Harvey Hoff, 75
Died June 29, 2012
A memorial service for Harvey G. Hoff was held July 14, at the River Center, Lebanon.
A private inurnment was at the Lebanon I00F Cemetery.
Harvey was born in Parkston. He played baseball and graduated from Tripp High School.
He enlisted in the Army Sept. 8, 1955, and served 41 years, before retiring in 1996.
He married Mary Robertson Dec. 1, 1990, in Lebanon.
He was an active member of the American Legion Santiam Post 51.
He died Friday, June 29, at his home. He attained the age of 75 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, Lebanon; sons, Tim (Lucretia) Hoff, Austin Tex., and Mike Hoff, Lebanon; daughter, Angela (Rod) Kau, Lebanon; mother, Edna Hoff, Tripp; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Gertrude Jumps, 89
Died June 29, 2012
Services and interment for Gertrude P. Jumps was held July 10 at Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Femley.
She died June 29, 2012. She attained the age of 89 years.
She is survived by her son, Charles R. Jumps; brother, Milo (Donna) Pietz, Huron; sister, Arlene Preszler, Menno; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Tobe Luebe, Pierce, Neb.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Arlene Jumps, Auberry, Calif.

Melvin Freier, 86
January 14, 1926 - July 1, 2012
Funeral services for Melvin Robert Freier were held on July 5 at Resthaven Funeral Home, Lubbock, Tex.
Melvin was born on a farm in southeastern South Dakota Jan. 14, 1926, near Delmont.
Melvin’s grandfather, Phillip, immigrated from Germany and Russia in search of tillable land. When Melvin was in the eighth grade at the age of 14, he left school to run the family farm for his father. He ran the farm until 1960, when he sold the farm and moved the family to Artesia, N.M.
He joined the U.S. Army at the age of 18, during World War II. He served as a guard at the Nuremberg trials, due to his fluency in German.
In Artesia, he found employment at Central Valley Electric and spent 30 years surveying power lines. He retired in 1990 and moved to Las Cruces and then to Lubbock.
He was a Little League coach and manager. He was a member of the Elks Club and Moose Lodge in Artesia. He is a past president of the Lion’s Club in Artesia.
He died July 1 at the Grace House in Lubbock, Tex. He attained the age of 86 years.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Jean Tyler Freier, Lubbock; brother, Maynard Freier, Minneapolis, Minn.; daughter, Patty Freier, Lubbock; son, Kent Freier, Los Lunas, N.M.; and two granddaughters, Tayna and Tara Freier, Albuquerque, N.M.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Emma Freier; and a sister, Dolores Brosz.

Gary Jung, 63
May 2, 1949 - May 15, 2012
Gary Patrick Jung was born May 2, 1949, the son of Cletus and Elizabeth (Garrett) Jung in Minot, N.D.
After the death of his father, he took over the family farm, supporting his brothers, sisters and mother.
He died May 15, 2012, at the age of 63, on the family farm in Norwich, N.D.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Linda (Brunner) Jung; six sons, Ezra (Karen) Jung; Aaron (Randi) Jung, Nathan (Hayley) Jung, Daniel (Christy) Jung and Tyler Jung, along with their mother Elizabeth (Betty) Jung, Minot, N.D.; 14 grandchildren; brothers Bryce Jung and Neal Jung; sisters Janey Jung, Joyce (Ron) Solberg, Donna (Terry) Medler, Meredith Jung, Delores Pilch, Ann Taft and and Anita Reich; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and the donor family of Jessica Ann Escobedo.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Cletus Jung, who was a former Dimock resident, and stepfather Emil Eman; grandparents Mathew and Minnie (Schlimgen) Jung and Wallace and Alice (Albrecht) Garrett.

William “Bill” M. Pierson, 77
December 17, 1934 - July 31, 2012
William “Bill” Martin Pierson, 77, Mitchell, died Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Funeral services were Aug. 3, 2012, 10 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery in Ethan.
He was born Dec. 17, 1934 in Mitchell to Alex and Stella (Westwood) Pierson. He graduated from Ethan High School in 1952. On Nov. 24, 1952, he married Margaret Sibson at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell.
Bill grew up farming the land and raising cattle with his father and eventually assumed the family farm. He and Margaret raised seven children in the same home where he grew up. He retired from farming in 2000. He and Margaret enjoyed winters in Arizona and traveled much of the year, exploring places such as France, Germany, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii. They continued to spend their summers east of Ethan until five years ago, when they purchased a townhome in Mitchell. Bill enjoyed camping, fishing and lawn games and always was up for a good game of “Pinochle” or “Bridge.” The sight of Bill gliding across the dance floor while ballroom or square dancing with his bride in his arms was a beauty to all.
“Daddy” was a hardworking, Christian man who always delighted in visits from his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His love for his family was obvious by the gleam in his eyes and his wide, bright smile, which always lead to a hearty chuckle and a “yeah, yeah!”
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Mitchell; seven children, Rich (Kris) Pierson of Washington, Iowa; Deb (Al) Jennings of Spearfish; Dan (Mary) Pierson of Merrill, Iowa; Dean (Nancy) Pierson of Brandon; Denise (Mike) Royston of Ethan; Rod (Lisa) Pierson of Dell Rapids; and Ray (Ann) Pierson of Sioux Falls; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Catherine Kurtenbach of Colorado; Violet Koutz of Minnesota; Georgia (Herb) Sibson of Ft. Pierre and Alice Friedel of Gettysburg; his wife’s siblings: David (Joyce) Sibson of Mitchell; Jean Danielson of Rapid City and a sister-in-law, Dolores Sibson of Mitchell.
He is preceded in death by his parents and six brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.

Delbert Neugebauer, 80
November 4, 1931 - September 5, 2012
Funeral service for Delbert Walter Neugebauer was held Sept. 8 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Dimock.
Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston was in charge of arrangements.
Delbert Walter Neugebauer was born Nov. 4, 1931, to Jerome and Selma (Baier) Neugebauer at Dimock. He was baptized Dec. 13, 1931, and confirmed June 30, 1946, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flensburg.
He attended Tobin 61 counry school and Ethan Public School through the eighth grade. He began farming with his father until being drafted into the U.S. Army Jan. 15, 1953. After his basic training, he served his country for two years during the Korean War in Frankford, Germany, where he was named soldier of the month. He was honorably discharged Dec. 28, 1954.
He was united in marriage to Marlys Luebke Jan. 22, 1956, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hillside. They farmed west of Dimock until 1963, when they moved to the Luebke family farm, where they continued to farm.
He was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and Berea Society. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, as well as being a member of the Lincoln School number 7 school board.
He died Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston. He attained the age of 80 years.
He is survived by his three children, Brandon (Jeanne) Neugebauer, Mitchell, Renee (Lee) Michael, Mitchell, and Lisa (Glenn) Meyer, Mitchell; eight grandchildren, Kara, Alex, Shawn, Andrea, Marissa, Morgan, Jon and Bob; six great-grandchildren, Vincent, Avery, Audree, Melania, Robert and Kiera; two brothers, Jerome (Mary Ann) Neugebauer Jr., Mobile, Iowa, and William (Dianne) Neugebauer, Dimock; and a sister-in-law, Pearl Neugebauer, Parkston.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marlys; three brothers, Harold, twin brother Don, and Kenneth; and a sister-in-law, Vera Mae.

Priscilla (Beitz) Olsen
June 7,1937 - September 6, 2012
Funeral service for Priscilla A. Olsen, Mitchell, was held Sept. 11 at Zion Lutheran Church, with burial at Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
Priscilla Anna Dorothea Olsen was born at home in rural Kaylor June 7, 1937, to Emil and Emma (Winter) Bietz. She attended school through the eighth grade, and at age 14, moved to Mitchell and worked at Shermer’s Drug. She sent a portion of her earnings back home to help her family. Later, she was employed at Red Owl grocery store.
She was united in marriage to Robert Olsen Sept. 18, 1955. Robert and Priscilla farmed in the Mitchell area. Priscilla was a 4-H leader for over 25 years. One of her highlights of her 4-H leadership career was the National 4-H Leaders Convention in Washington, D.C.
She died Sept. 6 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, Mitchell.
She is survived by her husband; daughter Linda (Robert) Henglefelt, Ethan; two sons, Larry (Dawn) Olsen, Mitchell, and Lance (Kari) Olsen; two brothers, Hubert and Leland Bietz, Mitchell; grandchildren Peggy (C.J.) Prickett, Ryan Henglefelt, Cady Henglefelt, Keith (Tabbatha) Henglefelt, Danielle (Chad) Radel, Hillary (Steven) Hauser, Katlyn Olsen and Kennedy Olsen; great-grandchildren Jadyn Henglefelt, Mikalah, Nathan and Tanner Prickett and Carter Radel.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters Hildor Peterson and Darlene in infancy.

William Grochow, 77
October 9, 1935 - October 10, 2012
A private graveside service for William Joseph Grochow will be held in Rest Lawn Cemetery in Huron, with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston in charge of arrangements.
William Joseph Grochow was born Oct. 9, 1935, to William and Ethel (Pechie) Grochow in Argyle, Minn. He attended Argyle High School and graduated from there in 1953.
He was united in marriage to Lenora Swanson July 12, 1956. They lived in Minnesota and South Dakota, where he worked in meat production and sales. In 1994, he retired and moved to Parkston.
He died Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Avera St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston. He attained the age of 77 years.
He is survived by his wife, Lenora, Parkston; three children, Brad (Shelly) Grochow, Mitchell, DelRay Grochow, Mitchell, and Pam (Ryan) Titze, Mitchell; seven grandchildren, Ryan, Madyson, Kade, Lonie Ann, Jackie, Billy and Danielle; sister, Eileen Horejsh, Thief River Falls, Minn.; and four brothers, Leo Grochow, Cloquet, Minn., Donald (Shirley) Grochow, Thief River Falls, Wilils (Janice) Grochow, Warren, Minn., and Caroll (Sandy) Grochow, Newport, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Lonnie and William; and a brother, George.

Dorothea (Wudel) Heiertz, 85
September 24, 1927 - September 27, 2012
Funeral services for Dorothea C. Heiertz were held Oct. 13 at First United Methodist Church, Sun City, Ariz.
A memorial service will be held in Flandreau at a later date.
Dorothea was born Sept. 24, 1927, at Parkston to John and Emma (Weidenbach) Wudel.
After graduating from Parkston High School, she went on to earn a home economics degree in 1949 from South Dakota State University in Brookings.
She married James Heiertz June 11, 1950, in Parkston. They lived in Mankato, Minn., for two years, where she taught school, before moving to Oelwein, Iowa, in 1952. In 1955, they moved to Flandreau. She was active in church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. She was a leader of Cub and Brownie Scouts and 4-H.
She moved to Sun City, Ariz., after her husband passed away May 11, 1994. While in Sun City, she continued to teach others and was president of several clubs.
She died Thursday, Sept. 27, at her home in Sun City, Ariz. She attained the age of 85 years.
She is survived by her two children, Jill Heiertz, Peoria, Ariz., and James (Cheryl) Heiertz Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Mary, David, Hope, Amy, John and Joanna; one great-granchild, Alson; and a sister, Sylvia Sanders, Greenwood Village, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Lorraine (Davies) Friskey, 88
January 13, 1924 - November 1, 2012
Graveside services for Lorraine M. Friskey were held Nov. 6 at Mountain View Cemetery at Lead, with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston in charge of arrangements.
Lorraine M. Friskey was born Jan. 13, 1924, to Ellis and Ida (Leff) Davies in Lead. She attended and graduated from Lead High School. While in high school, she worked as a dime store clerk at Newberry’s in Lead. After Newberry’s closed, she started working as a waitress. Lorraine and a girlfriend traveled to Colorado Springs, Colo., and worked in a restaurant for almost two years before returning to Lead.
On Aug. 31, 1947, she married Raymond Friskey. After their marriage, they travled to Detroit, Mich.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Lead and the Ladies Aid.
She died Thursday, Nov. 1, at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston. She attained the age of 88 years.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Larry Thuringer, Parkston; two grandchildren, Frank (Kim) Thuringer, Sioux Falls; and Jodie Thuringer, Sioux Falls; two great-grandchildren, Allyson and Colin Thuringer, Sioux Falls; and a brother, James, Sun City, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; two daughters, Patricia Thuringer and Carol Rae Smith in infancy; a sister, Arlene; and a brother, John.
