Alice D. Baird

Redfield -- Alice D. Baird, 96, of Redfield died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Eastern Star Home in Redfield.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Frankfort. The Rev. Donald Barbalace will officiate.

Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery in Frankfort. Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home in Redfield.

Alice Carstensen was born June 20, 1904, to John and Agatha (Nahnsen) Carstensen in Gowrie, Iowa. She grew up near Farnhamville, Iowa, and graduated from Farnhamville High School.

She married Paul Baird on June 30, 1925, on the family farm near Farnhamville. They lived in Frankfort. They wintered in Arizona for 30 years. In 1988, she moved to Redfield and had been at the Eastern Star Home since 1990. He died in 1995.

She was a member of United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Rebeccah Lodge, and American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a charter member of the Happy Hour Extension Club. She was active in the Rural Mail Carriers Association for many years, holding various offices.

She enjoyed crafts, traveling, playing bridge and being active in the community.

Survivors include three sons, John (Marge) Baird of Prescott, Ariz., and Stanley Baird and Berwyn Baird, both of Frankfort; four daughters, Dona Baird of Chico, Calif., Jeanette Meile of Hartford, Judy (George) Hurst of Sioux Falls, and Paula (Dave) Lorenz of Westchester, Pa.; 22 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother and one sister.

Casketbearers will be her grandsons.

Emilia Delzer

Wishek, N.D. -- The funeral for Emilia Delzer, 89, of Wishek and formerly of Ashley, N.D., and Eureka, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Ashley Baptist Church. The Rev. Darwin Stahl and the Rev. Marty Toepke-Floyd will officiate.

Burial will be in the Venturia Baptist cemetery in Venturia, N.D. Carlsen Funeral Home in Ashley is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, all at the funeral home. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

She died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at the Wishek Nursing Home.

Emilia Lutz was born Jan. 11, 1912, to Adam and Caroline (Dohn) Lutz in Greenway. She grew up in Greenway and attended country school.

She married Emil C. Delzer on Nov. 10, 1932, at Greenway. In 1944, they moved to Ashley, where they owned and operated a service station for many years. She began working as a housekeeper and nanny for Dr. Leo and Margaret Cohen in 1951. In 1960, they sold the service station. He died Jan. 20, 1979. She moved to Eureka and made her home in the Lakeview Apartments. In June 1998, she entered the Wishek Nursing Home.

She was a member of Eureka Baptist Church and a past member of Ashley Baptist Church.

She enjoyed quilting, gardening and cooking for others. She was known for her hospitality.

Survivors include one son, Bruce (Phyllis) Delzer of Bismarck, N.D.; two daughters, Leona (Darwin) Werth of Hanover, Calif., and Debra (Bob) Wingenbach of Mandan, N.D.; one brother, Emanuel Lutz of Lodi, Calif.; two sisters, Rose Fischer and Elsie Knoepfle, both of Eureka; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and four sisters.

Casketbearers will be Ian Schmidt of Minot, N.D., Eric Wingenbach and Matthew Wingenbach, both of Mandan, Jeff Becker of Plymouth, Minn., and Glenn Herr and Barrett Herr, both of Wishek.

Newell E. Seeman

Rockham -- The graveside service for Newell E. Seeman, 76, of Rockham will be in Rockham cemetery this week.

His body will be cremated. Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield is in charge of arrangements.

He died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

Newell E. Seeman was born, Nov. 30, 1924, to Lloyd and Dora (Erickson) Seeman in Rockham. He grew up in Rockham and graduated from Rockham High School in 1943. He joined the U.S. Army and served with the 12th Armored Division during World War II. He was honorably discharged on July 22, 1955. He returned to Rockham and worked as a carpenter. He then worked as a rural mail carrier until his retirement.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include one brother, Lloyd Seeman of Oceanside, Calif.; and one sister, Myrt Boyd of Sun City West, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother in infancy.

Esther R. Treichel

Bowdle -- The funeral for Esther R. Treichel, 87, of Bowdle will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Evangel United Methodist Church in Bowdle. The Rev. David Bambas will officiate.

Burial will be in the Bowdle City cemetery. Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

She died Friday, April 6, 2001, at the Bowdle Hospital.

Esther R. Holweger was born Dec. 13, 1913, to Henry and Christina (Holweger) Holweger in Grand Forks County near Emerado, N.D. She was raised in that area and attended rural school. Following her schooling she worked as a hired girl for several neighboring families and later as a cook at the Golden Hour Restaurant in Grand Forks, N.D.

On June 28, 1946, she married Adolph Treichel at Emerado. They farmed near Tolstoy until 1948 when they moved to Bowdle. She worked several years as a cook at the Bowdle School and for a few years as cook at Bowdle Hospital. He died Nov. 5, 1984. The next year she moved to Roscoe and in January 1994 she moved to the Bowdle Nursing Home where she lived the remainder of her life.

She had been an active member of the Evangel United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

She enjoyed flower-gardening and cooking.

Survivors include two sons, Leland (Tracy) Treichel and Merlin (Donna) Treichel, both of Roscoe; one daughter, Marla (Don) Hungerford of Hull, Iowa; two sisters, Olga Lange of Platteville, Wis., and Adeline LaFontaine of Bagley, Minn.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and three sisters.

Casketbearers will be Duke Hungerford of Brookings; Jeremy Treichel of Kodiak, Alaska; Heath Treichel of Madison, Wis.; Steve Olson of Omaha, Neb.; LeRoy LaFontaine of Bagley; and Jim Holweger of Hatton, N.D.

Martin Bitz

Watertown -- Martin Bitz, 43, of Watertown died of cancer Friday, April 6, 2001, at a local hospital.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Family Worship Center Foursquare Church in Watertown. The Rev. Jim Knudsen will officiate.

Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Watertown. Crawford Funeral Chapel of Watertown is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

Martin Bitz was born July 14, 1957, to Henry and Gertrude (Bender) Bitz at Eureka. He attended school in Eureka and graduated in 1976. He attended Lake Area Technical School in Watertown and graduated in 1978 from the automotive mechanics program.

He married Marlene Tulowetzke on Sept. 16, 1978, at Watertown. He worked for Gray Construction and for the last 22 years was employed by Padgett Sales.

He was a member of the Family Worship Center Foursquare Church.

He enjoyed working on cars, especially on transmissions. He also liked stock car racing.

Survivors include his wife of Watertown; one son, Martin Bitz Jr. of Watertown; one daughter, Jennie Bitz of Watertown; his mother of Aberdeen; four brothers, Wilmar Bitz of Ames, Iowa, Elmer Bitz of Aberdeen, Gerold Bitz of Gwinner, N.D., and Albert Bitz of Stratford, Iowa; six sisters, Angie Haak of Sioux Falls, Mary Albertson of Cogswell, N.D., Judy Hoffman of Lexington, N.C., Janet Borchard and Barbara Bitz, both of Aberdeen, and Susie Gehring of Las Vegas.

He was preceded in death by his father and two sisters.

Alvin Knoll

Groton -- The funeral for Alvin Knoll, 85, of Groton will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Groton. The Rev. Richard Collman will officiate.

Burial will be at a later date in the Sunset Memorial Gardens at Aberdeen. Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel of Groton is in charge of arrangements.

A prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the funeral chapel.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel and for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

He died Friday, April 6, 2001, at his residence.

Alvin Knoll was born May 12, 1915, to John and Elsie (Roettle) Knoll in Groton. He attended rural country schools in Day and Brown counties. Following school he worked for various farmers in the area.

He married Mae Johnson on Dec. 2, 1935, in Aberdeen. He worked as a mechanic for the Lenz International Harvester dealership in Conde and farmed in the Conde area. He was the first school bus driver of the Conde Independent School. He later moved to Aberdeen and farmed. He then purchased the family farmstead at Eden where he resided until he retired. He built a home at Mina Lake where he was water superintendent. She died in 1988.

He married Delores Krueger in June 1992 in Groton. They lived there until his death.

He was a member of the Groton United Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge No. 590 in Aberdeen.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, woodworking and spending time at a winter home in Mesa, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife of Groton; one son, Larry (Arleen) Knoll of Peoria, Ariz.; four stepsons, Douglas (Rose) Krueger of Alberta, Minn., and Richard (JoAnn) Krueger, Ronald (Jill) Krueger and Curtis Krueger, all of Groton; one brother, Marvin Knoll of Watertown; two sisters, Madyln Simpson of Prosser, Wash., and Darlene Meyer of Conde; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, one sister, one brother and one stepgrandchild.

Robert Bob' Opp

Sacramento, Calif. -- Robert 'Bob' Opp, 47, of Sacramento died of natural causes Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, in Sacramento.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Eureka. The Rev. Dianne Rood-Kiesz will officiate.

Burial will be in the Eureka City cemetery. Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Paul John Opp was born to Paul and Leila Opp. He was a native of Sacramento and spent many summers with his uncle, John Opp, on a farm at Eureka. He was a master carpenter for 30 years.

He served the Sacramento Regional Chapter of Habitat for Humanity and received the organization's highest award, the 2000 Cornerstone Award.

Survivors include one son, Paul Opp of Sacramento; one daughter, Ann Wilbur of Sacramento; and two sisters, Marilyn Opp Evers of Shingletown, Calif., and Kathleen Opp Shaw of Eureka.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dora Amundson

Gettysburg -- The funeral for Dora Amundson, 99, of Gettysburg and formerly of Faulkton, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Faulkton. The Rev. Lyle Miller will officiate.

Burial will be in the Faulkton cemetery. Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg and Faulkton is in charge of arrangements.

A prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the Oahe Manor in Gettysburg.

She died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at the Oahe Manor.

Dora LuElla Deady was born March 14, 1902, to Thomas and Lula Mae (Funk) Deady in Bryant Township, Faulk County. She attended school there and in Faulkton. She moved with her parents to Faulkton in spring 1920. She clerked at the Farmers Cooperative store.

She married John 'Jack' Amundson on Dec. 25, 1920, in Faulkton. Their first home was in Mitchell until his health failed and they returned to Faulkton in spring 1922. In 1932 she attended the Lawrence Academy of Beauty Culture in Minneapolis and took the S.D. Boards in Pierre. She worked as an operator in Pierre and Faulkton. She worked in the office of price administration during World War II. She served as Faulk County department treasurer from 1947 to 1950. She was the first woman elected to the office of county treasurer in Faulk County, serving from 1950 until 1954. She was elected Faulk County register of deeds in 1955; she resigned before completing the term to go to California with her husband. She was employed there as clerk in the Insurance Department at the Port of Embankment in Wilmington, Calif. He died in December 1986, and she moved to Gettysburg in September 1988 to be near her son. She lived at the Oahe Villa Apartments before entering the Oahe Manor Nursing Home.

She was a member of the United Church of Faulkton, a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 102 and past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 3179 of Faulkton. She also was a member of Autumn Leaves Senior Citizens Center in Faulkton, World War I Auxiliary of Redfield and the Lily Rebekah Lodge in Faulkton.

Survivors include one sister, Jennie Mae Selnes of Sioux Falls; one grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, one brother, one half sister and two half brothers.
