Darwin D. Nuss, 78
June 24, 1935 - September 28, 2013
Funeral services for Darwin Nuss were held Oct. 2 at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Mitchell.
Burial was in the American Legion Cemetery, Mitchell, with Bittner Funeral Chapel of Mitchell in charge of arrangements.
Darwin Delmer Nuss was born to Arthur and Adeline (Fuerst) Nuss June 24, 1935, in Tripp. He attended school in Tripp and graduated from Tripp High School in 1953. He joined the Air Force right out of high school. He was a photographer in the Air Force. After his four years of service, he returned to Mitchell and worked several years as a photographer for the Daily Republic.
He married Shirley Jarabek May 20, 1961.
While working at the newspaper he also managed the Mitchell Moose Lodge for 19 years. Around 1985, he took a job managing the Elks for approximately three years. He then ventured to his Marine business. He worked at Dakota Pork, and after retiring, he ran the Marine business full-time. He sold his Marine business to help and aid Mitchell Vo-Tech in the motor sports area, retiring in June 2010. He also drove for the railroad transport service until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge since 1967, receiving the highest honor of the Pilgrim Degree in May 1983. He also was a member of the American Legion and the Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
He died Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. He attained the age of 78 years.
He is survived by his five children, Randy (Faithe), Mannington, W.V., Lisa (Glen) Weber, Tim, Jeff (Donna) and Stephanie (Steven) Kirkes, all of Mitchell; sisters, Sally (Jack) Tucek, Platte, Karen (Dan) Weber, Tripp, Gloria (Chuck) Oorlog, North Sioux City, Neb., and Debbie (Todd) Kenworthy, Sandpoint, Idaho; brother, Dale (Jan) Nuss, N.H.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.

John T. Malloy 85
January 10, 1928 - November 9, 2013
John T. Malloy, 85, Elk Point, passed away at Prairie Estates Care Center of Elk Point Nov. 9.
A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m., Nov. 16, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Fr. David Roehrich officiating. A visitation was held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Burial of his ashes will take place at a later date as John has chosen to donate his remains to science.
John was born Jan. 10, 1928, in the living quarters of the Milwaukee Railroad Depot to John and Pauline (Kozel) Malloy.
John grew up in Tabor and graduated from Tabor High School in 1945.
John followed in his father’s footsteps as a station agent. He began his career at the ripe age of 16 due to shortages of agents during WWII. John retired from the Milwaukee Railroad Co. after working for 34 years between Tabor, Trent and Vermillion.
On Oct. 2, 1951, John was united in marriage with Mavis Syrovatka in Tabor. John was a staunch Democrat who never passed up an opportunity to share his views on the subject of politics. He also was an avid hunter--particularly ducks, pheasants and deer. Some of his other hobbies included Pinochle, watching the Twins and Vikings play, automobiles, taxidermy and especially eating Mavis’ cooking.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mavis Malloy of Elk Point; his children, Glenn (Linda) Malloy of Sioux Falls, Donna (Frank) Phillips of Longwood, Florida, Bob (Kris) Malloy of Parkston, John J. (fiance: Deb) Malloy of Sioux City, Iowa, and Jodi (Dan) Sampson of Owatonna, Minnesota; his 13 grandchildren; and his three great-grandchildren, with one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Pauline Malloy; and his brother, Paul Malloy.
Memorials will be donated to the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historical District and the Elk Point Historical Society.
Services were entrusted to the Kober Funeral Home of Elk Point.

Clifford Konrad, 85
December 21, 1928 - February 9, 2014
Funeral services for Clifford Arthur Konrad were held Feb. 14 at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Tripp. Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, was in charge of arrangements.
Clifford Arthur Konrad was born Dec. 21, 1928, at home in Hutchinson County to Philip and Anna (Bietz) Konrad. He was baptized Jan. 20, 1929, in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Kaylor, with Gustave and Emma Kurtz as his sponsors.
On Oct. 31, 1943, he was confirmed by Rev. Fuchs. He attended school in Kaylor and farmed with his dad.
He was united in marriage to Norma Schnabel Nov. 26, 1950, at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Tripp.
In 1951, he was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1953. After serving his country, he farmed in the Tripp area until 1957, when they purchased a dairy farm near Royalton, Minn. In 1961, they moved to Parkston, where he managed the Starlite Lanes. In 1968, they moved to Mitchell, where he managed the Village Bowl for 25 years.
In 2002, they purchased a house in Kaylor, where he and Norma retired.
He died Sunday, Feb. 9, at Avera St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston. He attained the age of 85 years.
He is survived by his wife, Norma, Parkston; two sons, Paul (Laurie) Konrad, Lake Poinsett and Daniel (Diane) Konrad, Winchester, Tenn.; two daughters, Kathryn (Ron) Olson, Pierre, and Joan (Dennis) Mercer, Baltimore, Md.; nine grandchildren, Ben (Angie) Konrad, Joshua (Lindsey) Konrad, Hilary (Jake) Torres, Ryan Olson, Kara Olson, Alexis Konrad, Matthew Konrad, Derek Mercer and Devon Mercer; six great-grandchildren, Lillian Konrad, Ava Torres, Halle Konrad, Addy Konrad, Hazel Mercer and Gannon Collins; five siblings, Melvin (Lavonne) Konrad, Mitchell, Ken (Gay Lynn) Konrad, Kaylor, Millie Guericke, Scotland, Esther Kremer, Scotland, and Alice (Marvin) Suess, Portland, Ore.; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Elmer; two brothers-in-law, Reuben Guericke and Doug Kremer, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Konrad.

Kristen Kae Walz-Brink, 45
September 1, 1968 - March 14, 2014
Memorial service for Kristen (Krissy) Kae Walz-Brink was held March 21 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Dimock, with the Rev. Dana Christensen officiating.
Kristen Kae Walz was born Sept. 1, 1968, to Allen and Joyce (Ritter) Walz in Aberdeen. She was raised and educated in Dimock.
She married Tony Brink Aug. 26, 2006. The couple resided in Parkston.
She died Friday, March 14, at the Dougherty Hospice Home in Sioux Falls. She attained the age of 45 years.
She is survived by her husband, Tony; one sister, Patrese (Ryan) Waterfall, Milbank; one brother, Patrick (Kristy) Walz, Holmen, Wisc.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Allen and Joyce (Ritter) Walz.

Eldon Garvis, 76
May 26, 1937 - February 19, 2014
Memorial services for Eldon Garvis were held March 8 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell.
Burial was in the American Legion Cemetery with military rites. Will Funeral Chapel of Mitchell was in charge of arrangements.
Eldon John Garvis, son of Homer and Helen (Degen) Garvis, was born May 26, 1937, in Ethan. He attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Ethan High School in 1955. In February 1956, he joined the U.S. Marines and was honorably discharged in 1958.
After returning from the service, he had various jobs mostly with law enforcement agencies. In 1967, he began working with the U.S. Immigration Service. He spent several years working in the Seattle, Wash., area. Later, he was with the United States Border Patrol at the Havre, Mont., crossing. He retired in 1998.
He died Feb. 19, at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center, Bullhead City, Ariz. He attained the age of 76 years.
He is survived by his son, Josh Blaine, Wash.; brother, Don (Janette) Garvis, Ethan; three sisters, Joan Garvis, Cle Elum, Wash., Mary (Pat) Shevlin, Columbus, Neb., and Ruth Daley, Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Elaine; and brother, Charles.

Darlene (Juhnke) Doering, 72
March 21, 1941 - March 19, 2014
Funeral services for Darlene (Juhnke) Doering were held March 24 at Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne, Minn.
Burial was in the Parkston Protestant Cemetery in Parkston, with Hartquist Funeral Home in Luverne in charge of arrangements.
Darlene (Juhnke) Doering was born March 21, 1941, in Parkston to Theodore and Selina (Tiede) Juhnke. She attended school in the Parkston area and later worked as a babysitter and part-time at Dairy Products, Inc.
On Aug. 27, 1961, she married Marvin Doering at the United Church of Christ in Parkston. The couple moved to Luverne, Minn., in the fall of 1968, She began her career at the Mary Jane Brown Nursing Home, where she worked in the laundry department. She retired 33 years later in 2001.
She was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne. She sang in the chancel choir and taught Sunday School for many years. She belonged to a ladies church circle and volunteered on Fridays folding bulletins.
On Jan. 27, 2014, she moved into the Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne. She died Wednesday, March 19, at the age of 72 years, 11 months, and 27 days.
She is survived by her husband, Marvin, Luverne, Minn.; brother, Clinton (Nadine) Juhnke, Parkston; sister, Marjean (Jim) Apland, Bel Air, MD.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Selina and Theodore Juhnke; and a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Delphine Juhnke.

Leonard Weisz, 77
April 4, 1937 - July 31, 2014
Funeral services for Leonard Weisz were held Aug. 4 at Salem United Church of Christ in Parkston, with burial in the Parkston Protestant Cemetery. Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, were in charge of the arrangements.
Leonard Millard Weisz was born April 4, 1937, to Theodore and Hattie Weisz. He completed the eighth grade at a country school in the Kaylor area. On July 8, 1960, Leonard and LaVonne Suess were united in marriage in Scotland. He worked for the Kaylor Locker for several years before the couple moved to Freeman. He was employed by AMPI for 36 years, first delivering milk to the Parkston Creamery, and then for the Freeman AMPI Creamery for the duration of his career. In the mid-60s, the couple returned to Parkston, first living in town and eventually moving to a small farm. He served in the National Guard for many years. Following his retirement from AMPI, he delivered milk to the Dimock Cheese Factory, while at the same time, he drove school bus for Parkston School District. His wife died Sept. 16, 1985.
In November of 1995, Leonard underwent a heart transplant at the University Hospital in St. Paul, Minn.
Leonard died Thursday, July 31, at the Daugherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls at the age of 77.
He is survived by his daughters Brenda (Bruce) Bormann, Eaton, Colo., and Tara (Steven) Wilber, Brookings; sons Douglas (Ita) Weisz, Green Bay, Wisc., Darren Weisz, Sioux Falls, and Todd (Shawn) Weisz, Parkston; grandchildren Derek (Brittany), Andrew (Cassie) and Ethan Bormann, Katie (Will) Ohman; Samuel, Jayden and Drew Wilber, Alyssa and Hayle Weisz, and Luqman Weisz; his sister Viola Mehlhaff; sisters-in-law Marlene Herman and Sue Suess; brothers-in-law Marvin (Alice) Suess, Maynard Suess, Ron (Barb) Suess, and Gary (Lori) Suess, and a host of neices and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; brother, Elmer, wife, LaVonne, and brothers-in-law Don Herman, Elmer Suess and Melvin Suess, and sister-in-law Barb Suess.

Louis L. Hohn, 89
November 22, 1924 - October 6, 2014
Mass of Christian burial for Louis Hohn was held Oct. 10 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph.
Louis L. Hohn was born Nov. 22, 1924, in Dimock to John C. and Hedwig (Baumgart) Hohn.
On Jan. 6, 1948, he married Victoria C. Laber in Parkston. In 1951, they made their home in Sioux Falls. For the next 31 years, he was employed at the VA Medical Center as a cook, and later, the lead baker. Upon a short retirement, he cooked for the children of St. Joseph Cathedral Grade School for the next 10 years.
He served in World War II as a member of the US Army 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Division Japan from 1945 to 1946. He also was a long-time member of the Moose Lodge, the American Legion Post 15, the VFW Post 628, the DAV and the Active Generations. He was a member of the South Dakota Honor Flight to Washington, DC, on Veteran’s Day in 2010.
He died Monday, Oct. 6, at the Dougherty Hospice House after a brief illness. He attained the age of 89 years.
He is survived by his wife, Victoria; daughters, Joyce (Dennis) Donovan, Patricia (Lewis) Lyon, Mary Lou (Joel) Harmon; and seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Evelyn Lang, Parkston, Gloria Loos, Sioux Falls, and Virginia Binder, Yankton; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Viola; brother, Marlin; and son-in-law, Troy Dubbelde.

Donald W. Bormann, 87
August 25, 1927 - December 3, 2014
Services for Donald W. Bormann were held Dec. 8 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Stickney, with the Rev. April Peterson officiating. Music was furnished by Barb Vliestra, organist
Burial was in the Silver Ridge Cemetery, Stickney. Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Stickney was in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Joel D. Neugebauer, Clark J. Bormann, Gregory F. Bormann, Frederick A. Masoudi, Jonathan F. Masoudi and Sam A.B. Masoudi.
Donald Bormann was born Aug. 25, 1927, at Parkston. He was the son of Fred G. Bormann and Mary (Krause) Bormann. He attended school in Stickney and graduated from Stickney High School. He graduated from Yankton College with a degree in business administration. He served two years in the United States Army during the Korean War. He returned to Stickney, where he was employed at the Farmers State Bank, then moved to Denver, where he was a real estate investor for 32 years.
He married Matilda (Bucky) King Oct. 28, 1993. They spent summers at the ranch and winters in Scottsdale, Ariz. Bucky passed away Aug. 6, 2003. He continued to live at the ranch for several years, moving to Bismarck, N.D., in 2010, where he resided at Touchmark.
He died Dec. 3,at Baptist Care Center, Bismarck, at the age of 87 years.
He is survived by his brother, Ivan, Bismarck; sisters-in-law, Lois and Carol, both of Sioux Falls; brother-in-law, Sam Masoudi, Denver, Colo.; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Gladys Neugebauer, Vernon, Earl, Marvin, Carol Masoudi, and Donna; brother-in-law, Gerhardt Neugebauer; sisters-in-law, Rose and Margaret; and his niece, Sharon Osthus.
