Standly L. Oedekoven

December 1, 1926 - August 7, 2008

Service was held:

Monday, August 11, 2008, at 1:30 p.m.

Standly L. Oedekoven, 81, Sturgis, died Thursday, August 7, 2008, at the VA Medical Center.
Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 11, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.
Standly was born December 1, 1926, in Sturgis, SD, to Albert and Ella (Linstrom) Oedekoven. He attended school through the Eighth grade at the Nine Mile School. He was drafted on May 24, 1945, and served until his honorable discharge on October 28, 1946. Standly returned to the family farm near Vale where he worked with his dad before taking over the operation.
Standly married Carolyn Smith in Newell, SD, on October 3, 1948. He farmed and ranched until 1982 at which time Standly and Carolyn moved to Sturgis. He still enjoyed going to the ranch and helping.
Standly was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He was a leader of the Nine Mile Guys and Dolls 4-H Club for 17 years. He was a past member of the Vale Lutheran Church and past president of the church council. Standly was also a past director and president of the Meade County Fair Association. He was past president and secretary of the Bear Butte Farm Bureau. Standly and Carolyn enjoyed square dancing together for 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Oedekoven, Sturgis; two sons, Ricky (Carla) Oedekoven, and Darrell (Penny) Oedekoven, all of Vale; one daughter, Carol (Kelvin) Grey, St. Lawrence, SD; grandchildren, Lea Ann, Clint, Nicky, Wes, Misty, Kelli, Kristina, and Kathy; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Williamson, Sturgis, and Rose (Kenneth) Jordan, Milaca, MN; one brother, Allen (Hannah) Oedekoven, Sturgis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Arthur, Myron, and Vernon; and one sister, Lena Adams.
Memorials have been established to Grace Lutheran Church and to the Vale Lutheran Church.

Betty Ann Dubry

April 30, 1922 - August 6, 2008

Service was held:

Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at 10:00 a.m.

Betty Dubry, 86, Sturgis, died Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at the Sturgis Regional Health Care Center.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Betty was born April 30, 1922, at Wasta, SD, to Lee C. and Mayme (Miner) Huddleston. She attended grade school in Elm Springs, SD, through the eighth grade and her freshman year in Wasta. She was a sophomore in Rapid City and graduated from the Piedmont High School in 1939.
Betty married Alvin "Bud" Hix at Sturgis. She worked in a local café before moving to Rapid City where she worked in the B&B Café. The couple adopted two children, Jim and Carolyn.
Betty married Elmer Lawrence "Buck" Dubry in Wyoming on August 24, 1956. They lived in Rapid City for two years. They moved to Sturgis in 1958 where Betty operated the Frontier Service Station while Buck worked construction. They moved to Tilford upon retiring. After Buck's death in 1990, Betty moved back to Sturgis and lived at Heritage Acres.
Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn (Rich) Cleveland, Sturgis; one son, Jim (Joleen) Dubry, Charlotte Hall, Maryland; two sisters, Lois Skvicalo, Lead, and Leona Casteel, Vale; two brothers, Bill Huddleston, Buffalo, WY, and Red Huddleston, Sturgis; four grandchildren, Tammy (Tim) Hall, Troy Gossard, Jason (Jamie) McNenny, and Christopher Dubry; five great-grandchildren, Julia, Mason, and Lucas Hall, Devon Beamon, and Cade McNenny; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Bud, and one sister, Myrtle.
A memorial has been established to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

Howard Kirk Wilson

March 1, 1914 - July 30, 2008

Monday, August 4, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

Howard Kirk Wilson, age 94, Newell, passed away peacefully in his sleep in his own home July 30, 2008.
Howard was born March 1, 1914, north of Vale on the homestead of his parents, Henry J. and Alice (Kirk) Wilson. He received his education at Vale and graduated from high school in 1933. He farmed with his father until 1939, when he went to Los Angeles, CA, and attended the California Aircraft School. After graduation, he went to work for the Douglas Aircraft Company in Santa Monica, CA, where he became a Leadman in the spot welding department.
He met his lifelong sweetheart, Constance, at the Hollywood Paladium at the corner of Sunset and Vine in the heart of the film capital. On July 4, 1942, Howard married Constance Irene Weaver in Lynwood, CA. They lived in West Los Angeles for a time. The farm called his heart home and they returned to South Dakota and the Wilson farm. For the next fifteen years, Howard worked with his father and also for the Belle Fourche Irrigation Project and the Dutton Lumber CO.
In 1958, he built a new home in Newell and took the position of Head Custodian of the Newell School District for the next thirty years, retiring in 1988. Howard was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church and served on the Church Council. He was also a member of the Knight’s of Columbus and Lion’s Club. He took care of the Wilson Cemetery and planted trees around the area. He loved to travel and took several trips to Europe, visiting the area in Norway and Sweden that his Grandparents had migrated from besides traveling extensively in the United States. Constance passed away in 2003. Although it broke his heart, he never lost his zest for life. His best friend, Leo, took him to all the Newell High School basketball games. The girls’ basketball team held a special place in his heart and he often remarked that is what kept him going. Everyone that knew him will miss him.
He is survived by his seven children, Kirk (Joyce) Wilson, Martin, SD; Kathleen (Bob) Nikodym, Littleton, CO; Mary Wilson, Sugar Grove, IL; Corinne (Syd) Iwan, Midland, SD, Timothy (Pam) Wilson, Salina, KS; Briana (Ron) Funk, Newell, SD; and Thomas (Kathryn) Wilson, Houston. TX. Brother, Ray Kenneth Wilson, Independence, MO; and sister, Eleanor Walton, Phoenix, AZ. 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren also survive him.
His spouse, Constance, Granddaughter, Jennifer Wilson, and Grandson, Jeremiah Wilson, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newell with a wake and Rosary service beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4, 2008, at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newell with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial follows at the Wilson Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the Newell Girl's Basketball Scholarship and St. Mary's Church.

Sarah Marie Austin

October 11, 1984 - July 29, 2008

Service was held:

Saturday, August 2, 2008, at 10:00 a.m.

Sarah Marie Austin, 23, Union Center, SD, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, as the result of an automobile accident.
Visitation will be Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 2, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the Central Meade County Community Center in Union Center with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at the Red Owl Cemetery.
Sarah was born October 11, 1984, in Deadwood, SD, to Bryan and Laurie (Eilert) Austin. She grew up at Enning. She moved to Sturgis where she graduated from Sturgis Brown High School. While in high school, Sarah was a cheerleader and was also a member of the ROTC Color Guard. She was crowned Miss Junior South Dakota and was third runner-up in the Miss Junior America pageant. Sarah has been living at Union Center for the last four years loving and raising her family, her fiance', Kasey, and their three daughters. Sarah attended Black Hills State University and was currently taking online classes at Vermillion Nursing School Program. She had made the dean's list. Sarah was currently employed at Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center as a CRA.
Survivors include her mother, Laurie Austin, Rapid City; her father and stepmother, Bryan and Tyra Austin, Enning; her fiance', Kasey Spring, Union Center, and his parents, Glen and Robbin Spring, Union Center; three daughters, Mariah Spring, Shaniah Spring, and Alanah Spring, Union Center; six brothers, Derek Austin, Aaron Austin, Zach Austin, Zane Austin, Chance Whidby, and Shane Whidby, all of Sturgis; brother and sister-in-laws to be, Kelly, Kayla, and Kerry Spring, all of Union Center; her maternal grandmother, Clara Eilert, Sturgis; her paternal grandparents, Jerry and Patty Austin, White Owl; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A memorial has been established to benefit her three children.

Ricky Lynn Niederwerder

December 4, 1960 - October 27, 2008

Service was held:

Saturday, November 1, 2008, at 1:00 p.m.

Ricky Lynn Niederwerder, 47, Garland, TX, died of a brain tumor on Monday, October 27, 2008, at Rapid City Hospice House.
Visitation will be Thursday from noon until 8:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Visitation resumes on Friday at 8 a.m. with a family prayer service on Friday Oct. 31st at 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at the First Assembly of God Church in Rapid City on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at 1:00 p.m., with Pastors Harold Delbridge, Tim Stuen, and David Hilton officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Cemetery.
Ricky was born December 4, 1960, in Sturgis to Ernest and Nona (Harris) Niederwerder. He grew up at Hereford, SD, and graduated from Sturgis High School in 1979. He attended Western Dakota Vo-Tech and graduated with a degree in Business Management. Ricky worked for Hild and Spring of Union Center and Sturgis Feed and Seed. He worked in Gillette, WY in the Oil Fields before the bust in the 80's. He returned to South Dakota where he worked at Merrilot and Perdue Manufacturing. In 1995, he moved to Orchard, TX, where he worked for Southern Rodeos as a Marketing Director. In 2000, he was instrumental in establishing the National Professional Bull Riders Association where he held the position of Business and Marketing Manager. Since 2006, in addition to the NPBR he was the Special Events Coordinator for the Resistol Hat Company.
Through his associations in the sports of Rodeo and Bull Riding, Ricky made many friends across the entire country, and was widely respected for his dedication and professionalism. After Ricky accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, he touched a lot of lives and led many to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Survivors include his five brothers, Gerald (Michaela) of New Underwood, Greg (Eileen) of Rapid City, Rodney (Jane) of Salina, KS, Roger (Marilu) of Sturgis, and Galen (Donna) of New Underwood; three sisters, Nancy (Grant) Simons of White Owl, Melody (Ross) Boydston of Gordon, NE, and Kim McMillan of Rapid City; fiancée, Donna Thibodeaux of Garland, TX; numerous nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
A memorial has been established.

Dawn Darlene Dachtler

April 20, 1963 - October 26, 2008

Service was held:

Friday October 31, 2008 at 2:30 p.m.

Dawn Darlene Dachtler, 45, Rapid City, died Sunday, October 26, 2008 at her residence in Rapid City.
Committal services will be 2:30 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2008 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Fr. Kerry Prendiville officiating. Friends may gather at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis prior to leaving for the cemetery.
Dawn was born April 20, 1963 at Chamberlain, SD, to Gary and Susan (Conner) Ames. She moved to Sturgis at the age of 13. After completing her education in Sturgis, she attended Western Dakota Vo-Tech where she earned her LPN degree. She was employed as a nurse in Rapid City and Sturgis.
Dawn was a caregiver and chose to be a stay at home Mom to care for her husband, grandfather and children. Dawn was a very caring person. She also enjoyed movies and her computer.
Survivors include her parents Gary and Susan Ames, Sturgis; husband Michael Lench, Sturgis; one son Adrian (Matt) O'Daniel, Seattle, WA; one daughter, Susan (Chris) Hein, Rapid City; one brother, Gary L. (Jana) Ames Jr., Winner, SD; one sister Roxann (Bill) Snyder, Sturgis; one grandson Kevin Hein, Rapid City.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Elvera A. Howell

December 29, 1917 - October 27, 2008

Service was held:

Friday, October 31, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

Elvera A. Howell, 90, Sturgis, died Monday, October 27, 2008 at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Rosary services beginning at 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 31, 2008 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Fr. Michel Mulloy officiating. Burial follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to the St. Francis of Assisi Altar Society.
Elvera was born December 29, 1917 at Opal, SD, to Mathias and Anna (Backes) Moelter. She grew up in Opal and attended country school. She worked in Minnesota for relatives for one year before returning and working for several families in the Faith area.
Elvera married Ernest Howell at Little Rock, AR, on October 8, 1943. They returned to Faith where they owned and operated the Home Café. After moving to Sturgis, Elvera worked in food service at Fort Mead VA Hospital. They moved to Arkansas and back to Faith in 1976.
Elvera moved to Sturgis after her husband's death.
She was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Survivors include her sister, Mathilda (Walter) Grueb, Faith; two nieces, Linda (Wayne) Lensegrav, Sturgis, Irma (Kevin) Fees, Hot Springs; nephews, Herbert (Marcia) Grueb, Black Hawk, Rodney (Tawana) Grueb, Onida, SD, Larry (Beth Ann) Grueb, Faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents Mathias and Anna, husband Ernest, two brothers, John and William; two sisters, Margaret and Gertrude.

Benno Frank Roller

January 3, 1934 - October 25, 2008

Service was held:

Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 2:00 p.m.

Benno Frank Roller, 74, Rapid City, died at his residence on Saturday, October 25, 2008.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont with a rosary and Christian prayer beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at the Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont with Fr. Mark McCormick officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Benno was born January 3, 1934, at New England, ND, to Leo and Emma (Jirges) Roller. He attended school at Sheffield, ND, near New England. After completing his education he joined the Air Force and served in Okinawa.
Benno married Regina Hushka at Dickinson, ND, on September 16, 1957.
Benno was honorably discharged from the Rushmore (Ellsworth) Air Force Base near Rapid City in 1959. The family moved back to North Dakota where Benno went to electrical and refrigeration school. He worked at the local Gambles store in New England before returning to Rapid City where he was employed by Larkin and Jones. The family moved to Brighton, CO, in 1967 where Benno was employed at the Brighton Appliance Store. In the early 70's, they moved back to Rapid City where Benno was again employed by Larkin and Jones and later the Twin City Fruit Company in Deadwood. They moved to Vail, CO, where he worked for Nordic Refrigeration for three years before moving back to Rapid City where he ultimately retired. Benno operated his own appliance service company for many years.
He enjoyed flying his own aircraft until giving up his license. He also enjoyed building and flying model planes.
Benno was a member of the Rapid City Prop Busters.
Survivors include his wife, Regina Roller, Rapid City; two sons, Curtis (Gail) Roller, Liberty, MO, and Zac (Cary) Roller, Rapid City; four daughters, Cheri (Todd) Ernst, Powell, WY, Suzie (Bruce) Blair, Piedmont, Shelly (Doyle) Schrader, Minot, ND, and Zina (Doug) Workman, Granite, CO; one brother, Wenzel Roller, New England, ND; sisters, Diane (Dennis) Schwehr, Thompson Falls, MT, Elsie Miller, Dickinson, ND, and Maggie Roller; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Hills.

Richard L. Eaton

March 15, 1982 - October 25, 2008

Service was held:

Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

Richard Levi Eaton, 26 of Piedmont, passed away on Saturday morning October 25, 2008 at Clarkson Mountain View Health Care facility in Rapid City, SD.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday October 29, 2008 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont with Pastor Mike Bang officiating. Burial follows at the Piedmont Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the Sturgis High School Rodeo Club.
Richard L. Eaton was born March 15, 1982 at Rapid City Regional Hospital to Levi and Laurie (Ginter) Eaton. He was raised in Piedmont and attended Piedmont Elementary, Sturgis Middle School and Sturgis Brown High School. Richard loved rodeo and started mutton busting at age 5 when he won his first buckle. From then on, rodeo was his passion and he participated in rodeo in 4-H, High School and College (Panhandle State University Goodwill, OK). Richard’s horse, Gray aka "Budd" was his rodeo companion from day one. Before high school, Richard played t-ball, soccer, baseball and participated on the Piedmont swim team.
In high school, Richard, loved to wrestle and in 4-H he showed cattle and even learned to take a few award winning photos. Richard graduated Sturgis Brown High School with the class of 2000. After attending Panhandle State Richard took a “direction seeking vacation” from school and moved to Lincoln, NE were he lived with friends and worked at Kawasaki. He then decided to venture back down south to attend Spartan School of Aeronautics in 2003-2004 then transferred to Tulsa Technology Center (TTC) to complete his training in airplane mechanics. Richard loved to have FUN with friends and family, barbeque, go to the lake and play poker. While in Oklahoma, Richard had many jobs but his favorite was parking cars for DoubleTree hotel in Tulsa where he called home often to brag about the fancy cars he got to park and the famous people he met. A couple times, he received $100 tips.
Richard has made many friends from South Dakota to Oklahoma. His friends were very important to him and you would know this by his cell phone bill. He was always the life of the party—even nominated for class clown and most unforgettable classmate. Richard will be remembered for his clam nature, his loving spirit and his sense of humor.
Five months short of graduating from TTC in July of 2006, Richard suffered an anoxic brain injury from Pneumonia and lived in a semi-conscious state until his death on October 25, 2008. Richard touched many of our lives and we will forever be grateful for having the opportunity to know and love him. Even in his semi-conscious state Richard could still draw a crowd.
Survivors include his parents, Levi and Laurie Eaton, Piedmont; two sisters, Kathy Albers, Spearfish, Stephanie Deuter, Dell Rapids; several aunts, uncles and numerous cousins.
Richard was preceded in death by his grandparents, Wesley Eaton, Carroll Ginter, Maxine Kelley, Lloyd Kelley; uncle, Richard Doyen; cousins, Riley Doyen and Tanya Gano.
