Earl L. Espeland

Funeral services for Earl Espeland, age 86, of Glenham, SD will be Wednesday at 10:00 AM at the Norway Lutheran Church rural Glenham. Pastor Dennis Fonkert will officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM at the Kesling Funeral home. Visitation will be Tuesday beginning at 2:00 PM at the funeral Home. Mr. Espeland passed away February 4, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Center in Selby, SD.

Earl Louis Espeland was born on June 19, 1923 to Ingval and Hilda (Lund) Espeland at the family home in Campbell County north of Glenham, SD. He grew up on his parents' farm and attended the Amundson & Larson Schools. He spent his junior year of high school in Brookings, SD, and graduated from Glenham High School in 1941. He helped on the family farm before joining the US Marine Corps in September, 1945. He spent time in the Hawaiian Islands and was discharged on October 20, 1946. Following his discharge he returned to the family farm. On March 18, 1956, he married Violet Hanson at Norway Lutheran Church. Following their marriage, they made their home on the family farm where they farmed and raised their family. Some hobby interests included emus, guinea hens, and geese. Other than Violet, the love of his life was farming. At the time of his death Earl was a resident of the Selby Good Samaritan Center.

Earl was baptized and confirmed, and a very active member of Norway Lutheran Church. He sang in their choir, taught Sunday school, and served as an officer on the church council.

Earl enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, attending family reunions, and being outdoors. Earl and a friend, Walter Hohle, hunted deer in the Black Hills every November for 50 years. He could tell you many stories of the years growing up when neighborhood farmers got together to thresh grain, bundling and shocking the crop and bringing it all to the threshing machine where the final harvesting process took place.

Earl is survived by his children Robert (Lois ) Espeland of Denver, CO, Ronald (Rose) Espeland of Bismarck, ND, Debra (Mark) Grandgenett of Alexandria, MN, Kevin Espeland of Pierre, SD, Karen Espeland of Sioux Falls, SD, brother Marvin ( Beverley) Espeland of Rapid City, SD, and sisters Dorothy Espeland of San Francisco, CA, and Joyce (Don) Frevert of DesMoines, IA, 9 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Violet, sisters Gladys Anderson and Ellen Wessel.

Organist will be Marilyn Brockel.

Casketbearers are Randy Hanson, Roy Wessel, Bud Anderson, Lorraine Anderson, Marlin Schlomer, and Marion Schlomer.

Honorary bearers are All Earl's Family and Friends.

Clergy is Rev. Dennis Fonkert.

Forrest "Bud" King

Funeral services for Forrest "Bud" King 83 of Blunt SD will be Saturday at 11:00 AM at the school gym in Blunt SD. Rev Bart Bartel officiating. Burial will be in the Blunt Cemetery. A prayer service will be held Friday at 7:00 PM at the Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre. Visitation will be Friday beginning at 5:00 PM at the Feigum Funeral Home. Bud passed away February 2, 2010 at Pierre, SD Ripley Memorial Chapel Gettysburg is in charge of arrangements.

Forrest J. "Bud" King was born September 6, 1926 to Forrest D. and Frances (Lomica) King in Chamberlain, South Dakota. He grew up on a ranch north of Philip, SD and attended rural grade school in Hawkin County. On December 19, 1944 Bud entered the US Army and served until November 9, 1945. Following his discharge he returned to South Dakota and took a job with the railroad at Blunt, SD. He worked for the rail road for only a short time when more or less by accident he found himself working for the Korkow Family in 1947. For the next 51 years he kept the Korkow Trucks rolling down the road. Bud could fix anything with a pliers or screw driver and kept everything running on the ranch. Besides driving truck and doing mechanic work Bud also enjoyed working with the Bucking stock. After he hauled the stock to the rodeo you would find Bud behind the chutes working as a flank man. Bud knew all of the Korkow stock intimately and had a special knack for calmly handling the stock and knowing how to flank them to get them to buck their best. Bud always rooted for the stock, and was responsible for having more world champion cowboys get bucked off than anybody.

On August 28, 1949 Bud married Dona Borden at the Church of Christ in Blunt, SD. They lived and raised their family in Blunt. In 2004 Bud and Dona moved to Hot Springs so that he was closer to his doctors. In 2007 he became a resident of the Castle Manor Care Center in Hot Springs and in January of 2009 Bud and Dona moved to Pierre where he was a resident of the Golden Living Center in Pierre where he resided until the time of his death.

Forrest is survived by wife Dona of Pierre, sons Forrest C. "Buddy" (Lori) King of Blunt, and Edward (Denea) King of Pierre, daughters Enola (Lyle Snyder) King of Rapid City, Jo (Gale) Harkless of Hot Springs, Helen (Gary) Anderson of Blunt, Nyleen Royka of Blunt, Dolores (John) Irvine of Blunt, Kristi "Sammi" (Dean) Haney of Oklahoma City, OK, three brothers Lowell King of Blunt, Bob King of Huron, Garry King of Sheridan, WY, 21 grandchildren, and 32 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters Delores O'Connor, Mary Ellen Wipf, Marilyn Miller, one brother Chuck King, one son-in-law Mike Royla, one daughter-in-law Cookie King, an infant sister, and one infant grandson.

Casketbearers will be Jim Thompson, Don Korkow, Jim Korkow, Steve Millard, Kenny Millard, Dick Herman, Bob Fuchs, and Dave Ping.

Honorary casketbearers will be All Grand and Great Grand Kids.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Hospice in Pierre.

A eulogy will be given by Dr. Barry Bender.

Special music will be by Gary Anderson and he will sing "The Old Rugged Cross" and Cindy Neuman will sing "Wind Beneath My Wings" and Special recordings will be "Daddy's Hands" and "Round Up in The Sky"

The pianist will be Jennifer Anderson and Julie Schultz.

The ushers are Swede Larson and Rich Ping.

Lydia Gehring

Funeral services for Lydia Gehring, age 89, of McIntosh, will be at 2 PM MT, on Friday, January 29, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in McIntosh. Burial will be in the McIntosh Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Visitation will start at noon CT on Thursday with a prayer service at 6 PM CT at the funeral home. Lydia passed away Thursday, January 21, 2010 at the Linton Hospital in Linton, ND.

Lydia (Moser) Gehring was born May 17, 1920 to William and Justina (Schweigert) Moser in the Anethal Community, which is 12 miles south of Watauga, SD. She was baptized in 1938 in the Baptist Church. Lydia attended Hanson Country School south of McIntosh. She helped on the farm, worked for Axtel’s Ranch, and cooked for the hired help. From there she met her husband John Gehring who was a sheep herder. Lydia came down with “TB” and was sent to Santor, SD to recoup for one whole year.

She and John married in McIntosh in 1940. They moved to Colorado, where they were employed by a farmer. Their first daughter was born and they moved to Washington State, from there they began their cannery employment. Shortly after living in Washington State they moved back to South Dakota, where they rented a ranch south of McIntosh (DeVelde Ranch). They bought the McGee Ranch southeast of McIntosh in 1945. For 56 years Lydia helped John on the farm and in the Cabinet making business.

In her retirement years, Lydia was active in church, ladies aid, and teaching Sunday school. She also liked crocheting in her spare time,

gardening, flowers, making dumplings, bread, and love knots, spending time with her family and friends. Lydia moved into the nursing home in November 2004, after a car accident.

Lydia is survived by children Charlotte (Don) Moser of McLaughlin, Joyce (David) Frazier of Woodbury, TN, Dennis of McIntosh, Donna (Don) Mott of Morgan Hill, CA, Curtis (Annette) of McIntosh, and Dwight “Fritz” (Rita) of Tioga, ND, two brothers Milbert (Darlene) Moser of Rupert, ID, Edwin Moser of Woodburn, OR, five sisters Helen Schulz of Mobridge, Irene (Johnny) Heinrich of Elk Grove, CA, Violet Bronson of Sioux Falls, Clara Stoecker of Mobridge, and Shirley (Loven) Stoecker, nineteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by parents William and Justina, husband John, sisters Edna Scholl and Mildred Smith, one great grandchild, brothers-in-law Rudy Schulz, Edwin Scholl, Gene Bronson, and Lloyd Smith.

Casketbearers are Douglas Moser, Chad Moser, John David Frazier, Charles Frazier, Craig Gehring, Tim Gehring, Jonah Gehring, Matt Gehring, Shane Gehring, Kris Mott, Nick Mott, Casey Mott, Joel Moser, and Jacob Baumeister.

Honorary Casketbearers are Doctor Ron Wagner, Doctor Mark Monasky, Marvin Bertsch, Rev. Richard Mayforth, Pastor David Ling, and All Staff at the Good Samaritan of Selby.

Organist will be Corrine Arnold.

Elvera Seibel

Funeral services for Elvera Seibel, age 78, of Herreid will be at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Mound City. Burial will be at the Mound City Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be on Tuesday starting at 4 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at the funeral home. Elvera passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Avera Eureka Nursing Home with her family at her side. She was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in August, 2009.

Elvera Esther Ford Seibel was born in Herreid, SD to Eugene and Emma Riesche Ford on October 17, 1931. She attended grade school at a rural country school.

On April 14, 1957, she married Elmer Seibel. They rented a farm outside of Herreid, where they made their home. They lived on several farms in the Herreid-Mound City area where they farmed, raised cattle and milked cows. Together they had five children. After her children went to college, she did after school childcare. Elvera worked for Senftner Chevrolet from 1984 to 1994.

Elvera was a loving mother and grandmother. Her children were always her first priority. She was at all of their activities. Even though she didn't have a lot to offer financially, they never lacked for anything. Her greatest success was sending all five of her children to four year colleges. She took great joy in their accomplishments and those of her grandchildren. She taught them to work hard to achieve their dreams. She loved to spend time with her family. She enjoyed riding bike, swimming, and playing cards, especially with her grandchildren.

Elvera was a life long member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mound City. She loved music and had a strong faith in the Lord.

She leaves behind five children; three daughters and their spouses: Peggy and Marlin Schlomer of Windsor, CO, Kathy and Richard Grassa of Tea, SD, and MaryAnn Seibel of Redwood Shores, CA; two sons, Kenn Seibel of Erie, CO, and Rick Seibel of Lennox, SD; five grandchildren, Teresa Schlomer of Windsor, CO, Erica Schlomer of Windsor, CO, Kristen Grassa of Tea, SD, Matthew Seibel of Lennox, SD, and Patrick Grassa of Tea, SD; four brothers: Ervin Ford of Herreid, Albertus Ford of Mobridge, Milton Ford of Aberdeen, and Lester Ford of Daveport, IA; one sister: Lavina Iverson of Ellendale, ND.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Seibel, infant daughter, Carol, her parents and a brother, Orville.

Shirley Stroup

Memorial services for Shirley Stroup, 74 of Gettysburg will at 10:30 AM Thursday January 28, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Gettysburg. Inurnment will be at the Gettysburg City Cemetery under the direction of Ripley Memorial Chapel of Gettysburg. A Prayer service will be at 7 PM with a memorial visitation starting at 5 PM at the church on Wednesday. Mrs. Stroup passed away January 18, 2010 at the Compassionate Care Hospice in Faulkton.

Ralph "Doc" Pesicka

Funeral services for Ralph Harlan “Doc” Pesicka, Sr. 88, of Dupree, SD will be 10:00 AM, MT Monday, January 25 at the Pioneer Hall in Dupree. Visitation will be on Friday, January 22 at Kesling Funeral Home starting at 12:00 PM till 4:00 PM. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Mr. Pesicka passed away Monday, January 18, 2010 at the Mobridge Hospital.

Doc was born January 10, 1922 on the family homestead 9 miles northwest of Dupree in Ziebach County, South Dakota to George and L. Edna (Place) Pesicka. Ralph grew up on the family homestead, attending the High Point School in rural Ziebach County, finishing the 8th grade. At age 14 he left home to work as a ranch hand and herded sheep for Sofus Brams in the LaPlant and Ridgeview areas.

In 1942 Doc enlisted in the Signal Corp. Reserve and took his training in Aberdeen, South Dakota. It was there he met the love of his life L. Lillian Weeks. The couple married January 10, 1943 in Aberdeen. They lived in Aberdeen and Minneapolis for a short time where Doc finished his Signal Corp. training. He was called to active duty and transferred to the Air Force, taking his basic training at Sheppard Field, Texas. After training Doc was sent to Sioux Falls, SD as a radio instructor. Lillie, Bill & Ralph Jr. joined him there for a short time before Doc was sent to Truax Field, Wisconsin for more radio school, receiving an honorable discharge there on November 25, 1945.

After his discharge the family moved back to Aberdeen and then to North Dakota where Doc worked at a grain mill. Edna Kay & Linda Jean joined the family during this time.

In the fall of 1949 Doc & Lillie moved their family to Ziebach County to make their home. Where Doc engaged in farming and worked for the Davis Gas Co in Dupree. Richard Wayne was born during this time.

In the mid 1950’s Doc and Lillie moved into Dupree. In 1958 Doc ran on the Republican ticket for Ziebach Co Auditor taking in office in 1959. He served in that position until 1971. Doc also served 45 years as County Civil Defense Director, 40 years as county Veteran Service Officer, as county Assessor, a deputy Clerk of Courts, a justice of the peace and was custodian at the court house for many years.

Doc was a member of St. Philips Episcopal Church and a lifetime member of Post #124 of the American Legion in Dupree, SD.

Doc liked country music, dancing and playing cards, visiting with friends and spending time with his family.

He leaves to celebrate his life his wife of 67 years, Lillie Pesicka of Mobridge, SD, two sons, Ralph Jr. (Norma) Pesicka of Timber Lake, SD, Richard “Dick” (Jeanne) Pesicka of Renton, Washington, daughters; Patsy Woolery of Aberdeen, SD, Edna Kay (Ken) Bunn of Grand Ronde, Oregon, and Linda (Ole) Keehner of Rapid City, SD. Sixteen grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren, one brother Donald “Pat” Pesicka of Dupree, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents George & Edna Pesicka, brothers; Mike, Lawrence, Dick and Lee, Sisters, Barbara Eaton, Francis Holder, and Maxine Pesicka and great grandson Martin Ole Dethleff.

Casketbearers will be Tom Keehner, Terry Taylor, Kenny Hertel, Tom Sell, Jerry White, C.J. Pesicka.

Honorary Casketbearers are all county commissioners, court house employees and all Doc's many friends.

Patrick "Pat Peterson

Funeral services for Patrick “Pat” Peterson age 91, of Aberdeen and formerly Timber Lake will be Monday at 10:30 AM MST at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. Burial will be in the Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. A Prayer service will be Sunday at 7:00 PM MST at the Church. Visitation will begin at 6:00 PM MST Sunday at the Church. Mr. Peterson passed away January 13, 2010 at the Bethesda Home in Aberdeen.
Patrick ‘Pat’ Peterson was born March 5, 1918 in Sturgis, SD to Orville Simon and Mary Ellen (Gorman) Peterson. Pat’s parents ranched near Ekalaka, MT. Shortly before Pat was born, his father took his mother by horse and buggy to Belle Fourche, SD. His parents then traveled by train to Sturgis, SD, where Pat was born. After his birth the return trip to the ranch in Ekalaka was made the same way only this time in pouring rain. Pat grew up on the ranch near Ekalaka. He attended the rural Foster School, where he graduated from the 8th grade. Following his education he worked as a ranch hand for area ranchers. During the thirties, he was in Civilian Conservation Corp and was part of the workforce that built the Fort Peck Dam in eastern Montana. Later Pat and his brother Gorman moved to Sturgis where they worked as night clerks at the Fruth Hotel. On October 12, 1942 he and Gorman enlisted in the Army Air Corps at Ft. Meade. On February 21, 1946 he was honorably discharged. He then returned to South Dakota and began ranching with his brother Gorman east of Rapid City. In fall of 1946 he moved to a ranch 25 miles south of Morristown, SD. On December 18, 1948 he married Garnet Lyons in McIntosh, SD. They then moved to the Mike O'Keefe Ranch south of Timber Lake. The spring of May 1951, Pat and his brother Gorman purchased the Loren Butler ranch on the Grand River and established the PB Ranch, which they operated together until 1972. On December 18, 1987, Pat and Garnet sold the ranch and began a working partnership with Les and Marcia Lindskov. Pat and Garnet left their Grand River home in 2003, and have made their home with their daughter Pat in Aberdeen. At the time of his death Pat was a resident of the Bethesda Nursing Home.

Pat is survived by wife Garnet Peterson of Aberdeen, two daughters Pat Derzab of Aberdeen and Christie Peterson of Minneapolis, MN, sister Patricia Bowlby of Rapid City, SD three grandchildren David Derzab of Aberdeen, Sonja (Jeremiah) Holman of Aberdeen, John (Catherine) Derzab of Rapid City, four great grandchildren Xander and Madalynn Holman and Evan and Camdyn Derzab, special nephews; Tom Peterson of Aberdeen, and Jerry (Marla) Peterson of Rapid City , Mike (Kim) Bowlby, Terry (Deb) Bowlby special nieces Mary (Lynn) Tsjeerdsma, and special great nieces Shay and Rachel Peterson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gorman, sister-in-law May, brother-in-law George Bowlby.

Bella Brooke Lester

Funeral services for Bella Lester 16 of McLaughlin will be at 11 AM CT, Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the Red Gym in Cannonball. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. An all night wake will be Thursday at the Blue Gym in McLaughlin with services at 7PM, CT. An all night wake Friday night will be at the Red Gym in Cannonball with services at 7 PM, CT. Bella passed away January 9, 2010 at her home in McLaughlin, SD.

Bella Brooke Lester was born on May 3, 1993 in Bismarck, ND to Walter Lester Sr. and Tonda (Yellow Hammer) White Lance. She grew up in Bismarck and Cannonball. In 2008 Bella and her family moved to McLaughlin where she has since resided. She most recently attended school in McLaughlin and was currently working towards her GED at Sitting Bull College in McLaughlin.

Bella enjoyed listening to music, playing basketball, and especially hanging out with friends. She will always be remembered as a dedicated auntie to her nephew Zamiah Lester.

Bella is survived by parents Titus and Tonda White Lance of McLaughlin, and Walter Lester, Sr. of Mandan, ND, one sister Trisha Lester of McLaughlin, two brothers Walter Jr. and Brent Lester of McLaughlin, one special nephew Zamiah Lester, grandparents Bella Ann Lester of Montana, Gabe Plante of Montana, one aunt Cheryl Loans Arrow of Bismarck, one uncle, Darren Loans Arrow of Grafton, ND cousins, Amy and Lawrence Bear King of Bismarck, Sierra Black Hoop of Bismarck, nieces Isabelle and Annabel Bear King, and many aunt, uncles, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by great grandparents Mary Paints Brown, and Asa Lester, Sr., grandparent’s Charles Lester, Sr., Asa Lester, Jr., Sam Lester, Floyd Stretches, Ronald and Bernadine Yellow Hammer Sr., Romance Wise Spirit, auntie, Laura Ramsey, uncles, T.C. Ramsey, Robert Conica, Arthur Yellow Hammer, Jared Wise Spirit, and Burton Lester.

Gordon Johnson

Funeral services for Gordon Johnson, age 90, of Mobridge will be at 10:30 AM, Thursday, January 14, 2010 at the UCC Church in Mobridge. Pastor Dave Heintzleman will be officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 3 PM on Wednesday with a prayer service at 7:30 PM at the funeral home. Gordon passed away Saturday, January 9, 2010 at his home in Mobridge.

Gordon W. Johnson was born on July 19, 1919 to Axel E. “Buffalo” and Pearl J. (Stewart) Johnson at the old Mobridge hospital in Mobridge, SD. Gordon grew up on the family farm west river and attended school in McLaughlin graduating in 1939. Gordon joined the US Army in 1942. During his military service he was a boatswain with the 532nd Boat and Shore Regiment. He served in the South Pacific and drove a PT boat. He was Honorably Discharged in 1945 and returned home.

On June 8, 1947 he married Donna Belle Van Orman at the old UCC Church in Mobridge. Following their marriage he and Donna Belle headed west with their trailer home and settled in Oregon. They lived in Oregon for 46 years until moving back to Mobridge in 1993 where they have since resided. While in Oregon, Gordon worked for the US Postal Service as a letter carrier for 30 years before retiring in 1978.

Gordon was an avid rodeo fan, always attending all the rodeos he could make it to. When he was younger his family raised rodeo livestock in which he helped take part in. Gordon’s other passion was carpentry. When he wasn’t building houses he was building furniture or helping to repair and restore houses. Gordon also enjoyed years of traveling and camping with Donna and his children, also his grandchildren in later years. With his continuing projects, Gordon never worked on Sunday’s because that was his day for faith and family.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the National Association of Letter Carriers- Branch 916 (NALC).

Gordon is survived by his wife Donna Belle Johnson of Mobridge, son, Douglas D. Johnson of Winslow, AZ; two daughters, Trudy D. Johnson of Rural Little Eagle, SD and Linda R. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Kenneth, Robert and Delbert, sisters, Alice (John) Aberle and Ione (Billy) Mudge.

Casketbearers will be Karl Van Orman, Clint Rose, Allen Johnson, Stuart Johnson, Quentin Van Orman, and Kyle Goodshield.

Honorary Bearers will be all Gordon’s brothers and brother-in-laws.

Memorials may be directed to the Mobridge Library Building Fund.
