Beryl E. Dvorak

CUSTER - Beryl E. Dvorak, Custer, died Jan. 2, 2002, at Custer Community Hospital.

She was born on Feb. 2, 1911, to John William Frank and Myrtle Ann Mills Frank at their farm home near Iona, S.D. She was the youngest of three children. She taught at a rural school for a while and married Adolph Dvorak Sept. 6, 1936.

Three children survive. Twins, Wm. Dvorak (Beverly) of Rialto, Calif., Kathryn (James) Sanderson of Custer and Marjorie (Bill) Straight of Grand Junction, Colo. A baby girl, Delores, was born and died in 1946.

She and Adolph moved to five miles north of Custer in 1973, where they lived until Adolph's death Feb. 2, 1987. At this time, she moved to Harney Apartments, where she lived until this past September, when she moved to Rose Haven.

They very much enjoyed rock hunting and traveling in their fifth wheel.

Beryl belonged to Custer Community Church and was active in Mary Martha Circle. She belonged to Senior Citizens and volunteered at the Custer Museum every summer for 20 years.

Beryl is survived by grandchildren Dean (Carla) Sanderson of Louisville, Colo., Allan (Judy) Sanderson of Fort Collins, Colo., and Sheri Hankins of Loveland, Colo., Bobby Dvorak of California, and Carmen (Pete) Dyar of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and great-grandchildren: Matthew, Steven and David Sanderson, Shannon Hankins and Melissa Sanderson, all of Colorado.

Visitation will be at the Rooks-McColley Funeral Home in Custer from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, and services at Custer Community Church at 10 a.m. Saturday Jan. 5, with Pastor Keith Ballinger officiating. Burial will be in the Custer Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Custer Community Church or the Custer Museum.

Knute Olsen

PLATTE - Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church in Platte for Knute Olsen, age 95. Visitation will be at Platte Funeral Chapel from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 4, 2002. Knute died on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Platte Avera Health Center after a brief illness. Platte Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements, with burial at the Torrey Lake Cemetery, north of Platte.

Knute Theodore Olsen was born Nov. 14, 1906, on his parents' farm, which they had homesteaded in 1883. His parents, Knud and Gretha (Ellingsen) Olsen, were Norwegian immigrants. He was the youngest of 11 children. Knute spent all of his growing up years on the same farm. He attended the local schools including the two years of high school offered at Torrey Lake Center. He graduated from Platte High School in 1930.

Knute married Mabel Vold on May 24, 1938, on the Vold homestead, one-half mile away from the Olsen homestead. They lived on the Olsen homestead after their marriage. The Olsen homestead has always remained in the family, and Knute had never moved from his birthplace.

The Olsens were active members of Stavanger, Trinity and Bethel Lutheran churches. Knute was a church officer and served on the Torrey Lake School Board for more than 20 years. He was a Pioneer seed representative for 40 years. Knute was fluent in the Norwegian language and was often asked to interpret Norwegian documents. Knute and Mabel had six children: Oscar, Grace, Theodore, Judi, Ellen and Marie.

Knute lived his faith and believed that the glory and honor belong to God. He will be remembered as a man of integrity who was committed to his Lord, his wife of 63 years, and his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Con, Erner, Julia, Ida, Thomas, Ellen, George, and three infant brothers; his parents-in-law, Sam and Clara Vold; his son Theodore; his daughter Ellen (Olsen) Kourt; and three grandchildren, David Olsen, Samuel Olsen, and Melody Kourt.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel Olsen; son, Oscar and Donna Olsen, Platte; daughters, Grace and Tully Boyce, Sioux Falls, Judi and Larry Birger Sr., Jamestown, N.D., and Marie and Timothy Olson, Rapid City; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Olsen (Theodore), Camano Island, Wash.; and son-in-law, Dennis Kourt (Ellen), Piedmont; his grandchildren, Stephen and Vicky Olsen, Platte, Thomas and Trina Olsen, DeSmet, Linda and Randy Allenbaugh, Cynthia and Lester Walters, and William Olsen, all of Camano Island, Dr. Larry and Jennifer Birger, Albany, N.Y., Dana Kourt, Box Elder, and Jessica Olson, Rapid City; and his great-grandchildren, Samantha, Emily and Karley Olsen, Elizabeth Olsen, Dayton and Dalton Allenbaugh, Trevor Wicken Walters, Jackson, Micaiah and Gregory Knute Birger, and Melody Ellen Kourt.

Kenneth J. Simon

RAPID CITY - Kenneth J. Simon, 79, Rapid City, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at his home in Rapid City.

He was born March 6, 1922, at Gettysburg, S.D., to John and Clara (Killian) Simon and grew up in the Gettysburg area, where he attended rural schools.

He was married to Arlone Kaiser on June 11, 1947, at Gettysburg, S.D. The couple farmed in the Gettysburg area for a time prior to moving to Rapid City in 1955. He was employed with the South Dakota State Cement Plant as an electrician from 1955 to 1985. He was also employed by Industrial Electric and did some landscaping work in the area.

He was a member of the United Steel Workers of America and St. Therese Catholic Church. Kenneth was extremely handy and could fix, make or repair almost anything.

Survivors include two sons, David K. Simon, and Daniel J. Simon, both of Rapid City; a daughter, Dawn Sime and her husband, Tim, Rapid City; one grandson, Brandon Sime, Rapid City; and one sister, Catherine Anderson, Pierre.

He was preceded in death by his wife in November of 1999, and two sisters, Verna and LeVora.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at St. Therese, The Little Flower Catholic Church, with the Rev. Bryan Sorensen as celebrant. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, followed by a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to St. Therese, The Little Flower Catholic Church.

Cleator Chase

SUNDANCE, Wyo. - Cleator Chase, 88, Sundance, died Dec. 31, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Chase, Sundance; two daughters, Leona Perry, Beaver, Ore., and Mary Steinbrecher, rural Sundance; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, S.D., and from noon until the time of the service at the church.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish, with the Rev. Randy Fett officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with full military honors provided by the Sturgis Honor Guard.

Lou Anne Hopkins Weber

RAPID CITY - Lou Anne Hopkins Weber, 68, Rapid City, died at home on December 31, 2001, after an eight-month struggle with cancer, and was with her family and hospice nurse when she died.

She was born May 5, 1934, in Watertown, to James S. Hopkins and Ruth Nickolson Hopkins. She attended schools in Selby and graduated from high school in Gettysburg in 1952. She graduated from the University of Iowa College of Nursing with a bachelor's degree in 1956. In 1993, she graduated from South Dakota State University with a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling.

She was employed at Rapid City Regional Hospital for over 23 years, retiring in 1997. She worked as a Coronary Intensive Care Registered Nurse, and was very active in teaching Advanced Cardiac Life Support and staff nursing education workshops. There are countless families in the area whose lives she has touched, either directly or indirectly, by caring for their loved ones or family members. Lou Anne also had a profound impact on her nursing and hospital colleagues by her years of mentoring and knowledge of caring for the critically ill.

She is survived by four children: Michiko Winona Sandman of Phoenix, Ariz., a flight attendant; John Philip Weber of Rapid City, a registered nurse; Ingrid Margaret Knox of Atlanta, Ga., a mother of two daughters; and Anna Nicole Thares of Minneapolis, Minn., an ultrasound technologist. Her mother, Ruth Hopkins of Pierre; her sister Helen Widenhofer of Billings, Mont.; her sister Barbara Hopkins of Gardner, Mont.; and her brother, Corbin Hopkins of St. Paul, Minn., survive her, as well as five granddaughters and a stepgrandson.

Her father preceded her in death in 1994.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Behrens Funeral Home, with Carmen Timmerman as special speaker.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Hospice of the Hills or the Humane Society.

Lester 'Red' Kaiser

HOT SPRINGS - Lester "Red" Kaiser, 72, of Hot Springs, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Bethesda Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dana Brooks officiating.

Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

Red was born May 1, 1929, at Parmalee, S.D., to Tobias and Pauline (Neiffer) Kaiser, who preceded him in death. His family moved to Hot Springs in 1934, where he attended school and lived the remainder of his life. He was baptized on May 26, 1929, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Norris, S.D., and confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church on May 6, 1945.

Red served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and U.S. Marine Corps in the Korean Conflict. He was a life member of the VFW, DAV and American Legion. For the last several years, he served in the Honor Guard at Hot Springs. He had 32 years of Federal Service with most of it being at the Veterans Administration Center in Hot Springs, retiring in 1986. Red and his family also owned and operated Kaiser Angus Ranch in the '60s and early '70s.

On August 10, 1952, Lester married Dorothy Roline Scott at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Hot Springs. The have two children, Ben S. Kaiser and Karen Kay Kaiser.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; son Ben Kaiser; daughter Karen Kaiser; three grandchildren, Jessica (Chris) Freeman, Toby Kaiser and Andy Kaiser; and two great-grandsons, Kyler and Taigen Freeman. Also his brothers, Eddie Kaiser, Leonard Kaiser, Al "Sonny" Kaiser; and sisters, Esther Schrecengost, Ella White, Lila Mathiot, Dorothy Trommer, Barbara Anderson and Deanna Bauman. He is also survived by aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his older brother, Ben Kaiser, who was killed in action July 20, 1944, in Italy.

A memorial has been established to the Bethesda Lutheran School in Hot Springs.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs.

Jossiye Hobert DuBray

RAPID CITY - Jossiye Hobert DuBray, 60, Rapid City, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Denver.

Survivors include three children, Jossiye DuBray Jr., Chicago, and Mark DuBray and Michelle DuBray, both of South Carolina; four sisters, Amelia Nelson and Marcella Iron Cloud, both of Rapid City, Permillia Prue, Box Elder, and Joan Arguello, Thornton,

Colo.; one brother, Marty Mahrt, Rapid City; and two granddaughters.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Audrey Rasnake

SPEARFISH - Audrey

Rasnake, 79, Spearfish, died Jan. 2, 2002, at Lookout Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include two daughters, Andra Turnbow, Spearfish, and Rebecca Gardner, Fort Pierre; and two sons, Larry Mills, Biloxi, Miss., and John Guilliot, Lakewood, Wash.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

Burnham Clyde (Bing) Loveland

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - Burnham Clyde (Bing) Loveland, 80, Cherry Hill, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001.

Born in Chester, S.D., he was an Army veteran of WWII. He served from 1942 to 1945.

Mr. Loveland worked for Bid-Well in Canton, S.D., as vice president.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine B. (nee Brandenburg), Cherry Hill; loving father of Wayne (Donna) of LaCrosse, Wis., Robert of Kansas City, Mo., Jean Alness (Lon) of Medford, N.J., Jane Doyle (Jim) of Rapid City, S.D.; devoted grandfather of Charles, Timothy and Angela Loveland, Branden and Lindsey Loveland, Andrew and Edward Alness, and Elizabeth and Jimmy Doyle; great-grandchildren Sarah, William and Jonathan; and dear brother Dale of Sioux Falls, S.D.

He was pre-deceased by his son David, parents Fred and Bina Loveland, and sister Lyvonne Sittig.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Dec. 24, in Queen of Heaven Church in Cherry Hill.

Jean Cobb Clark

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Jean Cobb Clark, 76, formerly of Rapid City, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Stanford Hospital in Stanford.

Survivors include her husband, Charles C. Clark Sr., Palo Alto; two sons, Philip H. Hayes and Charles Clark Jr., Palo Alto; one daughter, Susan Edginton, Cedar Falls, Iowa; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be held in Palo Alto.

Memorials may be sent to the Euclid Cobb Scholarship Fund, c/o Jim Haar, Activities Director, Central High School, 433 N. 8th Street, Rapid City, SD 57701.

Arrangements are under the direction of Roller Hapgood & Tinney in Palo Alto.

Roy F. Avery

RAPID CITY - Roy F. Avery, 85, Rapid City, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Amy Avery, Rapid City; one daughter, Doris Link, Rapid City; one son, Gaylord "Ralph" Avery, Rapid City; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Tim Fugman

officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield.

Knute Olsen

PLATTE - Knute Olsen, 95, Platte, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Platte Health Center.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Platte Funeral Chapel, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Platte. Burial will be in Torrey Lake Cemetery.

Cassidy Degnan

BUFFALO GAP - Cassidy Degnan, 5, Buffalo Gap, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001.

Survivors include her parents, Jesse and Kim Degnan of Buffalo Gap.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Home of Hot Springs.
