Sylvia Ann Dvorak
Born August 29, 1918
Resided Scotland, South Dakota
Died November 5, 2010
Age 92

Sylvia Ann Dvorak was born Thursday, August 29, 1918 to Mathias “Mike” and Carrie (Trantina) Kokesh on the family farm southeast of Scotland. Sylvia attended Klinkner Country School near the family farm. Her mother Carrie died in 1934, leaving Sylvia to help her father care for the remaining seven children on the family farm. The hardships of the Great Depression and the difficulties of the weather during the “Dirty Thirties” made life on the family farm almost impossible. To help provide for her brothers and sisters, Sylvia left the farm to work as a caretaker for Dr. and Mrs. Traynor in Omaha, Nebraska for several years.

Sylvia was united in marriage to Edmund Dvorak on April 12, 1937 in Lesterville. They raised four children. They farmed together north of Scotland along with Edmund’s brother, Frank, for 36 years. Sylvia and Edmund retired from farming in 1973 and moved to Scotland. Sylvia loved gardening, quilting and life. She also valued her many friends.

Sylvia was a member of St. George Catholic Church in Scotland and was very active in the Altar Society and also served as President for many years. She played integral leadership roles in numerous church functions and operations. As a volunteer, she delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. Sylvia passed away on Friday, November 5, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland, having attained the age of 92 years, 2 months, and 7 days.

She is survived by a son, James and wife Celestine of Scotland; a daughter, Karen Dvoark and fiancé Lynn Ziegler and family of Sioux Falls; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Dvorak of Parkston; six grandchildren: Michael and Vicki Dvorak and family of Scotland, Charlene and Vince Connelly and family of Sioux Falls, David Dvorak of Scotland, Stacey and Frank Massey and family of Olivet, Robert Dvorak and family of Parkston, and Sharon and Roger Crotten, St. Mountain, Minnesota; and seven great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by six sisters-in-law: Florence and Agnes Kokesh of Wagner, Delphie Kokesh of Scotland, Delores Kokesh of Delmont, Helen Kokesh of Yankton, and Norma Kokesh of Brookings.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband in 1987, two sons: Donald in 1968 and Edward in 1979; a granddaughter, her parents, seven brothers: Donald, Joe, Clayton, Raymond, Ernie, Mike, Edward, and three sisters: Elsie Cap, Gracie Hacecky and Frances Thunker.

Lawrence Frank Conrad was born to Charles and Clara Conrad on April 16, 1915 on a farm northwest of Scotland, South Dakota. He passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland at the age of 95 years. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kaylor, and was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Scotland. On May 23, 1937 Lawrence was united in marriage to Alma Gall at Congregational Faith Church in Lesterville. Together they made their home on a farm north of Scotland where they raised their four children. In the fall of 1944, Lawrence's faith in the Lord was strengthened after a farming accident caused the loss of his leg and nearly claimed his life. Lawrence and Alma retired from farming in the fall of 1979 and moved to Scotland. Throughout his life Lawrence was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and he was an evangelist of his faith always telling others of the wonderful things the Lord had done for him. Lawrence found great joy in being with his family, farming, fishing with his grandchildren, reading and telling Bible stories, playing cards with family and friends, and doing puzzles. Recently, Lawrence had been a resident at the Scotland Good Samaritan Center where he took great joy in sharing how blessed he was for all the family and friends he had.

Alice Margaret Mensch
Born February 1, 1917
Resided Scotland, South Dakota
Died November 22, 2010
Age 93

Alice Margaret Mensch was born near Freeman, South Dakota on Friday, February 9, 1917. She was the youngest of eleven children born to her immigrant parents, Philip, Sr., and Emilie (Kramer) Mensch. Her mother died when Alice was ten years old. She graduated from Freeman High School in 1935, and then spent the following two years taking care of her father. After attending Brookings State College for a short time, she found nursing to be the career she wanted to pursue. She then enrolled in Sacred Heart Nursing School in Yankton. For the next 40 years, she enjoyed the hard work of nursing. She was a compassionate nurse, serving as a floor nurse and as a private nurse. To this small Midwest town girl, New York and the big eastern cities were particularly interesting. She liked the people she cared for, with the Jewish patients taking a special liking to her. As she got older, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri to work and live with her sister, Ruth. She retired to Yucaipa, California in 1980 and lived with her sisters, Minnie and Martha. After they passed away, she returned to South Dakota in 2000. In 2002, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland. In these last days, her faith in and love for her Lord Jesus was renewed as she enjoyed daily devotions and singing many hymns by heart. Card games with friends kept her mind alert. In November, 2010, her health began to fail and she passed away on Monday, November 22, 2010 at the age of 93 years, 9 months and 13 days.

Alice’s family is grateful for her life. Her niece, Harriet Schaeffer of Scotland, and other extended family members will miss the time they spent with her.

In addition to her parents, Philip, Sr., and Emilie Mensch, Alice is preceded in death by three brothers: Henry, Philip, Jr., and Herman, and seven sisters: Amelia, Katherine, Dora, Minnie, Henrietta, Martha, and Ruth.

Blessed are they that die in the Lord, for Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the Life!"
