Clara S. Bultena

NEWCASTLE, Wyo. — Clara S. Bultena, 81, Newcastle, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Weston County Health Services in Newcastle.

Survivors include her husband, George Bultena, Newcastle.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at Worden Chapel in Newcastle. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Newcastle, with the Rev. Trish Underberg officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newcastle.

Thelma E. Abel

SPEARFISH — Thelma E. Abel, 94, Spearfish, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Thelma Ethel Abel was born to John C. and Mabel Claire (Helfer) Lawler on July 4, 1906, in Thayer County, Hebron, Neb. She was the oldest of 10 children. Thelma attended County High School in Harrison, Neb., working for her board and room throughout high school. After high school, she attended Nebraska State Teachers College at Kearney, Neb. She taught six years in Nebraska and went on to be County Superintendent of Schools of Sioux County, Neb.

June 24, 1936, Thelma married Martin Lyman Abel. In the fall of 1943, they moved to Ekalaka, Mont., to ranch. When her children were school age, there was a shortage of teachers, so Thelma went back to teaching, taking her children with her. She taught for nine years in various county schools. She returned to college to receive her bachelor's degree in education from Black Hills State College in Spearfish. The next year, she took a teaching position in Sundance, Wyo. They sold the ranch and moved to Spearfish in 1964 because of Martin's poor health. Thelma taught remedial reading for five years in the Spearfish Elementary School. In the fall of 1972, they moved to Arizona and made their home in Verde Village, just outside of Cottonwood, Ariz. Martin passed away on Aug. 1, 1975, and Thelma remained in Arizona. When Thelma's health started to fail, she sold her home in Arizona and moved to Spearfish.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Gary, and wife, Ann Abel, of Portland, Ore.; her daughter, Gay, and husband, Bernie Wanhanen, of Spearfish; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren; her brothers, Eugene Lawler of Meeteetse, Wyo., Albert Lawler of Portland, Ore., and Arnold Lawler of Meeteetse, Wyo.; her sisters, Ramona Hornor, Crawford, Neb., Deryce Reed of Belle Fourche, and Laurine Nunn of Apache Junction, Ariz.; her brother-in-law, O.G., and wife, Betty Abel, of Belle Fourche; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin; two sisters; and one brother.

Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish. Burial will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday from 9 a.m. to the time of service.

Memorials may be given to Frontiers for the project No. 4761 Bibles for Tyre.

Mary Jane Eatherton

BELLE FOURCHE — Mary Jane Eatherton, 75, Belle Fourche, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Belle Fourche Long Term Health Care Center.

Survivors include two daughters, Penny Peters and Caroline Kay Flanagan, both of Belle Fourche; one sister, Lucille Schiffner, Belle Fourche; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.

Carl Elk Boy

BISHOP, Calif. — Carl Elk Boy, 52, Bishop, Calif., died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, in Bishop.

Survivors include one daughter, Adelyne Arapahoe, Pine Ridge, S.D.; four sisters, Marie Black Tail Deer and Vera Brings Plenty, both of Pine Ridge, Lula Red Cloud, Hermosa, S.D., and Delia Bear Saves Life, Oglala, S.D.; and three brothers, Winfred Red Cloud, Welch, Minn., and Richard Elk Boy Jr. and Jim Elk Boy, both of Pine Ridge.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Joe Damhorst, S.J., officiating. Burial will be at St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery in Manderson.

Sioux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bessie J. High Pine

WOUNDED KNEE — Bessie J. High Pine, 92, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Pine Ridge Hospital.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara High Pine, Wounded Knee; one son, Harold High Pine, Wounded Knee; 100 grandchildren; and 57 great-grandchildren.

A two-night wake service will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at Church of God in Wounded Knee.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the church, with the Rev. Stan Marble officiating.

Burial will be at Church of God Cemetery in Wounded Knee.

Bertha Montgomery

HOT SPRINGS — Bertha Montgomery, 98, Hot Springs, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Castle Manor Nursing Home in Whitewood.

Arrangements are pending with Isburg-McColley's Chapel in Hot Springs.

Chief Archie Fire Lame Deer

STURGIS — Chief Lame Deer, 65, Sturgis, died Jan. 16, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Chief Lame Deer was born April 10, 1935, at Corn Creek, to Josephine Quick Bear and John Fire Lame Deer, where he grew up with the spiritual teachings and loving guidance of his maternal grandfather, Chief Henry Quick Bear. He attended school at St. Francis Catholic boarding school. He served in the Army in the Korean War as a member of the Airborne. He was a P.O.W. for 18 months. He was later a member of the Special Forces. He was a ranch hand on numerous ranches in South Dakota. He had a brief stint as a rattlesnake exterminator. Upon quitting alcohol dependency in 1971, he worked as an alcohol and drug counselor. Through the Los Angeles Indian Center, he ran a program for Native American offenders imprisoned in both state and Federal institutions in California. He was instrumental in bringing purification ceremonies, native to his tribe, to prisons across the country.

He was an accomplished rodeo rider and Hollywood stuntman. He helped found and run the Santa Barbara Indian Center. For the past 20 years, Chief Lame Deer has traveled the globe teaching Lakota spiritual beliefs and way of life. In his travels, he has met and talked with numerous spiritual leaders including the Dalai Lama and the Pope. He has also helped people of all colors wherever he has been.

Chief Lame Deer was preceded in death by his father, Chief John Fire Lame Deer, and his mother, Josephine Quick Bear.

Survivors include his wife of many years, Sandra Fire; two daughters, Josephine Fire, Santa Paula, Calif., and Sara Fire, Sturgis; two sons, John Fire, Sturgis, and Tobias Fessler, Switzerland; one grandson, Aidan Fire, Santa Paula, Calif.; and one granddaughter, Clarice Fire, Sturgis.

He is also survived by a large extended family to whom he was very close. He will be sorely missed by all.

A two-day wake service will be at the St. Francis Veterans Gym on Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 24 and 25.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with Chief Leonard Crow Dog performing the burial and traditional ceremonies.

Adam Mitzel

MOBRIDGE — Adam Mitzel, 81, Mobridge, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Selby Good Samaritan Center in Selby.

Survivors include his wife, Elenore Mitzel, Mobridge; two daughters, Helen Anderson, Mobridge, and Jan Elsing, Pierre; two sons, Wayne Mitzel, Antioch, Ill., and Ron Mitzel, Glenham; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four sisters, Barbara Welder, Mobridge, Frances Volk, Ipswich, Ellen Gabriel, Sun City, Ariz., and Rose Werlinger, Fargo, N.D.; and two brothers, Joe Mitzel and Leo Mitzel, both of Sun City.

Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, until the conclusion of the prayer service at Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge and also for one hour before services at the church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mobridge, with the Rev. Jerry Ranek and the Rev. Jim Freidrich officiating.

Levi Marvin Peters

RAPID CITY — Levi Marvin Peters, 16, of Rapid City, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at his home.

He was born on May 28, 1984, in Rapid City to Link R. and Barbara (Arguello) Peters. He attended Wilson and Knollwood Elementary Schools, Dakota Middle School and was currently attending Rapid City Central High School and Jefferson Academy. Levi's hobbies included skateboarding, snowboarding, playing the guitar and fishing. He was especially fond of skateboarding and worked especially hard for the approval of the skateboard park in Rapid City.

Survivors include his parents, Barbara (Arguello) Peters and Mike Radlinger of Rapid City; two brothers, Link Peters II and Michael Radlinger II, both of Rapid City; three sisters, Seferina Peters and her fiance, Ramiro Moran, Amanda Peters and Julia Peters, all of Rapid City; maternal grandmother, Della Arguello of Rapid City; maternal grandfather, Joe F. Arguello II of Denver; paternal grandparents, Marvin Jr. and Mona Peters of Rapid City; paternal great-grandfather, Marvin Peters Sr. of Rapid City; and numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, great-aunts, great-uncles and friends. Levi was preceded in death by his father, Link Peters, in 1992; a brother, David Dean, in 1990; and great-grandparents, Robert and Dena Donahey.

Visitation was from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18 at St. Isaac Jogues Church in Rapid City, with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. at the church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Isaac Jogues Church, with the Rev. Pat McCorkell, S.J., as the celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City. A lunch will follow the burial at the Mother Butler Center. A memorial has been established in Levi's name.

Osheim-Catron Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Iona Belle (Kenny) Rick

RAPID CITY — Iona Belle (Kenny) Rick, 84, Rapid City, died at a Rapid City nursing home Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1916, at Herrick, the daughter of William S. and Amanda (Hansen) Slaughter. Iona Belle married Cameron Kenny on July 20, 1934. They owned and operated a hotel/motel in Martin for a number of years. Cameron preceded his wife in death, and in 1964, she married Bud Rick. They lived in Sturgis for a number of years. She was living in Rapid City at the time of her death.

Survivors include a sister, Etta Mae Magstadt, San Jacinto, Calif.; and a number of nieces and nephews, including Jerry Magstadt and his wife, Charlene, Capistrano Beach, Calif., Jo Bogan, Redlands, Calif., Joan Novotny, Black Hawk, Frances Novotny, Hill City, and Max Frescoln, New York City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cameron Kenny, and a son, Sol Kenny.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Martin with the Rev. John Hennessy, S.J., as the celebrant. Inurnment will be at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Martin.

Thelma E. Abel

SPEARFISH — Thelma E. Abel, 94, Spearfish, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.

Survivors include one son, Gary Abel, Portland, Ore.; one daughter, Gay Wanhanen, Spearfish; and several brothers, sisters and grandchildren.

Clayton Schlepp

MOBRIDGE — Clayton Schlepp, 74, Mobridge, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Selby Good Samaritan Center in Selby.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Schlepp, Mobridge; three sons, Darrell Schlepp and Kevin Schlepp, both of Mobridge, and Arlyn Schlepp, Aberdeen; two daughters, Marlys Rau, Selby, and Connie Chestnut, Houston; four grandchildren; one brother, Marvin Schlepp, Aberdeen; and one sister, Ardella Feickert, Rapid City.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the conclusion of a prayer service, which begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge, and for one hour before services at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge, with the Rev. Bryce Fellbaum officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

A.F. 'Butch' Selting

FAULKTON — A.F. "Butch" Selting, 81, Faulkton, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Avera St. Lukes Hospital in Aberdeen.

Survivors include his wife, Bernadine Selting, Faulkton; two sons, Denny Selting, Hermosa, and Ken Selting, Rapid City; two daughters, Donna Parks, Longmont, Colo., and Nancy Peck, Pierre; one stepson, Scott Cordts, Huron; one step-daughter, Georgia Chudd, Littleton, Colo.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and one sister, Genevieve Melius, Faulkton.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Luce Funeral Home in Faulkton, and one hour before services.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at United Church of Faulkton, with the Rev. Lyle Miller officiating. Burial will be at Faulkton Cemetery.

Mary Breecher

PIERRE — Mary Breecher, 82, Pierre, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare Center in Pierre.

Survivors include one son, Ralph Becking, Watertown; four daughters, Beverly Moon, Fort Pierre, Betty Sutcliff, Westwego, La., Karen Donahue, Onida, and Carol Becking, Watertown; three brothers, Frank Rathbun, Chester, Minn., and Ray Rathbun and Gerald Rathbun, both of Fort Pierre; and two sisters, Edith Williamson, Las Vegas, and Louise Westhauser, Sioux Falls.

Visitation will be one hour before services, which will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Pierre., with the Rev. Dale Kutil officiating. Burial will be at Scotty Philip Cemetery in Fort Pierre.
