Charles Martin
CLEVELAND - Charles Michael 'Mike' Martin died Monday, April 26, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 52.

He was an employee of Hardwick Stove and Maytag Corp. for 28 years, a member of Prospect Cumberland Presbyterian Church and attended New Hope Primitive Baptist Church.

Mr. Martin was a member of the Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge and the Alhambra Temple. He was an active member in the Provost Unit.

He was the originator and chairman of the Alhambra Gun and Knife Show and a reserve sergeant for the Bradley County Sheriff's Office, where he was a member of the Old West Posse.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Millard Martin, and his stepfather, Robert Ragsdale.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Francisco Martin; a daughter, Kendra Owens, Cleveland; his mother, Deatrice Day Ragsdale, Cleveland; and three granddaughters.

A Masonic service will be today at 1 p.m. at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home, followed by the funeral at 2 p.m. with elder Richard Martin and the Rev. Kevin Colvard officiating.

Burial will be in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the FOP Lodge 59 Annual Christmas Basket Fund or the American Heart Association.

J.T. Meeks
PALMER - J.T. Meeks, owner of Meeks Auto Sales, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in a Chattanooga hospital. He was 69.

A graveside service will be today at 11 a.m. at Layne Funeral Home in Palmer, with the Rev. Sam Long officiating.

Burial will be in Fall Creek cemetery.

Howard Nunley
WHITWELL - Howard Nunley died Monday, April 26, 1999, in an area hospital. He was 61.

Mr. Nunley was retired from Lodge Manufacturing in South Pittsburg, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Monroe and Mae Keith Nunley, and six brothers, Jim, Roy, Claude, Frank, Hoyt and Tommy Nunley.

Survivors include three sisters, Pearl Gravitt, Trenton, Pa., Gladys Terry and Dorothy Curvin, both of Whitwell.

Services will be today at 3 p.m. at Whitwell Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Chance officiating.

Burial will be in Red Hill cemetery in Whitwell.

Hubert Pruitt
SEQUATCHIE - Hubert W. Pruitt died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 80.

Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Sequatchie Valley Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. George Warr and the Rev. John Gamble officiating.

Burial will be in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens.

Juanita Sheldon
ATHENS - Juanita Grace Hester Sheldon died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 78.

She was the daughter of the late Warren and Mae Bennett Hester and was a Baptist.

Survivors include a daughter, Sue Plank, Athens; a son, Ernest Sheldon, Oldfort, Tenn.; two sisters, Bessie Park, Tampa, Fla., and Betty Jo Stone, Benton; three brothers, Ralph and Richard Hester, both of Athens, and Henry Hester, Cleveland; six grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Benton cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Earl Vestal
ETOWAH - Earl Vestal died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in an area hospital. He was 88.

Mr. Vestal was a former resident of Athens and Sweetwater, Tenn., a member of Goodsprings Baptist Church and the husband of the late Bertha Lindner Vestal.

He served as a wholesale grocery salesman for many years with Vestal Grocery, the OK Jones Co. and H.T. Hackney Co. until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Nell Whiteside Vestal, Etowah; a son, Jim Vestal, Loudon, Tenn.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be today at 8 p.m. at Jerry Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Arnold King and lay leader J. Neal Ensminger officiating.

Burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in McMinn Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Iowa Womac
ATHENS - Iowa T. Bledsoe Womac died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in an area hospital. She was 74.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronnie Torbett and the Rev. Kenneth Charles officiating.

Burial will be in McMinn Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be held today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ruth Addington
JASPER - Ruth Newton Addington died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at her home. She was 74.

A graveside service will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens with the Rev. David Grisham officiating.

Arrangements are by Sequatchie Valley Memorial Funeral Home, Jasper.

Mattie Austin
McMINNVILLE - Mattie M. Austin died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in a nursing home in Shelbyville, Tenn. She was 78.

She had been a hairdresser and attended the Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. Austin, and a daughter, Margie Ann Austin.

Survivors include a son, James E. Austin, McMinnville; two daughters, Brenda J. and Richard Bost, McMinnville, and Linda Young, Athens, Tenn.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be today at 10:30 a.m. in Mountain View cemetery with Richard Bost officiating.

Arrangements are by Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home, McMinnville.

Amanda Baker
SPENCER - Amanda Inez Hillis Baker died Monday, April 26, 1999. She was 83.

She was a retired factory worker and a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband, A.P. Baker; two sons, Charles Baker, Spencer, and Bob Baker, Pikeville, Tenn.; a sister, Pauline Baker, Virginia Beach, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home with Lofton Graves officiating.

Burial will be in Town cemetery.

Visitation will be today until 10 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. until the time of service.

Cecil Cordell
CLEVELAND - The Rev. Cecil Wayne Cordell died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in an area hospital. He was 62.

Services will be held today at 1 p.m. at W.L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home with Timothy Davis and Dean Tapp officiating.

Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Bertha Dykes
CLARKSVILLE - Bertha Mae Dykes died Sunday, April 25, 1999. She was 86.

She was formerly of Chattanooga and was a beautician for 23 years.

Survivors include a son, Johnny F. Dykes, Cincinnati; a daughter, Billie Jean Whitmore, Clarksville, Tenn.; sister, Mary Lou Rossat, Lutherville, Ga.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be today at 3 p.m. at Foston Memorial Chapel in Clarksville, Tenn.

Nellie Evans ATHENS - Nellie Evans died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 77.

Arrangements will be announced by M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home in Athens.

Melvin Haskins
CLEVELAND - Melvin A. Haskins died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 70.

Services will be today at 11 a.m. at Grissom Funeral Home with Dr. Dan Haskins and the Rev. Carlos Sibley officiating.

Burial will be in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 81, Cleveland, TN 37364-0081, or the Macedonia Baptist Church Building Fund, 3119 Springplace Road S.E., Cleveland, TN 37323.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Benny Holden
DAYTON - Benny Royce Holden died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in Rhea Medical Center. He was 63.

He was retired from TVA, was a member of Grace Baptist Church of Decatur, Tenn., and was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Swafford Holden, and his parents, James W. and Viola Lou Holland Holden.

Survivors include two sisters, Margaret Raper and Elizabeth Layne, both of Dayton; and two brothers, Carl E. Holden, Laurel, Md., and Jessie Holden, Gallatin, Tenn.

Services will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Rhea Memory Gardens with the Rev. Ronnie Torbett officiating.

Visitation will be today after 5 p.m. at Vanderwall Funeral Home, Dayton.

Wendell Lewis
TEN MILE - Wendell 'Bear' Lewis died Saturday, April 24, 1999. He was 58.

Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Ziegler Funeral Home in Athens with the Rev. Kenneth Goins officiating.

Burial will be in McMinn Memory Gardens.

J.T. Meeks
PALMER - J.T. Meeks, owner of Meeks Auto Sales, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in a Chattanooga hospital. He was 69.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda J. Hampton Meeks; a son, Brett Meeks, Palmer; and two grandsons.

A graveside service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Layne Funeral Home in Palmer, with the Rev. Sam Long officiating..

Burial will be in Fall Creek cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 10 p.m. at the funeral home.
