Denise Jensen, age 52, of Springfield, SD passed away at her residence Wednesday afternoon, August 22, 2012. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, August 25, 2012 at St. George's Catholic Church, Scotland, SD with Rev. Matthew Vazhappilly officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery at approximately 1:30 PM Saturday afternoon. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Friday afternoon at the Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Tyndall, SD. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church in Scotland, SD. Pallbearers will be Michael Murphy, Ryan Murphy, Cory Haisch, and Tyler Haisch.

Denise was born on April 23, 1960 to Athniel and Marjorie (Daub) Haisch in Freeman, SD. She married Mike Hento and to this union a son was born, Tanner. For over 20 years, Denise taught in the Avon School District as an English teacher in both the Junior High and High School. She was a member of Assumption BVM Parish in Dante, SD. In 2009, she married Randy Jensen and they moved to Pierre, SD where she was a special education tutor at Buchanan Elementary School. She belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America Court St. Ann's in Pierre. On May 20, 2012, Denise moved to Springfield, SD where she lived until the time of her death. Denise loved the farm, being outdoors, and cats.

Those who will cherish her memory are her son, Tanner Hento and his girlfriend, Sara Boyum, both of Vermillion, SD; her husband, Randy Jensen of Pierre, SD; her two brothers, Patrick Haisch of Gayville, SD and Scott and Denise Haisch of Tea, SD; brother-in-law, Michael Murphy of Watertown, SD; nieces and nephews: Ryan, Kelsey, Cory, Tyler, and Katelyn, and great nephew, Liam Haisch.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and sister, Valerie Murphy in January 2008.

Elmer H. Johnson, age 83, of Yankton, passed away Friday, March 01, 2013 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno, SD. Memorial services will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, March 5, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton. Burial of the cremated remains will be approximately 1:15 PM in the Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, SD. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Elmer Humphrey Johnson was born January 24, 1930 in Freeman, South Dakota to Hans and Emma (Eimerson) Johnson. Elmer went to grade school until the eighth grade where he went to Pleasant Hill School. He left school to help on the farm until his being drafted into the Army in 1952. Elmer started his training at Fort Knox where he also served guard duty at night. Elmer, along with hundreds of others, were shipped to South Korea as an Intelligence Specialist, Jeep Driver and Armed Recon Crewman with the rank of Corporal in the 2nd Recon Company APO 248. He returned to the States with an honorable discharge in 1953. Over the years, after his discharge, Elmer continued farming until he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where he was an auto mechanic for 11 years. Elmer moved back to South Dakota to help others farm until his marriage to Janis (Kolp) Johnson on December 7th, 1979. Elmer worked at Kolbergs for a couple years as a custodian until his being laid off. Elmer became a father for the first time on November 14th, 1983 when his first son Carl was born. He became father again on June 16th, 1985 when his second son Samuel was born to him. Elmer worked for Ray Hackett cleaning the bar Ray owned and landscaping the Hacketts home on Pearl Street in Yankton. Elmer and his wife Janis lived with their sons in Black Burn Apartments on Douglas until 1988 when they moved to 317 Pearl Street where they lived until he was put in the Menno-Olivet Care Center until his death on March 1 2013. He enjoyed helping others which was apparent when he befriended Albert Brue. They worked together for at least two decades tearing apart machines, appliances, and cars for scrap until Al's Death on December 6th, 2012. He loved listening and watching westerns. Elmer's favorite movie was Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. His favorite singer was Hank Williams. He loved the Songs "Waltz Across Texas" by Ernest Tubb, "There's A Tear In My Beer" by Hank Williams, and "Day-O" By Harry Belafonte. His favorite sayings were "That Was A Goat Snort" or "Ufta-naa." when he heard a fart, "Cheese And Crackers" when he swore politely, and he loved building things from wood, metal, especially scrap in which he made toys, and hand built a very fast go-kart, a whirly gig, and foot stool along with other items over the years. Elmer loved animals and hated it when they were mistreated.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Janis Johnson; his sons, Carl Johnson and Samuel Johnson; his sisters: Lou, Alice (LaVern), Mavis (Orv), and Faye and numbers of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Emma Johnson, his sisters, Elsie and Alida, and older brother, George.

He will be remembered and missed dearly by friends and family.

Junell (Buss) Johnston, 44, of Montrose and formerly Irene, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, in a car accident near Humboldt. Services will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Dave Wildermuth officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will be held at a later date. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Urn bearer will be Junell's good friend, Lori Story, Sioux Falls. Honorary pallbearers are her co-workers on the 6th Floor at Sanford Hospital, Sioux Falls.

Junell was born December 26, 1967 to Leroy F. and Dorothy L. (Smith) Buss in Morris, Minnesota. In 1974, Junell moved with her family from Benson, MN to Irene where she attended school and graduated with the class of 1986. She played flute in band, was active in chorus, track, basketball, football stats, and for many years held the Irene High School women's shot-put record. Junell was also a lifeguard and swimming instructor at the Wakonda pool.

After high school Junell attended Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, MN, Mount Marty College in Yankton and graduated from USD, Vermillion with a Bachelor in Education. While in college she worked part-time at Pump -n-Stuff in Irene. In May 1988 she married Todd Swensen of Wakonda and they had two sons, Dustin and Trent. After they divorced she moved to Rapid City and worked at the Gillette Dairy where she met her husband, David Johnston. Junell and Dave were married March 3, 2003 in Yankton. They both drove long-distance truck for five years. She loved to drive, see beautiful landscape and spend time in the truck with her husband.

After driving truck she completed her RN degree and worked at the nursing home in Garretson. The last five years she was employed as an RN on the 6th floor at Sanford Hospital, Sioux Falls. She loved her co-workers like family and enjoyed taking care of her patients. This past summer she bought her first house in Montrose. Junell enjoyed quilting and working on genealogy with her mother, riding her motorcycle, and collecting horse figurines and anything Scooby Doo.

Junell is survived by her husband, David Johnston; children Trent Swensen, Fort Riley, KS, Derek and Amy Seymour, Sturgis; parents Leroy and Dorothy Buss, Irene; sister Dalene (Justin) Schramm and their children Robyn, Macy and Zayne, Yankton; brother Wayne Buss (Tracy Slowey), Irene; grandmother Ella Buss, Fergus Falls, MN; step-daughters Katie Johnston, Summerset and Jennifer (John) Kellsy of Colorado Springs, CO. Dave's family including his mother Linda and step-father Lee, brother Robert Johnston, Morriston, FL, sisters Christian Johnston, Clear Water, FL, Melinda Johnston and Gail Johnston; close friends Lori Story and Eric Gannon as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Junell was preceded in death by her infant son Dustin Swensen, grandparents Harry and Rachel Smith, Donnelly, MN and Albert Buss, Barrett, MN, her Aunt Bergetta Bahr and Uncle Audray Smith.

Josephine Alberta (Schieffer) Kast - Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Josephine Alberta (Schieffer) Kast, 97 years old, died at Avera Sister James Care Center, Friday, January 4th, 2013 in Yankton,SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Monday, January 21, 2013 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Menominee, NE with Rev. David Fulton celebrating and Rev. Timothy Lange concelebrating. Burial will be at St. Boniface Cemetery. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Sunday, January 20, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, SD with a prayer service and rosary at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Her Grandchildren will be pallbearers.

Josephine was born February 8, 1915 to Phillip and Mathilda (Koch) Schieffer. She was baptized at St. Boniface Catholic Church and was a faithful member all her life. She attended St. Boniface Catholic School thru 8th grade. She loved school and commented she would have loved to been a teacher. Her mother past away when she was 3 years old, leaving her and her 3 siblings to be raised by their father. She helped on the family farm until she was old enough to work in Yankton as a housekeeper/nanny.

Josephine married, Julius Kast, her life soulmate, on April 16, 1940 at St Boniface Catholic Church, moving 1 mile down the road from where she grew up. They lived there until moving to Sister James Care Center in late 2000. While at Sister James, she would welcome new residents and appreciated everything the staff did for her and Julius.

Josephine and Julius farmed side by side and often told how at harvest time the babies slept on the horse drawn wagon while they picked corn. They operated a dairy farm, raised pigs and grain crops. Josephine raised chickens every spring with six butchered every Saturday; four for the freezer for the winter and two to fry up for Sunday's family dinner which usually ended up at Grandma Katherine Kast, her loving mother-in-law. There was always room at her table where you enjoyed delicious foods: soup to yummy cookies found in the refrigerator. Josephine raised a large garden and took pride in her flower garden. She loved to sew, especially quilts for her children and grandchildren.

Josephine was a member of St. Boniface Ladies Guild serving as president and the Christian Mothers.

She is survived by her sons, Lawrence (Shirley) Kast of Yankton, SD and Ronald (Diane) Kast of Fordyce, NE; daughters, Charlene Johnson of Omaha, NE and Jolene (Frank) Kralicek of Yankton, SD; grandchildren: Susan (Randy) Uken, Christy Carda, Sharon (John) Kraft, Lisa (Mike) List, Gerard (Kim) Kast, Amy (Jerry) Gustad, Karl Kast (special friend, Katie Langley), Sarah Koza (fiancé, Craig Ball), Frank (Melissa) Kralicek, Jr., and Juliet (Wiatt) Tesch; 22 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Clarence Kast; sisters-in-law: Olivia Kohles, Laverne Kast, Shirley Kast, numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius, granddaughter, Geralyn Kast, her parents, son-in-law, Bruce Johnson, sisters and husbands, Julia and William Giguere and Teresa and Howard Jones, brother, Gregory Schieffer, step-brother and wife, Herman and Arlis Schnieders, step-sister, Johanna Schnieders, in-laws and spouces: Leona and Hugo Sudbeck, Herbert Kast, Mildred and Norbert Wiebelhaus, George and Virginia Kast, Alfred Kast, Anthony Kast, and Allen Kohles.

Betty A. Kirschenman, age 79 of Menno passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, SD. Visitations will be from 5-8 PM, Friday, February 15, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral chapel. Pallbearers will be Martin Nelson, Robert Heckenlaible, Kellin Kirschenman, Gordon Hauck, Mike Hauck, and Gary Hauck.

Betty Ann was born on April 27, 1933 to Daniel and Edith (Frank) Watson. She married LeRoy Kirschenman on October 21, 1953. Betty would have celebrated her 80th birthday party April 27, 2013 and their 60th wedding anniversary October 21, 2013. Betty volunteered at the Menno-Olivet Care Center Auxiliary for 31 years. She was very faithful about being present to their Tuesday morning craft days and spent a lot of her time doing crafts for the auxiliary and also enjoyed doing crafts at home. She eventually became a resident of the Menno-Olivet Care Center in October of 2011 and resided there until her passing on February 14, 2013.

Betty made 90 quilts in her lifetime and made one for each of her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, LeRoy of Menno, SD; daughter, Brenda (Dean) Grussing of St. Paul, MN; son, Darwin Kirschenman (Carol) of Menno, SD; daughter, Belva (Roger) Heckenlaible of Menno, SD; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Minten of Alton, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Velma and infant brother, Willis.

Viola Kreun, age 80, of Alcester, SD and formerly of Yankton, SD, passed away Monday afternoon, October 22, 2012 at the Morningside Manor Nursing Home, Alcester, SD. Memorial services will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, October 25, 2012 at Riverview Reformed Church, Yankton, with Rev. Rod Veldhuizen officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be at a later date. Visitations will be immediately following the service at the church. The Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, is assisting with service details.

Viola was born March 6, 1932 in Rock Valley, Iowa to Dethmer and Johanna (Hendricks) Hubbeling. She married Wayne Kreun on December 29, 1950. They resided in eastern South Dakota their entire married life, moving to Yankton in 1966. They had four children, Randy (Pleasanton NE), Gary (Rapid City, SD), Jeff (Black Hawk, SD) and Bonnie (Northfield, MN).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, two sisters, Grace and Wilhemina, and two brothers, John and Harold. She is survived by her four children, 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, and three sisters: Betty DeHough of Phoenix, AZ, Martha Veldhuizen of Sioux City, IA, and Beverly Kooiker of Wyoming, MI.

Karen Kay Langley, age 66, of Volin (formerly of Yankton) passed away unexpectedly Thursday, January 17, 2013 while on a business trip in Montana.

Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 21st, 2013, at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Shell Knob, Missouri.

Kurt (Desperotto) Donn Lorenz, 58, Yankton, died Friday, February 1, 2013 in his home of natural causes. Memorial Services will be at 2:00 PM, Monday, February 11, 2013 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, SD with Rev. Rick Jensen & Jimmy White officiating. Visitations will begin at 12:00 PM, Monday, February 11, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory.

Kurt was born to Donn and Fern (Krohn) Lorenz in Benson, MN on October 30, 1954. His childhood was spent in Benson wrestling, fishing and hunting. Kurt graduated from Benson High School then moved to Yankton in July of 1974 to work as a maintenance man for TCI. During this time, he married his first wife Connie. Kurt remarried in 1982 to Jorja Stevens and with this union came their daughters, Jamie and Ashley. Kurt spent most of his years collecting and selling antiques. He was full of the knowledge required to do so. Kurt and Jorja eventually opened their own "Flea Market", which fueled his collecting of antiques. He loved spending time on the river, collecting buffalo skulls. Being quite the craftsman, he made the most beautiful jewelry. He had made a few canes or walking sticks out of diamond willows and loved seeking out projects. Kurt enjoyed making cabinets and furniture. "He was just a jack of all trades".

Kurt married Carrie Thomas in 2000. They spent a few years of their marriage in Yankton, and then moved to New Mexico. He absolutely loved it there! While in New Mexico, he had the opportunity to meet some amazing people. He was adopted by Bearheart, Marceles Williams who was Creek Chief and Medicine man. Kurt's adopted name was a great honor. He was called Buffalo Heart because his heart beats as a buffalo. The buffalo served others in many and almost all ways. He was very proud of this and enjoyed service of the Native Americans. In 2007, he and Carrie divorced and he moved back to Yankton to be near his loving family where he adored his grandchildren.

Kurt was an amazing, unique, and giving man. He wanted to help everyone and prayed for everyone. He is finally in a place where his pain can no longer trouble him. He will be missed.

Kurt is survived by his father, Donn Lorenz of Benson MN; his 2 daughters, Jamie (Aaron) Gereaux of Yankton, SD and Ashley (Maurice) Erickson of Fort Stewart, GA; his grandchildren, Damien and Gemma Gereaux and Parris, Nova and Evan Erickson, and nephews, Lucas Lorenz and Andrew Lorenz.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Fern, brother, John Lorenz, grandmothers, grandfathers, and a step sister.

Harry Losing, age 92, of Yankton, SD and formerly of Tyndall, SD, passed away Monday, August 27, 2012 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton. SD. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, August 31, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton, SD, with Rev. Dave Wildermuth officiating. Burial will be at the Yankton Municipal Cemetery, Yankton, SD, with military graveside rites by the Ernest Bowyer VFW Post #791 and the SDARING Honor Guard, Sioux Falls, SD. Visitations will be 5 to 8 PM, Thursday evening, August 30, 2012, with the family present at 7 PM, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, SD and then one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Pallbearers will be Chad Losing, Scott Losing, Ryan Losing, Chandler Losing, Joey Losing, and Robert Chladek.

Harry Losing was born April 2, 1921 in Sweet Grass, Montana to Konrad and Pauline (Stoebner) Losing. He married Hertha Neuharth on July 8, 1948. He managed the Farm Bureau Service, Tyndall, SD for 27 years; he worked as custodian at the Bon Homme County Courthouse, Tyndall, SD for 14 years.

Harry is survived by his loving wife Hertha of 64 years, one son Dennis (Judy) Losing of Marshalltown, IA, one daughter, Betty Losing of Yankton, SD; three grandsons, Chad (Rochelle) Losing of Yankton, SD, Scott (Tammy) Losing, Ryan(Mandy) Losing, of Marshalltown, IA; one granddaughter, Deidra Losing of Yankton, SD; three great grandsons, Chandler, Joey and Ross Losing all of Yankton, SD: and one sister.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters and two brothers.
