Florin Hemminger, 83

Florin W. Hemminger, 83, Pierre, passed away Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at McKennan Select Specialty Hospital, in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, with a 7 p.m. prayer and Masonic service that is open to the public at the Masonic Building in Pierre. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, in Pierre. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Pierre.

Florin was born May 15, 1925, at Highmore, to Floyd and Audrey (Morford) Hemminger. He attended all eight grades of school in rural Hyde County. He attended four years of high school at the South Dakota School of Agriculture at South Dakota State College at Brookings, graduating in 1943. Florin farmed with his father and brother until 1945, when he joined the Navy, assigned as a Seabee in a construction battalion serving in the Philippine Islands. His farming skills were used for operating large equipment to rebuild roads and runways. Florin farmed from 1947 to 1954 near Highmore and Harrold.

On Aug. 16, 1950, he and Marian Krull were married in Harrold. Linda Sue was born in 1952, and they moved to Pierre in August 1954.

Florin was employed at the Pierre Power Plant, Friman Oil Co., and the United States Postal Service. He began his own window business in 1962, which grew to F.W. Hemminger Building and Supply, a statewide home improvement icon. Florin continued to work his business until his death.

Florin was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Pierre, former Pierre JCs, Kiwanis — where he had perfect attendance for the past 33 years and was named Kiwanian of the Year several years and received the Kiwanis Distinguished Service Award, VFW, Elks, American Legion, and Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce serving on the agri-interest committee.

Worshipful Brother Florin W. Hemminger was a Mason for 59 years. He was a member and past master in Harrold and also a member in Pierre. Over the last 50-plus years of Masonry, Worshipful Brother Hemminger was an active member of many Masonic organizations, including Scottish Rite, York Rite, Shrine and Order of Eastern Star. Worshipful Brother Hemminger is a past most illustrious grand master of the Grand Council of Cryptic Masons of South Dakota, past grand commander of the Grand Commander of Knights Templar of South Dakota, past grand high priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of South Dakota, grand trustee emeritus of the Grand Lodge of South Dakota. Other Masonic organizations that Worshipful Brother Hemminger belonged to are Red Cross of Constantine, Knight of the York Cross of Honor, Order of the High Priesthood, Order of Thrice Illustrious Master, Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests, Masonic Veterans’ Association and South Dakota Masonic Lodge of Research.

Florin was a leader and admired for his can-do attitude. Thus, he held leadership positions in many organizations which benefited from his vision and willingness to always take on tough challenges. He was known as someone who was always helping others to accomplish their goals, whether it was to help a child receive medical care at a Shriner’s Hospital, make certain that the Shrine Circus was successful, deliver meals-on-wheels, visit nursing home or veteran’s home residents, assist friends to attend church or other events or help his granddaughters catch an elusive salmon in the Missouri River. He was happiest when with family and close friends and when helping others.

Florin is survived by Marian, his wife of 58 and a half years, of Pierre; daughter, Linda Hemminger Fisher, and her husband, Martin, of Adair, Iowa; three granddaughters, Livia Fisher, of Sioux Falls, and Laine and Lynae Fisher, of Adair, Iowa; sisters-in-law Betty Krull and Arlene Hemminger; nephews Kim, Kip (Deb), and Keith (Lynda) Krull, Don (Sandi) Hemminger, Randy (Ida) and Rick (Wendy) Johnson; nieces Dixie (Mike) Volek, Judy (Steve) Thiesse, Roberta Tingle, Jolynn (Scott) Kuhn; and many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews and numerous close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Vira in infancy, and Vionna Johnson and brother-in-law Ivan, brother, Howard Hemminger, brother-in-law Louis Krull, mother-in-law Esther Krull Hoard and great-nephew Winston Hemminger.

Todd McCullough, 41

Todd Michael McCullough passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, in Des Moines, Iowa, at the home of his sister, Aimee, surrounded by family.

Todd had a lifelong passion for weight lifting and always loved ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Wars.’

In later years he found the Discovery and History channels fascinating.

Todd deeply appreciated the unflagging support of his mother, who was beside him through the six weeks surrounding the operation to remove his voice box last spring, and who was with him constantly through the final two months of his battle with throat cancer.

Todd will be missed by his mother, Linda (Pete) Obermeier; his sister, Tammy, and niece, Amanda (Josh) Burcks, all of Pierre; and his sister Aimee VanderMark; his daughter, Nicole McCullough; nieces, Dakota Mattos and Shelby Spencer; nephews, Jason Mattos and Benjimin Spencer; father, Larry McCullough; uncles, Michael Spencer, Vick and Jim McCullough; and his grandmother, Dorthy Mccullough.

Memorials may be sent to your local Hospice.

Roger Erickson, 66

Roger “Mick” Erickson, 66, Sturgis, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at Sturgis Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Gussie Erickson, Sturgis; his children, Lora, Erickson, Sioux Falls, Michael Erickson, Pierre, Diane Solaas and Daniel Solaas, both of Sturgis; two brothers, Jim Erickson, Rapid City, and Lynn Erickson, Pierre; and two granddaughters.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

Dora Walters, 89

Dora I. (Hall) Voorhes Walters, 89, of Pierre, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at St. Mary’s TCU.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 31, at Christ Episcopal Church in Gettysburg with a luncheon at the Gettysburg Senior Center. Inurnment will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mesa, Ariz., at a later date.

Dora I. Hall was born Jan. 18, 1920, to Leon Ernest and Susan J. (Barr) Hall in Potter County, the middle of nine children. She graduated from Presentation College in 1943 as a registered nurse. Dora worked as a supervisor at St. Luke’s Hospital, the Miller Hospital in St. Paul and the Cheyenne Agency Hospital. She also worked for many years and was well known in the Potter County area as the nurse at the Gettysburg Clinic and Gettysburg Hospital.

Dora was united in marriage in 1943 to Boyd (Buster) Voorhes. A son, Rick, was born to this union in 1947. Dora married Robert (Bob) Walters in 1970 and they made their home in DeSmet. She continued her nursing career working as the director of nurses in the DeSmet Nursing Home and the DeSmet Hospital.

In 1976, Dora retired and she and Bob moved to Kansas City, where they lived until Bob retired in 1981, when they moved to Mesa, Ariz. After Bob’s death in 1998, she returned to South Dakota to be near her son’s family in Pierre.

While living in Mesa, Dora was very proud to have served as a Stephen minister for the Episcopal Church. She also loved to crochet and do counter cross stitch and made many baby blankets, booties and sweaters for her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Dora is survived by her son, Rick (Denise) Voorhes, of Pierre; step-sons: Greg, Don and Mark Walters; her grandson, Mark Voorhes, of Laramie, Wyo.; her granddaughter, Anne Voorhes, of St. Paul, Minn.; and her sister, Catherine Wahle, of Custer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Buster and Bob, five brothers: Floyd, Orie, George, Alvin and Dick; and two sisters: Lavone Fox and Emma Rettig.

Memorials may be directed to Christ Episcopal Church in Gettysburg.

Frances M. Schmitt
Aug. 30, 1924 - Feb. 16, 2009

Frances M. Schmitt, 84, of Hastings, Neb., died Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 am., Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at the First Congregational Untied Church of Christ in Pierre with the Rev. Susan Carr officiating. Interment will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blunt, with arrangements under the direction of the Feigum-VanLith Funeral Home of Pierre.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Frances M. Schmitt was born Aug. 30, 1924, to Margaret (Bucklin) and Samuel Smith in Selby.

As she grew up, Frances lived in several northern South Dakota communities and graduated from Eagle Butte High School in 1942. Following graduation, she enrolled at Northern State Teachers College at Aberdeen. She obtained a two-year teaching certificate and taught at Eagle Butte from 1944-1946. Between those two school years she spent the summer working on the “wing line” of the Renton Washington plant, helping build three B-29 bombers each day. In the fall of 1946, she returned to Northern and completed her Bachelor of Science degree in education, majoring in kindergarten-primary education.

Frances moved to Pierre in 1948 and taught at McKinley Elementary School for three years.

On Sept. 15, 1951, she married John G. Schmitt and became a farm wife on the farm between Blunt and Pierre. To this union, one daughter, Tanya, was born. John was a partner in Ice Spraying Service and Frances very much enjoyed his love of flying. During the mid-’50s, in addition to farming, John and Frances, together with John’s sister and brother-in-law, Marilou and Earl Briggs, ran Briggs and Schmitt Implement the International Harvester Dealership in Pierre. John died July 11, 1964.

In the fall of 1967, Frances returned to teaching in Pierre. She taught three years at Buchanan Elementary School and then transferred to Washington Elementary School, where she taught until retirement in 1987. Frances moved her home to Pierre in 1983, where she lived until moving to the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings, Neb., in 2001 to be closer to her family.

Most of her years were spent teaching first grade. Teaching reading was her passion. She firmly believed that if you could help someone learn to read, you were giving them a key to the world. Her leadership roles and memberships in ACEI, PEA, SDEA, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Annie D. Tallent Club, International Reading Association, Retired Teachers, Pierre Literacy Service and Senior Kinship exemplified her love of teaching.

She was an avid bowler, an Eastern Star past matron, past 4-H leader and very involved in a host of church activities. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Pierre, and an associate member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hastings, Neb.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Tanya and Bill Lindsteadt, of Hastings, Neb.; grandchildren Jill, Jeni and Josh Lindsteadt; her aunt, Helen Johnson, of Plentywood, Mont.; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Mary Smith, of Plentywood, Mont.; brother-in-law Earl Briggs, of Rapid City, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Pierre, or to the Pierre Education Foundation.

Edmund “Jake” Jacobsen
Feb. 9, 1920 - Feb. 15, 2009

Edmund Seaver ‘Jake’ Jacobsen, 89, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at his home in Brookings, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Burial is at St. Thomas More Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, with a 6:30 p.m. wake service at Rude’s Funeral Home.

Edmund S. Jacobsen was born Feb. 9, 1920, in Kobe, Japan, to Edmund L. Jacobsen and Lois (Klein) Jacobsen, who were serving as missionaries. He was the second of five siblings. They returned to South Dakota in 1923, where Jake attended rural school in Peoria Bottom (now under the Oahe Reservoir) northwest of Pierre. He graduated from Pierre High School in 1938, where he was captain of the football team. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from South Dakota State College in 1942. He was united in marriage to Betty Jo Deane on May 28, 1942, in Brookings.

In 1944, Jake enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. The war ended while he was in pilot training in Amarillo, Texas. After serving in the military, he went to work for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks, designing and overseeing construction of facilities for the game department. In 1962, he joined his lifelong friend, Charles Bowman, as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service division of Indian Health.

He designed and oversaw the construction of several water and sewer projects serving Indian Reservations and towns in the Aberdeen, Anchorage, Alaska, and Albuquerque, N.M., area offices. After retirement from the Indian Health Service in New Mexico, he returned to Alaska to work for the state of Alaska’s Village Safe Water Program. In 1987, he retired and moved to Brookings.

Betty Jo died on April 8, 1997, in Sioux Falls. He married long-time family friend, Isabelle Elliott, on Sept. 1, 1998.

He was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, the Brookings Elks, Golden K and served on the Priority One Committee.

Jake was a professional engineer and registered land surveyor. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, RVing, camping, gardening, flying, South Dakota history and crossword puzzles.

Jake is survived by his wife, Isabelle, of Brookings; six sons: Edmund “Joe” (Pat) Jacobsen, of Pierre, Harry (Joanne) Jacobsen, of Brookings, James Jacobsen, of Anchorage, Alaska, Scott (Susan) Jacobsen, of Cottage Grove, Minn., Peter (Dani) Jacobsen, of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Paul (Kathy) Jacobsen, of Olathe, Kan.; two stepsons: Burt (Elaine) Elliott, of Aberdeen, and Bernie (Brenda) Elliott, of Oakdale, Minn.; two step-daughters: Sheryl Novacek, of Thief River Falls, Minn., and Randee (Jeff) Hudson, of Antioch, Ill.; stepdaughter-in-law Donna Elliott, of Watertown; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Lois Doner, of West Lebanon, N.H.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Betty Jo; sister, Phyllis; brothers, Eric and Lewis; stepson William Elliott Jr.; and granddaughter, Jennifer.

Dennis Parks
April 27, 1942 - Feb. 9, 2009

Dennis Parks, 66, of Pierre, died Monday, Feb. 9, at his home in Pierre. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 13, at Isburg Funeral Chapel. Services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 14, at Isburg Funeral Chapel, with burial at Riverside Cemetery.

Dennis Parks was born April 27, 1942, in Hay Springs, Neb., to Melvin and Helen (Brasch) Parks. He grew up in Chadron and North Platte, Neb., before moving to Kimball, Neb., where he graduated high school. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Dennis worked as a police officer in Chadron, Neb., and Torrington, Wyo.; he was also a security guard for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. While in Wyoming he also worked on the missile sites.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Ondriezek in Black Hawk on June 27, 1964.

In 1969, they moved to Pierre, where Dennis was on the Pierre police force and later worked for the state of South Dakota.

Dennis loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed building model trains and just being outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Pierre; son, Phillip Parks and wife Mandy, of Fargo, N.D.; daughter, Donna K. Parks (Kevin Krietman), of Pierre; three grandchildren: twins Nathaniel and Matthew Parks and Riyah Parks, of Fargo, N.D.; two sisters: Ruth Foudray (Robert), of Rapid City and June Noah (Dean), of San Dimes, Calif.; and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, one niece and one nephew.

Louis P. Fratzke
March 24, 1925 - Feb. 10, 2009

Louis P. Fratzke, 83, of Pierre, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 15, at Isburg Funeral Chapel with Masonic service beginning at 7 p.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 16, at Isburg Funeral Chapel. Inurnment will take place at Riverside Memorial Park in Aberdeen at a later date.

Louis Paul Fratzke was born March 24, 1925, in Fairbank, Iowa, to George and Bertha (Busse) Fratzke. He grew up in Aberdeen and graduated from Central High School. He then joined the Marine Corps during World War II, where he served with the 4th Marine Division. He made landings on Roi Namur, Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima.

Following the war, he married Mary Lou Bolan on Aug. 28, 1946, in Aberdeen. They started their family in Aberdeen. He worked with his father at Fratzke Sheet Metal and Heating. He was then recalled to serve with the Marines during the Korean Conflict. He returned home and joined the South Dakota National Guard. He retired from the National Guard after 42 years as a C.W.O.4.

Louis was a trooper with the South Dakota Highway Patrol; he retired after 25 years as a captain. He worked as a court security officer at the Federal Building in Pierre.

Community and service were always important to Louis. He was a member of the Masons, the Shriners, Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, Highway Patrol Association, the Marine Corps League, 4th Marine Division Association and 1st Marine Division Association.

Louis is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, of Pierre; his son, Scott (Joy) Fratzke, of Vermillion; three daughters: Charlene Laird, of Brookings, Paula (Skip Halfacre) Fratzke, of Blackstone, Va., and Lori Gibson, of Sioux City, Iowa; four grandsons; two granddaughters; one great-grandson; numerous nieces and nephews and a state full of friends and co-workers. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Craig, a grandson, Aaron, two brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the Shrine Hospital or to Countryside Hospice.

Louella Bryant, 64

Louella C. “Barb” Bryant, 64, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at Maryhouse Nursing Home in Pierre.

Visitation will be at 2 p.m., today, at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at George Boom Funeral Home with burial to follow at Hills of Rest Memorial Park.

Louella C. “Barb” Behr was born April 11, 1944, the daughter of Edwin and Golda (Erwin) Behr in Ellsworth, Minn. She attended school in Ellsworth and Benson, Minn.

On Feb. 14, 1981, Louella was united in marriage with Doanld G. Bryant in Winfred. She worked at John Morrell & Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1992. After the couple moved to Pierre, Louella worked at the Capital Journal newspaper for two years as an inserter.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Donald, of Pierre; a son, Darrel Middlen, of Sioux Falls; a step-son, James (Wendy) Bryant, of Gordon, Minn.; three sisters, Marriann Sundga, of Sioux Falls, France (Donald) Jahnson, of Tea, and Phyllis (Charles) Danielson, of Sioux Falls; three brothers, Lyland (Sonna) Behr, of Luverne, Minn., Clifford (Helen) Behr, of Brainerd, Minn., and Ronald (Nelva) Behr, of Hills, Minn.; a grandson, Cameron Bryant, of Gordon, Minn.; a granddaughter, Cailey Bryant; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Everett and Lavern.
