Bernice K. Oltmann, age 91, of Madison, SD, died Sunday, January 4, 2004, at Beverly Healthcare, Madison.
Bernice Katherine Bergerson was born December 13, 1912, at LeMars, Iowa, to William and Louise (Reelfs) Bergerson. She moved to South Dakota as a child and attended school at Orland, SD. She married Arthur Oltmann on April 12, 1939, at Madison. They farmed near Franklin, SD and she moved to Madison in 1976 when her husband died. She moved into Beverly Healthcare in 1997. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Madison.
preceded in death BY: her parents, her husband, one son Paul, four sisters and five brothers.
SURVIVORS: one daughter, Nancy (Bernie) Reifers of Madison; two grandchildren, Mark (Lisa) Mathieu and Sally Kranz, two great grandchildren; and two sisters, Ellen Jones and Regina Guffy both of Chico, CA.

Iona P. Bjorklund
(October 2, 1927 - February 19, 2004)
Iona P. Bjorklund was born October 2, 1927, at Orland, SD, to Gustav and Minnie (Tidemann) Bjorklund. She attended school at Orland and the S.D. School for the Blind at Gary, SD. She lived with her parents on the farm and moved into Madison in 1973 where she lived with her brother Kenneth. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Orland and active in St. Peter Women of the ELCA.
preceded in death BY: her parents; two brothers, Dennis Bjorklund and Kenneth Bjorklund; and two sisters, May Harms and Rose Rehfeldt.
SURVIVORS: include several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn M. Eller
(July 12, 1915 - March 3, 2004)
Evelyn Maxine Kuchenbecker was born July 12, 1915, at Madison, SD, to Emil and Elizabeth (Beesley) Kuchenbecker. She graduated from Madison High School. She worked as a waitress at Jack’s Bar and then worked as a clerk at the Cork-n-Bottle for 45 years. She retired in 1999. She was a life member of the Izaak Walton League and a member of the United Methodist Church, Madison.
preceded in death BY: her parents; one brother, Leonard Kuchenbecker; two sisters, Luella Shephard and Viola Knox; one nephew, Kevin Knox; and a special friend, Bill Waters.
SURVIVORS: three nieces, Dawn (Chesley) Foster of Madison, Judy (Joe) Linn of Casper, WY, and Nora (Darrel) Lee of Yankton and one sister-in-law, Ruby Kuchenbecker of Yankton.

Judy DeKnikker
(April 2, 1920 - March 22, 2004)
Lorraine “Judy” Foster was born April 2, 1920, at White, SD, to Harry and Hattie (Johnson) Foster. She attended school at Brookings and married Allen Pitcock on August 10, 1939 at Brookings. She married Dick DeKnikker in November of 1948 at Omaha, NE. She worked at the Kellogg’s Company in Omaha until moving to Madison in 1982. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Abundant Life Church.

SURVIVORS: include two sons, Clifford (Kathie) DeKnikker of Tucson, AZ and David (Mary Ann) Exe of Minneapolis, MN; one daughter, Sharon (Maynard) Oines of Madison; four grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; three brothers, Virgil Foster of Prosser, WA, Bob Foster of Tacoma, WA and Harry Foster of Denver, CO; and four sisters, Norma Matison of Tacoma, WA, Virginia Wolfard of Occidental, CA, Marge Larrew of St. Joseph, MO, and Dorothy Johnson of Clovis, CA.

Neva E. (Way) Gist
(April 26, 1899 - May 6, 2008)
Neva (Way) Gist, age 109, of Madison, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at Golden Living Center, Madison.
Neva E. Trullinger was born April 26, 1899, at Maryville, MO, to James and Sarah Jane (Shell) Trullinger. She was raised in rural Missouri and married Russell Way on December 31, 1919 at Murdo, SD. She taught school in Nebraska and South Dakota. They moved to Madison in 1945 and they lived in Sioux Falls for a few years. She was employed for many years at the Ben Franklin Store in Madison and her husband died in 1959. Neva married Ernest Gist in 1971 at Madison. She retired in 1972 and he died in 1976. She was a member of United Methodist Church, Joy Circle and World War I Auxilliary. She enjoyed playing the piano and was accompanist for many soloists in Lake Preston, Hetland and Arlington. She even played on her 109th birthday in April. Neva was the oldest resident of South Dakota.

SURVIVORS: three daughters, Mary Jane Todd of Madison, Joyce Redmond of Huachuca City, AZ and Kathleen Binder of Montgomery, IL; one stepson, Jack (Sylvia) Gist of Lamberton, MN; one step son-in-law, John Hamilton of Iowa; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Mabel Hassebroek, 97
Mabel Hassebroek, 97, DeSmet, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in De Smet.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Spirit Lake Church, rural De Smet, with the Rev. Tom Pickles officiating. Burial will follow at the Spirit Lake cemetery.
There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Sunday at Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet.
There will be no visitation prior to the prayer service.
Mabel Eikamp was born Feb. 18,1907, to Alderk and Mary (Huffman) Eikamp at Forreston, Ill. She moved with her family at the age of 5 to South Dakota, where they settled on a farm five miles southeast of Bancroft, known today as Wayside Farms. She attended country school, Bancroft High School and then De Smet High School, where she graduated in 1925. She then attended summer school at Northern Formal in Aberdeen. She returned to the Bancroft area and taught country school at Halverson School and Dirksen School.
She married Fred Hassebroek Dec. 23, 1927. They lived on a farm five miles northwest of Spirit Lake Church. They left the farm during the “Dirty Thirties” and took a job spray painting sets of farm buildings for Northwest Mutual Insurance Company. Her husband built his own camper, which was the first RV known of at the time. The couple lived in this as they traveled to their painting jobs. They spent the winter months in south Texas during this time. In 1942 they moved to Huron and then settled at Wayside Farm in 1947, so their son Glen could attend school.
She is survived by one brother, Monte Eikamp of Huron; three sisters-in-law, Gertrude Hassebroek of Mesa, Ariz., Eleanor Hassebroek of Burlington, Wash., and Fannie Tisdel, Clayton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother Alan; her husband Fred; her son Glen; and a daughter-in-law Carol.

Onalee “Ona” Moorman, 79
Onalee “Ona” Moorman, 79, of Wessington Springs, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at the Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center in Wessington Springs.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Free Methodist Church in Wess-ington Springs.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Funeral arrangements were announced by the Basham Funeral Home of Wessington Springs.
Onalee Houska was born on June 1, 1925, on a farm near Ola, to Lee and Eunice (LaVoy) Houska. She attended school in Kimball and Pukwana, graduating from Pukwana High School in 1943. She worked at Northwest Security National Bank in Chamberlain and the telephone office in Pukwana directly after graduating. She went on to attend Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls and worked at Fantles tearoom as a busboy and at Northwest Security National Bank as a messenger. After graduation from Nettleton College she was employed as a secretary at various businesses in Sioux Falls.
She married Ryland Moorman at Pukwana on Sept. 8, 1948, and moved to Brookings so he could finish college. They moved to the ranch in Burr Oak Township in Beadle County in 1950, where they ranched until 1973. They then moved into Wessington Springs.
She worked as a licensed abstractor for 20 years and eventually bought the abstract company and managed it until it was sold in 1991. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Circle 1 of the United Church of Christ, South Dakota Land Title Association, Wessington Springs Golf Club, and the Central Dakota Marine Corps Auxiliary.
Her hobbies included reading, gardening, sewing, painting, golfing and family pets. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren, including Jacob and Jerritt Kelsey. She especially enjoyed a hot game of cards with her beloved nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Michael (Kathy) of Lincoln, Neb.; two daughters, Marcia Moorman of Aberdeen, and Susan Jost of Wessington Springs; her special friend, Joel Kelsey of Wessington; five grandchildren, Matt, Brett and Kate Moorman, and Bethany and Bonnie Jost; one sister, Marsha Armfield of Aberdeen; one brother, Charles Houska of Oacoma; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Robert and Thomas; one sister, Phyllis McCarthy; one brother-in-law, Frank McCarthy; a sister-in-law, MaryAnn Houska; and a son-in-law, David Jost.
Pallbearers will be Reed Woodruff, Roger Thompson, Wayne Grohs, Jerry VanDenOever, David Bender and Jack Dwyer.

Helen I. Huddleston, 87
Helen I. Huddleston, age 87, of Corsica and formerly of Wessington, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at the Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center at Corsica. Her burial service of her cremated remains will be at 11:00 Wednesday at the Wessington cemetery at Wessington with the Rev. Allen Sager officiating. There will be no visitation. Arr-angements are under the direction of Welter Funeral Home.
Helen I. Huddleston was born Helen I. Langbehn on November 7, 1916, to Arthur and Anna (Dammon) Langbehn in Carroll County, IA. When she was a young girl she moved with her family to South Dakota and attended school at Wolsey.
In 1935, Helen married Willis L. Stuart. They made their home in Huron where Helen drove taxi and worked at local businesses. To this union two children were born, Willis, Jr. ‘Butch’, and Myra. On September 11, 1948, Helen married Gerald ‘Hud’ Huddleston at Mitchell. They moved to Wessington where she worked at the Golden Rule Grocery and Department Store. Later, they moved to a farm and then back into Wessington. They purchased the Mobil service station, which later was known as OK Service. Helen drove a school bus for several years and also helped operate the service station with Hud. They owned the station until Hud’s death on July 18, 1998.
Helen later moved into assisted living in Stickney and in January of 2003, to the Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in Corsica. She was a member of various community clubs over the years.
She is survived by one daughter, Myra Stuart (Ken ‘Pickle’) Huizenga of Golden Valley, AZ; seven grandchildren, Eugene, Dominic, and Teresa Huizenga; Richard, Vickie, Glen, and Steven Stuart and their families; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Menning of Wolsey; and Marjorie Garner of Roscoe; several nieces and nephews; and her very special friends, Duane, Peggy, Joseph, Bridget, Amanda, Tom and Carol Casavan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald ‘Hud’; one son, Willis, Jr. “Butch”; two brothers, LaRay Langbehn, and Ralph Langbehn; three sisters, Mildred Bolte, Alice Lyman, and Edna Mae Williams.

Florence Dave, 93
Florence Dave, 93, of 50 Seventh St. S.E., and formerly of 457 Third St. S.W., died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.
Her funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Cathal Gallagher officiating. Burial will be at St. Martin cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening at Welter Funeral Home or prior to the Mass at the church Monday morning.
There will be a rosary service at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Francis Dave, Ignazio “Chuck” Dave, Vincent Dave, Jim Sheridan and Dave Sheridan.

Corinne B. Sanford, 92
Corinne B. Sanford, 92, of Orangevale, Calif., died Sept. 23, 2004, in Citrus Heights, Calif.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
Corinne Best was born Jan. 23,1912, to Harvey M. and Harriet Esther Best in De Smet.
She graduated from Bancroft High School and Huron College. She did post-graduate work at the Gregg College in Chicago and the University of California in Berkley. She was an instructor and principal at the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport, Iowa.
She married W. Morgan Sanford in Roswell, N.M., on Dec. 24, 1943. After moving to Huron she taught business classes at the Northwest College of Commerce. She worked with her husband in the Best and Sanford and the Sanford and Rogers real estate and insurance businesses.
After retirement they moved to Mesa, Ariz., living there until 1999 when they moved to Orangevale.
She is survived by one son, William (Sharon) Sanford of Orangevale; one daughter, Jill (Ken) Collin of Freeport, Ill.; four grandchildren, Tamara (Aaron) Newton of Fair Oaks, Calif., Julie (Kyle) Rested of Hayward, Calif., Alicia (Ian) Duell of Jakarta, Indonesia, and Ross Collin of Madison, Wis.; and one great-grandson, Zachary Newton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Bonnie; and her husband.

Bernard W. Wernsmann, 75
Bernard W. Wernsmann, 75, of Redfield, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004 at his residence.
Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Liborius Catholic Church in Polo, with the Rev. William Osborn officiating. Burial will be in St. Liborius cemetery in Polo.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Wernsmann, Mike Schlechter, Rob Schlechter, Ed Anglin, Larry Anglin, Luke Wernsmann, Dean Schlechter and Tony Wernsmann.
Visitation will be Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield, with a rosary at 6 p.m. at the church.
Bernard W. Wernsmann was born March 8, 1929, at Headlee Ranch near Interior, to Phil and Mary (Maloney) Wernsmann. He graduated from Polo High School and farmed for a short time before joining the Army. After his discharge, he moved to Minneapolis, and worked as a machinist at Graco for 35 years before retiring to Redfield. He enjoyed fishing, electronics and television repair.
He is survived by two stepdaughters, Stephanie (Donald) Rowell of Anoka, Minn., and Debra (Michael) Kiedrowski of Andover, Minn.; one stepson Ken (Jennifer) Davis of Ingelside, Texas; eight stepgrandchildren; five sisters, Marie Mattson of Seattle, Wash., Lucille (Alvin) Anglin and Kathryn (Maurice) Schlechter, both of Polo, Betty Schlechter of Miller, and Dorothy (Edmund) Zens of Redfield; and one brother Phil (Sally) Wernsmann of Kimball.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.
