Donald W. Rust

Donald W. Rust, 58, of Brookings, SD died Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Brookings Hospital. Memorial Services have been set for 2:00pm Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, Brookings. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at First United Methodist Church, Brookings. Rude’s Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Donald Wayne Rust was born August 14, 1952 in Brookings, SD the son of Donald L. and Leola (Mohr) Rust.
Don attended Brookings Grade School and graduated from Brookings High School in 1971. He attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion until 1974 when he was stricken with a life long mental illness. His vision of a complete recovery was never realized.
Don enjoyed playing Chess, reading material of every genre with science fiction as a favorite. He was a fan of the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins. He had an intense interest in politics and the struggle for world peace and justice.
He is survived by his mother, Leola Rust of Brookings; a brother, Brad (Eurlyne) of Aberdeen, SD; a step-aunt, Norma Mohr of Yuma, AZ and three cousins.
Don was preceded in death by his father, two uncles, Fred Mohr and Frederick Rust.
Family suggests memorials be directed to East Central Behavioral Health 211 4th Street, Brookings, SD 57006.

Edward James Williamson
Dec. 25 1921 - Jan. 27 2011
Edward J. Williamson, 89, of Brookings died Thursday, January 27, 2011 at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services have been set for 10:30am Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings. Burial and military rites will be at First Lutheran cemetery in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5-8pm, Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
Edward James Williamson was born December 25, 1921 in Owanka, South Dakota, the son of Frank and Anna (Paulsen) Williamson.
Ed attended rural grade school and graduated from Owanka High School in 1940. He attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, graduating in Agriculture in 1947 and received a Master’s Degree in 1952. He served in the European Theatre during World War II as Army Infantry Captain.
Ed married Catherine Bernice Fick of Revere, Minnesota on January 30, 1948 and they were married for sixty years. They resided in Brookings until 1955 with Ed working as a soil scientist for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. In 1955, they accepted a foreign assignment to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, supervising Jordan Valley soils for irrigation suitability. They returned to Brookings in 1957 when he accepted an Extension Service position with the Plant Science Department at SDSU. From 1962 to 1967, they resided in Alexandria, Virginia while Ed worked for the Federal Extension Service in Washington, D.C. He returned to his Plant Science position at SDSU in 1967 and retired in 1979 with Emeritus status from South Dakota State University.
Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, carving, gardening, volunteering for Meals-on-Wheels, helping with Legion Bingo, as well as going to coffee with friends. He was a member and past president of Ascension Lutheran Church and was a charter member and past president of Kiwanis Golden K. He was also a member of the Soil Conservation Society of America, Alpha Zeta, Gamma Sigma Delta, Epsilon Sigma Phi, NARFE, American Legion, VFW, and the Elks.
He is survived by two daughters, Theanne (Dick) Peterson of Brookings, Kristin (Rick) O’Meara of Rochester, MN; one daughter-in-law, Nancye Williamson of Vienna, VA; eight grandchildren, Patrick (Mizuho), Daniel (Anjali), and Joellen Williamson, Michelle (Bryan) McManus and Brooke (Kelly) Baeth, and Ericka, Kristofer, and Joel O’Meara; five great grandchildren, Taiyo and Kyle Williamson, Cate and Jake McManus, and Delaney Baeth; one sister-in-law, Shirlee Eilefson; one brother-in-law, John Fick; and many nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Cathy; his son, Joel Williamson; his sister, Delores Burile; and his parents.
Memorials may be directed to the Edward J. Williamson Scholarship Fund administered by the SDSU Foundation or to Ascension Lutheran Church.
Ed passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011 at the Brookings Hospital at the age of 89.

Marion Elizabeth Thompsen

Marion Elizabeth Thompsen, 93, of Brookings, SD died Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Brookview Manor, Brookings, SD. Funeral Services have been set for 10:00am Saturday, April 17, 2010 at First Lutheran Chruch, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Friday, April 16, 2010 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings.
Marion E. Odegaard was born on March 12, 1917 in Brookings County, South Dakota the daughter of Emil and Mangile (Dole) Odegaard.
Marion received her education in rural school in Sterling Township, Brookings County, SD. She was united in marriage to Delbert Thompsen on December 21, 1940 in Brookings. After their marriage they farmed for many years near White, SD. From 1962 until 1982, Marion was employed at the Brookings Hospital. She was then employed at the Brookings County Court House for 15 years. Delbert died on November 4, 1998 in Brookings.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid in Brookings. She enjoyed fishing and camping and especially enjoyed spending time with her 12 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Marion is survived by four daughters, Janice VanderWal and her husband Larry of Volga, Sharon Harvey and her husband Ron of Pharr, TX, Barbara Klaassen and her husband Gary and Patti Wing and her husband Gary all of Sioux Falls, SD; 12 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; one sister—in—law, Gertrude Odegaard of Mitchell, SD and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and five brothers.

Mary Kathryn Mailey
Jan. 12 1912 - Feb. 05 2009
Mary Kathryn Mailey, 97, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Brookings, died Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Avera Prince of Peace. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 2:00pm Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at Avera Prince of Peace Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior at Avera Prince of Peace Chapel. Burial will be 11:00am Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at St. Thomas More Catholic cemetery, Brookings, SD. Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings is in charge of the arrangements.
Mary Kathryn Maher was born on January 12, 1912 in Brookings, County, South Dakota the daughter of Charles F. and Martha (Dolan) Maher.
Mary received her education in the Brookings Public Schools and was a graduate of the Brookings High School in 1929. She then attended South Dakota State University where she received her Teachers Certificate. After receiving her education she taught school for four years in Brookings County.
Mary was united in marriage to Fred “Fritz” Mailey on June 15, 1937, in Brookings, South Dakota. In 1958, she was employed at Sturdevant Farm Engineering Service as a secretary and bookkeeper and worked there until 1964 when she was employed at S.D.S.U as secretary and bookkeeping in the State 4-H office until her retirement in 1975.
She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters, St. Thomas More Guild, the Brookings Hospital Auxiliary, the South Dakota Art Museum Guild and the Retired Teachers Association.
In 1998 the Mailey’s moved to Avera Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls.
Mary is survived by many nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and six sisters.
In Lieu of flowers the family requests any memorials be sent to Catholic Daughters of America in care of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Brookings, SD.

Mabel M. Lindahl
Dec. 16 1929 - Feb. 04 2009
Funeral services for Mabel M. Lindahl, 79, will be held at 10:30am, Monday, February 9, 2009, at Rudes Funeral Home in Brookings, with visitation from 2pm until 5pm on Sunday at Rudes Funeral Home.
Mabel was born on December 16, 1929, in Correll, Minnesota, the daughter of Peter and Lena (Munson) Larson. She died on Wednesday, February 4, 2009, in Sioux Falls, SD after a brief battle with cancer.
Mabel received her education in the Milbank School and attended Milbank High School. She was united in marriage to Clarence “Kelly” Lindahl on July 6, 1947, in Milbank. After their marriage she was employed at Jack’s Tavern and Sport Shop in Milbank for 13 years. In 1962, they moved to Brookings, SD where she was employed at the Rainbow Café for a short time until working at the Town House Supper Club for 14 years. In 1973, she was employed at 3M Company in Brookings until her retirement in 1993. Kelly died on April 19, 2001.
She was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church and the Ladies Circle. She enjoyed baking and especially spending time with her family and friends.
Mabel is survived by her children Richard and his special friend Shellie of Brookings, Sandra (Ross) Sanders of Bakersfield, CA, Joan (Mark) Nelson, Julie (Brad) Whaley all of Brookings; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and one brother John (Ann) Larson of Fort Collins, CO.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one infant son, five brothers and five sisters.

Florence Mable Meredith

Florence Mable Meredith, 89, of Brookings, SD died Thursday, January 29, 2009 at United Retirement Center. Funeral Services will be 11:00am Monday, February 2, 2009 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be 2:00pm to 4:00pm Sunday, February 1, 2009 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings. Visitation will also be from 9:00am until the time of services, Monday, February 2, 2009 at Rude’s Funeral Home.
Florence Mable Limmer was born October 11, 1919 in Lake County, South Dakota to her parents, Edwin and Martha (Ploetz) Limmer. Florence received her education in the Wentworth Parochial School.
Florence was united in marriage to Hobert Meredith on July 11, 1954 in Wentworth, South Dakota. Florence was employed at the Red Owl Grocery Store for several years in the Meat Department. She also worked at Stub’s Meat Market and Elkton Locker for nine years and for thirteen years at the Marriott Food Service at South Dakota State University until her retirement in 1986. Florence was then employed with Senior Companions for 8 years. Hobert passed away on August 19, 1965.
She was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Aurora and the LWML at First English Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Florence is survived by her daughters, Joyce (Richard) Auch of Aurora, SD and June Tucker of Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters, Hazel Lindholm of Wentworth, SD and Ruth (Ted) Aufdemberge of Dexter, MI; four grandchildren, Shauna, Richard M., Nathanael and Richelle.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Richard W. Plunkett, 74
Richard W. Plunkett, 74, of Evansville, Ind., died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at VNA Charlier Hospice Center in Evansville.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Boone Funeral Home in Evans-ville, with Ste-ven Claspell officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery, with full military rites by the Vanderburgh County Retired Veteran’s Club.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Boone Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to: VNA Charlier Hospice Center, 610 East Walnut St., Evansville, Ind. 47708.
He worked as a machinist at Sterling Brewery for 20 years. He retired from Robur Industries in 1993.
He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, and a life member of VFW Post No. 1114. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He traveled extensively following his retirement.
He enjoyed camping and fishing with his wife and canine buddy, Misty, who was with him all the time.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marvelyn (Jacobson) Plunkett; two daughters, Joann “John” Schrader of Summertown, Tenn., and Susan (Jim) Oelze of Madisonville, Ky.; two sons, Wally (Viola) Plunkett of Elko, Nev., and Randy (Sherri) Plunkett of Evansville; one brother, Donald E. Plunkett of Huron; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Louise Grosz, 85
Louise Grosz, 85, of Tripp died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at the Tripp Good Samaritan Center.
Her funeral will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Delmont with burial following in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston.
Louise Kornder was born June 26, 1919, to Frank and Elizabeth (Mokros) Kornder southwest of Delmont. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Delmont and graduated from Delmont High School.
She married Emil “Pete” Grosz on June 11, 1938, at Tripp. They lived in Delmont and she helped with the bookwork at Grosz Drilling Co. She owned the company from 1982 until her son bought it in 2001.
She was active in card clubs, the Extension club, and the bowling league where she was secretary for many years. She was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church council and served as secretary. She enjoyed reading, needlework, crocheting, crossword puzzles and hummingbirds.
She is survived by two sons, John Grosz of Pierre and Terry (Elizabeth) Grosz of Delmont; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Frances Wenzel; a brother, Gilbert Kornder, a brother-in-law, Arnold Wenzel; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Kornder; and a daughter-in-law, Sandra Grosz.

Velva McHenry, 90
Velva McHenry, 90, of Wessington Springs, died Thursday evening, Oct. 7, 2004, at the Weskota Manor Nursing Home.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Mon-day at the United Methodist Chu-rch, with the Rev. Stan Bockwoldt officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 7:30 p.m. at the Basham Funeral Home in Wessington Springs, and at the church Monday one hour prior to the service.
A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Velva King was born April 30, 1914, to Ernest and Estella (Perkins) King at her parents’ home in rural Jerauld County. She attended school at Gann Valley and graduated from Wessington Springs High School. She then attended Wessington Springs Junior College and taught in country schools in Jerauld County.
She married Marion McHenry in 1944. In the mid-70s she attended college at Spearfish, and taught in rural schools at Rapid City. She retired in 1976 and returned to spend her later years in Wessington Springs. After 18 years living in her apartment at Hillcrest Heights, she entered Weskota Manor where she received excellent care until her death.
She is survived by her four children, Frederick (Evelyn) McHenry of Wessington Springs, Ted McHenry of Sun Valley, Nev., Bernice Mettler of Wessington Springs, and Donald (Connie) McHenry of Faribault, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Evie VonEye, Marla Paulson, Terry McHenry, Janet Pinneo, Larry Mettler, Dennis Mettler, Lori Weber, Michelle Olson, Paul McHenry and Kristen Graves; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Maxine Meeker of Spearfish; and one brother, Willis King of Belle Fourche; 14 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Marion, three brothers, three sisters, and one son-in-law.

Veronica Schoenfelder
Aug. 23 1943 - Jan. 22 2009
Veronica “Jan” (Efta) Schoenfelder, 65, was born on August 23, 1943, in Wagner, SD, the daughter of James Vincent and Lillian Marie (Wagner) Efta. She died at her residence in Brookings on Thursday, January 22, 2009.
Jan was the youngest of 15 children. She received her education in Wagner, SD and was a graduate of Wagner High School. She pursued an Elementary Education degree at Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, SD. She was united in marriage to Fran Schoenfelder on August 23, 1962, in Wagner, SD. Jan was co-owner of Jes’ Crafts & Gifts in Plankinton, SD. In 1984, Jan and her family moved to Brookings, SD, where she assisted with ECMD Adult Education and instructed Glass Etching classes.
Jan was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Brookings. She loved to travel with her family and was a talented interior decorator, crafter and landscaper. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband Fran of Brookings, SD; her children Jon Schoenfelder of Brookings, Twyla (Mark) Walter of Ridgefield, CT, Tonya Schoenfelder of Sioux Falls, SD, Jay Schoenfelder of Brookings; her grandchildren Peter, Christian, Kayleen, Abbey Walter; brothers and sisters Kaye Metteer of Yankton, SD, Tony (Lona) Efta of Wagner, Leonard (Ramona) Efta of Kenai, AK, Joan (Norman) Woods of Wagner, Louise (Ron) Mika of Nikiski, AK, Joyce (Jerome) Sanders of Maple Valley, WA.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters Mary Austrevich, Theresa Efta, Rose Swigart, and five brothers Val, John, Joe, Tom and Francis Efta, and her father and mother in law Pete and Lumena Schoenfelder.
Interment: 3:00 pm, Tuesday, Emsley cemetery, Ethan, SD
