Bessie Britt Ward
1931-2002
ADAMSVILLE: Services for Bessie Britt Ward, 69, were at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 30 at Shackelford Adamsville Chapel in Adamsville. The body was cremated.
Mrs. Ward, a retired sewing machine operator for Harwood in Adamsville, died at Methodist Healthcare in Selmer on Sunday, October 27.
Survivors include a daughter, Dianne Ross of Adamsville; a son, Robert A. Forbess of McKenzie; a sister, Rachel Pickett of Huntingdon; two brothers, Leo Britt of Huntingdon and Robert Britt of Dickson; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Douglas Edward Ward preceded her in death.

Mildred D. Byrd
1921-2002
GLEASON - Services for Mildred D. Byrd, 80, were at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 1 at Gallimore Funeral Home, with Rev. Dale Mathis and Bro. John Wilson officiating. Burial was in New Valley cemetery.
Mrs. Byrd, a retired cafeteria worker for the Gleason School, died Wednesday, October 30 at Jackson-Madison General Hospital. She was a member of El Bethel Methodist Church.
She was born November 30, 1921 in Gleason to the late James Albert and Malicia Anna Lee Trevethan Marsh. Her husband, Carl Byrd also preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Clark of Gleason and two sons, Russell Byrd of McKenzie and Kenneth Byrd of Gleason; and one grandchild.

Lucille Cochran Smyth
1910-2002
GLEASON - Services for Lucille Cochran Smyth, 92, retired drug store owner, will be Wednesday, November 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gleason First Baptist Church, with Rev. Raymond Carneal officiating. Burial will be in Hopewell cemetery.
Mrs. Smith died on Monday, November 4 at her home. Her husband, Robert Vernon Smyth, preceded her in death.
She was born on January 24, 1910 in Greenfield to the late Charles Elmer and Eva Mary Mitchell Cochran. She was a member of the Gleason First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Bobbye Robison of Gleason; a son, Robert Smyth of Nashville and three grandchildren.
Gallimore Funeral Home will be charge of the arrangements.

Issac Richardson, Jr.
1924-2003
PALM SPRINGS: Issac Eugene Richardson, Jr., 78, died on February 10 at Palm Springs.
He was born February 12, 1924 to Issac Eugene and Beatrice Cage Richardson in Louisville, KY. He married Betty Johnson on August 22, 1948 in Huntingdon.
He was an engineer with General Motors for 26 years. He was a lifetime member of B.P.O. Elks and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He served in the United States Army from 1942-1946.
Survivors include his wife, Betty of Palm Springs; five sons, Issac E. III of Lake in the Hills, Illinois, Patrick of Grayslake, Illinois, Tom of Marina Del Rey, Joseph of Key West, Florida and John of Encinitas; his sister, Patricia Hackney of Hendersonville; two brothers, James W. and Harold, both of Hendersonville; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Private services were at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, July 20 in Huntingdon. The body was cremated. Inurnment was held privately at Clark cemetery in Huntingdon.
Dilday Funeral Home was in charge of the local arrangements.

Bertha Harris
1899-2003
HUNTINGDON - Mrs. Bertha Harris, 104, died on Friday, July 18 at her home. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, July 20 at 3:00 p.m. in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Wayne Holmes officiating. Interment icon followed in the Barr Springs cemetery.
Mrs. Harris, daughter of the late Roland and Elizabeth Reed Robinson, was born May 6, 1899 in Carroll County. She was the widow of Earnie Harris, who died in 1979, a homemaker and a member of the Davis Chapel Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Bobbie Jean Brandon and Cluster Scott, both of Huntingdon; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and three nieces.

Gayle Fields Richardson
1954-2003
BROWNSVILLE: Gayle Fields Richardson, 49, died Wednesday, July 16 after a 14-month battle with cancer. Services were held on Friday, July 18 at Brownsville Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Bob Connerley and Bro. Samuel Young officiating. Interment icon was in the Brownsville Memorial Gardens.
She was preceded in death by her father, James M. 'Booker' Fields, her sister, Mitzie Kaye Fields and a stepdaughter, Jenni Richardson.
Survivors include her husband, Lynn Richardson of Brownsville; three sons, Tim Hopper, Anthony 'Shag' Hopper and Jerry D. Hopper, all of Martin; one daughter, Tammy K. Sonnefeld of Martin; one stepson, Joseph Bradley Richardson of Brownsville; her mother, Eunice Fields of Gleason; four sisters, Doris J. Williams of Alco, Arkansas; Dorothy Sellers of Collierville; Patricia Hardwick and Marilyn Bell, both of Gleason; one brother, James 'Jim' Fields of McKenzie and three grandchildren, Shelby Smoot, Hanna Sonnefeld and Jackson Reed Hopper.

Rev. Frank Scott Cowan
1924-2003
MADISONVILLE, KENTUCKY: Services for Rev. Frank Scott Cowan, 78, were at 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 8 at Eastview Baptist Church in Madisonville with Rev. T.D. Stubblefield of the First Baptist Church in Chesterfield, Missouri and Rev. Norris Mills of Eastview Baptist Church officiating. Interment icon followed in the New Salem Baptist Church cemetery in Sturgis, Kentucky.
Rev. Cowan died on Wednesday, September 3 at the Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
He was born on November 11, 1924 in Buchanan to the late Tab Frank Cowan and Racheal Lightfoot Cowan. He attended Western Oak Grove Elementary School and Central High School in Paris and was pastor of New Salem Baptist Church in Sturgis, Kentucky for over 23 years. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Irene Dawson Cowan.
Survivors include three daughters, Helen Cowan of Louisville, Kentucky, Brenda Cowan of Lexington, Kentucky and Myrtle Cowan of Madisonville, Kentucky; three sons, Rev. Glen Cowan and Fred Cowan, both of Madisonville, Kentucky and Lynwood Cowan of Orlando, Florida; two sisters, Ernestine Travis and Onita Bunton, both of Springville and 10 grandchildren.
Trinity Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ludie Montgomery Gaines
1922-2006
McKENZIE - Ludie Montgomery Gaines, 84, died Wednesday, March 22, at Jackson-Madison General Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 26, at First United Methodist Church with Bro. Bill Mullins officiating. Entombment followed in Carroll Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Gaines, a homemaker, was born March 3, 1922, in Pinedale, Mississippi, to the late Jodie William and Pearl Morris Montgomery. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in McKenzie.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Ben Gaines Sr. She and her husband founded Gaines Manufacturing Company from their garage in Memphis and relocated to McKenzie in 1958. They were also involved in the development of a motel, bowling alley, golf course, trucking company, Wal-Mart shopping centers and a restaurant. They were instrumental in a campaign that brought Bob Hope to Bethel College in 1975, raising more than $100,000 for the college. The school's six-lane, indoor heated pool was named "The Ben and Ludie Gaines Pool" in appreciation of the family's generous contributions. Many scholarships have been made available by the Gaines family for students attending Bethel College. The college in May 1997 honored both Ben and Ludie with honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Dr. Robert) Kriebel of Franklin and Jodie (Jeff) Johnson of McKenzie; one son, Ben Gaines Jr. of Jackson; seven grandchildren: Scott Kriebel, Jennifer Johnson, Jessica Johnson, Jake Johnson, John Johnson, Ben Gaines III, and Bailey Gaines; and special nieces Sandra Frayser, Rita Nanney, Janet Whitehead and Wyvone Runyon.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Bethel College or First United Methodist Church.
McKenzie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jeffrey Lynn Dodd
1959-2006
McKENZIE - Jeffrey Lynn Dodd, 46, died Sunday, March 26, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 28, in the chapel of Chase Funeral Home. Interment icon followed in Carroll Memorial Gardens. Bro. Bob White officiated the service.
Mr. Dodd was born August 28, 1959, to the late Troy Witsel and Julia Matilda (Smith) Dodd. He was a Baptist by faith and a construction worker.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Joyce Smith, and one brother, Jackie Dodd.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Mary Dodd; two daughters, Amy Burnine and Jaclyn Dodd, both of McKenzie; two sons, Michael (Angela) Dodd of McKenzie and Stephen (Shonda) Burnine of Gleason; one granddaughter, Caitlin Dodd; four brothers: Jerry (Mary) Dodd of Cedar Grove, Joe (Janice) Dodd and Jimmy Dodd, both of Huntingdon, and Jon (Cheryl) Dodd of Benton, Kentucky.

Margie Mae Dring
1933-2006
McKENZIE - Margie Mae Dring, 72, died Friday, March 24, at her residence. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 25, at McKenzie Funeral Home. Bro. Harrell Nation officiated the service. Interment icon followed at Oakwood cemetery in Milan.
Mrs. Dring, a receptionist, was born December 4, 1933, in Huntingdon, to the late Halford and Jesse Arnold Lowe. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in McKenzie.
Survivors include one son, Terry Glenn Warren of McKenzie, and three grandchildren.

Maurice J. "Marty" Grooms
1968-2006
HOLLOW ROCK - Maurice J. "Marty" Grooms, 37, died Saturday, March 25, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 27, in the chapel of Chase Funeral Home. Interment icon followed in New Prospect cemetery in Hollow Rock. Bro. Bruce Hollingsworth officiated the service.
Mr. Grooms, a truck driver for Turner Dairy, was born October 10, 1968, in Camden, to the late Clifford Maurice Grooms and Nancy Grooms of Bruceton, who survives. He was a member of Thompson's General Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Riggs.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Susan Grooms; two daughters, Amber Nicole Grooms and Katlyn Danielle Grooms, both of Hollow Rock; two sisters, Mary (Donald) Mitchell of Buena Vista and Sherry Tanaka of McKenzie; five brothers: James Hershel Riggs, Billy Riggs, David (Nancy) Riggs, and Richard Grooms, all of Bruceton, and Robert (Kim) Riggs of Jackson.

Ernestine Leach
1923-2006
HENRY - Ernestine Leach, 82, died Wednesday, March 22, at Henry County Medical Center in Paris. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 26, at Walton Grove Presbyterian Church in Henry. Pastor Darrell Albea was the eulogist. Interment icon followed in St. Paul cemetery in Huntingdon. Trinity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Leach was born May 5, 1923, in Huntingdon, to Ervin and Nannie Abbage, both deceased. She was educated in Carroll County schools.
She was married to Otha Leach Sr., who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Cozart; and two brothers, Edward Abbage and E.L. Abbage.
She is survived by a son, Otha (Alfredia) Leach of Henry; three daughters, Nannie Leach and Cubay Leach of Henry and Debra Leach of McKenzie; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
