Originally of the Mennonite church, she became an active member of Grace United Methodist Church and focused her interests on issues promoting the cause of peace and justice and the betterment of the environment.
She was also a member of the local chapter of the American Interprofessional Institute and the Women and Literature Group. Her love of literature, music and art was important throughout her life. She interwove these passions with her frequent travels to visit family, friends, or to see new and interesting places. Wherever she was, her appreciation of the environment gave her great pleasure, the Loess Hills of the Sioux City area being one of her favorite places to spend time.

A funeral was held on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Mt. Olivet Mennonite Church in Huron with Rev. Dr. Leslie Pearson officiating and Rev. Carl Jantz participating. Rose was born Aug. 7, 1910 to Dr. Traugott and Mary (Wurz) Arbeiter and lived on a farm near Dolton. She attended the Silver Lake Mennonite Church under Rev. J. J Adrian's leadership and who was often mentioned when she spoke of her spiritual roots. She attended grade school in Dolton, and at the age of nine she moved with her family to a farm near Cavour, where she attended Sheffield school near Cavour and Bethel Mennonite Church near Yale. It was at a meeting held by Rev. D. M. Hofer at Bethel Mennonite Church that she was convicted of her sin by the Holy Spirit and quietly accepted Christ as her personal Savior.
On Dec. 29, 1928, she married John J. A. Hofer at Emmanuel Mennonite Church with the Rev. P. P. Kleinsasser, uncle of the groom, officiating. Their first home was a farm near Carpenter, and in 1942 they moved to a farm near Huron. They were charter members of the Mt. Olivet Mennonite Church in Huron where Rose taught a girls Sunday school class for 10 years and donated many hours during the construction of the new sanctuary in 1959. Rose was her father's first and last assistant in his chiropractic office. She was an invaluable helper on the family farm and also worked several years for Armour & Company.
In 1959, John and Rose moved to Fresno, Calif., where they were members of the Mennonite Community Church. A Bible study led by Mary Jane Warkentin was a great source of joy for her. In 1977, they moved to Turlock Covenant Village in Turlock, Calif. Her husband died June 28, 1987, in Turlock, and Rose moved to Bethany Covenant Village in Minneapolis in September, 1998, to be closer to her daughter, Rozella.
Rose celebrated her 90th birthday Aug. 7, 2000, with family and friends in North Carolina, Minnesota and South Dakota. She loved flowers, reading, crocheting, painting in oils, and creating "tatting note" cards. She prayed faithfully for her children, her two sons-in-law and the churches they served, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and especially for her grandson, Jared Jantz and family, who was serving as administrator with New Tribes Mission in Asuncion, Paraguay, South America. It was a particularly meaningful experience to have the memorial gifts from her husband's funeral used for the first Bible in the Ache Indian language, a Paraguayan mountain tribe which was close to Jared's heart since he had the privilege of making contact with them while on a missions trip to Paraguay during his senior year in high school.
Rose is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Rozella (Rev. Dr. Leslie B.) Pearson, Rochester, Minn. and Linda Jones, Ocala, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mabel (Joseph) Arbeiter, Mrs. June (Edward) Arbeiter, and Mrs. Maggie (Clarence )Hofer; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
