George C. Hutchings

RAPID CITY — George C. Hutchings, 77, of Rapid City, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at Fairmont Grand Manor Assisted Living Facility.

George was born February 5,1925, in Rapid City, to Custer and Lucille (Beyers) Hutchings.

He grew up and attended country schools in Nebraska and South Dakota.

George served in the U. S. Marine Corps from August of 1943 until March of 1946, attaining the rank of sergeant.

He fought in the Central Pacific during World War II.

After returning from his service to the country, George was united in marriage to Mary Bevelhymer in Ponca, Neb.

George was involved in sales for most of his career, including insurance sales for Prudential.

He also owned his own motel cleaning supply company.

George was active for many years as a Troop Leader in the Boy Scouts, and was a member of Rushmore VFW Post 1273.

George was a helpful person and a good neighbor.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Hutchings of Rapid City, and his son, Evan L. Hutchings and his wife, Paulette of Black Hawk.

George was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Kathryn.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiating.

Military honors will be provided by

Rushmore VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City.

Family and friends may gather at 9:15 a.m. at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home to proceed to the cemetery.

Doyle D. Ream

RAPID CITY — Doyle D. Ream, 80, Rapid City, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at a Rapid City nursing home.

He was born Dec. 4, 1921, in Berkmere, S.D., to Ernest and Madge (Freeman) Ream, the fourth child and only son among five children.

A graduate of Hot Springs High School, Doyle served in World War II with the 65th Division Field Artillery Unit.

He was discharged as a Captain and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service as Commander of the 868th Field Artillery Battalion.

He was employed with Northwest Bank and his 44-year career with the bank was spent throughout the Black Hills region. He retired in 1984.

Doyle was married to Dorothy Richer on Dec. 17, 1983, at Sheridan, Wyo.

Doyle shared his varied interests with family and friends.

A master woodworker, fly and lure maker and a good fisherman, he created and shared pieces with others. He was a dedicated trap shooter and member of the Rapid City Trap Club.

His many friendships with other shooters were his prizes.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Ream, Rapid City; a daughter, Colleen Rocker, Evergreen, Colo.; two stepsons, J. T. Richer, Sheridan, Wyo., and Jim Bartholomew, Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Vola Tietge, Carlsbad, Calif., and Velma Raddatz, Sidney, Neb.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, May 6, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Private family committal services will be at the Black Hills National cemetery.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, with Sr. Susan Pohl, OSB officiating.

A memorial has been established.

James F. Weekes

SPEARFISH — James F. Weekes, 84, of Spearfish and formerly of Aladdin, Wyo., and Belle Fourche, passed away Thursday evening, May 2, 2002, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Visitation will be Monday, May 6, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and one hour prior to the service at the church. A Christian Wake Service will be at 7 p.m. Monday evening, at St Paul's Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, at the church, with Fr. Arnold Kari as celebrant.

Interment will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with military rites provided by the Belle Fourche Veterans honor guard.

James was born August 4, 1917, at Riverside Ranch near Almont, N.D., to James F. and Dora (Colburn) Weekes Sr. He grew up on the family ranch.

In 1931 he moved with his family to the HT Ranch near Amidon, N.D., where he and his father started staging rodeos.

Jim served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1943.

Most of that time was on Kodiak Island where he was in charge of the pack string.

In 1944 he and his father purchased a ranch north of McIntosh, S.D. James was united in marriage to Janet Ferguson Oct. 1 1945, at McIntosh.

They made their home on the ranch, and also started working as rodeo stock contractors, and Jim worked many years as a PRCA pickup man.

In 1971 they purchased a ranch near Belle Fourche where they raised cattle and Quarterhorses.

They retired to Aladdin, Wyo., in 1991, moving to Spearfish in the fall of 2001.

Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife Janet Weekes of Spearfish; daughter Nola and Malcom Price of Wasta, S.D.; two sisters, Mavis Allan and Arlene Landgrebe, both of Dickinson, N.D.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, son Jack in 1969 and one grandchild.

Carl Rose

WINNER - Carl Rose, 58, Winner, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.

Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Martensen, Winner; one sister, Sandra Pierce, Galveston, Texas; two brothers, Jim Rose, Wahoo, Neb., and Jack Rose, Winner; and his special friend, Kim Christiansen, Winner.

He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1965 to 1967.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Mason Funeral Home in Winner.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at United Methodist Church in Winner.

Burial will be at Winner cemetery.

John F. May

RAPID CITY - John F. May, 83, Rapid City, died at his home Sunday, May 5, 2002, with his family by his side.

John was born September 19, 1918, to Paul and Sadie (Wolf) May at Ismay, Montana.

Finishing his early education in Ismay, John was a successful rancher in eastern Montana until World War II.

He served three years in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.

After the war, John returned to the Black Hills area in 1946, where he met and married Lucille Demos Dahl, his spouse and partner in life.

Following his marriage, John left the ranch and moved to Rapid City, where as an electrician he helped construct many of the local buildings.

In 1999 he was recognized for 50 years of active participation in the IBEW Local Union 1250.

A Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, John was a devoted husband and father who loved to hunt and fish with his family.

In retirement, golf and woodworking joined his leisure activities.

In addition to his wife Lucille, John is survived by a sister, Betty Montforton, Bozeman, and three sons, Darrel Dahl and his wife Diane, Rapid City, John May and his wife Marie, Milwaukee, Wis., and Bill May and his wife Paula of Hanford, Calif.

His extended family includes nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, with Rev. Brian Lane officiating.

Inurnment, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273, will be at the Black Hills National cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Hospice of the Hills.

Thelma J. Richardson-Anthony

PINE RIDGE - Thelma J. Richardson-Anthony, 67, Pine Ridge, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, in Rapid City.

Survivors include three sons, Louis Anthony, Edgemont, Fred Anthony, St. Paul, Minn., and Lyle Anthony, Olympia, Wash.; five daughters, Tammy Fogg and Julie Morefield, both of Ellensburg, Wash., Clarissa Goure and Georgine Anthony, both of Edgemont, and Angel Cope, Oelrichs; one brother, Donroy Richardson, St. Paul, Minn.; four sisters, Caroline Eli, Milaca, Minn., Louise Scheine, Minneapolis, Donna Richardson, Wichita, Kan., and Jaqueline Ledo, St. Paul; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A two-night wake will begin today at Wakpamni CAP Office in Pine Ridge.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 9, at Holy Rosary Mission in Pine Ridge, with Catholic clergy officiating.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at Holy Rosary Mission cemetery in Pine Ridge.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Anthony J. Nalley

PIEDMONT - Anthony J. Nalley, 21, of Piedmont, graduated to his heavenly home on Thursday, May 2, 2002, at the St. Paul's Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.

Anthony was born September 29, 1980, in Spartanburg, S.C., to George W. and Melinda (Will) Nalley. He grew up in western South Dakota and was home-schooled for several years. He also attended Calvary Christian and Rapid City Christian schools. Anthony graduated in 1998 from Rapid City Christian High School, and he also graduated from LeTourneau University in Dallas, Texas, with a degree in computer science.

He loved to work on his computer and be with his friends. His family and friends will miss his dry wit.

Anthony is survived by his parents, George W. and Melinda Nalley, his sister, Bethany Nalley, and his brother, Wesley Nalley, all of Piedmont; his maternal grandparents, Martin and Bill Will of Clyde, Ohio; his paternal grandparents, George and Christine Nalley of Marion, Ind.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

An all-night wake will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Mother Butler Center in Rapid City. The funeral service will be at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, at the Mother Butler Center, with Ron Foote and Adrian Jacobs officiating. Interment will follow at Piedmont cemetery in Piedmont.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Alexander F. Bad Bear Sr.

WOUNDED KNEE - Alexander F. Bad Bear Sr., 60, Wounded Knee, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, in Pine Ridge.

Survivors include four daughters, Betty Bad Bear, Carol Bad Bear and Sharon Goings, all of Pine Ridge, and Martha Bad Bear, Rapid City; four sons, Alex Bad Bear Jr., Winston Bad Bear and Edsel Bad Bear, all of Pine Ridge, and Irving Bad Bear, Wounded Knee; eight sisters, Eva Black Bear, Cathy Black Bear, Peggy Black Bear, Raydine Black Bear, Nellie Black Bear, Maxine Ghost, Gloria Ghost and Barbara Bad Bear, all of Pine Ridge; five brothers, Robert Ghost and Randell Ghost, both of Pine Ridge, Burgess Ghost, Hot Springs, Artie Black Bear, Black Hawk, and Leroy Ghost, Rapid City; 24 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A two-night wake will begin at 4 p.m. today at Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge.

The second night will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Messiah Episcopal Church in Wounded Knee.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the church, with the Rev. Cordelia Red Owl and the Rev. Darrell New officiating.

Burial will be at Messiah Episcopal cemetery in Wounded Knee.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Marie A. Heier

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Marie A. Heier, 88, Albuquerque and formerly of Hettinger, N.D., and Prairie City, S.D., died Sunday, May 5, 2002, in Albuquerque.

Arrangements are pending with Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home of Hettinger.
