddaughters Stacia (C.J.) Willems and Janessa Bergman, great grandchildren Boyd and Brynne Willems, step grandchildren Ross (Sam) Peterson and Patricia Olson, step great grandson Rhiley Peterson and one sister Harriet Brunnette.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers Harry and Albert Larsen, one sister Helen Kemp and one daughter in law Tammy Bergman.

ALBERT “BOYD” THOMPSON

The funeral service for Albert “Boyd” Thompson, 88, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:00pm, Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Pastor Gary Wileman officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Boyd died Saturday, March 26 at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Monday, March 28 at the funeral home.

Albert Boyd Thompson was born on April 22, 1922 to William Walter “WW” and Florence Ione (Tedford) Thompson near Zenith, Kansas. He attended rural school near Zenith. He then rode the bus to school in Sylvia, Kansas and graduated from Sylvia High School in 1939 as Valedictorian of his class. Boyd worked for a neighbor on the farm. He entered the US Army with the Field Artillery Division in 1942. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He then attended college under the G.I. Bill of Rights at the University of Mississippi and Kansas State University.

Boyd married Martha Magdalene Leicht on October 20, 1947 at Tolstoy, SD. They farmed for eight years at Burdette, Kansas with his two brothers. They then moved to Larned, Kansas where he worked at the Larned State Mental Hospital as a Medical Technician for 22 years. He then became employed with Alco Discount Stores as receiving supervisor. He retired in 1989 and they moved to Aberdeen where he has continued to live. Boyd’s wife Martha died on August 24, 2005 at Aberdeen.

Boyd was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Aberdeen. He was always a gentle man and had a smile for everybody.

Grateful for having shared Boyd’s life are his nieces and nephews and his friends and church family. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Florence, his wife Martha, and five brothers: Harry, Earl, Howard, Enoch and Harold Thompson.

LEA (COLLINS) WHITE

The funeral service for Lea (Collins) White, 92, of Aberdeen will be 2:00pm, Monday, March 28, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home; 1111 S. Main St., with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen. Lea died Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from10am until the time of service on Monday at the funeral home.

Lea Wiedmann was born on July 25, 1918 to Philip and Dorothea (Mueller) Wiedmann at Ashley, ND. She was born and raised in the Ashley area.

Lea married Roy T. Collins on July 25, 1941 at Venturia, ND. They made their home in Ashley, ND. After Roy’s discharge from the military, they moved to California. In 1948, Lea and Roy moved to Aberdeen. Lea was the bookkeeper at Roy’s business, the Aberdeen Cement Block Co. After Roy’s death on November 8, 1957, Lea sold the concrete business and retired. She moved to Davis Court in 2008 and later moved to Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Lea was a member of First Baptist Church of Aberdeen. She loved her church and volunteered as a treasurer there. Lea also served others by helping with Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She loved wildlife and especially enjoyed feeding pheasants and squirrels in her yard. Cats always held a special place in Lea’s heart, and one of her favorites was her cat Pumpkin. Lea had a passion for playing piano. She was an accomplished bowler and loved playing bridge.

Grateful for having shared Lea’s life are her sister Lydia Nelson of Washington, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Philip and Dorothea, her husband, Roy, three brothers, Adolph, Julius and Otto Wiedmann, and three sisters, Martha Bertsch, Frieda Bower and Annetta Striebel.

WILLIAM “BILL” BOHN

The funeral service for William “Bill” Bohn, 80, of Aberdeen, is 2:00pm, Friday, March 25, 2011 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen with Military Honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Bill died Monday, March 21 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Thursday, March 24 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Aberdeen, 1111 S. Main St.

William Otto Bohn was born on May 28, 1930 to Albert and Mary (Kenitzer) Bohn at Aberdeen, SD. He grew up and attended school in Aberdeen. As a young man, Bill worked on various farms including the Baer family farm. He also worked for the Cass Clay Creamery in Aberdeen. Bill enjoyed attending dances at Tacoma Park and was known for his Lincoln Zephyr that he drove.

Bill married Donna Marie Bohn on January 10, 1954 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. They made their home in Aberdeen their whole lives, except for two years that they lived in Washington. Bill owned B&K Janitorial Service and did custodial work for many years. He was also a traveling salesman, selling everything from shoes to insurance. Over the years, Bill also worked with Donna in the dry cleaning business and owned a second hand store named The Bargain Center. In November of 2007, Bill and Donna moved into Aberdeen Health and Rehab. Bill was active in social events and showed religious videos and led many devotions. Donna died on January 23, 2009.

Bill was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. He had a strong faith and was bold in sharing it with others. Bill was a hardworking man and a jack of all trades. He volunteered at New Beginnings when he was able to. Bowling was a favorite pass time of Bill and Donna. Bill enjoyed watching sports, especially Northern State University football and basketball. He was a fisherman and taught his children to fish. Bill loved his family and especially loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Bill’s life are his children David Bohn, Louise Nash, William “Bill J.” & Janet Bohn and Rosemary Moffenbier, his grandchildren, Kendra Bohn, Jason & Amy Bohn, Shawn & Amy Nash, Travis Nash, Byram Joseph “BJ” Nash, Nichole Chapin, William Albert Bohn, Sara Hohn, Jennifer Bohn, Tory Bohn, Kelly & Clint Ortmeier, Molly Ohman, Eric Moffenbier, Samantha Bohn, Tyler Moffenbier, Brandon Moffenbier, and Hailey Moffenbier, one sister, Loretta Shuff and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Mary, his wife of 55 years, Donna, two brothers, Elroy and Gus and three sisters, Virginia Albrecht, Genevieve Weeks and Sylvia Baer.

ROBERT G. FORD

Services for Robert G. Ford, 77, Aberdeen will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Robert died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Robert is survived by one son Joel Ford, one sister Kathleen Baltzell, two nephews and four nieces.

MARY LOU WEISMANTEL

Services for Mary Lou Weismantel, 75, Columbia, are 10:30 am, Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Columbia, Pastor Jais Tinglund and Pastor Craig Grams officiating. Burial at Lakeview Cemetery, Columbia. Mary died Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the Heart Hospital, Sioux Falls.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm Tuesday with family present from 5-7 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to Lakeview Cemetery or Columbia American Legion Auxiliary.

Mary Lou Johnson was born on May 10, 1935 in Columbia, SD to Ralph and Elva (Wenger) Johnson. She graduated from Columbia High School with the class of 1953. On July 6, 1955 she married Martin Weismantel in Columbia where they made their home and raised their family.

As a direct descendant of the first settlers in Brown County, Mary was also the unofficial historian of Columbia. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, hardanger, gardening, canning (her dill pickles graced many a table!) and baking; others enjoyed being the recipient of these talents. Mary also dedicated many hours caring for the Lakeview Cemetery. Never one to bring attention to herself, she was happiest when she was helping others. She especially loved her granddaughters and attending their activities. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Grateful for having shared Mary’s life are her children, Lorie (Terry) Gilchrist, Columbia, Ruth Nelson, Aberdeen, Marty (Amy) Weismantel, Columbia, granddaughters, Ashley Gilchrist, Courtney Gilchrist, Lauren Nelson, Hattie Weismantel and Elliana Weismantel, brothers, Joseph Johnson, Columbia, and Dean (Janice) Johnson, Aberdeen.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Martin Weismantel; parents, Ralph and Elva Johnson; son, Loren Weismantel; brothers, Bob Johnson and Clare Johnson; sisters, Alice Johnson and Ruth Daly.

MARGARET H. KENSLER

The funeral service for Margaret Helen Kensler, 84, of Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Thursday, March 17, 2011 at Calvary Baptist Church, 515 8th Ave. NE, with Pastor Randy Battey officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Margaret died Sunday, March 13, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Groton.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 6:00pm, Wednesday, March 16 at the funeral home, with family present from 4:00 to 6:00pm.

Margaret Helen Kensler, daughter of Calvin and Ida Isabelle (Knittel) Kensler, was born February 21, 1927 in Aberdeen, SD.

Margaret was raised in Aberdeen where she went to school at Henry Neill. She later helped her mother clean at Northern Normal, an Aberdeen doctor’s office, and apartments. Margaret lived in Aberdeen all of her life until moving to Golden Living Center in Redfield and later Golden Living Center in Groton.

Margaret was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Aberdeen Area Senior Center, the National Woman’s Relief Corps., the Tabitha Society and the Salvation Army Home League. When she was younger she was a member of the WWI Barracks Auxiliary and made over 100 doll clothes for Veterans Dolls at Christmas. She enjoyed crocheting and jigsaw puzzles. Margaret loved children and babysat her nephew and other children.

Grateful for having shared her life are her brother, Raymond Kensler of Aberdeen, and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Donald Kensler and Howard Kensler, one infant brother and one infant sister.
