Jon Todd, 66
May 16, 1939 - January 6, 2006
Funeral services for Jon Larry Todd were held and he was buried in the National Cemetery in Biloxi, Miss.
Jon was born May 16, 1939, in Ladoga, Ind. He was a long time resident of the Coast. He was a graduate of Indiana University and retired as a major after 21 years in the US Air Force.
He died Friday, Jan. 6, at Biloxi at the age of 66 years.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia Ann Friedrich, daughter of Margaret Friedrich, Parkston, and the late Frank Friedrich; two sons, Jeff and wife, Lindsay, Austin, Texas, Jason and wife, Elizabeth, Columbus, Miss.; and one daughter, Becky, Biloxi, Miss.; four grandchildren, Sara, Katherine, Mathew and Emma; one brother, Don; and one sister, Jeanie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Colette Oberembt, 84
August 15, 1921 - December 28, 2005
Services for Colette M. Oberembt were held Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Paul-Louis Arts, pastor officiating.
Burial was made in the Calvary Cemetery with Larkin Northside Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Colette was born on August 15, 1921 to Mathias and Katherine (Jung) Oberembt in Dimock. She settled with her family in Sioux City. She attended the Cathedral Grade School and graduated from the Cathedral High School in 1938. She graduated from Briar Cliff College (now University) in 1942 and began her social work career in Sioux City. She later went on to graduate school and received her M.S.W. degree from the University of Washington.
She moved to Milwaukee and began her medical social work career as supervisor of the social service department of the Milwaukee County General Hospital. She was later associated with the rehabilitation department of the Marquette University Medical College and also served as an instructor in the area of social services at Marquette. She was then appointed assistant professor in the department of preventative medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She retired from that position in 1986.
She was active in her field and well known in Milwaukee for her service on a variety of city, county and private boards and committees throughout the community. Her contributions to a number of institutions and agencies were recognized when she retired in 1986 by a Milwaukee Mayoral Proclamation citing her accomplishments.
She died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at St. Michael Hospital, Milwaukee, Wis., at the age of 84 years.
She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Paul Kennedy, Chicago, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Maxine Oberembt, Mundelein, Ill.; nieces Sue and Laurie; nephews Randy, Lane and Mark; great-nieces and great-nephews; and a special friend, Claire O’Brien.

Orley Gukeisen, 81
November 19, 1924 - January 22, 2006
Funeral services for Orley Gukeisen were held Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Platte.
Burial was made in the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery with Platte Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Orley was born on November 19, 1924, to Nick and Sophia (Schellenberger) Gukeisen in Platte. He attended school through the eighth grade. He was in the Army during WWII stationed in Japan.
On July 18, 1953, he married Lois Hoeksema in Platte. He farmed near Platte as well as worked for the Platte Creamery and the City of Platte before retiring in 1970.
He was a member of the Legion, the Knights of Columbus, and St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
He died Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Beverly Health Center, at the age of 81 years.
He is survived by two daughters, Deb Bouza and husband, Bob, Parkston, and Dianne Platz, Salem, Ore.; grandchildren, Bobby Jo Hohn and husband, Jason, Sioux Falls, Ben Bouza and wife, Emma, Hawarden, Iowa, Dustin Bouza, Parkston, Shaun and Travis Platz, both of Salem, Ore., Angie Gukeisen, Fergus Falls, Minn., and Amy LeBeck, Park Rapids, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Lilianna ColyerPlatz, Corbin Hohn, Devin Gukeisen, and Bronwyn LeBeck; and one sister, Leona Achilles, Sweethome, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, October 16, 1996; his parents, Nick and Sophia; one son, Doug; and five brothers.

John Boettcher, 97
July 6, 1908 - January 25, 2006
Funeral services for John Boettcher were held Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at 2 p.m., at Hope Lutheran Church, Delmont, with the Rev. Michael Jacobson officiating. Music was furnished by Julie Fillah, soloist, and Ruth Fink, organist.
Interment was made in the Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Delmont, with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Delmont, in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Robert Thomas, Tom Schoenfelder Sr., James Kaufman, Chris Boettscher, Tom Schoenfelder Jr., and Chuck Pekas.
John Boettcher was born July 6, 1908, to Christian and Christina (Kraft) Boettcher on the family farm near Delmont. He attended country school near Delmont through the eighth grade before returning to the family farm to help his parents.
He was united in marriage to Martha Drefs on November 1, 1936, at Delmont. Together they farmed near Delmont until moving into town in 1964. He helped area farmers for a short time before owning and operating his own carpentry business in Delmont, finally retiring at the age of 81 years.
He played in dance bands with his brother, and sang in the church choir.
He died Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Avera Bormann Manor, Parkston, at the age of 97 years.
He is survived by five children, Alan Boettcher and wife, Develle, Clayton, Ind., Gloria Fillah, Royalton, Minn., Carol Alves and husband, Gary, Fremont, Calif., James Boettcher, Parkston, and Kenneth Boettcher and wife, JoAnn, Baltic; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha; a daughter, Eileen Schoenfelder; five brothers; and two sisters.

Clarence Wudel, 97
November 8, 1908 - March 2, 2006
A Celebration of Life service for Clarence V. Wudel was held Monday, March 6, 2006, at 2 p.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Lodi, Calif.
Interment was a private service for the immediate family members. Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Clarence was born November 8, 1908, in Parkston to Louise and Nathaniel Wudel.
After graduation from business college he worked for an independent family business with Standard Oil of Indiana for 22 years. He sold and retired from that business in 1952. That same year, he and his family moved to Lodi, Calif. He retired in 1973 from a second career with the Guild Wine Company in Lodi after 25 years of service.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Church for 53 years.
He died Thursday, March 2, at the age of 97 years.
He is survived by his second wife, Maxine; son, Ronald Wudel and wife, Mary, Gold River, Calif.; two daughters, Diana and husband, Paul Kruper, Kingsburg, Calif., and Judy Wudel and husband, Gary Allen, Woodbridge, Calif.; son, C. Mark Wudel and wife, Holly, Vacaville, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Nathaniel Wudel; first wife, Edna; brothers, Eldon and Gerald; and a sister, Bernice Schlenker.

Anna (Ahrendt) Buehner, 93
January 10, 1913 - March 7, 2006
Funeral services for Anna Buehner were held Saturday, March 11, 2006, at 10 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, Parkston, with the Rev. Kenneth Soyk and Anthony Ahrendt officiating. Music was furnished by Alexandra Kruse, soloist, Pam Kruse, pianist, and Bev Scheetz, organist.
Interment was made in the St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, Clayton, with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Brad Buehner, Kevin Buehner, Tim Huber, Tom Buehner, Randy Ahrendt, and Robert Buchman.
Anna Buehner was born January 10, 1913, to William and Mary (Harnisch) Ahrendt at Clayton. She attended Clayton Public School for five years and St. Peter’s Parochial School for three years. She held various jobs in the Clayton area including working in the Clayton Store.
She was united in marriage to Carl Buehner on October 10, 1942. Together they farmed in the Clayton area for many years.
She was a member of the LWML at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Clayton and later at Faith Lutheran Church in Parkston.
She died Tuesday, March 7, at Avera St. Benedict Hospital, Parkston, at the age of 93 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol Hieb and husband, Stan, Tripp; four step-children, Lucille Franklin, Honolulu, Hawaii, Dennis Buehner and wife, Janice, Clayton, Kenneth Buehner and wife, Lois, Tripp, and Ronald Buehner and wife, Jean, Clayton; one sister, Alma Huber, Sheldon, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl; two step-sons, Carl and Robert; two brothers, William and Albert; and five sisters, Ella, Emma, Esther, Mary, and Edna.

Fredrick Thury, 60
November 16, 1945 - March 6, 2006
A memorial service for Fredrick H. Thury was held March 9, 2006, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. A memorial service will be scheduled later in Parkston.
Fredrick Thury was born November 16, 1945, in Parkston to Paul and Mary (Polreis) Thury. He attended Sacred Heart Grade School, Parkston, the Pontificial College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, graduated from St. Mary’s College, Winona, Minn., and earned a masters degree in theater arts from USD, Vermillion.
He married Terri Kuhl on May 27, 1972.
He died March 6 at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronoto, after a 22-year struggle with leukemia and the aftermath of his treatments. He attained the age 60 years.
His last work as playwright and composer was a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors, titled Comedy Errors, which opened Friday, March 10, at the Vanier College Studio Theatre in Toronto.
He was the author of many children’s plays, including Nuts & Bolts & Rusty Things, Folk Tales Around the World, Behind the Wrinkles, and Nose to Nose (Young People’s Theatre); he was also the author of the children’s book The Last Straw (1999).
He wrote the libretto for a theatre version of The Last Straw, performed by the Toronto Children’s Chorus and recorded a Christmas album titled Along the Road to Bethlehem. The illustrated children’s book has had great success, and has been translated into more than seven langauges.
He, also an actor and director, came to York University in 1970 to teach acting in the Vanier College course program where he inspired the development of inventive theatre productions.
Outside of York, he staged numerous productions, including the 1988 Olympic torch relay from Signal Hill, Newfoundland, to Calgary, Alberta, events at Massey (Toronto), and Carnegie (New York City) halls, extravaganzas for symphony orchestras, and productions for Soundstream.
He is survived by his wife, Terri; two daughters, Jennifer Alexis, New York City, and Sara Meaghen, Toronto; three brothers, Clarence, Parkston, Rev. Gerald, Tyndall, Joel, Omaha, Neb.; and four sisters, Betty Fergen, Ethan, Joan Fideler, Tucson, Ariz., Jean Severin, Omaha, Neb., and Karen Stein, Underwood, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary (Polreis) Thury; five brothers, and one sister.

Elvira (Luebke) Battcher, 88
August 7, 1917 - March 14, 2006
Funeral services for Elvira Battcher were held Friday, March 17, 2006, at 11 a.m., at American Lutheran Church, Gaylord, Minn., with Pastor Paul Kratzke officiating. Music was furnished by Delores Jackson, organist.
Interment was made in the Gaylord Municipal Cemetery with Egesdal Funeral Home, Gaylord, in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Mark Bening, John Bening, Blake Battcher, Eric Muller, Colin Duesing, and Garry Blockhus.
Elvira Anna Emilie (Luebke) Battcher was born on August 7, 1917, in rural Douglas County, South Dakota. She was the daughter of John and Bertha (Pietz) Luebke. She was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth, both at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Dimock, by Pastor Peter Tecklenburg. She received her education at rural grade school and later at the high school in Parkston.
She was united in marriage to Elmer Battcher on April 20, 1938, by Pastor Peter Tecklenburg at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Dimock. After their marriage, the couple farmed the home farm in Dryden Township, Sibley County, Minn., until 1980 when they moved into Gaylord. Elmer passed away on June 13, 2001.
She was a member of American Lutheran Church in Gaylord, where she was active with the Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, and held offices on the local, conference and district level. She taught Sunday School, and for many years was involved with the church’s quilt making for Lutheran World Relief.
She often helped in the community with the blood bank and belonged to the Home Extension group.
She entered the Gaylord Lakeview Home in June of 2001.
She died Tuesday, March 14, at the age of 88 years.
She is survived by her children, Jeanette Bening and husband, Eugene, Hutchinson, Minn., David Battcher and wife, Birdine, Gaylord, Minn., Cheryl Moore and husband, Ron, Normal, Ill., and Daniel Battcher and wife, Suzanne, Cedar Falls, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Joyce Battcher-Malchow and husband, Doug, Minneapolis, Minn.; son-in-law, Wayne Rousseau, New Braunfels, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margarete Plamp, Parkston, and Lois Banton, Kirkland, Wash.; sister-in-law, Margarete Luebke, Sioux Falls; brother-in-law, Archie Battcher and wife, CeCelia, Gaylord, Minn.; many nieces, nephews; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Bertha Luebke; brother, Roland Luebke; son, LeRoy Battcher; daughter, Virginia Rousseau; and grandson, Brian Bening.

Elise (Sedlezky) Walz, 93
April 25, 1912 - March 6, 2006
Funeral services for Elise Walz were held Friday, March 10, 2006, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Freeman, with the Rev. Jeffrey Pautz officiating. Music was furnished by Rebecca Roth, soloist, and Sarah Schaeffer, organist.
Interment was made in the Unity Lutheran Cemetery. Casketbearers were Dell Thomas, Gaylen Roth, Tom Roth, Charlie O’Coy, Darin Roth, and Jared Thedorff.
Elise Sedlezky Roth Walz, daughter of William and Amelia Sedlezky, was born April 25, 1912, on a farm near Menno. She was baptized at Heilbron Lutheran Church and confirmed at Heilbron Church.
On June 18, 1931, she was united in marriage with Lehart Roth. They made their home on a farm near Milltown and later farmed in the Parkston area. Lehart passed away January 11, 1977. In 1985, she married Henry Walz. Henry passed away December 16, 1991. She then moved into an apartment until 2004 when she moved to the Salem Home for the Aged.
She played piano. In her younger years, she was an organist in the church for several years.
She died March 6 at the age of 93 years and 11 months.
She is survived by one daughter, Lillian and husband, Harley Thomas; four sons, Arnold and wife, Sieglinda Roth, Clifford and wife, Rose Roth, Jerry and wife, Janice Roth, Daryll and wife, Mystee Roth; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; nephews, nieces, and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lehart and Henry; one daughter, Violet Lewis; one granddaughter, Carla Roth; her parents; her sister, Helen Mueller; and brother, Edwin Sedlezky.
