Wilma Gass Smith
Wilma Gass Smith, age 70, of Jefferson City, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2003, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City. She was a retired co-coordinator of the Mothers Day Out Program. She was a graduate of Jefferson City High School and attended Carson Newman College. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Charles (Bud) Smith of Jefferson City; daughter, Dawn Hedrick of Clinton; son, Charles Smith II of New Market; three grandsons; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; sister, Helen Burton of Jefferson City; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, August 4, at 8 p.m. at Fielden Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Dampier and Dr. Gene Wilder conducting the service. Entombment services will be held Wednesday, August 5, at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 4, from 6-8-p.m. prior to memorial services at the funeral home. Fielden Funeral Home, New Market, is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Juanita Ward
Margaret Juanita Ward, age 62, of White Pine, passed away Sunday, August 3, 2003, at St. Mary's Residence Hospice following an extended illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced at a later date. Farrar Funeral Home, Dandridge, is in charge of arrangements.

Linda Cate
Linda Cate, age 53, of Strawberry Plains, passed away Monday, August 4, 2003, after a short illness. She was a dedicated nurse and a member of Holston Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Fred L. Cate; son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Julian Dillivan; step-daughters, Wendy Hayes and husband, Tim, Suzanne Branch and husband, Roger; step-grandchildren, Spencer and Logan Hayes and Drew Branch; sister, Alice Cruze and dear friend, Gladys Roach. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 6, at Holston Baptist Church in Strawberry Plains with Rev. Larry Young and Rev. Hubert Bunch conducting the service. Interment icon will be held Thursday, August 7, at 11 a.m. in Beech Springs cemetery. Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville, is in charge of arrangements.

Frances Manning Denton
Frances Manning Denton, age 89, of New Market (Piedmont Community), passed away Monday, August 4, 2003, at Jefferson County Nursing Home. She was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Issac and Addie Burchfield Manning; husband, Glenn T. Denton; sisters, Aileen Shell, Mabel Reese; brother, Glenn Manning. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Denton Leonard; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 5, at Farrar Dandridge Chapel with Rev. Jim Smith and Rev. Vaughn Woody conducting the service. Interment icon graveside services will be held Thursday, August 7, at 11 a.m. in Hills Union cemetery. Farrar Funeral Home, Dandridge, is in charge of arrangements.

Jayne A. (Horton) Pruitt
Jayne A. (Horton) Pruitt, age 57, passed away Sunday, August 3, 2003, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Maryland after a long illness. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Monica and Mark Greene of Morristown; sons, John and Rick Horton of Maryland; grandchildren, Justin, Ashleigh and Jordan Pierce of Morristown and Taylor Horton of Maryland. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 9, in Maryland. Friends and family may call the home of Mark and Monica Greene. Cremation Society of Maryland, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Juanita Ward
Margaret Juanita Ward, age 62, of White Pine, passed away Sunday, August 3, 2003 at St. Mary's Residence Hospice following an extended illness. She was a member of Mt. Vale Church of God in Talbott. Margaret worked for many years as a waitress in food service in and around the Lakeway area. She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Ward; parents, Walter and Velma (Kitts) Kear. She is survived by her son, Michael Ward of Centerville; brothers, Carl and Ann Kear of Memphis, J.C. and Pat Kear, Bud and Beverly Kear of Cincinnati, Ohio, Gene and Rita Kear and Bobby Kear of Knoxville; sisters, Barbara and Bobby Powell of Knoxville and Faye and Bill Fannin of Smynra; several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law; mother-in-law, Emma Ward; special friends, T.H. Ferrell, Ruth Walker, Kendra Morgan, Kathy Mitchell, and Terri Hill and the church family. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 6, at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tony Collins and Rev. T.H. Ferrell conducting the service. Interment icon followed in White Pine cemetery. Farrar Funeral Home, White Pine, was in charge of arrangements.

Freddie Mae Debose
Freddie Mae Debose, of Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2003, at the Life Care Center of Jefferson City. She was born November 11, 1910 in Hope Hull, Alabama. Freddie was one of eighteen children. She was a member of Martha Davis Baptist Church. Before making her home in Jefferson City, she retire from Harlan County Hospital after many years of service in Harlan, Kentucky. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ulyss Debose; parents, Anthony Lee Russell and Lula (Brandy) Russell, all brothers and sisters, except one; niece she raised, Donzie (Russell) Greene. She is survived by her children she raised, Robert (Mary Ann) Greene of Talbott, Huge (Cynthia) Greene of Portsmouth, Ohio, Mary Elizabeth Sanford of Portsmouth, Ohio, Myra (Thomas) Dunson of Harlan, Kentucky and Ernest (Geneva) Cole; sister, Shirley (Glenn) Harbin of Harlan, Kentucky; devoted cousin, Elder Willie Lamb; several sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 22, at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Nathaniel Wilson conducting the service. Interment icon followed in Jefferson Memorial Gardens. Farrar Funeral Home, Jefferson City, was in charge of arrangements.

David A. (Ducko) Denton
David A. (Ducko) Denton, age 45, of Jefferson City, passed away Saturday, November 22, 2003, at the University of Tennessee Hospital following a sudden illness. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #61. He served at the rank of Corporal with the Jefferson City Police Department with 22 years of service. He was very active in the Jefferson City Youth Baseball League and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is preceded in death by his father, Jim Denton; twin brother, Danny Alan Denton; sister, Dedra Dawn Denton; brother, Jimmy Darrell Denton. He is survived by his wife, Florence Denton of the home; son, Alan Denton; daughter, Tiffany Denton; mother, Joelene Denton of Jefferson City; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Don Stubblefield of Jefferson City; nephews, Bruce and Phillip Stubblefield; several aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives; long-time family friend almost as close as brothers, Wayne Hinkle and wife, Jeannie; special friend, Charlie Miller of Jefferson City. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 26, at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Dr. Sonny Strange, Rev. Rusty Webster and Rev. John Lawson conducting the service. Interment icon will follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens with full police honors. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, November 25, at Emmanuel Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Baptist Church Youth Program or Mills Springs Church Youth Program. Farrar Funeral Home, Jefferson City, is in charge of arrangements.

Betty J. Hardin
Betty J. Hardin, age 76, of Strawberry Plains, passed away Sunday, November 23, 2003 after a lingering illness. She was a member of Strawberry Plains First Baptist Church and a retired employee of Magnavox. She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lynn Griffin; sister, Mildred Griffin, Edith Griffin, Clara Stair, Ruth Newman, Louise Cate, Helen Hayter; brother, Robert Griffin. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Troy E. Hardin of the home; son, Robert Hardin, also of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Diane Hardin of Morristown; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Jim Haggard of Morristown; grandchildren, Gary Hardin III of Columbia, South Carolina, Betsy Wolfe of Morristown and Mandy Haggard of Morristown; great-grandchildren, Joel, Jacob, and Gabrielle Hardin of Columbia, South Carolina and Kirk Wolfe of Morristown; sister, Mrs. W.M. (Rubye) Sams of Morristown; sister-in-law, Ruby Griffin of Strawberry Plains; brother-in-law, Jack Hayter of Morristown; several nieces, nephews and special friends. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 25, at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Boatfield conducting the service. Family and friends will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 26, at the funeral home to proceed to Trentville cemetery for an 10:30 a.m. graveside interment icon service. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday prior to the services at the funeral home. Farrar Funeral Home, Jefferson City, are in charge of arrangements.

Nancy L. Peck
Nancy L. Peck, age 97, of Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2003 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. She was a homemaker and had been a member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City since 1924, the year she came as a student to Carson-Newman College form her home in Greene County. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry G. Peck; parents, Cartherine J. Livingstone and Nathaniel T. Livingstone; four brothers and six sister. She is survived by her daughter, Mary J. Peoples, with whom she had made her home for the past fourteen years in Jefferson City; son, James H. Peck and wife, Linnea of Knoxville; daughter, Bette H. Brasher and husband, Jack of Farragut; daughter, Amy L. Torgerson and husband, Ray of Portland, Oregon; son, Edwin A. Peck and wife, Joan of Knoxville; grandchildren, Amy Huber, Angela Link, Henry “Hank” Peck, Julie Peck, Caroline Peck, Gilbert “Bo” Peck of Knoxville, John Peck of Greeneville, Bill Huber of Nashville, Jeanie Barrineau of Greenwood, South Carolina and Lydia Elliott of Powhatan, Virginia; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Dorothy Livingstone of Cleveland. Funeral services were held Sunday, November 23, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Gene Wilder conducting the service. Graveside interment icon services were held in Westview cemetery. Farrar Funeral Home, Jefferson City, was in charge of arrangements.

Zella Mae Atchley
Zella Mae Atchley, of Morristown, formerly of Knoxville, passed away Friday, November 21, 2003, at Life Care Center of Morristown. She was a member of The First Christian Church of Knoxville for 75 years. She is preceded in death by her husband, William J. Atchley. She is survived by her daughter and husband, Nancy and Willliam H. Bassett; granddaughter, Julie Bassett of Morristown; grandson, Eric Bassett of Akron, Ohio; sister, Mary Akers of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews. Graveside interment icon services were held Tuesday, November 25, in Lynnhurst cemetery with Dr. Scott Rollins conducting the service. Fielden Funeral Home, New Market, was in charge of arrangements.
